All marketing, bland shawarma. I was in the area and stopped by to try the hype. Compared to what you can find on almost every corner in Toronto, this place was very underwhelming. I've been coming here for over 10 years, and it's still one of the best shawarma spots in Ottawa. If you haven't tried it yet, you definitely should. My go-to order is the kofta kebab platter with their famous Garlic King Crazy Fry -- always amazing. Near St Laurent Shopping Mall. This local restaurant is a popular dive. We had stopped by during the orange zone designation in the fall of 2020 while looking for a shoe repair store. We had heard of their famous pita souvlaki paninis style. We wanted to try it. No dine-in it was only pickup. We found the typical garnishing: beats, garlic sauce, onions, lettuce and tomatoes with chicken pieces. All put into a pita bread toasted in a paninis fryer. Although we found everything tasted great together! We found however the chicken to be on the dry side. Paninis style is a good idea but not for the price. We recommend that you try the others more affordable like the platter or their ordinary pita. Parking in front of the store. $$ read more

And always take extra garlic sauce in my potato. The price is average but I feel like all ingredients are fresher then many place in Ottawa. They are also more generous with the chicken in the pita. This is one of my top favourite shawarma places in the City and let me tell you why: generous portions, not too greasy, amazing curly fries, and wonderful garlic sauce. It's a bit of a distance for me to get to this location, but whenever there is an opportunity, I'm happy to dine at garlic king. My review is entirely reflective of the food! I will say that the atmosphere of the area is a little odd and a little over done. They really play on the "garlic king" theme, and the decor inside the restaurant is overkill. I ordered the Family Platter here for dinner with my family. It's a great deal because for $29.99 you get 10 kebobs, rice, 2 large sides, 4 cans of pop, a bag of pitas, a tub of sauce and 4 pieces of baklava. The food was good. We ordered 4 beef, 3 chicken and 3 kofta kebobs (however they did make a mistake on our order and switched the beef and chicken quantities - we didn't realize this until we got home). The beef kebobs were really tough and chewy, so it's probably all for the best that we got fewer of those. The kofta though was great. The seasoning was delicious. The chicken was moist and also good. For our sides we got a fatouch and fries. The fatouch was great and the serving size was good. It was romaine lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, tiny pieces of peppers and pita crisps tossed in a tangy dressing. The fries were spiral shoestring fries. I normally love these kind of fries but the ones here tasted like they were sitting around all day and then refried when we ordered them :( The rice was ok, its just plain rice though, no pieces of vermicelli in it or anything else like at some other places. It was salted and buttered I think. You can get half garlic potatoes, half rice if you want. For the sauce we got garlic sauce. It was creamy and garlicky but other than that, pretty unremarkable in my opinion. The baklava were tiny pieces, but they were good. Not overly sweet or sticky. I feel that the food is good but not outstanding, however, you get a good amount for the price. Also you get a lot more selection and options for the platter than you do at most places. The staff are friendly. The guy at the cash tried to be funny. Decor is a little tacky for my tastes but I think that is what they are going for. There's a mannequin of the Garlic King there and what looks like a piece of a midway ride. They also have pictures of the Garlic King with all sorts of famous people, and they display all their certificates like one from the mayor congratulating them on their opening. We didn't eat there though, we got takeout. There's free parking in the lot in front and on the side. read more

This place was average at most. The half chicken half beef meat pita was on the dry side. I tried the monster sized and it isn't as big as it sounds. There was still plenty of room for filling. I dont recommend the salads either. I found myself extremely thirsty after the meal. The employees here were polite however the owner seemed a bit arrogant. I have had much better shwarma. Wow, what an experience! This place is not for a classy meal, guys, take note. It IS for someone with a great sense of humour who appreciates yummy Lebanese food, disco lights, and fake flowers. As soon as you park you are bombarded with images of The Garlic King's face. From the stationary van plastered with his face (and always lit up and decorated for the season!), to the bright neon sign (also adored with his face), you can't miss this guy. When we entered, it was a sort of surreal experience. Disco lights, aluminium palm trees, a Ferris wheel ride for kids, and an unreal amount if fake plants. The seating area is reminiscent of a bingo hall or legion - plastic tables with plastic chairs, red draped everywhere, and...hanging wreaths on the walls? This place is hilarious. The Garlic King himself took our order, kidding with us the whole time, and making his lifelike statue wave to is from across the room. This guy is kitschy and I love it! We ordered the special - a regular size chicken pita with garlic potatoes and a drink for $8.95. The food was really good! I especially love that they toast their pitas - super delish! The potatoes were great, and all the ingredients were fresh - what more could you ask for? I noticed they really cater to the gluten free crowd, even carrying New Grist beer (gf free from MKE!). Oh yeah - they're licensed, which is even more awesome. This would be a great place to bring kids, and I'll be back here for sure. Great staff, yummy food and hilarious atmosphere! read more

