Starting off, when we checked into our room, they had us in a 1 king room, when we had originally requested a 2 queen room. We had 4 people traveling and 4 people were not going to fit into the 1 king room. When we asked to be switched, they offered us a roll in bed, which was the size of a twin bed, would not fit two adults. When we got up to our room, there was hair on the wall between the shower and the toilet, making us feel like it was not cleaned thoroughly. Our electric car was charging on site and we were running back and forth doing things for the wedding, setting up, etc. No one informed us that there would be an additional charge if we were still parked there after our car was done charging. $58 later and when we mentioned that in our review through the hotel, they said they'd comp our food bill, which was 2 drinks and a fruit bowl, probably $20+. This was disappointing to my mom, who went beyond her means to stay on site for the wedding. This was completely disappointing as we were traveling for a wedding that took place on site. 2 of us were luckily able to stay in the luxury suite which was reserved for the groom get ready room (2 nights). If those stars hadn't aligned, we would not have been able to sleep comfortably in our 1 king room. Also, the suite does not have a microwave in it, we had to request one to be brought up, which I found unconventional. My cousin had their wedding here for how much money my aunt spent between the suite, a bride get ready room, and just the general costs of a wedding, it was disappointing to hear she had a difficult experience here as well. She mentioned that they pulled her away from her son's wedding reception to place her credit card down for incidentals. Why hadn't that happened beforehand? They had her card on file already between all the rooms she booked, so the fact that they took her away from this once in a lifetime experience is ridiculous. She also mentioned that they asked not only for her card info but for her ID. She told them she was not going out of her way to find that when she didn't have it on hand and they were in the middle of celebrating. Needless to say, it was an unfortunate experience this time around. I've been here before and didn't experience the lack of professionalism we experienced this time. The valet service and the staff that supports with luggage were very helpful and kind. It saddens me to have to write such a poor review for such a beautiful place. I have recommended this place to people in the past for general lodging. However, for weddings or any big event, this is not the best of places to host. read more

This hotel is a bit of a mixed bag. What they do well, they do exceptionally well, but where they fall short, the issues are difficult to overlook. The location is excellent--easily accessible from the freeway and conveniently close to Universal attractions, making it a great home base for exploring the area. The valet team was efficient, friendly, and welcoming throughout our stay. Unfortunately, the individual we assumed to be the valet manager was a stark contrast. He appeared visibly frustrated and annoyed at all times, was rude to guests, and was openly disrespectful toward his staff, which was uncomfortable to witness. Check-in was quick and seamless, and the lobby is beautiful with stylish décor that creates a great first impression. Our biggest disappointment was the condition of our floor in the Portola building. Upon entering the elevator, we noticed a strong smell of cigarette smoke but assumed it was temporary. Once we reached the fourth floor, however, the odor was overwhelming. It smelled like old, stale cigarette smoke reminiscent of vintage Las Vegas casinos. Since the property emphasizes that it is non-smoking, we immediately notified the front desk. To their credit, they responded quickly, submitted a maintenance request, and placed another room on hold for us if the issue couldn't be resolved. Unfortunately, while we were out to lunch, we received a voicemail stating that the alternate room was no longer available. When we returned, the hallway still smelled heavily of cigarette smoke, only now mixed with deodorizer. During our stay, several other guests mentioned having the same complaint, and some reported that the issue had persisted for days. The odor was strong enough to be nauseating at times, and we were unable to leave our balcony door open because it pulled the smell from the hallway into our room. Dining was another mixed experience. We found it surprising that no food service is available anywhere on the property between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., especially considering check-in begins at 3:00 p.m. and many guests arrive after traveling. We did enjoy a fantastic lunch at The Front Yard with excellent service at the bar. Based on numerous recommendations, we also made reservations for brunch on our departure day. Unfortunately, brunch was underwhelming. We ordered three different dishes, all of which were bland and seemed noticeably under-seasoned. On the positive side, the taco cart near the pool and patio area was outstanding. The tacos and elote were some of the best food we had on the property and are absolutely worth trying. Overall, this hotel has many strengths, including its location, beautiful grounds, and several standout staff members. However, the persistent smoking odor and a few operational shortcomings significantly impacted our experience. With better attention to those issues, this could easily be a much stronger property. read more

