I've been coming to the gaslite for 20+ years. It is a karaoke dive bar, so this should be your expectation. They recently updated their karaoke list and they have just about everything now. Depending on when you go, expect a karaoke line. No food, just popcorn but you can order pizza and bring it in. They have a big dance floor and a stage. There are some booths around the sides. Adam, one of the bartenders is super friendly. They also have a big patio in the back. Prices seem to have gone up recently with a titos/soda coming in at $15! Seems pricey but it is Santa Monica. What's not to love?! This small, dimly lit dive bar in Santa Monica offers cheap, strong drinks and karaoke. Weekends can get busy with birthday party reservations, and the song request queue can be long, so get your requests in early! The vibe is great! I went around the holidays and there was a lady with a mistletoe giving and receiving kisses, which was a hoot. I'm a little too shy and sober to sing, but I cheered on my friends as they belted out karaoke classics like "Wagon Wheel." Had the time of my life singing my heart out with a fun group of friends, met new friends on the dance floor and had heaps and heaps of complimentary popcorn. If you're expecting everything to be perfect and seamless or you're picky / high maintenance then don't come here--it's a real down to earth place with a handful of regulars who will absolutely keep ordering over and over and I find that both hilarious and charming. The last time I came here was on a weekend awhile back and it was fun! I parked on the street before walking in and as soon as I set foot in the joint that night, I felt the joy that others were experiencing. Everyone was singing to a famous, familiar song on karaoke and I immediately chimed in to join the crowd as well before heading to the bathrooms in the back. The drinks were solid and the karaoke was fun throughout my time there! I am so glad I came through that night since they were singing hit after hit. I've been coming to this classic west LA bar for over 25 years. I love the old school vibe, the singing & bartenders and Karaoke DJs are super nice & great too!! But... My issue is the restrooms... They are super gross, and smell like urine. The stall-partition walls are so scary & gross... Looks like you could catch hepatitis if you lightly touched them. We love it here! And always make it a point to stop by when in town. It's an intimate dive bar type place that has good prices on drinks and fun karaoke. And while I don't partake in the karaoke it's always fun to listen and vibe. I LOVE the gaslite and I would've given them 5 stars had it not been for Marina. She's unpleasant, unfriendly, she doesn't smile and gives the stank eye and sadly.... She mans the karaoke machine which he the whole reason why the gaslite is fun. This chick ruins everything. Not only does she do a terrible job manning the machine, she constantly walks back and forth which was distracting, she kept staring at herself in the mirror while dancing - it was like watching a car wreck in slow motion. I wish she would've not ruined the night for us. We all ended up leaving because of this unfriendly woman. read more

Came on a Friday night. They have live karaoke. It's very small, dive neighborhood bar. They have about 4 booths and the rest is bar seating. Old school leather tufted booths. Small corner stage or more like a riser for folks to sing. One local DJ, nothing fancy. Super casual. Bartender was friendly. Seems like they have regulars. Had a glass of red wine that was about $7 bucks which is unheard of in Santa Monica. It's definitely old Santa Monica small town vibes. Nothing hipster or fancy here. They have TV's at the bar 8 and around the corners so you can watch the game! They also have lottery keno you can play. Juke box too. Parking is on the street if you can find it. Dark and musky I would call it. lol Apparently it's been here over 15 years since the 60's?! That was probably the last time they upgraded the decor. lol Also, if you get here around 8:30pm or so it's quiet. It starts to pick up around 9:30pm and for sure by 10pm. read more

I visited this Karaoke Bar with some friends and the vibe there was just...off a bit. It was bustling and crowded, people were singing Karaoke and they had a nice queue. I guess maybe I was expecting more of a dance club vibe, but it seemed like the only people dancing were friends of the people choosing songs. I find it quite entertaining writing a review for this dive karaoke bar, we of course had a freakin blast but keep in mind it's a weird place. Small, dark, old fashioned, need updating and some tlc but who cares when your having so much fun. It matters who you come with, so plan on bringing your favorite people with you and let loose. There are some unique folks in there.. lol You'll have to find the song catalog by the d.j, then write your name down on the sheet of paper and hope that your called in the correct order - often there are irregularities in the order of registered singers!!! So hound the d.j if need be. The bar has pretty much everything so that's cool, and there's free self serve popcorn. You can bring in your own food or dessert. Lots of birthdays celebrated here as to my observation. Divey place indeed. read more