3.5 stars. Delicious food and friendly, funny staff. Ordered the falafel plate which came with two sides. (Man, am I ever starting to miss eating chicken shawarma). I really was not that impressed with the falafel. The texture was fine, but it was served cold and had some spices in it that threw me off. It was not "throw in the garbage awful", but it was not amazing. The sesame sauce did revive it and make it a touch more edible. The plate also came with rice and garlic potatoes. We chose our two sides to be king fries. We also got them to put the "special sauce" over the fries. FANTASTIC! An absolute must try!! I don't really care for rice, but I devoured the rice in minutes. It was perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection. The garlic potatoes were amazing, I think the best I ever had. We also got some pickles and they were also amazing and addicting. Ordering threw me off. I did not know if I was supposed to stand in line at the cash and order and pay first or if it was the other way around. (I am used to ordering then paying at my regular shawarma joints). After standing there confused, I saw red flashing lights move across the cash register stating "order here", so that is what I did. The cashier was hilarious, and he totally knew the hubby and I were "newbies" to this restaurant--I guess they have a following of regulars? He cracked jokes and made us feel welcome. With all this being said, I am definitely looking to go back in the future. Will try the vegetarian platter next time and stock up on some more king fries; but skip the falafel. read more

Service is going downhill drastically. We are LONG TIME customers. For the second time in a row, The Garlic King has cancelled our Skip The Dishes order. According to Skip The Dishes customer support they refused our order claiming they can't guarantee no onions or peppers (which we requested, not because of allergies). I call BS on you Garlic King. You and I both know the reason you're declining our orders is because last month half our order was missing and we complained to Skip The Dishes about missing items. Your Skip The Dishes rating has gone from 9.6 to 8.3 in the last two months, obviously we aren't the only customers you've been treating like dirt. read more

This a great place to eat! If you're vegan or have allergies you'll love it! They are one of the rare restaurants that makes their garlic sauce without egg- the traditional way! So if you are vegan or allergic- you can still enjoy it. Also- they have a setup in restaurant to keep vegetarian/ vegan / people with allergies food separate from the food with meat. When we order from them through SkipTheDishes they never disappoint- being vegan we also make changes or special requests when ordering and Garlic King never screws up our order and we appreciate their care when putting it together. I was told that they even grow their own garlic which is wonderful. No garlic from China! Definitely worth trying if you haven't already. Oh and I forgot to mention, the garlic king always gives back to our community and shows up at so many schools in the area and is adored by all the kids who see him pull up in his garlic king van, adorned with lights and all things Garlic King! Super friendly and helpful service, you have to have a sense of humour when you go in- the place is tacky- but in a good way! An experience you won't soon forget. This place is hot and cold. My advice is don't let the guy (sidekick) make you a Shawarma and don't go towards the end of the day. Just too much confusion as to who is making the sandwich given all the information you have to give the King when ordering and paying for you food. He asked me 5 times if I want it toasted then after a long wait the guy doesn't toast it and has no idea what I ordered. Then he tries to make up with his extra dry imaginative sense of humour. Stopped by for lunch while visiting my in-laws. They've never had Shawarma before (and they live in Ottawa!!!) so we decided to treat them to something different. The staff behind the counter overheard some of us were new to the cuisine and immediately put together a generous sample plate of all their sides to try before ordering. Quite a nice gesture. After poking around the colorful platter we all decided on the Shawarma lunch special. A pita, two sides and a drink. I can vouch for the donair, it was amazing. Got to try a taste of the toasted chicken as well. I get the feeling any of their 4 available options (chix, beef, donair, veg.) are going to be good to go. As for the sides, the garlic potatoes were a big hit. All four of us opted for it. I also tried their hummus and pita chips. Excellent. it's a super kitschy place. Casual and corny but oh so good. The fact that this dude, the heralded Garlic King, has a van converted ala Pope-Mobile sitting in the parking lot out front gives'em major bonus points from where I stand as well. So I often go here, cause they make the best gluten chicken wraps. But today I was very very disappointed. I decided to bring my grand kids here to try their kids meal. The menu says one chicken pita with fries and drink. Well after we order the man at the cash says they can get their drinks out of the fridge over there. We went to look as the pitas were being made. In the fridge was nothing but pop. After searching I found two juice boxes( orange juice). One was squished. I told my grandson I would get him something else. at a store near by . Than I saw him go to a other fridge beside the cash, as he saw someone else getting a drink out. He open the door and I heard in a loud voice... what are you doing in there! I went over and looked at my grandson, he said nana they have ice tea. So I grab it, the man said to me you can't take that drink with a kids meal. I said and why not? He than starts telling me, cause I can buy those drinks(pop) for 10 dollars a case. A case of ice tea costs me over 15. I was like so. You offer a kids meal with a drink it does not specify what drink? And he says well that's my rule. I said if you are going to offer kids meals you need to have drinks for kids. Not pop. I was about to go outside and get a dollar and throw it at him and say here is your dollar for your ice tea. I left there very upset. I have been there many times love the food. But this guy was very rude to me and to my grandson. Long story short. Get some fff kids drinks for your kids menu like other places offer. Younger kids don't drink pop. Stop being so dam cheap. It won't be me going back to get a sandwich I will leave that up to my boyfriend. He really ruined my day read more