The Garland is a boutique hotel that has retro vibes of old Hollywood, maybe from the 60's and 70's. The rooms and amenities are all updated however, and if you want to be close to Universal Studios or Studio City in general, this hotel is excellent. They even have a free trolley that runs hourly to/from Universal Studios and a LA bus terminal. Our 3-night stay during Memorial Day was great - comfortable rooms, beds, and friendly service. Rooms had plenty of storage space and charing ports, and wifi is free and fast. They also have an agenda of daily activities like group exercise classes, LA hot dog/taco nights, and classic movies next to the pool. Their main restaurant, Front Yard offers a daily breakfast buffet and ala carte brunch, lunch, and dinner. The only reason for the -1 stars is that their AC is an older, in-wall unit that gets loud when turned on. Outdoor Parking also isn't cheap at $50/night with in/out privileges but that may be typical for the area. read more

The Garland is a really nice hotel. It is kept up very well. It looks brand new despite being here at least a couple decades. They offer a courtesy shuttle to Universal Studios daily. I enjoyed the courtesy of the front desk staff. There is a very nice store right near the front desk. The lady was actually very helpful with an issue we had with the double decker bus we booked. She saved us and some guests from Australia some annoyance. The room was modern and we had a sort of garden/patio view. We were able to check in a few hours early but that is based on availability of course. I highly recommend staying here if you want to be in the West Hollywood area. Stayed here for three nights in March 2026. The hotel has a great vibe and they do a great job of keeping it clean and beautiful. Check in is fast. They throw a speech at you and send you on your way. I have broken down my thoughts about each area of the experience. Pool area: kids loved the movies by the pool with the pool noodle. They do a great job here with two spas (adult and children) lots of seating and towels. Trolley: really cute and a great way to visit universal studios. Caution it leaves both locations before the advertised times. Communication is terrible here by the staff. We saw one group call an uber because they were afraid of getting to the park late. Gym: covers all the basics, water station, good amount of weights and machines. The Lobby Bar: not worth your money. We ordered a salad, tacos with a side salad, some drinks, nachos and cookies. The cookies are cold and taste like chips ahoy (8 for $10). The salads are really small and are dry. The nachos were okay, just didn't taste like anything. It was a convenient dinner option but wouldn't do return. Parking: it's LA area they charge you to breathe the air, overpriced like everything else. The spots are small and as a result our car got hit with visible marks. Rooms: nice, nothing special or different overall but the air kept the room cool, the towels were plentiful, the beds were comfortable. That being said I would stay here again. I had the pleasure of staying at The Garland. The front desk staff are very warm and welcoming. We were able to check in several hours before their actual check in time. This is based on availability. The room was modern and comfortable. But let's take a step back. This hotel opened in 1972 by Beverly Garland, the actress. Sadly, she passed away and now her son is in charge. The hotel is well kept and maintained so nicely. The pool and hot tubs seemed very clean. It was too cold for me to go in with my Florida blood, although the pool was heated. Many people were enjoying themselves in both the hot tubs and pools. They also have movies under the stars on Saturday nights. The Garland gives a free shuttle ride to Universal Studios and Citywalk. They also do walking tours to the Brady Bunch house, which is about 0.4 miles away. They have a very charming store that sells all sorts of nice things made in Cali. There is also a nice bar and very nice restaurant on property. I would say the only sort of downside is the location. It is not bad but for what we wanted to see in L.A., everything is a little farther than we wohkd have liked. I would still stay here again because this is one of the most charming hotels I have stayed at. read more