Came here on a Friday night because my friend lives across the street. This bar is... OK. It is my first choice for a drink on a weekend? Probably not. The crowd seems young and thirsty. People seem well dressed, if that means scantily dressed as well. We didn't even bother to try to do karaoke. It was so crowded inside and the karaoke singers left much to be desired. Luckily they have an outdoor area with large patio tables. We sat there -- a nice reprieve from the madness inside. But every time I went inside, my ears! Singing was quite bad. I guess it's a good place to do karaoke if you are worried about your singing voice. Get a few beers, or liquor in you and croon away with reckless abandon. It seems like a no judgement zone here. it's a big difficult to get the bartenders' attention to order drinks. Drinks are fine...I suppose they are reasonably priced for the location. We also ordered shots and they provided soda as a chaser, but the soda was horrible! It was so flat... yuck! Glad that i didn't get a well drink here... They have popcorn with a variety of things to add to flavor it. However, it seemed like they ran out of popcorn relatively early in the night and did not have any plans to pop more. They also do not have a kitchen here, so if you come hungry, the only food that you'll get is the old, cold popcorn. read more

Never going here again. Came here for the first time to karaoke. I put my name on the list. The karaoke DJ was named Mitch. New people were coming after me to sign up and they were going on before me. Totally unfair and racist or whatever it was. The karaoke DJ Mitch kept singing several songs in between other people's turns. I waited for an hour before I finally gave up and left. He said if I wanted to sing, I would have to pay him $40 otherwise I'll never get up to sing. I watched as several people were giving him cash and Venmoing him to advance in the line. Decent dive vibe but there is nothing on draft and they have the audacity to charge $8 for a 12oz PBR. All the drinks were overpriced for the quality of the place. This was my second visit to this spot in the last 5 years. Like my last visit, I found the "Host"/DJ Has two waiting lists; one for his friends, which he keeps by the music machine, and one on a clipboard, for the general public. Last night, Tuesday, I literally waited two hours, and saw 7 people perform multiple times before I said something to the host about the unfairness of favoring the select few. He told me he was going by the list, I was mistaken, then turned his back on me. I swear on my life, he then took the mic, pounced on stage, and sang a third song just since I'd been there. I asked if there were any managers around, and was directed to a piece of paper on a pedestal to the side of the stage (swear) with a complaint number written on it!!! On my way out the door I told him I'd leave a Yelp review for him the following day, and he snidely reminded me that "nobody reads those things". I own a business, and the fact that this 20-something year old preening fluff-ball has a position of authority or responsibility over any business is astonishing to me. I'll copy and paste this review, and email a copy to the owner; but oh well, nobody reads these things. Epilogue: Turns out the owner has a disclaimer on their website about Yelp reviews stating she doesn't respond to them because she believes Yelp especially encourages bad reviews. This is certainly not true for me. I rarely leave reviews at all, unless something is so good or so bad I'm stirred from my usual resigned apathy. I was last night! I used to love this place. The crowd and ambiance is great and the bartender, Lexi, is the sweetest! But ever since Wolf left and this new girl came as the MC came I can't go anymore. Tonight me and my friend went to sing and have a good time and we overheard her telling another customer how bad we are and then took the microphone and began to sing herself. I didn't know this was X factor with expert judges. She also moved us down on the list so she can sing herself. She would also mute our mics during our songs. Like I'm no Kelly Clarkson but come on man don't be mean. Her making the comments is on the video recording we took of ourselves and has now ruined my confidence. Such a bad attitude. This is a real "throw back" shot and beer bar that seems warped in time. Located in Santa Monica, the place is in real need of a makeover or at least a coat of paint and maybe new flooring, but it has a following never the less! There is no food, but you can bring some with you and our party had the whole space for a debate watch party tonight. Like I said the place is kind of crumbling, but the price is right for drinks and they do have Karaoke too. While I was there for the debate watch, it seems to have a good vibe and feel if you like to sing and throw down a few. Definitely a place you want to go with a bunch of friends. A cute, DIVEY bar, specializing in karaoke nights on every night. Plus free popcorn. Drinks are decently priced. Friendly bartenders. Many nights the karaoke is kinda a free-for-all. Most of the patrons are self-monitoring the order, etc. The space is kinda small. Some might feel claustrophobic on those L.A. weekend nights as Gaslite reaches max capacity. Would come here again on occasion to palliate my karaoke cravings. read more
