On day one, my friend and I made a pitstop during a bike ride and split the marionberry pop tart which was huge and as delicious as it sounds - flaky and not overly sweet. The next day, we went back and shared the cinnamon bun (which lives up to the hype) and a slice of quiche that was flavorful, filling, and a great balance of hearty and light. I also ordered a hot latte which gave me the energy I needed for another day of exploring! The service was a little hit or miss - friendly but inconsistent. I can understand, though, as this place gets busy and the employees were very clearly working hard to keep up with orders. I appreciated the day old bin which is not only budget friendly but perfect for PCT hikers! The Stehekin Pastry Company felt like a true community hotspot as I saw locals, visitors, and PCT thru-hikers all gathering over coffee and baked goods. All in all, Stehekin Pastry Company is pretty much a must visit when you're in Stehekin. There is great food and a great atmosphere in one of the most beautiful, remote places you may ever visit. It's worth the wait!

Menu looked good. Great impromptu lunch! They offer curry & basmati rice plates, and you can choose whether you want 1, 2, 3, or 4 curries. We shared a 3 curry plate and selected mushroom, dahl, and mango (they had a selection of meaty curries as well). Food came out promptly, and we enjoyed it at one of several picnic tables under a large tree canopy which offered protection from the rain this day, but would be equally good for providing shade on a sunnier occasion. Each curry was so flavorful, it was hard to choose a favorite. Even between the two of us we probably consumed a little more than half and took the rest with us. It was just as delicious later on. And the hot sauce accompanying it was really spicy and tasty, too. Lots of teens showed up as we were finishing our meal, so this must be a popular high school lunch spot as well. If you aren't familiar with the cuisine, Sri Lanka is a South Asian island country in the Indian Ocean that is a neighbor to India. While it is not part of India, I would describe the food as having many similarities, while being its own distinct cuisine. For example, we had vegetarian samosa at Fork, and while many of the elements were similar, the taste was different (spices, some ingredients). The curries were also distinctive, including a fruit curry (mango). The most unique dish appears to be a classic Sri Lankan item called kottu roti, which was chopped roti bread mixed and stir fried with vegetables and meat (or just veggies). This was my personal favorite, though the spouse was pretty into the samosas and the mango curry, despite "not liking mango." It was super hot that day, but luckily the picnic tables have tree cover for eating. Judging by the weekday crowd of workers on lunch, Fork seems like a hit with the locals, and it's easy to see why. This would be food hard to come by in some U.S. cities let alone a pretty rural area of the Pacific NW. Check it out if you are visiting or live nearby!

I used to purchase staples like farro from my local supermarket. But my supermarket only carried…read morepackages in small amounts--1 lb bags at most, and most of those options were pearled, and they were a bit pricey for such a small amount. I figured, if I went to the source to get a supply of farro, it might be more cost effective, last longer, and it might have more variety while retaining a greater amount of nutrition. Bluebird Grain Farm checks all these boxes. They are located in Winthrop, WA, and do both wholesale and retail. Surprisingly, my local supermarket, located more than 2100 miles from Bluebird, has also started to display 1 lb sized bags from Bluebird. But I don't buy those. I go direct to Bluebird, and nab multiple 5 lb bags, where they are shipped to my door in a nifty cardboard box with an oval sticker that contains their logo. Which means instead of going through a pound of farro and buying more every week, I can get four 5 lb bags that'll last 4-5 months. Fewer trips to the grocery store. They have flat rate shipping, so it's advantageous to buy a bit in bulk. Of course, I order their whole grain Einkorn Berries. But they also grow Emmer Farro, Pasayten White Wheat, Methow Red Wheat, Sonora Heritage White Wheat, Heritage Rye, and more. They also present their grains in several ways: (1) whole, (2) mixed, (3) slightly cracked, (4) pulverized into flour, and (5) blended flours. They also come in various sizes to suit your needs: (a) 1 lbs or 2 lbs, (b) 4 lbs or 5 lbs, and (c) 25 lbs. At least their 5 lbs bags come nicely packaged for storage. It's durable plastic packing with their logo, which adds a pleasant look to the inside of the fridge. Nutritional info and a recipe also adorn the outer walls. Flavor-wise, their einkorn berries are wonderful, tasty, and beautiful to look at. Close to the bottom of the bag you'll find more crumbs, and overall, very minimal amounts of foreign material; usually if there is something that's not a berry included, it'll be a small piece of fibrous thing related to the hull. Those are easy to recognize and pick out. I like to cook it using some chicken stock and spices. It cooks well, doesn't expand drastically like rice or beans, and it's easy to eat. Cheers!

