The Fruit Basket on 4th street has the best produce in the city. I picked up these cucumbers tonight and they're awesome! The longest and thickest I've seen. And they taste amazing! This is a great place to buy fresh frijoles or pinto beans. We buy a couple of bags every year, also red chile ristras.

I love returning to my old neighborhood so I can shop at the fruit basket! This time I stopped in for just a few things. I picked up some chili powder, cumin, a few fruits and veggies, yogurt, and some bottled Mexican Coke and Fanta. I specifically go to the fruit basket for Ginger. I have never found ginger that is so large, unblemished, and spicy. As usual, the ginger did not disappoint. If you want Mexican or New Mexican groceries, The Fruit Basket is the place to go. They have a wide selection of beans, chile pods, spices, herbs, dips and soup mixes from Desert Gardens, which are big favorites of mine, and essential groceries (bread, milk, eggs, etc.) I highly recommend The Fruit Basket, whether you want to pop in for a few essentials, get your chile fix, or to prepare for the holidays (they have great fruit baskets in a variety of sizes), you simply can't go wrong. About a year ago I would have been writing a different review about fruit basket, it had always been my go to place and where I went for fruit , piñon, pinto beans but most of all it was where I always went to meet all of my chile needs me and my family only love really hot Chile and not once but twice I have put my trust and spent my hard earned money first purchasing a sack of extra hot green chile and not only was it not extra hot, it wasn't even a little bit hot, I gave it away to my neighbor and I went down the street to Rosales Produce where I have purchased green Chile on other occasions to buy another sack and they have never let me down, and I will be a loyal customer of Rosales Produce from here on out. I made the mistake of returning to The Fruit basket again a couple of days ago and I bought extra hot red Chile powder for a enchilada and steak birthday dinner it was what my husband asked me to make and wow, yet again the extra hot was not hot, or medium hot, it was not hot at all it had no hotness to it whatsoever Fruit basket swindled me again and while I'm in the middle of shopping for a birthday present, pick up his cake, I have a large bag of useless Chile and I have to go to Smiths to buy Bueno extra hot red Chile thank goodness like it said on the label it actually was extra hot. OMG what a find! Here is the place to find all of your mex/newmex food stuffs. Great prices on chili peppers, ground peppers, beans, etc. You can get a 5 pound bag of chilis from mild to extra-hot. We walked away with 5 pounds of peppers! In addition to food, they also have statuary!!! You can get varied sizes of all kinds of cool statues from religious to pagan and all made of resin or something lighter than stone, so they are easy to carry. While I live on the far east side, I make a point of driving every week to the Fruit Basket in order to get fresh Blue Corn Tortillas. Yep, I drive all that way for one select item - because frankly, I love them and can't find them elsewhere. But, in addition, I love that they have dried foods such as beans and fruits at reasonable prices. I love their dried cherries and snack on them all the time. You can also get freshly roasted chilis here, fruits, and frozen chilis in their refrigerated section. Pick up a package of cornbread mix or blue corn masa, etc. I buy a few veggies here, but they don't carry everything that I want so I wind up going to Sprouts or Trader Joe's for the rest of my produce. I find the customer service at the checkouts to be quick, efficient, and helpful. I much prefer this store over Talin's for example for my southwestern cuisine needs. read more

Today was my first visit to The Basket, and I was totally impressed. We will never buy fresh green Chile at Albertson's or Smith's again!!!! Wonderful people work at the basket, friendly and helpful. Their fresh pintos, baggies of fresh Chile just roasted, and so many spices to choose from at great prices! We got 40-lbs of fresh roasted "hot" Chile for $35. These guys really know how to roast them so they are not blackened all over. We also bought a baggie of extra hot to compare. Nope the extra was way too much heat! Whenever we're in Albuquerque, we stop by to stock up on dried beans, dried chiles, frozen roasted peppers, blue cornmeal, chili powder, etc. We've never purchased fresh veggies, because Albuquerque is quite far from home. Prices run a little on the high side, but we don't mind, given that the place is a small, locally-owned business, and most of the wares are New Mexican in origin. read more