It was SO LOUD in the room as my balcony door faced it. Also, there is NO coffee shop on site. You can order to go from the restaurant. I had a burger for dinner room service which was small and came with weirdly over seasoned fries. In the morning I was told I could get a cheap tea bag to go from the restaurant. My daughter and her family stayed at The Garland last summer and raved about its chill vibe and family-friendly atmosphere. Last month, I finally joined them for a trip to Los Angeles, with Universal Studios being the main focus for the kids. I booked two adjoining rooms for our family, and upon arrival, I knew I made the right decision. We were warmly greeted by Ami, whose exceptionally friendly demeanor was noticed by all of us.The decor is a perfect combination of retro, tropical, and chill. Our rooms, although basic, were spotlessly clean with very comfortable beds. The only hiccup during our three-day stay was the elevators; it seemed like one or both were out of service for repairs. This resulted in two of us in our 70s having to climb six flights of stairs on two occasions. That said, I know the staff did their absolute best to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.The pool at The Garland is a massive highlight. The grandkids practically lived in it whenever we weren't out on an adventure. Pool noodles are provided for the guests, and during the nightly poolside family movie, the kids watched the films while floating on them. The entire pool area offers an array of comfortable seating--from lounge chairs and booths to bar stools and outdoor beds. I think we sat in every single one of them throughout our stay! Having a poolside bar was incredibly convenient, especially when we wanted drinks and appetizers delivered right to our spot.There are two restaurants on the property, one casual and one slightly more upscale. The prices were very reasonable for the area, and we found the breakfast quite yummy. One night, kicking off Pride Month, the Tangerine Lounge hosted a drag queen film screening with fun festivities. I'm so happy I joined in! Brooke, the marketing manager, enthusiastically invited me into the lounge, making it a memorable evening.The hotel also features a great gift store where I bought three souvenirs for my grandchildren. The woman who runs it has worked there for 30 years and says she's loved every minute of it, which speaks volumes about the staff. Another huge bonus is the hourly shuttle to Universal Studios The Garland Trolley Schedule, and the driver was an absolute blast.Should I visit Los Angeles again, I would absolutely stay here. I am so happy I found this little gem in North Hollywood, as I've been to the area for work so many times and ended up in crappy motels for the same price. I can safely say this is now my go-to spot when I'm in town for work. The Garland is ideal if you're doing Universal Studios since they have the cutest trolley that goes straight to the park, but honestly, I'd stay here even without that. The whole place has a gorgeous retro vibe (think groovy colors and not grandma's brown and orange tile) that still feels modern, clean, and updated. It just has character and every little detail feels intentional. They're dog-friendly and it wasn't just a "sure, bring your dog" situation. My older pup got a welcome package with a bowl, mat, toy, and even a card with info for pet sitting if we needed it. That kind of thoughtfulness really stands out... especially when it's complimentary! There are also so many fun on-site touches. Art tours, live music on the patio, even free wine tasting in the gift shop. It makes the hotel feel like a little destination on its own. It's nice to come back from a day of visiting customers to listen to some funky tunes with a cocktail (they have a great happy hour too!) or learn about some local artists that are showcased in the hotel. We had dinner at The Front Yard and I'm still thinking about it. I had the filet one night and the ragu the next. Both fantastic. My dining companions had the burger and the curry. The curry was more of a warm salad and was tasty but not quite as stellar. A solid vegetarian option but there's better on the menu. Do not skip the biscuits. They are absolutely worth it. The pool bar doubles as a patio snack bar and we were impressed with the flatbreads and the lobster roll there too. You can enjoy it from the pool, the patio, or inside the lounge area. And as I mentioned, all the bars have great happy hours, the Front Yard even has a late night menu. Even though it's super convenient for families going to Universal, it never felt overrun with kids. It stayed calm and relaxed, and I deeply appreciate that they have a separate adults-only hot tub. I'll absolutely keep coming back and suggesting it to friends and coworkers. We'd had dinner and breakfast before but this time we went for the brunch and my friend was super impressed. She's the Los Angeleno, but she'd never done the Hollywood scene before and this place, being a stone's throw away from Warner Bros and Universal Studios, emanates that glamorous vibe. We had fun soaking up the fun, seeing all the pretty people with money, and hanging out with bacon hanging out our mouths. What a gem! We stayed here for the weekend while visiting Universal Studios, and I would absolutely come back, highly recommend it. I was a bit concerned when we first arrived, as there was a row of unhoused individuals further down the street near the freeway exit. However, once you pull in, the place is incredibly charming, and safe. The pool was great, and they even hosted a movie night, which was such a fun touch. My kids were so happy. We used the shuttle in the morning to get to the studios, which was very convenient. I also called the front desk after realizing I had left my stroller with valet, and they proactively brought my car up for me--such thoughtful service. Wow! We had the best experience at this family owed boutique hotel. Lots of Hollywood history to be had. It's a private family friendly quiet hotel. From the outside you wouldn't even know it existed. Above all, the staff is friendly, courteous, knowledgeable and willing to help. The rooms are clean and modern. I'm told there is a shuttle service if needed. There is restaurant called The Front Yard. We will have to try it on our next visit. Gilbert at the front desk is the best. I've come to know their names because that's the vibe here, friendly, personal, never forced. It feels like a community, not just a hotel. Overall the family had a good stay at The Garland, most of the staff were genuinely kind and helpful, but one incident left us feeling uneasy. We were there as a larger family group and headed to the lobby to let some family members rest. We had little ones with us (ages 4-5, one with autism), just looking for a spot to hang out. Kids were being kids... a little loud and silly. Then the 4 year old with autism accidentally knocked a lamp and the shade part broke off. An initial worker approached first and kindly asked if the girls were okay. However, the assistant manager followed right behind him and was upset from the start, immediately demanding our room number so the charge could be processed. No acknowledgment that it was an accident, no warmth toward the kids. Just cold and intimidating. When I went to pay the bill, she told me the guest experience was important to them and that the lobby aesthetic was part of that. I understood that. But I couldn't help wondering... what about our experience? A family with young kids, one with autism, in town because of a family illness, dealing with an accident in a lobby? That experience apparently mattered a lot less. The charge is policy, but the coldness was a choice. A good manager is supposed to handle difficult moments with grace and kindness, and make you feel like they genuinely want to help, even when the answer is still no. This wasn't that. The rest of the team was great. This was one exception, but it stuck with us. read more

