Brent and brian are always kind patient human beings who listen and understand. Highly recommend this store and the people. Expensive place to buy food but totally worth it. I always went to the Fresh Market on Merrimon Avenue, it was my favorite. I stopped by there this Past Tuesday and it really has gone down hill, some of the food does not look good especially the pizza I always bought, And The prices have increased tremendously . I was very disappointed. I don't know if they changed managers but the attention to details are no longer there. read more

What a great store. Just like being in a food fantasy dream. Everything from soup to nuts. I was truly in awe of this grocery store. I went there to get their fresh eggplant parmesan but couldn't resist looking around. I even bought fresh salmon caught on a tropical island that I never heard of before. I walked around and my head was spinning. Bought chocolate malt balls with peanut butter filling and fresh cherry pie. You truly don't know where to look first. They r expensive but they also have some great sale prices. You can't go wrong here and you will find all your favorites and more. It is like being on a Candyland game board. Ridiculously expensive and today the cashier bagging my items broke TWO of the contianers of pesto sauce I bought. I know for a fact that they weren't broken when I picked them up, and nothing crunched or cracked when I grabbed my bag nor when I went to put my groceries away. It was only when I went to put it away that I realized THE TOP OF ONE WAS ALMOST COMPLETELY OFF. The second of the three had similar damage, though nowhere near as severe. I've bought more things before, this was 100% on the cashier. They should have used another bag. If it wasn't for the basil pesto sauce I like being a house brand from them, I would NEVER shop here. read more

The Fresh Market on Merrimon Avenue is a breath of fresh air when it comes to food shopping - especially with Ingles across the street, which is the opposite of fresh. I love the freshness of The Fresh Markets produce, seafood and meat Market, and I can always find beautiful fresh flowers, candies, baked items and even GF! Management and department heads are knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Are their prices on some items higher then other area stores? Yes, maybe, but in today's world, you get what you pay for, even with customer service. We are grateful to have a clean, well-stocked and friendly store nearby. read more

I go to the North Asheville store sometimes. I am always disappointed. Yesterday was no exception. I purchased 3 already made chicken breaded cutlets - I spent $27.00 on them. When I got home they were so overcooked - probably a few days old & tough & dry. I threw them out - you could not cut them or eat them. I have also purchased boxed croissants & muffins & they were not fresh. I'm sorry to say I will not be returning. read more

Shame on the Fresh Market. There food products are excellent but 90% are obtainable elsewhere. They are the most expensive grocery store in the Asheville and Tampa markets. Yet today, in Asheville, I had the option to pay 5 cents for a plastic bag or 20 cents for a paper bag or do without a bag. Don't know if this charge is system wide or not. I do know it is is not a legal requirement in Asheville because there were a dozen full Harris Teeter bags in my car that I didn't pay for. if, and that's questionable, I will be sure to take a couple of Harris Teeter bags with me. read more

Fresh Market's food IS always fresh. Leafy greens are crisp, cukes have no soft spots, and other fruits and vegetables are equally fresh. That tells me an employee checks the produce bins frequently throughout the day. Though not all their produce is organic, I can usually find what I need. They carry some organic dairy as well. I love their meat department, which carried things like oxtail, which even Whole Foods didn't carry until recently. There is a candy department, which I can't discuss without my mouth watering. Suffice it to say that if sweets are your thing, this is the place for you. Their dairy and frozen foods are pretty standard, but their baked goods are outstanding. I'm not into wines but, if you are, you'll find a broad selection of fine wines from which to choose. The employees are especially helpful and pleasant. They're on the pricey side, so I don't shop there often. When I do go, it's usually to get something no-one else carries. it's always a pleasant experience. read more

I would like to commend a young man named Orlando who was stocking produce on Saturday, February 18. I went to Fresh Market to purchase Sumo Oranges. He had displayed them so beautifully that they looked like a still life painting. They were so pretty that I bought enough to share with my daughter's family in addition to what I had intended to buy for myself. Orlando was customer oriented and friendly, as well. read more

This was the "whole foods" of North Asheville..............in the 1980s!!! I grew up in that part of town and have always enjoyed this store. Laid back....great selection.....AWESOME meat department. Back in the day....they carried NO paper products......but today they do. Expensive? It can be, but no anymore than the Big Boxed places popping up in town now. The lighting....has always been.....this low lighting that makes you feel like you are in a lounge or something *grin*. Produce...flowers.....pastries....I tend to go here when I really want to step up the quality of food I'm buying.....and usually for special occasions. I HEART this Fresh Market. read more