First of all, to start with this place does'nt even deserve 1-star!!! I had such a terrible experience with food and customer service at the same time. Bought the Family Platter for $44.95 and it is such a RIP OFF!!!! They have advertised the description so falsely that you fall in trap until its too late to realize. The portions are so minimalistic that you can't even imagine. Feeds 4 people as it says, excuse me this is just enough for 1 person. This is a place where you go to a Shawarma place and order platters, and expect Tahini sauce to be drizzled over your salad but not to forget they are here to RIP you off. The owner and staff made such a huge deal about me requesting to drizzle sauce over my salad. He kept pushing for a dollar extra charge. When I asked the man on counter about why would you charge an extra buck for that as when you go to any other shawarma place in entire Ottawa area you get Tahini or dressing on your salad as complimentary. His reply was 'yeah this is like when you go to Walmart, you have to pay for everything'. He started to cuss at me and even asked to get my food from somewhere else next time. Staff is rude, arrogant, non deserving and ripping people of Orleans community and I left with such a mental trauma. I was so shocked at the mans reply who is supposed to be at the front counter. Don't know if he's the owner? Not to mention, I even tipped these non deserving staff members before hand and I left so annoyed and frustrated with the food and customer service I received. Came home hungry and ready to eat my food, and not a surprise the chicken kabobs were undercooked. Our little one in the family got sick this morning and had been throwing up. Literally, the WORST WORST WORST shawarma place in Orleans area. Stay away from this experience and avoid this place at any cost. You'd get better value at Chez or Prince! the crazy cheesy personalities (some people are not fans but it doesn't bother me), the foods pretty good, the chicken can be dry most of the time though (I believe its from frozen chicken). All around great Lebanese food. However the donair meat at times is dry. I have been going here for over 10 years. The prices continue to climb; but the garlic king is tough to beat in the Lebanese food racket in Orleans. Try the garlic potatoes for sure, just keep an eye on the spits of meat, and watch out for dry beef. read more

My husband and I love Lebanese food, and we like the Garlic King. The kebabs are great, especially the chicken. They also have beef and ground meat kebabs. The chicken shawarma is also great. They have a lot of different types of salad like bean salad and pasta salad. We usually just get the fattouch. You can also get fries instead of roasted potatoes but the fries are chewy, roasted potatoes are better. Lots of choices. read more

I love this place. Everything I have had has been great! I usually go with a chicken-small. The sizes are crazing big! The Monster is just crazy! I love the garlic potato salad and spicy hummus! Yum! This place has been around for a long time, I see people going in an out of here at all times of the day (and for good reason too!). The owner is friendly along with staff, the meat is absolutely to die for and the 'Adele' sauce along with the fries are an instant classic for me. It's a staple of Ottawa food.
