I cannot base my review on the food , service nor ambiance-wondering why? Unfortunately they closed their doors leaving us and two other ladies standing in the cold with no explanation as to why they closed so early. A lady inside was trying to tell me they ordered food to take out then they told them they had no food-WHAT!!! Servers didn't even look our way -finally a waitress peeked out and told us they closed at 6pm because they had only two cooks and they were overwhelmed WHAT! Mind you if you listen to recordings it says no reservations needed lol. I was sooo looking forward to tasting the food what a disappointment-if Freaking Rican wants to be successful in New Jersey you have to have FOOD cuz we like to eat lol.

Pork Chunks with little left over Trifongo

As soon as I walked in, I was greeted with a warm welcome. My original plan was to order food to go but, I ended up staying talking to staff & customers and eating at the restaurant. I was impress with my dish (Trifongo with pork). I wish the Trifongo would had been bigger being that it was so good and the pork pieces were the Best I've ever had. The pork pieces were big chunks (half meat and fat) Best Combo!. I didn't want to miss out on the Pernil and Arroz con Gandules so I order it to go. The Pernil was juicy, tasty, and tender but the rice had an overpowering taste of cumin. But, it wasn't bad. The only down size of the place for me was the place not having a bar. Being that I visited on New Year's Eve, I would had loved some Coquito or a cocktail to close out the year. However, one of the staff members told me that they're planning on incorporating drinks infused with... (stay tuned!) I will be back!

Located on busy Teaneck Road in Teaneck, this husband/wife duo, with the husband being Cuban and the wife Puerto Rican, operates the hidden gem that translates from the Spanish meaning "my roots." The reservation was easily made by Google Assistant for Saturday dinner. Upon arrival at Mis Raices, a bigger location after 3 years for some of us, my partner, our friends, and I got a table by the window immediately inside a cozy island vibe filled with the wonderful smell of the home-style food, the beautiful souvenirs of Puerto Rico and Cuba, and the vibrant salsa music. The menu has been expanded since our last visit, so come hungry! For appetizers, we decided on the Croqueta De Jamón, Croqueta De Pollo, and Guava Empanada. As a main meal, we opted for Arroz Con Pollo (Chicken with Rice), Pechuga De Pollo (Chicken Breast) A La Plancha with Salad, Ropa Vieja (Shredded Beef) with Arroz Amarillo y Frijoles Negroes, and Oxtail/Rabo Encendido with Arroz con Gandules. Complimentary toasted garlic bread started our meal. The meal was beautifully presented. The flavors were tastefully delicious and pretty consistent, being rich and authentic. The portion was just right with the price very reasonable, and it's a BYOB. The owners, Ana and Eddie, and their staff make us feel welcome and are accommodating. We can continue to recommend this place.

From the outside, the restaurant looks pretty small, but once you walk in it's surprisingly spacious. The décor is beautiful and creates a really nice atmosphere. I'd definitely come back!

One thing I do know is that I definitely didn't get the chicharrón or the pernil. Once we walked in, the host seated us at an open table. The restaurant is pretty spacious, with music playing in the background. I also noticed a DJ booth, so I'm guessing it gets pretty lively at night. I ended up ordering the daily special, the Pernil al Horno ($15), which came with white rice and beans. The pernil was topped with crispy pork skin, which I really appreciated. It was juicy, flavorful, and the crispy skin added the perfect crunch to every bite. My friend ordered the chicharrón, and it was awesome. It wasn't overly fatty, just the right balance of meat, fat, and crispy skin. Every bite had the perfect combination of crunch and flavor. I'll definitely be back for the chicharrón, as a snack or a full meal. If you're a fan of chicharrón, I highly recommend giving this place a try. * Parking on premise * Outdoor dining available

The issue is they make some things really well and maybe others not so great. I always eat a few things I know they make well. After all you don't order a filet at a fried chicken joint. Today I visited after being disappointed at the Freakin Rican spot on Cedar lane. See that review for details. I went by Elsa's and ordered some Mofongo with their famous Chicharones and it was delicious. Perfectly seasoned and paired with some delicious sauce that was perfect. My wife had oxtails with rice and beans and they were delicious too! We enjoyed a couple of really cold beers each and our bill was only around 60 dollars. The place has a really relaxing atmosphere and the service was good. I had to battle with a couple of knats but it just added to the entertainment, lol! The place could use some remodeling and cleaning but at least they consistently serve me good food at a great price. If you go there just temper your expectations. It reminds me of a roadside eatery in the islands which always serves good food but you have to battle with some bugs. Lmao!
