My first time trying the flying fish and it was pretty good. We ordered a bunch different foods to share like their sushi, pasta and sushi tacos. My favourite was the sushi tacos and would definitely reccomend it. The pasta was okay. The sushi was nice and fresh with a clean taste. Service was good, our waiter was very nice and attentive. The food did not take too long to come out. The restaurant is a little small but well decorated with lots of pictures. Overall, nice little spot. read more

*3.5 stars* Really like the idea of a japanese fusion restaurant. This place has a good variety of dishes from Japanese style pastas to sushi tacos. The service was good and pretty fast. The restaurant was cute inside but it is a small space with limited tables. We got set D (shared between two) which came with any choice of pasta, special roll, and 2 sushi tacos. We tried the shichimi rosé cream pasta which was a 7/10. It had good flavour and had a bit of a smoky taste to it which was good but I wasn't super amazed. For the special roll we tried unknown dragon and I'd give it an 8/10. It was a good quality roll and the pieces were quite large. For the sushi tacos we got the salmon tartare and the spicy seared sashimi. The salmon one was okay but not my favourite so I'd give it a 7/10. I did really enjoy the spice seared sashimi taco. It had a torched sushi flavour and good amount of spice, 8/10. We also got the 12 piece omakase sushi box. Had a nice variety of pieces and they were nice and fresh. This was an 8/10. Finally got a chance to stop by this Japanese restaurant for a Sunday lunch. The restaurant wasn't too busy as I arrived right when they opened at noon. The food here is solid. They have several options for a set lunch combo with good portions. I got lunch set for 2 which includes: - Wafu pasta with garlic miso aioli and bacon - Hamburger steak combo which includes fries , veggies, and a fried egg - Two Nori tacos (veggie taco + salmon taco) The nori taco was a highlight - it's basically an open maki with crispy seaweed as wrapping. Could be improved with some soy sauce on the side though. What I find a little odd about this restaurant was that although they serve Japanese pasta as well as sushi, they don't give Japanese tea nor do they have coffee. So the experience feels like it's missing a piece that ties the meal together. But if you're a fan of Japanese style western food, the flying fish is definitely a place to try. Where do I even begin? This place is a gold mine!!!! A pure hidden gem in Richmond Hill. The restaurant inside is pretty small so we were lucky we got a table. They don't take reservations on weekends so you'll need to time it right. There is only one waitress for approx 6/7 tables so there is a bit of a time wait but she was great!!! Food: We got a set that had the following: - Miso soup: 5/5 stars. Hard to mess up. Great for a cold day. - Wafu Rose Bacon Pasta: 5/5 stars. It is an Italian fusion pasta which was so yummy! Has a bit of a kick to it spice wise and we got a large so it was huge. Def could take home for leftovers. You could for sure taste the fusion of both cultures. Must try. - Japanese Hamburger Steak: 4.2/5 stars. This was delicious! It came with fries, some veggies, rice, and homemade sauce. It was a bit on the dry side but with the sauce it was just right. The sauce was slightly too cinnamony taste for me but the brussel sprouts were to die for! - Salmon sushi taco: 4.5/5 stars. These were delicious!! There's some salmon, and crab. We ordered the Hamburger Steak w/ Mornay cheese sauce, Napolitan Pasta, Set Menu for 2: Sushi Box A (14pcs) & Torched Pressed Sushi (4pcs), and the Sushi Nori Taco. Absolutely delicious, good presentations, nicely done! Among all the great items, the Sushi Box and the Nori Taco stood out pretty well. The unique texture of Nori Taco was just fabulous. First time trying The Flying Fish. This is a hidden gem located in Richmond Hill (Chalmers Gate area). Reservations are highly recommended since there are only about 10 tables in this place. We ordered Combo for Two - Set B for $54. It was perfect ... sushi is so fresh and we enjoyed the assortment which included 14 pcs of Sushi and 4 pcs of Torched Sushi. We also picked this combo out because we wanted the Sushi Tacos which are a MUST! We love the Crunchy Nori Seaweed Shell and for our choices we choose Grilled Unagi (eel) and Spicy Salmon. They now have new menu, we checked out SET B which included: 14 pieces of sushi (2 of sushi box A) Torched Pressed Sushi 4pcs (Yuzu Salmon 2pcs+Lime Shrimp 2pcs) 2x Sushi Nori Taco (we chose bbq unagi +$2 and fresh salmon) It was a very delightful meal and we enjoyed everything so much! Amazing Japanese fusion restaurant. Ordered the Set Menu D for 2 with the Garlic Miso Aioli pasta, the Unknown Dragon roll and the Fresh Salmon and Seared Spicy Sashimi Nori tacos. In addition we got the chicken karaage with Korean sweet chili and the tempura shrimp. The sauce on the Karaage was too sweet in my opinion, I prefer a more milder sauce that isnt too overpowering. Chicken had a nice crisp with some juiciness to it. The pasta was good although not sure if the arugula was needed. They unfortunately didn't have the tofu so we went with the bacon which we found to be lacking in the dish. We ordered Set C which came with a pasta (shichimi rose cream with bacon) special roll (Golden Tiger) and 2 nori tacos (fresh salmon and beef bulgogi) and included a order of takoyaki. Tacos were amazing. Beef in the bulgogi was really flavourful. Restaurant is not that big so it fills up quickly. There is a sign on the table that says seating limit is 2 hours and if it's busy (ie lineup out the door) it's only a hour. The sign also said No Cake...which I'm assuming customers should not bring a cake to the restaurant for a celebratory meal and expect them to provide plates, forks and knives to serve the cake. I used to like this place. But I just visited again and it was disappointing. The portion is insanely small. The pasta dish can't even feed a kid. Mind you, it is a $19 pasta. Dined in here a few times and ordered take out many times! The restaurant is a small, cozy one and it is nicely decorated inside. Staff are friendly and service is good. In terms of food, the Napolitan Pasta and Seared Spicy Sashimi Nori Taco are my favourite! I've also tried the Wasabi Crème Fraîche before and it's quite good too! The Seared Spicy Sashimi Nori Taco is so good that I'd sometimes just order one to take out as a snack! My husband tried the Hamburger Steak once and was surprised at how delicious it was that he actually ordered it again the next time we returned. Ah disappointed to not be able to give this place more stars. It's a solid spot with creative Japanese and Japanese fusion options but the food and flavors were just lacking a bit. It's a small restaurant so they don't have the capacity to have guest and most tables are reserved already. We ordered the omakase box 20 piece and rose pasta. Both were ok but definitely not worth the price point of $5x and $22.50 respectively on the dishes. We definitely weren't full but also did not want to fork out another $22 on a pasta dish or 18 for 6 sushi pieces. Overall it's a one time restaurant for me and I will prob not be going back to justify the price. There are many other restaurants nearby who have better prices and tastier sushi. read more

