Quirky little stop after kayaking! My parents recommended it as it was a fun little diner that they'd stopped at. Unfortunately we were there when it was a buffet and didn't get to do the menu. It was still absolutely delicious and delightful though! The chicken was to die for. So tender, fell right off the bone. Taste was unreal. Pie was equally incredible. Now, this part is weird as I don't usually take photos of the bathroom, however, you can see from my photos that this place was spotless and super unique! Honestly, worth a stop just for the super clean, quirky bathrooms. Manager/staff was incredibly friendly and fast. They kept checking on us and made sure we didn't feel overlooked. read more

They didn't have any steaks even though they were on the menu. Took us over 2 hours to get our food (ordered at 5pm, no food until after 7pm) even though 4 tables were seated, served and left before our food came. Server kept forgetting our orders. My Patty melt was burnt as were several other peoples entrees. Very bad night for Franklin Hotel. No apology or acknowlwdgement things were not going well. read more

Went with my girlfriend to stay 2 nights in room 7 considering we had heard rumors of it being haunted. When we told CJ that's the room we wanted him and Dakota let's us explore the basement and the hotel. They were welcoming to us and were awesome hosts in all aspects. The room was quaint and comfortable. The bar and restaurant were awesome as well. Hopefully next time we stay we will get a chance to meet lilly! read more

It's been a few years since we've been here, but our experience was a good one. Housed on the main floor of an historic hotel, it creates a unique atmosphere that's very conducive to good conversations! Our culinary experience was nothing to write home about as we just had sandwiches. They were fine, but nothing worth driving a long way for. Very helpful staff who were friendly and cordial. While you're here, obviously check out the world's largest strawberry and take a trip up north to see some incredible scenery! read more

The food was amazing! I had the steak and egg platter for breakfast with some hot spiced chai, and I can't even describe how wonderful it tasted! The eggs (I decided scrambled for my eggs) were fluffy and very well cooked. I chose hashbrowns with cheese, and it was the perfect blend of crispy and potato. You could tell it was homemade! The steak was what knocked my socks off, as I ordered it rare. And rare it came! As well as wonderfully seasoned that combine with the hashbrowns and eggs, it was just a breakfast party in my mouth! The entire place was aesthetically pleasing. The staff were very lovely, and had great conversations with me. I have enjoyed dining here over the years - it was a favorite place to bring my grandma when she was a residence of the nursing home in town. We recently dined with a group who was in the area for a family reunion. Our waitress was friendly and kept up with our silly antics. I enjoyed seeing locals wines and beers on the menu, but other mixed drinks are available as well. The food offerings are standard and met my expectations. I always count on great desserts being available as well, so save room for a treat at the end of your meal. Overall, this is a nice historical place to visit and enjoy yourself. read more

Lunch with friends at their recommendation and it was very good. Friendly staff, lovely surroundings, great food, full menu with good offerings. We chose sirloin steak lite dinner, beef sandwich and patty melt. Good crispy fries, nice side lettuce salads, entrees all well prepared. The hotel is a nicely restored historic location in continuous service for many years. There is a second dining room for events up to 25 guests. Open daily three meals a day. read more

I was swinging through town for lunch and decided to stop by The Franklin Hotel. I walk in and the waitresses is sitting at the bar folding spoons and forks. She didn't get up to give me a menu. Just told me the special. I had to ask for a menu. Service was terrible. Ordered steak and hash browns. Never asked how I wanted steak or what I wanted on the hash browns. Also gave me water and never came by for a refill or ask how my food was. The quality food wasn't great either. The steak was thin as a pencil and not very good. We stopped here for brunch on Sunday. The atmosphere is lovely in this beautiful historic building. The service was great, super friendly and attentive. The food was a nice midwestern brunch buffet, definitely a step up from diner fare. Poor service, mediocre food and high prices makes our experience less than memorable. We were there Easter Afternoon for brunch. Sliced ham floating in water with pineapple chunks, little sizzlers, scrambled eggs and chicken and rice were the protein selections. Mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes right out of the can were the veggies. Sweet cornbread and banana nut bread were the breads. Cost for two with coffee was over $20.00 A bit much for what they offered. Only one word to sum this joint up...mediocre. I had the Sunday buffet, a perfectly accurate description is above or below...depending where this falls. I would add that in the heart of corn country, where there was incredible sweet corn all over the place for 100 ears for a dollar it seemed, they were satisfied to put either canned or frozen on the buffet. My partner had a blue-cheese burger that was small, grey and boring. No fries, the fryer wasn't working. He got mashed potatoes which were instant and cold. It's not the worst place I've ever been, but it wasn't the best either. I know I'm in Strawberry Point and you can't really expect "fine dining," but a few small changes could make the place a little better. read more

This place was cool. It's very retro but if your up for a neat old building that has been remodeled then you will be entertained. Rooms are a little small but it's worth the stay. They have really good food in the restaurant and a nice little bar that is super cheap. I would recommend it for sure . read more

Staying at the Franklin Hotel was a pleasant experience for my family! On the first night, we stayed in room 1, which was a very tight fit for three people. The room was clean but showed signs of reduced maintenance through the years. We then were moved to room 24. This room had not been refashioned since sometime around the early to mid 90's (remodeled room shown in facebook pictures). This was not a major factor to us. The room was clean and had the amenities we needed for our stay. Wi-Fi is available, but is not reliable. A friendly, remember this is an older hotel, it will take a few moments for the shower water to heat up. The staff was pleasant, inviting, and extremely helpful! In my opinion, this is an important aspect of a visitors stay that chain hotels can not afford consistently offer. The breakfast at the coffee was a fantastic home cooked experience. The price and the quantity of food served was unbeatable in Strawberry Point. If you like your coffee strong, I would recommend the cappuccino or a latte instead of the coffee. Lunch and dinner are also served here. The bar is very affordable if a night cap is needed. This is also an excellent place to talk to the locals or visitors who regularly stay at the hotel. Some talk about local politics or their sports teams; others tell the ghost stories associated with the hotel. We did not have the fortune of running into any appropriations. I would highly recommend staying at the Franklin if you are passing through Strawberry Point. If you need a more modern and generic style hotel, you may be better off staying elsewhere. The Franklin can not be beaten if you are looking for a welcoming place to stay with historical charm and wonderful people. read more

Two words: BED BUGS. If you like old tired hotels that could use a major renovation, has extremely uncomfortable beds, very thin walls, and most importantly BED BUGS, then the Franklin Hotel is for you!! My wife and I both left this hotel with bed bug bites covering our legs and arms. Absolutely disgusting! We weren't coming back here even before that happened but it sure was a nice good bye present from this hotel. Do NOT stay here. Even in rural Iowa, you have much better options. read more