Although there is a great selection, the service/behavior of two of the managers made this place somewhere I will never return to. We waited in line for well over 15 minutes (with no explanation of why) then when we arrived at the front the manager was very snarky in telling us we would have to wait longer. Maybe I'm biased by proximity and familiarity and regularity... but I love my local Fresh Market. I'm in there at least once a week - for a wrap and soup for lunch or for the splurge treat I can't get across the street at Ingles. It's compact and quiet and dark and I can get ten items in five minutes and be back in my car. Get there early-ish for fresh rotisserie meats and don't forget the bakery... which brings me to why I wrote this specific review. Creme Brulees. I have had better - at 5 star restaurants. I'm sure one of my foodie/cheffy friends could make better. But when you're "in charge of desert" for a dinner party, being able to order five brulees the night before for pick up the next and they have "brulee'd" the sugar mere minutes before my pick-up time and packed and ready to go... I mean, does it get any easier? The fresh veggies and fruit selection is a bit lacking, but seasonal and sometimes local. The beer selection is strong. Cheese selection pretty good. The rest of the usual hipster/hippy eats are good I guess. The butcher is pretty good too. I've actually bought fresh bouquets of flowers here as well - but avoid the organic toilet paper. Always cheerful and quick check-out people. Love the place. read more

The Fresh Market is a very upscale market. It offers high quality products at a premium price. The Fresh Market isn't the type of place I would do all of my grocery shopping at, I simply couldn't afford it. However, it's a great destination for key items to fill out a robust grocery list. I like to think of it as a high class Trader Joe's, they don't offer a hundred choices of items like a standard grocery store, only one or two. However, those one or two choices feel as though they've been curated on high by some sort of Fresh Market tasting master who has hand selected them as the items they would offer. The lighting is pleasant, and the store is usually bustling with pleasantly polite people and staff. They have a beautiful selection of produce items all year round, especially the fruit. Their wine selection is quite good, and their beer offerings are pretty okay. Tuesdays are the main day to shop here. Their butcher and fish cases typically run great specials where top notch items become quite affordable. The main thing I find myself shopping for at Fresh Market are: Chocolate Bars The Fresh Market offers some of the best chocolate bars from around the country, my favorite being Chuoa. I've heard rumors the Whole Foods has a strong selection, but I've been grabbing chocolate at Fresh Market for years now. They make totally awesome gifts if you're up for spending more than $5 on a bar of chocolate. read more

This is a specialty grocer that I have visited for years. It's not on my side of town so I don't go frequently. I love when I open an email from them and they have steak or shrimp on sale. That will require a trek across town. For the past month Wild Carolina Shrimp were on sale for $9.99 lb. They were wonderful sauted in butter and some Vic's Garlic blend. They have premade salads, cheese for yards, wonderful breads, luscious dessert and bottles of wine (spontaneous picnic date). Fresh cut bacon, ground sausage, eggs, organic produce and some fruit round it out when you need to make that special morning after breakfast. This isn't a store I buy my everyday groceries from because it isn't affordable in an everyday way; however, it adds to those special meals. read more

This is one of the locations of The Fresh Market that I have visited. Upon walking in, the first thing I noticed was that there was classical music playing. What?? So fancy! The store was very clean and the employees were very helpful and polite. They had a good selection of local, organic, and regular products for all my grocery needs. The down side? Everything is overpriced. I can get most to all of the things offered at The Fresh Market for a much lower price at other local grocery stores. I won the million dollar lotto once. Stopped in here after to get food. 2 bags later and I was poor again.

The staff is friendly and helpful and they do a consistent job of keeping the store clean and fresh in appearance. But that music...ACK! Used to be I could count on stopping in and relaxing after work with the classical music (a good selection including Baroque standards) as I shopped for dinner. It was so nice I made it a go-to stop several days a week. No longer! Now they broadcast the worst kind of nerve-wracking "jazz" that drives me (and other friends I've talked to about it) out of the store as fast as we can go. I wrote a letter to their headquarters pointing out that well under 4% of the US listening population cares anything at all about this kind of jazz (not to mention the much larger percentage of us who can't abide atonal, narcissistic trumpet bleating). The only thing worse would be an All Hip-Hop station. Maybe that's next. Gotta be trendy, right? Gotta mess with a formula that is working just fine, right? Some upper level manager messing with things to prove their worth, I guess. Too bad. Couple this change with what appears to be a significant increase in pricing - partially reflected in lack of sale items - and this is a store headed in the wrong direction, in my opinion... read more

My favorite thing about the Fresh Market is the free coffee (except when they offer "flavored" coffee). The coffee is nice, but I wouldn't keep going back if the quality of their foodstuff wasn't as good as it is. They have an excellent bakery and meat department. The only rough spot is the produce section, which features a grumpy, old produce guy (that's why they lost a star). You have to be careful buying fruits and veggies--they don't always toss out the bad stock soon enough. The check out people are especially friendly and helpful. I also like their deli area, which can be a little hit or miss but over all a hit. This is by far the best grocery store in Asheville. read more