What a great fusion restaurant! We ordered the lemon cream shrimp tempura, wasabi crème fraiche seafood pasta, spicy salmon taco, and the volcanic roll. All of the dishes were delicious, but our favourite was the pasta, as it was a unique fusion between Western and Japanese tastes. We also enjoyed the taco, but unfortunately we found it a bit pricey ($8.50) for one taco - one star off for this. However, the service is extremely attentive and the staff were all very kind. The decor of the restaurant is cozy and warm, with twinkle lights and greenery. We would come back, but maybe we would try another item instead of the taco. read more

Japanese? Fusion-ha! My girlfriend and I went to The Flying Fish on a late Saturday evening - luckily, there were plenty of open seats and we didn't have to wait. I will preface though, you may need to make reservations for lunch/early dinner since seating is limited in this small restaurant. Before devouring the Sushi Box C together, we each ordered a Sushi Nori Taco. The Seared Spicy Sashimi Taco had the perfect ratio of spice and cream. I'm not always the biggest fan of spicy tuna/salmon since the sauce tends to overpower the flavour of raw fish, but this seared version was well balanced and enjoyable. The Ahi Tuna Taco, in contrast, was light and fragrant. The pico de gallo really helped lift up the dense chunks of tuna so you never feel bogged down. We appreciated the fried seaweed taco shell to hold everything in place. Mind you, if you order the tacos, be prepared to either make a mess or look messy while eating! The Sushi Box C was definitely a thing of beauty. It comes in an assortment of sushi and is paired with a light, floral sashimi shoyu. We loved the shoyu as it didn't overpower the fresh fish. Our favourites, as always, were the sweet botan ebi nigiri and the creamy hotate nigiri. We opted not to disturb the sweetness of both seafood and enjoyed the nigiri without dipping in the shoyu. If you're a fan of tasting natural flavours, definitely try these nigiri by themselves. Unfortunately, I personally found the rice overall to be slightly overcooked but that might be personal preference since my girlfriend didn't have the same thoughts. While the Wafu Pasta options sounded delicious, we weren't that hungry tonight. We'll definitely aim to try the Wafu Pasta next time, especially that Wasabi Cream Carbonara. Mmmmm. read more