My husband did quite a bit of research in finding a hotel for our trip to Universal Studios. The hotel was nice AND they offer a complimentary shuttle to Universal Studios/City Walk. They charge a daily valet fee at the hotel. But they also charge similar at Universal lol. I like that they offer the shuttle so we don't have to pay for parking twice. We arrived around 8am, Crystal said our room was ready but we had to pay a bit of a steep early check-in fee, or, we could wait till it was check-in time. She waited a bit to see what we would pick between the two options and then her colleague jumped in and said if we waited a few hours, then we could be let in, no charge. Then she was like, yeah, you can do that too. Umm..why didn't Crystal offer this to us as a 3rd option? That would've been the kind customer service friendly thing to do. So that's what we did and hung out in the lobby while we worked remote. They let us use the free Wifi but anyone can login even if you're not a guest. And it was the best decision ever to hang out in the lobby because it just so happened that some of the ladies from The Golden Bachelor were ALSO staying at this hotel for the weekend for the final season finale in LA later that evening!!!! and we ran into them in the lobby while we were working. My husband and I watched the show so we were extra excited to see them there at our hotel! We ran into them on a few occasions over the weekend and April was sooo kind and sweet and offered to take a selfie with us :) While we worked at a table in the lobby, I observed that Crystal and her colleague were always welcoming the guests and saying "Good Morning" w/a smile as they would leave for the day and just very cheerful. I liked that. However, when we finally were able to check-in with Crystal, her mood changed with us and was not the welcoming person she seemed to be. Her colleague however was helping another guest check-out and asked them how their stay was. When we checked-out, Crystal was there again and she did not ask us how our stay was, or how was everything. So the customer service was lacking from her part on both interactions. Our room was a decent size. king bed. clean. plenty of towels. I didn't quite like the spout design in the sink because water went everywhere, every. single. time. The TV remote didn't always work and had to move it to different spots to maybe get it to change the channel. So that was a bit frustrating. maybe it needed new batteries. There was a nice pool and plenty of lounge chairs. We didn't try the pool but it looked fun. We did try the bar one night. It's a small bar but there's also outside seating where they can also bring you drinks. The gal who helped us was sooo friendly, I wish I got her name. It was quite cold that evening so we decided to just sit at the bar and be warm and then there was a different bartender there. It's a small place and suddenly got super full with a family who was being extra loud and quite annoying. So my husband and I moved to the lobby area, got cozy on the comfy couch with our drinks and it was a much better vibe and ambiance away from the loud family. The manager came over and was very kind and asked us how everything was and if we needed anything. That was much appreciated. I then noticed their little signs on the coffee table that said no drinks in that area. Ooops! but he didn't say anything to us and let us enjoy our drinks. Perhaps b/c he also noticed the bar was crowded w/the family? I don't know, but thank you sir for being kind and letting us enjoy the evening! The complimentary trolley, so we got passes to enter Universal Studios 1 hour early before the park opened this day at 9AM. Their first shuttle left at 8AM and it's a 10 minute ride to the park. We figured we'd have an hour to kill till 9am. NOPE. lol. we got dropped off shortly after 8am and there was already long lines formed for all the "early" ticket people like us. lol. There was a restaurant next to the hotel. I believe it belongs to the hotel b/c we were asked if we were guests at the Garland and if we wanted to charge the meal to our room. There wasn't much within walking distance of the hotel like a pharmacy or grocery store. That would be nice. There was a cute boutique shop next to the hotel for all your California souvenirs. The valet guy was friendly and welcomed us our first day. He was also there on our last day when we checked-out :) Overall, it's a nice hotel and I would stay here again if I ever return to Universal Studios. read more

