My friend Conrad likes to play pool. I like to explore different places. So we comprise and go to new bars (and other joints) that have pool tables. That is how we ended up here, and I am grateful for the experience. Before he and I went to Banter bar, he and I went to another bar. We were told that we could play pool, for Wednesday nights in Culver City belonged to pool players that belonged to leagues. I asked the person who gave me this information where we could go that was near, after he visibly consulted his thoughts, he offered Banter Bar. So off we went trusting the direction of this stranger, with a pool stick in hand. Conrad and I found street parking, right across the bar, but as we approached a sign informed us that the bar has parking in the rear. [[HIGHLIGHT]]As soon as I entered I knew that this bar had personality, a personality that I wanted to be around in.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We entered and immedetiary we were greeted by a snack bar. Please do not imagine a Sizzler salad bar with snacks, but imagine about 12 bags of different snacks-- like Peanut M&Ms, Wasabi Peanuts (that I avoided), Salt and Vinegar Peanuts (that I indulged in) and a plastic pumpkin filled with fun sized candies, like Hershey and Mr. GoodBar. There were also trays full of chips, pretzels and other assorted goodies, including popcorn, of course. I shared with Conrad how I felt about the spread; how I had never seen something like this, and how the selection was varied, and how smart it was to have such a selection for those enjoying beer and cocktails. I think I gushed a bit. Then I felt the gaze of another bar-goer. I turned to him, and I asked why are you smiling? I assumed that he was amused, at my loud positivity, but, I quickly found out that he was being delighted by it. For you see, he was the person responsible for the snacks. His name was Jimmy Snacks. I asked him why do you do this? And he said because I can. I am assuming part of his reality, but I hope when I retire, I find a bar or place that can be a home that I contribute to with splendor and joy. I am also glad that my sincere reaction communicated to Jimmy Snacks sincere appreciation, not like I just saw the snacks and thought free! [[HIGHLIGHT]]The bar had two pool tables and it also had a lot of regulars. As Conrad and I sat and enjoyed bowls of snacks, we got to see regulars play pool. There was a culture already in place, revolving around he tables, that we did not belong too.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] If we wanted to play pool we would have to wait awhile. Conrad did not want too. Most bars with pool tables have regulars that kind-of understand the steps of securing a pool table with more ease than a non-regular. To get a pool table, Conrad and I will go earlier next time, in that manner we slide in before the bustle happens. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The night we went on was Karaoke night. The melodies did not define the night. The bar was spacious enough for different pockets of fun to happen. The Kaaoke was a special fixture of the night, not the dominating one.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] So non-karaoke fans can go and do their own things, while the warblers can fill their heart desires. For instance, one guy sang a song that I did not recognize- it was slow and soulful. He sang it well, and I enjoyed it because he did good, not because the song was a Taylor-level hit. It was also nice to hear good singers, and not just singers who butcher a hymn for fun. [[HIGHLIGHT]]One of the things that I appreciated immensely about this bar, is that it did not just have sports on their tv's. On this particular night they had an episode of Modern Family, a show that I have consumed and loved! I felt like the bar got me. Sure, it had the other regular things showing on television but it also had something showing for the rest of us.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The bar had plenty of liquor, and a lot to make it feel like a place with good vibes. including a neon hot-pink sign that read Good Vibes. The sign had a pink heart as well, not instead of the dot above the I but as a standalone figure in the sign.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I appreciated that in sum the bar has a little something for everyone, and it feels like a spot to grab drinks and relax because you do not have to fear bar brawls or fights.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I also saw someone sitting in a couch that was well into her Golden Years. If she belongs in this bar, then anyone belongs in the bar. Why? She has earned the wisdom to chose what is great and what is not.

Truly a hidden gem ! Emily makes THE BEST espresso martinis in town!! Absolutely delicious Plus the service is unforgettable. I initially ordered the peach margarita but it wasn't quite frozen enough yet (although still delicious), and they let me know that and gave me a sample to ask if I was okay with the consistency or if I wanted to wait 10 minutes until it froze more. This was so hospitable and considerate! Most bars would just give you what they have but not Banter! [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambience here is warm and inviting.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's also so much fun watching the amazing band Kiki and The Biscuits perform![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Kiki also hosts karaoke here on Wednesdays and Sundays and she always puts on an incredible show! Her voice is epic!!![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]If you want great drinks and great times, pop into this cozy West LA gem[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

A fun local bar with Karaoke on Weds nights. They have reasonably priced drinks, strong pour, pool tables, and a digital juke box. Some "regulars" get annoyed if you change the music to something current and of a different genre, but oh well, it's there for everyone! Haha. My FAVORITE part of Banter on Weds or sometimes Thursday nights is the pop-up food tent in the back! PizzaKen is SO good and often has specials that are related to Puerto Rican or Brazilian faves. It's great to have a local spot with good drinks and great food!