It's more of a 3.5*, but I bumped it to 4 since they offer great pasta for a sushi place. I was pleasantly surprised as I originally found this place on Yelp, and didn't have high expectations going in. This place is known for their sushi tacos. Personally, I enjoyed their other non-sushi items more. The appetizers are on the small side, and quite pricy for what it is. I ordered the Spicy seafood spaghetti, and it tasted so rich and creamy! I've been here twice and had a pleasant experience both times. The servers are very nice and the menu is extensive. I've tried a couple of their pastas and I like the Sukiyaki Pasta the best - I found the Wasabi Carbonara weirdly sour, but others liked it. I've also tried some of their rolls and sushi tacos. I feel like their fish isn't the most fresh fish I've had in Toronto, but the presentation is always beautiful and the taste is also good. The Bulgogi taco made one of my guests have stomach issues the next day for a while, but it may just be because it's quite oily, so approach those tacos with caution. Overall, I really like the concept and the dishes in this restaurant, but some can be a hit or miss. I feel that they are continuing to improve though, so I will give them 4 stars! read more

Location/Service This place is located in Golden Court Plaza, which is on Highway 7, a little west of Chalmers Rd - it's in the same area with Hot Taste Restaurant. I went here for takeout - so didn't take a look too carefully on interior. But the staff were pretty nice and order was done on time. Food I tried the Beef Sukiyaki Wafu Pasta - which has beef slices with napa cabbage, mushrooms, egg yolk and sukiyaki sauce. At the time I ordered this, they also added in a miso soup and a small sushi roll. Overall, I though the pasta was okay. The sukiyaki sauce was very plentiful - but a little too much to the dish. Portion size I felt was a little underwhelming, which made it weird with too much of the sukiyaki sauce. The beef was done right and it blends well with the egg yolk. The soup and sushi was good - but nothing too outstanding from my perspective. The meal was comforting overall, and it's something different in the area as there aren't a lot of Japanese style pastas. As this was around $16 - I felt a little underwhelming and not too exactly sure if I'm interested in trying other dishes to justify. read more