We've stayed here for a minimum of 4 nights 3 times this year and several other times previously. We are scheduled to be in Los Angeles several more times this year and have referred our friends to this property as well. We have always overlooked their flaws like the inefficient air conditioning system, the broken balcony doors, the outdated streaming options, etc. We kept coming back because the people that worked here always seemed so happy, and made us and our pup feel so welcomed. They have a sign in front of their break room that says "it's the personal touches." And up until now, we've felt those touches. Something has changed though. I would not be surprised if there is new Management at this hotel. Over the course of our most recent four night stay we were lectured over where our dog is allowed to be, where we gathered with family, and were accused of smoking in our room. I wasn't going to post this publicly. I was planning just to resume staying at Hotel Amarano and just stop giving them our business. But since we've encountered a passive aggressive comment by a manager or letter under our door everyday of our trip I decided to post this publicly. If you stay here, I hope you enjoy hot rooms, loud kids, nickel and diming management, expensive parking, loud evenings and all the other fantastic amenities that the Garland provides their guests. The golden days of this hotel are in the past. Whatever changes have recently been made have been for the worse. It used to be a charming place to stay. Now it's just another universal studios shit hole. ***UPDATE*** The hotel also doesn't take security very seriously. Their staff checked new guests into the room that our friends were already booked in. Imagine that surprise. Our friend was undressing when the door was opened by another couple who were just mistakenly assigned to their room. How did the Garland apologize? By waiving the fee for 2 of 3 parking days. This was just a one night stay for us to be close to the airport and even 1 night was too long. The rooms and hallways smell musty and honestly like cigarettes a little bit in our room. I don't think they separate pet friendly rooms from other rooms because my allergies were horrible. We originally asked to switch rooms but it wasn't worth it since it was in the same building. A floor above was almost worse as far as mugginess. The beds were so soft and sunken in... zero support for your back. The room was super hot. The bathroom felt like we were smushed in an RV bathroom and they had no fan so it was extremely hot to take a shower. The water pressure was nonexistent in the shower as well. I'm sure it's close and convenient for those visiting the parks but .... I personally wouldn't stay again. It was very uncomfortable. I'm surprised it was so highly recommended. read more

This place is a bit of a tourist trap. $50 to park in a crappy parking lot. It's basically a Motel 6 type hotel they remade into a wannabe mid century modern hotel. Overpriced for what it is - not a $300+/night plus parking kinda place. It is clean but the walls are brick and the shower tiles show wear. The parking really leaves a bad taste / it's not monitored and there are signs everywhere saying don't leave your valuables in the car. Don't charge it it's this shady. read more

Booked this place for our universal studios trip with our family of 20 because it's close to the park. They provide a shuttle that brings you to the park which is such a convenience. The hotel itself is nice and super clean. Customer service is really good , everyone is super helpful and nice. The hotel has so many amenities. We really enjoyed our stay here. We will definitely come back next time. read more

