LOVE this place!!! This place is such a hidden gem, which is a shame because they deserve so much more business. The owners have run this place together for over 20 years. The staff is always friendly and attentive, and the food is absolutely amazing. There are many specials that they offer at great prices, but we go for the burgers, which are also fairly priced. The best burgers and fries that we've ever had. The added bonus to this place is watching the airplanes outside, along with all of the fun things they have hanging inside from the ceilings and in the bathrooms lol. I read a review about a few menu items. One of which was their burgers. I have to say, that in Gwinnett County they have one of the better burgers around. We ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger. We both asked for them to be cooked medium. They were cooked perfectly. Lettuce, tomato and onion were very fresh. When they say "Bacon" cheeseburger...They mean Bacon! Smoked and four slices on each! I can not wait to go back to try the Reuben Sandwich, Cheesesteak, and the Patty Melt which all received great reviews. I ordered the chicken breast entree, with rice and Mac and cheese. The chicken was burned with no seasoning on it. The rice was over cooked with no seasoning on it. The Mac and cheese was cheesy with no seasoning whatsoever it tasted like the smell of old shoes. Always a favorite. I'm a commercial pilot and have done a lot of flying out of LZU and for a while I had my plane over at Covington airport. Had many flights on beautiful days to LZU just to eat a "$100 hamburger" at The Flying Machine. Food is good and service is fantastic. Plus on nice days, it's always great to sit on the patio and listen to the ATC loud speaker and watch planes in the pattern. For us pilots we enjoy that kind of stuff! You can park your plane right on the ramp by the patio so it's an easy in and out and back in the air. Would be a great stop for someone flying in needing fuel and food. read more

I'm giving this restaurant 1 star. I came to the flying machine because my daughter, who loves airplanes could eat and watch the planes take off and have a nice dinner. The atmosphere upon entering is extremely outdated, we ordered the corn poppers which were the best things we ate. I had the stuffed shells, there was so much cheese on top of them they could put you into cardiac arrest. When I asked for Parmesan cheese I was told they did not have any. How can you serve an Italian meal with no Parmesan cheese?! My husband said French fries were not natural tasting and my two year old who loves fries barley touches hers either. Also, her hot dog we really believe was not even all beef and it was gray and lifeless. I'm sad this place wasn't better because the location is cool and the concept is great. I have enjoyed my meals more in the past. Not as good as they have been. I had the fried oysters with fried okra and mac and cheese. The mac and cheese improved. My son had the kid's cheeseburger and fries which in the past was a larger portion. Daughter had the mechanic's burger. Hubby had stuffed shells and FIL had the steak. Daughter had the best meal. All others were just okay. Had hoped for better meal experience as we have been talking about going to this restaurant with FIL as he was an out-of-town visitor. But they have obviously changed their dishes, but not the menu. So overall, I would say quality and portion size has declined in comparison to our past visits. The service was fine. This is a very casual place. Not crowded here unless they are having music. Those nights it's a good idea to make a reservation. read more