Got takeout from this new Richmond Hill spot, which I've seen floating around on socials and also seeing a new storefront as I drive by. Ordered a few wafu pasta dishes: the Napolitan, Beef Sukiyaki, and Wasabi cream carbonara, which all come with garlic bread. The beef sukiyaki was nice and light, with an egg and cabbage amongst its toppings. My favourite was the carbonara, which had a wasabi and spicy mentaiko kick. I had it reheated the next day and it still was very good. Will be back to try their other dishes (e.g. nori tacos) and also for their lunch specials! The flying fish is a really cute establishment in the Plaza. Parking wise, because of the sheer number of restaurants in the area, may be very difficult to find at least on the surface floor. There is underground parking available a few steps away from the restaurant - the spots are tight and it's free, so be careful when driving down to the parking. Seating - very quick. They told our table of 4 that we had to leave by 8 (it was about 7pm on a Monday night) because the table was reserved. They were super nice and told us to keep the table as long as we need half an hour into the dinner. The menu can be accessed by the QR code. Covid protocols are on point. There's quite a bit of variety on their menu. We ordered the: unagi fried nori taco 5/10. The unagi slices were great. The nori taco was fried very well. But in terms of flavour, it was mediocre. They look good aesthetically, but in all honesty, there was nothing really special about it. This was a miss for me. yuzu salmon oshizushi 10/10. The salmon was soft. The nice toasty flavour of the seared salmon. The yuzu flavour is light, but it balances the entire mouthful out. This was absolutely delicious and a must get. unagi & hotate kushi 100/10 is that even possible? Crispy rice base, Toasted bbq eel, sweet scallop sashimi on top. I could eat plates of these. It's 100% worth every mouthful. pork katsu roll 5/10. It looked good. The idea was great. The katsu was flavourless. The whole roll was kind of a downer. The size of the roll was fantastic, but I wish there was more flavour to it. sushi box C (20 pcs) 10/10. The fish was very very fresh. The rice was soft and balanced. Absolutely delicious. This might look like a lot of food, but it filled the 4 of us pretty good. I was quite comfortable after the meal. The service was great. The servers are so nice. We got some yakult at the end of the night to complete our meal and that made my night. This is definitely a place where you come to eat the fish. The innovation is there. First time adding a business onto Yelp woohoo! Stopped by for some takeout after a grocery run. This place probably opened a month or two ago and I pass by it quite often since it's super close to me. Definitely a change of pace as this place serves 'Japanese pasta & sushi' together. They have a decent selection of pastas (6 per the menu) that all have very unique and distinct Japanese influences into them. They also have a healthy selection of sushi with all your typical rolls, torch pressed sushi, fry sushi along with some signature rolls. The menu and overall selection here is massive to say the least. I ordered the Napolitan Pasta for $14.50 that had polish pork sausage, paprika, arugula and cherry tomatoes topped with 'TFF brown sauce' (not entirely sure what it stands for tho). The pasta comes in a rather large circular box and has plenty of toppings. I was worried that it might be one of those lots of noodles, not a lot of other stuff situations but happy to report otherwise. The sauce is sweet, rich and thick. Very tasty and unlike any other pasta I've had in the past. The sausages are well cooked and the veggies make it a complete package taste-wise. I got takeout and was hoping for a bit more portion-wise but the taste was great and overall presentation was awesome. Each pasta dish also comes with 2 slices of garlic buttered toast which was also really really good. Great stuff overall, will definitely return in person to try their other pasta and sushi offerings! Pros - tasty - generous portion - good quality fish, definitely fresh - friendly staff - restaurant looked clean and inviting - good portion of sauce, wasabi, ginger given - good price: $15 before tax on the app Areas of improvement - the rice is very sweet and tangy: this is not necessarily a bad thing as it's based on personal preference but it caught me by surprise. I'd prefer it toned down a bit. - variety of fish/sashimi/toppings: my chirashi bowl had salmon, snapper, tamago spring mix, pickled veggies ( including pickles which I didn't enjoy), cucumbers and tomatoes. I wish there was more variety of fish given and some more traditional toppings. Some tobiko and nori would have gone a long way. - presentation: fish was diced into small pieces. In my opinion, I think serving it as bigger cuts would have elevated the presentation. The diced pieces reminded me more of a poke bowl. Overall really impressive! I noticed that they specialize in Japanese style pasta and have lots of interesting rolls that look delicious. But the server kindly checked with the chefs and said that's okay, last call is at 8:30 they close at 9 really. That was very sweet of them so we tried to hurry and eat after reconfirming. I was a bit sad that they took away the sashimi set as it was pretty good last time. Also sad that there's still no sake to go with my sushi but still very good. Their fish is fresh and their presentation is still beautiful. They now have real dishware! As I pointed it out last time, definitely a more beautiful presentation and a real dine in experience. They did forget my ikura sushi order but I saw that they're already closing and all cleaned up so I said don't worry about it but the chef still personally came to apologize and brought out my order after. Pretty full place on the weekend, but that's probably because they don't open until noon. Within 15mins of opening, there were already 4 tables seated. There aren't that many tables at the place since it's pretty, so make sure you come early. Service was pretty good though, they come by to refill water often and since it's busy, it's pretty easy to flag someone if you need anything. Tacos were pretty unique, would come back for these. The ahi tuna reminded me of salsa probably because of the tomato & onion in the mix. The kushi was okay - good to try but not something I'd order again. They don't take reservations on weekends so we arrived at 4:45 and were able to pick any table :) Service and food were great. Price was reasonable. Would return. Nice ambiance. We lived in Japan and really enjoyed Japanese-Italian style food there and this is the first time we have found something like this in North America. read more

I finally tried out The Flying Fish, but as a takeout rather than dine-in, just because of the way it fit my schedule. It was simple and easy to order via their website which allows you to order for "ASAP pickup", said to take up to 30 minutes. For me, I ordered at 11:35 am and was able to pick up and leave the restaurant around 11:55 am. The SPECIAL SAKE BOX is an option out of their omakase sushi box sets, perfect for any salmon lover like me! It includes 10 pcs of Sake Nigiri sushi / 6 pcs Sake Sashimi / 3 pcs Yuzu Salmon Oshizushi. The Yuzu Salmon Oshizushi was the most unique of the set, with a sweet and spicy finish to it, but even their Sake in itself was flavorful and melts in the mouth. Priced at $32.95 plus tax. The Flying Fish's Special Chirashi Donburi is a great way to try out a variety of their fresh fish! It's described as consisting of their Madai (or Kurodai) / Maguro / Hotate / Hamachi / Ika / Sake / Kanpachi(or Suzuki) / Shiro maguro / Botan ebi / Ikura / Picked ginger / Wakame salad / Tamago / Shredded nori / White sesame seed. Unbelievably fresh and flavorful, this was perfection. This was priced at $24.95 plus tax. Overall, amazing quality and taste. This is personally a high price point for me and so I might deduct some points there but it was otherwise perfection. As a result, this won't be a regular spot for me but definitely a special occasion type place for me to look forward to! read more