Love this hotel and so did the rest of our party. Boutique style, but not so small it did not have great admontites. Beds were very comfortable; rooms are modern and clean with a 70's motif. Good variety of food, nachos are really good and made to order tacos. Nice pool with pool side service and family movies pool side in the evening. We will defiantly stay again if in the area. read more

The lobby and communal areas are very clean and well-maintained, which gave a good first impression; our rooms were also cleaned up very well. However, there were many other inconveniences we faced throughout our stay here. The shuttle to Universal Studios was not running during the duration of our stay, and we had to be crammed into a small van which was unable to accommodate all guests. Wait times were extremely long and we ended up booking an Uber instead. Elevators and vending machines either had issues or were not working. Multiple trips had to be made, resulting in very long wait times. Dining was acceptable overall, but we had to wait over 30 minutes for a singular pancake to be served. Also, I have never personally stayed at a hotel that charges $10 to use a microwave. read more

Great place to stay mostly if you have a family. Always have a beautiful brunch every Sunday. They have a trolley that runs on the hour every hour to Universal and Universal City walk which is very convenient even if you don't go to Universal Studios the city walk is a great place to do a little shopping and grab dinner. We stayed in the family suite which was perfect for the kids. The restaurants are perfect. They even have movie nights on the weekends at the pool beautiful facility. Nice gym, yoga classes every Saturday morning close to everything in Los Angeles highly recommend. read more

While the hotel itself offered a decent level of comfort, I unfortunately would not choose to stay here again. Upon check-in, I was charged a different rate than my original booking price -- a small difference of $14, but still unexpected and poorly explained. The real disappointment came later in the stay. Our room was located near a hall the property rents out, which was fine until Saturday, when a wedding party took over much of the parking area, making it nearly impossible to find a space near our room. The most troubling experience, however, happened Saturday night after a long day at Universal Studios. My family -- including my husband, our 2-year-old, and our three other children (one celebrating a birthday) -- waited over two hours in the cold night fog for the hotel shuttle that never arrived. Multiple calls to the hotel went unanswered. Eventually, another guest informed us that the shuttle had broken down and the hotel had told guests to find their own way back. With no communication, no backup plan, and no assistance offered, we were left to walk nearly 35 minutes back to the property through dark, foggy, and unsafe conditions. For a hotel of this size and revenue, it's unacceptable that their shuttle service isn't properly maintained or supported with contingencies. I submitted a review on another website the morning of checkout, and afterward, it felt as though the staff began picking on me in subtle but noticeable ways -- small acts that made our departure more uncomfortable. To make matters worse, two days after checkout, I noticed that while the main stay charge had posted, a duplicate charge was still pending with the security deposit both charges totaling over $1500. I've been to The Front Yard a few times but never ventured inside The Garland Hotel. The lounge area inside The Garland is so charming. It has a warm, cozy atmosphere. I met my beautiful sissy (Melineh) here for drinks and we spent three hours just chatting and catching up. The couches are so comfortable, you feel like you are in your own living room. Byron, the bartender, took great care of us. He was a doll. The cocktails are creative - they even have spiked snow cones. I started with the Purple Power (Vodka, Crème de Violette, Lavender tincture, & lemon juice). It was very tasty. We ordered Fresh Celery & Carrots with homemade ranch and the Adobe Fries. The homemade ranch was very good, and the adobe fries were fantastic! They were soft and the seasoning made them addicting. The food is brought to you in a plastic box covered with a lid - an extra special touch for presentation. I would have never thought to schedule a meet up at a hotel bar unless I was staying there but this place was so lovely. I know I'll be back. *Valet $8. Self-parking free with validation. This bar is located at the lobby of the fabulous and hip GARLAND hotel I am obsessed with the relaxed atmosphere of the bar and low chairs that feel like I am in a hip 1970's home. CHRIS, the bartender, is great. He was funny and hospitable. Bar menu is extensive and drinks are fabulous I found out later he is born and raised in SF which makes sense why he is so nice- hopefully Los Angeles does not take away his positive aura. Manhattan was great Charcuterie was a D-. Horrible presentation, served in a tin box. Just NO. Start again. read more