Selection is small, but they've got at least one choice of whatever you need. In our case, some select produce, salad dressing, and a few snacks. I also was on the hunt for some hair ties because I forgot to bring some with (rookie mistake). They only had locally made scrunchies for $4 a pop, but hey - now's the time to support local more than ever! Service is a little slow, but that's okay. The ladies were really nice. They also do coffee here as well. I got an iced lavender latte and it was phenomenal. VERY powerful flavor so definitely only recommend for the REAL lavender lovers! This secret and secluded getaway is the perfect spot to forget everything. With a camp store on property you are never without supplies, ice cream, or coffee. Lake Wenatchee State Park is about a mile away providing breathtaking views and relaxing beach. The cabin is a one bed one bath with a full kitchen stocked with the kitchen supplies we needed to cook meals and clean up. A Keurig coffee maker and pods are provided making it perfect to enjoy a morning cup of coffee on the front porch watching the sunrise through the trees. If wanting to venture out, the town of Leavenworth is only about a 25 minute drive taking you along the Wenatchee River. Leavenworth is a cute Bavarian themed town with plenty of shops, restaurants, and plenty of outdoor adventures.

They have turned it into a working farm and host u-pick flowers and apples in the spring/summer, pumpkin patch in the fall, they have local fruits in the summer and tulip bulbs occasionally. The location offers a view of Roses Lake which is a nice change of scenery as the other wineries in the area focus on Lake Chelan which is also amazing but variety is appreciated. If you visit, try a tasting of their wine or non-alcoholic cider, grab some cheese, crackers and other eats from their public pantry, pick a few flowers, get educated on how they have sheep that keep weeds under control and maybe pick a few apples before you leave.

Rude, power hungry little guy would have dimmed the lights if there were any on! We arrived in Winthrop shortly after the power in the entire valley went out due to the fires. Pardners had their generator up and running first so everybody was there getting ice, gas and necessities. Little did we know the grocery store would open or we never would have shopped here. The prices are absolutely outrageous and I know the little power hungry guy at the register was chuckling inside the whole time. He was rude to every customer in the store, wouldn't answer questions, said no a lot and was just generally horrible. Being visitors, we were in a bit of a panic, not quite knowing what to do. We had driven 8 hours to get that far and the thought of turning around didn't sit well with all of our tired bodies so we figured we'd get some food and hunker down for the night. Sandwiches would suit us just fine... hey, no bread... frozen sandwich rolls would be great once they thawed. (Remember, the entire valley is without power for an estimated two weeks at this point.) Power Boy refused to sell us the rolls stating they needed them for the steamed hot dogs. PERFECT! We'll take 8 of those steamed hot dogs then... no can do, generator doesn't operate the steamer... then we'll just take the rolls... no can do, they're mine and you can't have them! I was absolutely appalled at his attitude during the crisis of HIS town. He didn't want to help in the least, just wanted to ring up those sales. We walked out wondering what to do, what to do, what to eat (not what to drink, he sold us plenty of cold beer) only to discover the grocery store had opened! Wish we could have taken all our purchases back to Pardners... We visit Winthrop a couple times a year and have never shopped at Pardners and needless to say, we will never shop there again. Heck, it's a Texaco... may not ever use Texaco again... careful big corporations, these little town hicks wearing your logo and representing your company can give you a bad reputation. Note: I typically don't rant or rate low because of one employee or interaction and this one is no different. Every worker in there (3 men) was rude, disrespectful and "angry" with the customers. Maybe some training on disaster preparedness is in order...