I came in at 1:30am on a Sunday night because I was drawn by the Karaoke I was hearing. I tried to put my name down on the list but unfortunately it was all full. Luckily, they had a "juke box" which was all digitalized and cost 2 credits per song. $5 for 15 credit. Thankfully there was credit on the machine and I was able to have my own karaoke session and was the last to leave. I promised the closing guy if I could finish my favorite song "U don't have to call" that I would give him a review. Thank you for not verbally kicking us out and just pacing around, Sir! I had a very memorable, spontaneous night. Lastly, bring quarters to play pool. It's 1 quarter per play.

Came here on a Saturday to celebrate my husband's birthday and our group had a great time. The owner (I think her name is Emily) makes delicious cocktails. I came ahead of time to drop off a cake and they were happy to accommodate. There's a lovely patron offering free snacks at the bar. There was a live band that we really liked too. Ample seating and pool table kept the group happy for hours.

It's my first time at this bar when I first walked in everybody was hanging out, the bartender was very nice It was a male, and then they switched bartenders and a female bartender walked in, and she has not greeted me not once she has not made any eye contact with me, but she's talking to everyone else And sometimes that can make you feel uncomfortable When it's your first time somewhere and you cannot have a job like this if you're that kind of person you need to be open-minded and friendly and she seems to be a little shady. Great place in Culver City to water your hole or play pool. Drinks are a little pricey for a dive bar but hey inflation is real. Don't forget to tip your bartender. House rules as far as pool goes you keep playing til you lose. Underground rules.

Bartenders define a bar. I believe that the best in Culver City is Em. She is personal. Everyone matters to her. Wiskey sour easy..... or whatever you can request willing. came here for the first time with some friends. the snack bar was fully stocked right by the entrance (shoutout jimmy snacks!!) we got there around maybe 9 and there was plenty of room to take a seat. i wanted to see if we had a chance to play pool but there were already some games going on and i didn't want to interrupt their flow, so i just spent the night watching and that was entertaining. there was also a dj spinning that night, im not sure if that is a weekends-only thing. bartenders have a heavy pour! i didn't feel ignored/neglected by the bartenders, even toward the end of the night when a crowd started forming. [[HIGHLIGHT]]bathroom was nice and clean, which i did appreciate.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] there is plenty of street parking right outside & a parking lot in the back if you need it. overall had a great time :) read more

Great dive bar and vibe, and great place to watch the World Cup. However, they do not serve food. They offer a large selection of packaged snacks that is good but not the same as real food, even if a small bar menu. Still, a very fun time can be had. read more

Stopped in because I was in the area and wanted to try out a new bar on the divey-side. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There seemed to be a lot of regulars/locals but I was completely at ease for a first timer going solo.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service from Farah was friendly and attentive. She mentioned the bar is woman owned so that added to the comfort level. Wine by the glass was reasonable at $8. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was a little loud at times from the lively pool table action but to be expected.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I didn't realize until reading other reviews that there is a great curated selection of free snacks by the door (what a concept!). They have a parking lot but street parking is also available. First time here was a good one. read more

I was looking for a low-key, laid-back bar where a group of friends could meet-up and catch up. Banter was the perfect place with a local neighborhood vibe. It had a great buzz between the pool tables,and the games on the TV, yet it was never too loud for our banter and chit-chat. As a bourbon drinker, I was not only impressed with their selection of bottles behind the bar- but they were quick to serve them up in a Glencairn- so you know they are serious about their whiskey program. Had a great conversation with Emily, the owner and mixologist behind the bar. I was also a fan of the free snacks at the end of the bar. I'll be back again next time I'm in town! read more

Me senté en la barra para tomarme una cerveza y ver que tal estaba el bar de mi vecindario, pero me topé con gente muy borracha y de pocos modales. Hubo dos personas que se me acercaron y ya no podían pararse por si mismos y tiraban cerveza, no tenían nadie quien pusiera orden y tampoco checara la mayoría de edad. Vi algunos reviews que estaba muy bien el lugar pero la verdad esta muy desactualizado, servicio decente pero el ambiente muy desastroso. No volvería y tampoco lo recomendaría read more

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Small, quaint sports bar. Cool vibe.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] No kitchen but a lot of restaurants nearby and they allow you to bring your own food. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Good amount of TVs.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Gail was cool. Drinks were okay but nothing crazy. read more

