My husband John picked it up to buy it but it was not priced, so he set it down to find an employee to get a price. Commotion ensued. This employee started yelling across the store about someone touching/moving "her" John- to which my husband jokingly responded "I'm John!". He thought she was kidding. She wasn't. She was insane. She continued to berate him. And then me. We walked out.The manager followed us outside to see what was wrong. Then she followed. Still bitching. The manger had his answer. This woman was unhinged. Even her co-workers were embarrassed by her lack of decorum and display of blatant ignorance. As it turned out, the ornament wasn't for sale. We bought one for $10 on eBay the next day. The care and concern for their customers is why they have a long standing (circa 1974) in Setauket . A talented and conscientious staff is paramount to the Salibas, I'm sorry the earlier poster had issue. But, from experience that is too far from the norm. I take pride in the work and suggestions I offer working there as does every employee , if a customer doesn't like my suggestions I work with them until a solution (design and cost) is achieved. I reached out to explain our situation and asked for a reimbursement of the administrative fee, hoping for understanding in the face of a medical crisis. To my dismay, the Art League refused. While policies are in place for a reason, I had hoped that a nonprofit centered on community, creativity, and human expression would show at least a little human decency and compassion. Instead, I was met with rigidity and indifference. This experience left me incredibly disappointed--not just because of the money, but because of the message it sent. Life is unpredictable, and when people face hardship, institutions have an opportunity to show grace. Sadly, the Art League chose not to. I can't in good conscience recommend this organization to others. Art is supposed to be about empathy and connection, but my experience here suggests otherwise.
