Today, I was supposed to meet a client at Main 101 in La Porte, but renovations sent us wandering in search of Plan B. That's how we ended up at Wooden Spoon & Bakery--a place that, at first glance, promised fresh bread, pastries, and the kind of comfort food that usually comes with a side of nostalgia. I walked in thinking I'd order a salad. Then something happened. From the host who greeted us to our waitress and the rest of the staff, there was an infectious excitement about the day's special: a simple cheeseburger. No gimmicks. No towering masterpiece held together with a steak knife. Just a cheeseburger made with confidence. Their enthusiasm was enough to change my mind. Naturally, I added onion rings. If you know me, you know that's never a difficult decision. What arrived at the table was one of those rare moments that reminds you why neighborhood restaurants still matter. Five onion rings, each one the size of a small planet, wrapped in a thick, beautifully seasoned crust that was impossibly crisp. Peppery. Salty. Rich. The kind of crust that shatters with every bite before giving way to sweet, perfectly cooked onion. They weren't trying to reinvent anything. They just happened to make the best onion rings I've ever eaten. And I wasn't expecting to discover them in a small restaurant tucked away in La Porte, Texas. The cheeseburger was exactly what it should be: honest, satisfying, and the perfect companion to those unforgettable rings. What made the meal even better was the hospitality. Before we left, the manager, the chef, and several members of the staff all stopped by to make sure everything was right. It wasn't rehearsed hospitality--it felt genuine, the kind that makes you want to come back before you've even paid the bill. Sometimes the best meals aren't found in famous cities or trendy restaurants. Sometimes they're hiding in plain sight, waiting behind an ordinary storefront in a town you've driven through a hundred times. If you ever find yourself in La Porte, Texas, do yourself a favor: stop by Wooden Spoon & Bakery. Order the onion rings. You can thank me later.

She was quick with our drinks and let us look at the menu for a few more minutes. Mom had the Green Tomato BLT, the Missus had the club sammich. But enough about their meals ... I want to review my meal. Their menu lists that the burger is on a brioche bun ... check that one off of the item list. A hearty patty is also placed inside of the bun and along with it are pickles, lettuce, onion and tomato. Check and double Check. Mayo is slathered on the buns, at just the right amounts that make it taste good, but not so much that it slides the innards of the burger all over the place making the chomping experience mushy. Flavors were good, I had just hoped the patty fit the bun a little better. The ratio was a bit more bun sided than oatty sided. My fries, crinkle cut, were seasoned well. Well enough that no ketchup was needed to dip them into for additional flavor. I would have liked a bit more crispiness from a double fry, but these were toothy enough to get a decent mouth feel. The meal for the three of is was about 47.00, so inflation has also hit my hometown dining places as bad as they have hit my current home near The Woodlands. Will i return to eat there the next time I visit Mom? If she wants to go, then yes, yes I would. I would also hit it alone just for their chicken fried steak or chicken. Ciao, Darrell

The atmosphere was welcoming and comfortable, a good setting for a family celebration. The service was really good. Our team was attentive and made sure we were taken care of throughout the meal. They brought out complimentary hushpuppies as an appetizer, and those were definitely a highlight... warm, fresh, and flavorful. As for the food, it was overall okay. I ordered the grilled shrimp with a loaded baked potato and onion rings, and my meal was pretty tasty. Everything was cooked well and satisfying. Several family members ordered the catfish. They loved the texture, it was cooked nicely, but mentioned that it could have used more seasoning or flavor. Another person at the table ordered the seafood fondue dip and said it was delicious. All in all, it was a pleasant visit with good service and a few standout items. A nice place for gathering with family.

The batter on the fish was perfection. The catfish did not have that fishy, muddy taste. Very fresh and so good! The boudin balls are 10/10! Highly recommend. The service was amazing. Our server was friendly and paid attention to the little things throughout our lunch. The owner also stopped by our table to chat with us and I felt that was very nice of him. Overall a very great experience and will be back for crawfish season!

But when I arrived I was pleasantly surprised how it's actually much more elevated that fast food The interior is nicely decorated, and has a southern watery vibe. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the food came out quick. A manager walked around asking how our dining experience was and even bused our plates For those that haven't been to a CSC, they specialize in chicken salad. There are several different chicken salads to choose from. There's classic, fruitier, more savory, spicier, and seasonal options. There's also sides you can choose from. If you're on the go you can quickly purchase a pre-made meal from a refrigerated section near checkout Some tips: Instead of a side you can get an extra scoop of chicken salad. If you're trying to avoid carbs you can just get the scoops with crackers. Also, if you're trying to join their rewards program you can get points for your order, and on your birthday you get a free meal Everything tasted great, and Im not even the biggest chicken salad fan.