How cool that a restaurant is located right along the runway at this Gwinnett County Airport, so you can enjoy a meal and watch the planes taking off and landing. How unfortunate that me and 6 of my closest friends met there for lunch on 5.17.14 with our children, and had to leave!! Why? Well, the restaurant manager advised us that a party of 7 adults and 7 children would need to sit in the very back of the restaurant ( which is very far from the windows and the views) or outside on the patio in 50 degree weather with strong winds. We were told those were our two options to keep our children from disturbing the "regular business guest." Our children range in age from 4 weeks old to almost 5 years old. How cool it would have been for them to watch the planes coming and going on the runway...what a great opportunity to teach them about aviation and watch them learn!! We were not kicked out of the restaurant or asked to leave, we were just told that we only had these two places to sit and eat. Did I mention it was 11am and there were no other guest in the restaurant at this point!!! I've been a restaurant manager for 9 years now, and never would tell a guest that their children would disturb other guest, therefore they had to be secluded outside or in the back of a restaurant....even if thats what I was thinking. The lack of tact and control that the manager on duty showed me and my girlfriends, was truly surprising and honestly, inappropriate. I will not be dining in this restaurant ever again. Not only will I not recommend this restaurant to anyone, I will do everything in my power to tell potential customers to avoid this place like the plague!!! I'm so happy to take my money and recommendations to a restaurant that is accommodating to mothers with children. Bottom line, not worth your time to dine here. If they don't care about their guest, imagine how they won't care about the food they are serving you too! We went here with a small group of moms and young kids. We were told the only way we could eat and watch the planes is if we sit on the patio while it was in the 50's with strong gusts of winds. We were told we would disrupt their regular customers inside. Let me point out there was not a single other person in the restaurant. We had to leave with our children in tears. Came for the planes and was surprised at how much the food has improved since last year. The beer-battered fries and onion rings are great (although I don't think they're made from scratch), the "Pig In The City" sandwich was fantastic, and they were trying out Fat Tire as an option for draft beer. My Yelp checkin got us a bargain, and we had a good time sitting on the patio. So many good things to say about today's visit. The only downsides: a) The decor is in serious need of a Robert Irvine makeover, and 2) the draft beer doesn't come out cold, which is why they offer "frosty mugs", which kills good beer, which they don't regularly serve anyway because it's such a PBR crowd so no one has ever had anything to complain about. We have been going to the Flying Machine for about 10 years. Have enjoyed every single visit. It's a family place run by lovely people. We have made so many warm and happy memories there. I have a plane on the other side of the field and we wind up at the Flying Machine on a regular basis. They are under staffed sometimes but just take a number and sit anywhere. The Hamburgers are excellent and the chicken nachos are to die for. On a cold day order a bowl of half chili and half beer cheese soup. The also serve a low carb plate of salad, ground beef patty and boneless chicken breast. Try the Philly Cheese Steak on lettuce for a low carb meal. read more

The bacon was chopped up & was super dry to where my toasted bread broke the bacon. Taking my 1st bite into the 2nd half all I could taste was fish. I have enjoyed this place for many years. My last visit was a bit sad, my server while not rude seemed like he was tired or stoned idk? Then we didnt get the burger toppings the way we ordered them, (cheese sauce? Not swiss) evidently lettuce, tomato,onion & pickle are considered a 0.50 salad addition. Really no big deal there, but was surprizing. The worst thing though was that it was not very clean, the whole place seemed like it had a bad hangover. It makes you wonder how clean the kitchen is. The food was overpriced and a waitress got into a screaming match with one of the customers. It escalated to the point that a cook came out of the kitchen to break it up. I was there with a 4 yr old who was exposed to the foul language and raised voices. The waitress actually yelled at the customer and told her that she was only complaining because she was jealous that her husband was watching the planes and not paying attention to her. My husband and I LOVE this place! We eat at the Flying Machine at least twice a week and have for over a year. The food is awesome and the servers, Thomas and Torrin are so attentive. They bring our diet cokes with lemon wedges to our table as we're sitting down and taking off our coats. They know our favorite orders by heart and see that they're cooked exactly as we like them, and for health reasons we are picky. The cook, Alberto is great. We own a business and are so exhausted after work, it's nice to go somewhere you don't have to repeat yourself over and over to a server with a blank stare when you say 'no salt' or 'no spices'. At the Flying Machine they cook it like you want it. I recommend the grilled chicken sandwich with pepper jack cheese and avocados with mayonnaise. It's not on the menu, but they fix it for me and it's so juicy and tender. I like steamed brocolli, no salt with it. Awesome and healthy. My husband's fav is the chopped steak with nothing on it and home fries with no salt. Totally awesome. The meat is real, not processed or stamped out. Hokey picks all the meats out himself. Try The Flying Machine. Don't let the slightly worn decor fool you, it's all about the food. And yes, we see the small jets landing and taking off out the windows, even at night when we go. And yes, Hokey Sloan and Hank play music some nights. Hokey played with Waylon Jennings in his young days and he sounds a lot like him. If Hokey or Hank are playing, that's just a bonus.
