On our drive to San Antonio we got a bit hungry and after seeing a billboard for Schobels, decided to stop and have a bit to eat. It appeared to us that Schobels was a big part of the Columbus community as there were a lot of local people eating there. We had a seat and took a look at the menu. It also appeared that Schobels offered a pretty good looking and popular buffet but we just wanted something quick and light. I went with the Fried Chicken Sandwich and my wife, a simple Classic Burger. Both meals we delicious, hot and exactly what we were looking for. The fries we also hot and crispy. I know that it was lunch time, but the service with our server did appear to be a bit on the slow side but overall the food was good and well worth stopping in next time we are driving that way and when we do, this time we will make room for some fabulous looking pies that they had to offer. read more

I recently had dinner here at this well known restaurant in Columbus. It's been here for a long time and I expected a good meal. I decided on the flounder almondine for $23. Schobels offers a salad bar visit to most of their meals which I took advantage of. While the number of offerings on the salad bar were plentiful I was disappointed to see iceberg lettuce as the only lettuce option. When the entree arrived I thought the fish was a little dry and not as flavorful as I would have liked. The plate also had German potatoes on it. I would have liked another vegetable. It was a bland meal. I think Schobels may be a better restaurant than a 3 score but that was my experience for that dinner. I would be glad to return and try something else. read more

Five star all the way. I had the buffet at @ 21.95 while the spouse had the salad bar. The buffet came with a BBQ (brisket, sausage, & chicken) that had a wonderful smoke. There was also fried catfish, King Ranch casserole and others. Vegetables galore and the salad bar is actual enough to fill in my tummy! Desserts are included, but I passed since I was too full. Nice restaurant, very clean, great food and not just a little bit of food. We opted not to get the buffet, maybe next time. Each of our meals was so large it was almost like a buffet at our table. There was a lot of food and it was all great. I ordered the 3 piece fried chicken with fried okra and mashed potatoes. I wish they would have put gravy on the potatoes or at least offered as they were a little bland. Fried okra was flavorful as was the chicken which was most likely brined. The chicken batter was seasoned well. I surely enjoyed my dish. My daughter got the crispy chicken sandwich and my wife ordered the chicken fried steak. My husband and I recently visited this restaurant and were extremely disappointed with the level of service we received. After being seated by the hostess, we waited at our table while four other groups who were seated around us after our arrival were promptly greeted, had their drink orders taken, and began receiving service. Meanwhile, no server ever came to our table. After approximately 20 minutes of waiting without any acknowledgment, my husband approached the male host to inquire about our table. He then sent a waitress over. By that point, we were understandably frustrated and informed her that we would be leaving due to the lack of service. Rather than apologizing or showing concern, her response was simply, "Perfect." What was most disappointing was not just being overlooked, but the complete lack of professionalism and customer care when the issue was brought to their attention. A sincere apology could have gone a long way, but instead we were met with indifference. Unfortunately, based on this experience, we will not be returning and cannot recommend this restaurant to others expecting attentive customer service. read more

At least 3-4 times a year we make the trip to Columbus to eat fried chicken at schoebels. I know people like their buffet but ordering the friend chicken off the menu and waiting for them to fry it up fresh for you is worth every minute of the wait. Did I mention they have the best chicken noodle soup too? Double check the soup selection on the day you go as they rotate depending on the day of the week. For dessert that is included I got the buttermilk pie which is always good. All the staff was very friendly and our waitress was attentive. We really like the small town atmosphere. Road trip from Dickinson, Texas to Hill country! Running behind schedule, we seen this place before; and my wife wanted to stop and have something to eat besides fast food. I had the chicken breast fried like standard fried chicken. It was so good with the mashed potatoes and green beans. My wife had a chicken tenders and french fries. We stopped by for a late lunch about this time a year ago. The buffet looked very tempting but we just missed lunch so we were kinda bummed. We ordered burgers instead and they were so good, we made a promise we would stop by again the next time we are in the area to try the buffet. As luck would have it, we missed the buffet again last Sunday. So, we highly recommended burgers for the crew and southern fried chicken with German potatoes for me. What a disappointment! The burgers tasted funny, old, salty and cold. The fried chicken was piping hot but the breading was overcooked. The chicken was tender and moist though. If the breading was not almost burnt, it would have been nice to eat it. The german potatoes were ok. My meal came with a salad(from the buffet) and a dinner roll. The salad was pretty good. I should have just gotten a large salad instead of the chicken. The dinner roll was stale. Oh well. At least we gave them another try. Unfortunately, we won't be coming back. read more

We were on a road trip & my mom recommend Schobels because she had dinner there before and liked it. We stopped in on a week night, it was fairly slow. The dinning area felt really dark and the salad buffet was a mess. It was toward the end of the night so maybe they were busy earlier, but I never saw anyone clean up the salad line. When I did go get the salad, the broccoli was bad, it had black spots in it. Everything seemed fine and tasted ok. I got the catfish. It was fishy. It's been a while since I had catfish, so I thought it was just me, but the others agreed. The fried okra was good. My son got the fried chicken and it looked really good. Nicely breaded, crispy not greasy but it was lacking flavor. The chicken itself was juicy. My mom got the etouffée. It was good but a little on the salty side and really saucy. Service was just ok. It felt like it was the end of the night so maybe our waitress was tired, but we went long periods of time without getting refills or being checked on. read more

We ended up in a campground in Columbus for a few days, and our host recommended Schobels. It was a classic dignified establishment that hearkened back to the family restaurants of the '50s and '60s. The menu favors the German cuisine popular in that area of Texas, which was a welcome experience for us. I ordered the sausage plate, while DW opted for the weiner schnitzel. Both orders were tasty and generous. We also partook of their very comprehensive salad bar, sampling the entire variety of veggie goodies that we often don't see offered. Forgot to review last time and had the same sweet, angelic, friendly server as last time. Ordered the same, Jaeger Schnitzel with German potatoes and salad bar. This is why I fell in love with this dish and started making it at home but their's is way better! I don't care for the purple cabbage that comes with it but that's okay. I had enough food to feed a big ol' lumberjack. Had to take half home. I requested extra gravy because I like to drown my food in it. Hubs had German Plate which was fine, not a standout but mine made up for it. And, listen to everybody and do not leave without the buttermilk pie. Absolutely, hands down, the best I've ever had. My wife's family has been going to Schobels for decades since it opened, and they're long time natives of the area. The staff is very friendly (especially accommodating for kiddos and groups), and you can always count on a home feel and good food. Appreciate all the sports memorabilia from throughout the Columbus, Texas, and pro sports teams. Easy to see why they love dropping in for a buffet or chicken fried steak plate! Bathroom was clean. Our order was quick, communication was easy through text. The missing star is for the online ordering due to advising no tomato due to allergy and no cheese. Amazing home style food! With a super friendly staff that offered great service. I wasn't surprised to see that place was really popular with locals as it had a cozy ambiance with nice bathrooms . My only downside was that the menu did not communicate the fact the sausage from the German plate would be somewhat spicy due to it having black pepper in it but I'm not to bothered by that, I should have figured it would have been like that since it's home made. For 18.95 I had the best pork loin I've ever had in a mushroom gravy, fried chicken, excellent Salisbury steak, and the mashed potatoes were real, homemade, buttery mashed potatoes.
