Now that Whole Pay check aka Whole Foods is closed down Rip. I go to Fresh Market a lot. They have many great ideas even tho it is expensive the wine selection is decent same with the banked Good and the sushi is all house made it gives most Sushi spots in Toledo, a run for their money. The Sushi is way better than Kroger by the way. It's always clean inside and checkout is fast even tho they don't have self-checkout it still moves fast. The Fresh Market is a very specialized market. It is aimed at high quality and products not normally carried, or not of that quality, in major supermarkets or local stores. They specialize in top quality. As a result, you can get things there you can't get other places. I found the employees to be very friendly and helpful. They get to know the regulars and their preferences. All told, it's a place I really like to shop. So, I made an hour long trip to visit the closest location (Ohio) to my home. FM has carried a special coffee that I enjoy and often buy in bulk. Unfortunately - they no longer deal with that supplier - so I can't purchase the coffee any longer. So disappointed. However, that isn't an overall critique of the store. Frankly, the customer service is substandard. Some of the women employees are rude and disrespectful. I had one today who was pretty forceful and abrupt. She told me to give her a second with an edge in her voice because I didn't know she wasn't done. I wanted to go to the girl working at one of the cash register. An older woman made us move out of her way to let her pass. She was really rude about it. I am sorry ma'am,but saying excuse me doesn't make you polite, if you say it in a condescending tone. The younger woman did not hand me my receipt. I have noticed this is only from the women employees. The men employees have been respectful and helpful. If you've been to Sprouts Farmer's Market, this is essentially a similar alternative! Pros: lots of organic and international options. Bulk options for grains, rice, candy, nuts, etc. Fruits and vegetables are fresh. Vegan/vegetarian alternative ingredients. They have their own deli for lots of bread, cheese, and deli meats. Great healthy snacks! (cauliflower organic cheezits, kale chips, etc) Good wine/spirits selection too. Cons: I'm not sure if the location has to do with availability, but lacking in fruit and vegetable options! It seems like they only carry the basic vegetables. I couldn't find common items like fresh mint, chives, green onions, lemongrass, etc. (Winter in Ohio might also be the reason behind this.) read more

Fresh Market aims to be a notch above the average supermarket in quality, but hits that mark better in some areas than others. Produce and meat selections are very good, though there doesn't seem to be much pastured or grass fed meat, if that's a thing for you. The stock of cooking basics...spices, flours, grains, legumes, broths, etc....is OK, but you won't find much out of the ordinary there. I'd say the same thing about most "packaged goods," such as sauces, soups, dressings. Their bulk bins emphasize "treats" (candy, crunchy snacks) over staples like oatmeal and some of those "cooking basics" I mentioned. Generally, less here aimed at "healthy" eating than one might see at a Whole Foods or some similar operation. As others have noted, Fresh Market's prices run high, higher even than Whole Paycheck on many things. Fortunately they do have some good sales, such as their regular Tuesday deals on meat. Prepared food from their deli case is fairly reasonable, and what of that I've tried has been good. The staff has always been pleasant; my one gripe about service is the checkout lanes that seem tucked away behind shelving. Unless there's a line, you may have to crane your head around racks of chocolate bars or magazines to see if there's actually a checker on duty at a given register. Its epicurean aspirations notwithstanding, what sets Fresh Market apart from other local groceries is, mostly, the subdued lighting and classical music in the background. I have an unbreakable habit of eating on the go, and well, The Fresh Market supplies me with all the bulk food that allows me to continue on with such a habit. With the recent grand opening, I don't have to worry about being severely deprived of the expensive, organic grocery stores that I seem to have a love/hate relationship with in Toledo. Unlike TFM back in Columbus, this one could very well be the equivalent of the Whole Foods chain. The first indication that this was the case was the awe-spiring display of the cupcakes, chocolate mousse with chocolate shells, and the like that can be found in the bakery section. The second indication is the myriad options of fresh food -- neither this nor the aforementioned baked goods could be found at the Columbus TFM, or at least not to this extent. Kudos, TFM, for setting up shop in T-town! You have found yourself one loyal customer! My credit card will not be thanking you, however. read more

