When I say The Garden in Stehekin is heaven, I mean! If I died and woke up living on Carl's farm in Stehekin, Washington surrounded by flowers and fresh mountain air I'd genuinely believe I had made it to paradise, though I would love some books and cats too, hehe. During my short stay in Stehekin, I visited The Garden twice, first during a scenic bike ride and again the following morning as I walked back from breakfast. I was absolutely blown away on both visits. The property is peaceful perfection, nestled along the quiet valley road. I could have sat there all day listening to the bees, smelling the flowers in the air, and listening to the breeze. Carl's beautiful dahlias were in full, vibrant bloom and it was clear they were well cared for. I purchased some of the best blueberries and peaches I've ever tasted and also treated myself to a lovely hand salve. There were also natural soaps, tinctures, and other handmade goods that Eire reflective of the deep connection this space has to the community and land. Although perhaps the most priceless part of the visit was some time with Carl himself. What a warm, thoughtful, and fascinating soul. He's been living in Stehekin for over 50 years so I'm sure he has some fascinating stories. We chatted for a bit and I feel like I could have spent all day talking to him about the garden, the valley, the changing seasons, and life in general. If you're visiting Stehekin, do NOT miss this spot. The Garden is not just a farm it can be an experience, a pause in time, a little corner of the world that reminds you of what truly matters!!! read more

I feel like one of the luckiest people in the world to be able to come here and see this beautiful Garden with gorgeous flowers and landscape along with fresh organic veggies and fruit. They also sell goat cheese, yogurt, honey and a few other little specialty foods. I believe the guy who runs the Garden is named Carl. Hopefully that's right. Well he is quite an intriguing fellow who literally walks around barefoot in the dirt with no care. It's pretty awesome. We got the best and I mean THE BEST apricots here. They were juicy and sweet and heavenly! Sadly we've come home and tried to buy apricots out here and they just don't cut it. :-( I highly highly recommend you stop by if ever in Stehekin. read more

What do you get from a barefoot gardener in the Stehekin Valley in late May? Amazing goat cheese and honey, that's what. About a half-mile from town on the right (a little ways before the bakery) is a wonderful planted plot of land with a bell by the door. Ring once and the gardener appears! From his little tented shop in the back of the garden he has stores of maple syrup, fireweed honey, or a number of goat cheese varieties. Wandering is encouraged, so we walked by the beehives, around the rows of just-germinating vegetables, and over to the goats (and the yearling kids) that were the source of the cheese. A welcoming, beautiful stop to treat yourself to some home-grown wares or pick up an excellent gift for friends on the mainland. Definitely worth stopping by. read more