Love this place. Went here with two friends this past week and had a great time. Pool tables are nice and the music selection is fun (customers can use a jukebox system). Service is fast and easy, we started a tab and just kept getting more as we were having so much fun. Highly recommended, will be back! read more

I was introduced to this bar by a friend and loved it from the get-go. The owner Emily is bad ass and really brought life into this bar after taking ownership. The drinks are cheap, the vibes are good, and they have karaoke on Wednesday and Sunday nights at 9. Kiki who runs the karaoke is also awesome and makes the experience fun. They also have pool tables and snacks out at the bar. I love dive bars and this is a great one. Every time I go I see familiar faces as they have a lot of regulars. Highly recommended! read more

This is a great hidden gem nicest bartenders everyone here is super mellow. It's a nice crowd and you could play pool watch the games and as well bring your own food. You have the best of both worlds here with a fun bar and eating whatever you like to bring to eat. read more

I currently host Karaoke here on Sundays & Wednesdays, and this one of my favorite places to host. The place is newly revamped and has nice clean bathrooms. Emily the owner is the only female bar owner in LA, which is a crazy fact. Her, Gail, & Mette make the best fancy cocktails with all sorts of fresh fruits and herbs. My patrons who come here are always happy with the prices compared to other bars. I understand that staff can be busy, and I wasn't expecting immediate service. However, a simple, "I'll be with you shortly," or even a quick acknowledgment would have been appreciated. Instead, I was completely ignored. Thinking perhaps the bartender was only responsible for preparing drinks and not taking orders, I got up and went to the hostess stand. The host was kind, promptly seated me, and was seated in a booth. Moments later, I watched two Caucasian women sit down at the bar. They were immediately greeted, given menus, and attended to without delay. Seeing that stark difference in how we were treated was incredibly disappointing. At that point, I no longer felt welcome. I felt embarrassed, overlooked, and, unfortunately, discriminated against. Rather than continue waiting in an environment where I didn't feel valued, I chose to leave. I believe every guest deserves to be acknowledged and treated with the same courtesy and respect, regardless of their race. As an African American woman, it was difficult not to notice the contrast between how I was treated and how the next guests were welcomed. I chose to spend my money elsewhere, where I felt my business would be appreciated. I sincerely hope management takes the time to address this, because every customer deserves fair and respectful service. I will never in my life spend money at this location again.

Our very friendly server sat us on the large wraparound patio and after my explaining my celiac issues and getting some guidance on their incredible menu, we shared the following after my friend ordered a delicious Sangria while knowing as a lightweight and cheap date I would be having 6 cocktails later, I ordered the Ta Ta Tatiana- Watermelon, ginger, honey, lemon, mint, bitters: Cast iron cornbread, cultured butter, wildflower honey Kusshi oysters, Nantes carrot mignonette Arugula, emerald beauty plum, goat cheese, spiced pecans, aged balsamic Hokkaido scallops, brown butter-bacon vinaigrette, mustard greens The oysters came out first and had a delightful and unusual carrot mignonette. Small and not like Louisiana Gulf Oysters, they were fresh and delicious. Next came the Arugula salad that was tart and tasty as well as a generous portion. The cast iron cornbread was ridiculously so good I joked that I would just order two of them next time. This joint actually makes their cornbread without flour which is sadly rare for me so not only was this a gluten free treat, it was light and just melted in blissful corn flavor. It was the single best bite I have had in years. I am in love All is good in the world with this cornbread Tomato Caesar. Our meal took a dip here after three unbelievably fantastic dishes. Were they fine. Yes. The toppings were so strong. I really couldn't taste tomato. While these look great, I'd say skip this dish. Order the green salad instead Next the steak : at $149. I was hoping for greatness. It mostly was. I took a the middle slice and it was great. Our bone marrow was a bit stingy. Only had enough for two slices. But it definitely enhances the steak! As we ate from the middle out. (Animals I know). It bacame apparent that everything but the middle slice was over cooked (ordered medium rare). This steak was cooked medium. So much so the outer 1/3s are dry. A bit disappointing for $150 steak. The server never solicited feedback on the food as it was served, even when we asked to box up half the steak. As they cleared plates.. we did get a "how was it,". Bit not a real check in as to how our food was The mashed potatoes were perfection. I did add some salt that was served with the steak to them as they were slightly....just slightly under seasoned. But still. These are pretty perfect mashed potatoes. We topped it off with cobbler (peach blackberry). It was great. And a small scoop of $9 ice cream .. cookies and cream. I'd skip this favor. Too much cookie. Not enough cream. Al in all. A really wonderful meal. The steak, even though it wasn't cooked perfectly . Was still delicious. That cornbread does live up to the hype. It is my best bite of the year for sure We have reservations again next week. I'm already looking forward to it!