Yes it's usually overpriced (like Whole Foods), but without a Trader Joe's in Toledo, I am forced to go to Fresh Market occasionally. (They also are located close to where I live, so it's convenient for me...not sure that I would really make the trip otherwise.) Overall, I almost never buy 90% of what's in this store...the produce tends to be too expensive, and while they have an okay selection of deli items, nothing really appeals to me. What I do really like are their Fresh Market brand items. For example, good salad dressing! At an affordable price too. I love their line of soaps/cleaners too. I also go there for their coffee. They have a decent selection of whole bean coffee you can grind up. I've never personally purchased their almond butter, but you can actually freshly grind your own. So if you don't mind paying like $8 for your own freshly ground almond butter, feel free. read more

It pains me to write this review because I love the idea of this store. It's everything I would want in a market, including a convenient location, except: I take issue with the word "Fresh" in their name. I cannot count the times I've either stumbled across or accidentally taken something home that isn't a quality product. Just the other day, I wanted some milk and yogurt. I had to dig around to find some milk that didn't expire in a couple of days and did the same for the yogurt. On a whim, I picked up a bag of apples and when I went to put one in my son's lunch today? What do you know...they're all bruised and rotting. If this was the first time something like this has happened I could let it go but it's most definitely not. I have to recommend their cold smoked salmon from the seafood counter - it is sooooooooooo good I could eat it everyday. It is truly one of the best I have had. They do have a good selection from their seafood counter. However, I am not the biggest fan of ther produce - it is not so fresh. I would not even compare it to Whole Foods on this level. Their bulk foods are excellent - my husband is addicted to Sweet Tooth (a yummy trail mix). I love their spinach artichoke dip and their curry chicken salad. This is the ONLY place in Toledo I can buy great food for my family when I come home. It reminds me of all the lovely boutique grocery stores I have access to living in a real city. They have organic meats and produce, great prepared foods, and lots of specialty grocery items. Their tiny hams are perfect for a small family around the holidays. The Fresh Market is a wonderful store. Is it for everyone in Toledo? Definitely not. Overpriced? Some items are. You have to know your prices and you need to learn what and what not to purchase here. I've been a faithful customer since they opened nearly two years ago. Their meats and poultry are top shelf - you get what you are willing to pay for. The seafood is also very high quality. I've found the seafood to be generally on par with Rohr Fish. They also do some amazing things with the seafood - like pecan encrusted flounder, bourbon salmon, etc. In the meat case, there are some fantastic ready to cook options such as stuffed chicken breasts, various kabobs that are grill ready, etc. IMHO, they have the best Italian sausage I've ever had. All of their chicken is hormone and antibiotic free. Yes, you will pay more for it than that which you can get from the local mega stores but the quality is far superior and you will find you have much less waste. So what's the better bargain? Boneless, skinless chicken breast for $3.99/lb that requires very little trimming therefore less waste or, boneless, skinless chicken breast from Kroger for $1.69/lb. that requires half of it to be pitched? The Fresh Market is a great place to grab top quality ready to cook items so you can make a tasty, healthful meal as opposed to picking up a bag of junk food from a fast food joint. They have an extensive bulk food and coffee selection, hundreds of ethnic items - heavy on the Indian and Asian choices and a wide selection of pastas and sauces. The wine selection is also amazing for this size store. And there are many, many good choices for less than $10 a bottle. My only quibble would be the produce. It can be hit or miss. Seasonal vegetables and fruits are generally very high quality but your everyday produce can be iffy. You really need to spend some time browsing your way through this store. You'll be amazed at what you discover - and there are bargains to be had. I nearly forgot to mention the Sushi - incredible. Without a doubt, some of the best in the area - and that would include some of the better Sushi bars. So, again, try to put aside your initial sticker shock when you go to TFM. Look around and see what is offered. Ready to eat soups for example. $3.99 or $4.99 may sound like a lot for a tub of soup that would easily feed two with the addition of some salad and bread. But it's homemade with quality ingredients. You'll pay well over $2.00 for a can of highly processed, canned soup at the local mega store - and it's laden with sodium and preservatives. Or, a meal for two from