I came to Asheville from Rochester, NY home of Wegman's THE highest rated grocery store in the country. I was so happy to find this great little specialty store that had at least some of the amenities of Wegman's. One of the things that I loved about entering ANY Fresh Market, whether here or in other cities, was the wonderful aroma that was the same in all their stores. That was then, this is now. Things have changed and I may have made my last visit to Fresh Market - at least the one closest to me in north Asheville. The wonderful 'standard' aroma was discontinued a few years ago. A few weeks ago I started noticing an unpleasant odor in the back left corner of the store near the freezers and seafood. Yesterday the MOST unpleasant odor had spread to that whole end of the store. It was so bad I couldn't get away from the area fast enough. Add that to the fact that the staff, many of whom have been with the store ever since I first shopped there in the early 2000's, are no long with the store. AND the use of gloves to handle meat is not employed as it should be. Food in the deli area has begun looking dried out and not at all appetizing. The turn-over in staff is most upsetting. They obviously are not comfortable with the current management either. PLEASE, NOW I UNDERSTAND WHAT HAS HAPPENED!!! I just looked up the new ownership of Fresh Market and see that it has been purchased by Appolo Global and has some people from very low end companies running the stores now. That in itself deserves 5 stars, because around here we also have Trader Joe's, Greenlife Grocery, Earth Fare, Whole Foods, Lowe's Foods, Ingles, Harris Teeter, Publix, Aldi, Food Lion, Bi-Lo, and Walmart. First of all, they didn't have any mart karts, so I couldn't shop. What kind of grocery store doesn't help those with difficulties? But my husband did so this is a mix. He says, no stars. I observed that everything was plastic bagged. They didn't even offer paper bags. This is no progressive haven with eco values, folks. Hubby noted that the bulk food was junk food. No variety of flours, grains, nuts, etc. Very little organic food. No red cabbage at all. The bread was almost all white flour. He only found one whole wheat bread, it wasn't even organic! and today with round-up, you need to buy organic wheat, and it cost $4.29. VERY high prices. We went to Ingles afterward and that same item was $3.33. We will never go back and regret wasting so much money there. read more

This is just one of the rotation of fun groceries we hit when we're in town. I bought the most delicious chuck roast for making my own stew meat. I have never made a better stew in my life. Great meats! I also come here because Fresh Market is the only grocer in town who stocks a particular brand of my favorite soda --- I can't tell you which one because then you'll get them before I get there ;-) The atmosphere is relaxing and pleasant. This location has gotten extremely sloppy. My last few visits were disappointing. I got there around 9 am (store opens at 8) and a good portion of the cases were empty (produce, deli, seafood, meats, etc. ) I could find no one to ask if they carried a certain vegetable and gave up. I needed 2 pounds of shrimp - there was no seafood in the case - and I was told I could have frozen. There was water all over the floor - in seafood and produce section. I joked with the guy behind the seafood counter that it looked like they had a wild party- he snapped at me and said, 'We're short staffed. We're always short staffed." After several disappointing visits similar to this one I will not be shopping here anymore. Asheville offers too many other options. They need to step up their game. read more

I love to cook so I love Fresh Market. The meat and seafood counter is excellent and you can even get fresh clams here! If you want an amazing roast or beautifully trimmed steak this is the place to go. The only thing is watch the expiration dates on the breads, they don't keep them up to date. read more

I've passed this place too many times and had never made it in! I thought I had been missing out and... I HAVE! All the great things I've heard about the menu, the quality and the taste is true. They have a wonderful selection of salad and sandwiches that are all made with the freshest and simple but wonderfully flavorful ingredients. I'm not easy to impress when it comes to sandwiches and salads. It's typically gotta have some culinary integrity and a thoughtful flavor profile. Fresh baked artisanal bread is key as well as quality meat (especially if it's deli meat). A great spread (may, aoli, mustards, etc.) and great salad greens top it off for me. They have a wonderful asparagus and snap peas salad with caramelized onions. The chopped salad is too good! Bacon, chicken, and eggs in a salad is a damn good combo. For several years, we've bought most of our produce here, and been very pleased with the quality. But in the last several weeks, the quality and quantity have deteriorated badly: rotten asparagus hidden in the middle of a bundle, seriously underweight boxes of cherry tomatoes, overripe, inedible watermelon, and empty shelves where there used to be boxes of pre-washed salad greens. I've also noticed the unpleasant odor mentioned by another reviewer. When I asked an employee about it, I was told it was the bleach solution used to clean the fish area. No, it wasn't bleach. Ingles is better than this, and that's saying a lot. Fortunately, it's summer and the tailgate markets are available. And the new Publix in Weaverville is set to open this winter. read more

I'd rather give my money to charity than spend it at THIS location! Went there to get a dinner from the deli and was immediately received was a burdensome attitude. If I asked a question I was treated with annoyance. She only would fill the containers for the side less than half way full. Not used to this behavior at the fresh market. Talked to the manager but he was less than accommodating. I always take my business to the fresh market that is on Hendersonville Road. I have always been treated with the upmost respect there. Having to give the fresh market on Merrimon Avenue 1 star is much more than they deserve. read more