It made it a little difficult to relax and have a conversation. Service: 3/5 The staff was friendly, but they seemed overwhelmed. The restaurant was packed, and it felt like they accepted more guests than they could comfortably handle. It took quite a while for someone to take our drink order, and the food also took a long time to arrive. Noise Level: Very loud Food: 4/5 The kitchen clearly knows what it's doing, and the food quality is there. That said, it feels like Dunsmoor has reached "hipster hype" status, where the buzz may be a little bigger than the overall experience. I'd definitely go back, though, because there are still several appetizers I'd like to try. What We Ordered: - Chicken Liver - 5/5: Absolutely delicious. The rich chicken liver paired perfectly with their incredible sourdough bread. - Green Chile Stew - 5/5: Outstanding. It was packed with large, tender chunks of pork, and the fresh flour tortillas were amazing. - Trout - 3/5: The biggest disappointment of the meal. While the fish was meaty and cooked well, it lacked flavor and felt very basic. - Famous Cornbread - 4/5: Good, but it didn't quite live up to the hype for me. Final Thoughts: Dunsmoor serves some excellent food, especially the chicken liver and green chile stew, but the overall experience was held back by the long waits and noisy dining room. I can see why it's so popular, but I think some of the excitement is driven by hype. Even so, I'd come back to explore more of the menu.

They're also a good place to hang out with for drinks as well. The menu leans Italian, although you can get some universally cherished breakfast items. And the service is/ was wonderful. I came here right at opening on a Sunday morning and was able to sit right away down at the bar area inside. I was gonna grab breakfast - most likely the pancakes, but I saw that some pasta dishes were available. I ended up ordering the linguine al limone. I'm sure I would have been happy with the pancakes, but so glad I opted for the linguine. The pasta was perfectly cooked and it was a bright and tasty dish with a slight citrus zest. Such a fun dish to eat. Especially in the morning where I was able to enjoy with a nice cappuccino. Definitely a place I would like to come back and enjoy with another person or a small group. I got there pretty much right at opening on the weekend so there was plenty of street parking nearby

This was our first time to this gem of a place, and it did not at all disappoint. Located on the…read moresecond floor, we had no idea what to expect and upon entering, we were introduced to a whole new world. The decor and ambience is absolutely remarkable, so much so that we just had to stare at every detail when walking over to the terrace. Even in the searing summer heat, the terrace offered us a soft, peaceful breeze, so everything felt just right. At the same time, we took advantage of the lovely views of the neighborhood on one side and the beautiful interior of the bar as a centerpiece on the other. Whether having drinks or a meal, this was the perfect setting. Each person on staff was very welcoming and enthusiastic, and they hit the right notes in terms of helping to set the atmosphere. We were recommended the sticky Japanese sweet potato and informed that the skewers would also be delicious and filling. The king salmon skewer and glazed pork belly skewers were indeed amazing. It was obvious that each culinary item was treated with great attention to detail. For me personally, the shoyu, pickled daikon, and rhubarb on the pork belly truly created that perfect bite. Needless to say, I cannot wait for my next trek to the magnificent Checker Hall.

Go To Banter Bar. 5/5 stars , no complaints. My full review below. Banter Bar rules. The ambiance is great. Its in a nice part of town but far enough from a place where you have to see some obnoxious, impossibly rich person. Its got pool players - pool bars rule because people who play pool are generally nice and dont get way too drunk cause they want to still do good at pool. DIGITALLY ACCESSIBLE! THEY HAVE CASHLESS PAYMENT OPTIONS, THEY HAVE A DIGITAL JUKE BOX - YOU WONT LOOK DUMB FOR NOT CARRYING CASH WHICH I HAVENT DONE FOR YEARS. THEY DO ACCEPT CASH THOUGH. (I put this in all caps because it's important) Also, the website is super nice AND YES one time I criticized it in jest and Emily who owns the bar and makes such good drinks remembered that I did and me and it made me feel special. Anyways, also the drinks rule - I only drink cocktails...so...im not going to stay if they aren't delicious, interesting and affordable - which they are. And she has bar snacks ... thought to be abolished after covid this place still has bar snacks! God bless. I could say a lot more but I wont. Place rules. read more

A great find. Reasonable drinks. A relaxed atmosphere of men and women. Owner and barternder Emili keeps an eye to ensure things are working and clients are happy. Kind a shady creepy Ambiance there. Drinks are decently priced I wouldnt go there for no more than a quick drink.