your local fast food joint will cost you at least $10 for a bag of artery clogging junk. Stop in and pick up one of their monthly sales catalogs - they have items on special every week. The aforementioned chicken breasts can very often be had for $2.99/lb. on special. Same for the top quality meats and seafoods. Again, it's not a store for everyone. Even in great economic times, many Toledoans would not patronize this store because so many are all about quantity over quality. But, if you are looking for the best Toledo has to offer, The Fresh Market is it. **Update 06-21-2013** Likely no one in Toledo has been more of a cheerleader for The Fresh Market than I have been over the years. The violations are unacceptable in ANY establishment but are even more so in a high end, gourmet market. I've stopped in a few times since the publication of the health department's findings to purchase items such as their organic milk (hopefully, that's a safe purchase) and the store is virtually void of customers. I've wanted to make my thoughts known to local management but have not seen a single manager anywhere in the store on my recent visits. I did write the CEO of The Fresh Market and included a copy of the inspection report that was published in the local paper. That was several weeks ago and I've had no response from the company. This market is clean & has a great selection. The shopping experience is very pleasant, unlike Kroger (which I feel is very unsafe) and Meijer. Yes, you will pay higher prices here, but I think the convenience, quality, and relaxing atmosphere are worth that price. Their bakery & breads are delish, excellent meat selection, pretty good seafood for the Midwest, and they have a wide variety of other types of items. I would like to give it a 3.5. Store employees are all VERY nice. Small store, so limited selection of items. I personally don't think the deli food is more than mediocre, but I have had some great things, like their corn souffle. You can get a very generous taste of anything you want, so that is nice. I don't eat meat, so I am not able to judge that, but my husband said they have a salami that has wine in it that is outstanding. The also carry Provalone Piccante, an exceptionally stong smelling aged Provolone..can't find it anywhere else in Toledo, not even at Sofo's. Same husband as above is Sicilian and loves it. Great candy selections. Love the fact they have tons of organic and everything is so nicely labelled as either "orgainic" or "conventional". Very nice wine selection for a small store. Great selection of bulk items. Downside: wish the meats were organic. You have to really be careful in dairy, Milk and other dairy products are often just a few days away from expiration, especially the milk. Everytime I buy organic strawberries there, they are full of mold within two days. Other berries fare better. Prices are high, but the second you walk in, you know they are going to be high. Their store brand cheeses are almost all made with rennet. Bakery is so-so in product taste. It is a trip worth making, if only one time. Very interesting, have tons of fun stuff during the holidays. Woohoo! This place is as good as it gets. Granted, I may be biased because it is literally a 53 second drive from my house (and yes, I have timed it). I stop here probably 2-3 times a week, minimum. There are so many good things about this place. First off, when you walk in, you hear classical music, which takes you away from the chaos of the day or the sounds of that car you just heard driving down Secor with the dragging muffler. All of the staff are super friendly and helpful here - haven't met a bad apple yet. It's also nice that they typically have 3-4 of their coffees brewed for you to enjoy, near the produce section. There are also many ready to go option, like salads, roasted chicken, take and bake pizza, sushi, etc. They also have a nice bulk foods section - try the sweet treat mix - and a grind your own almond and peanut butters. Great wine and beer selection too and the wines are priced much lower than you would expect. Is this place a little pricier than a typical grocery store? Yes. Is the cost worth it? Absolutely. Another BIG positive about this place: There's just something pleasant about not having to deal with screaming children, classy folks yelling at their kids or saying "I'm gonna beat you when we get home", etc. Even if I go in for one or two things, I'm hooked in the store for a good half hour. Quite average but the biggest problem is their produce. While some is great some has passed its shelf life and is spoiled. And pricing is iffy - sometimes three times pricier than Meijer or Kroger for the same thing. Some items are horribly over priced. I was hoping to find a replacement for Andersons but this will not make it. This is NOT The Andersons. Not even close. And no one is ever there to help out in wine - they have lost a lot of sales to Plum Market in Ann Arbor because of that. Doubt I will return. After 8-9 tries the past two months.
