Brace yourself for a long review haha: Just moved to the area (from Nyack, not far) and was so excited to find out there was a crystal shop near me. My go-to shops are in Nyack. They are amazing, small and humble. The staff makes you feel like family. So I guess my standards are pretty high expecting the staff to be warm, welcome, and helpful. Not the case. I walked in, and was not acknowledged by any of the staff and felt my stomach immediately fall through my butt. The energy and aura in this shop was beyond negative, my intuition was telling me turn around and sprint out of the door. Usually it's the opposite. A shop is where to go to seek out positive energy. Should have listened and turned around ... Since it's a tiny shop and there was only a few people inside I didn't want to look crazy, I made the trip specifically here to find to crystals for my friends as Christmas presents, I figured I'd look around. I'll start out with the fact that majority of the crystals are not labeled at all with their name, and none of them are labeled with metaphysical properties of what they are supposed to do. Never have I ever gone to a crystal shop like that? They have books on display throughout the store, so I gently picked one up without bending or creasing or literally doing anything to this book...... because it's obvious I was looking to get some help. The woman working, the same one that didn't even blink when I walked in told me these are not for reading use in the store and if I want to learn about them I can use the books they already have open. No problem I totally understand, let me see the open, used demo book to learn. Of course they don't have a copy of this one I'm thoroughly enjoying to allow customers to read. So I'm browsing and seeing nothing IIke or am gravitating towards. I like to hold the crystal, feel if it's a right fit and then proceed to buy it. Everything was behind sliding glass doors or in a display case that you couldn't touch. I had two in mind at this point, and the woman began to rudely answer my questions and felt like she was belittling me the entire time. You know when someone's on you after they "help" you to buy something? That's how I felt. I was ready to leave, the crystals were so cheap less than $10 so I said screw it I'll take them leave and never come back. She put the crystals in gift boxes and I asked "do you have the little pieces of paper that say what they are?" She rolled her eyes, sighed and said, "I'll type it up for you now." I'm thinking she's typing the name of the crystal and what metaphysical properties to expect it to bring, etc. I said politely, "don't worry that won't be necessary it's okay!" and the woman was like... it's fine I do it all the time. She walks over to a type-writer .... yes, in 2017 a typewriter (this can go either way. A cool old vintage vibe or Jesus Christ you need to up your technology) and took close to two minutes to type maybe 12 letters of just the crystals name. Nothing about what energies you can expect it to bring. Lastly, I asked how long they've been up and running and they woman was a snot! What do you mean? With the dirtiest look, I said I'm just asking how long you guys have been in business here. The answer was surprising but irrelevant because I would never ever ever ever suggest anyone stepping foot in this negative place. Story kicker: I called my mom and told her what happened and said... mom I can't give these crystals as presents. I would NEVER want to give this energy to someone else. What should I do with them?! She told me to find a waterfall near by, throw them in and make a wish. And I did. I spent $8 to throw two rocks in a waterfall. Save yourself the headache and drive to the palisades mall and go to "glowing candle" next to lord and Taylor and Macy's, or crystal on the rocks in Nyack. Those humans are truly incredible and you will leave feeling amazing. read more

The Gem Mine is an amazing store filled with beautiful and unique pieces and excellent service. They just repaired two of my favorite pieces of jewelry at a very fair price and did an excellent job! My wife and I have shopped at The Gem Mine for years. They have a wonderful selection and the sales staff is very knowledgeable, courteous and helpful. Whether you're looking for something contemporary or an old estate piece, you can't go wrong here. My wife was a committed jewelry junkie who loved signed costume jewelry and often brought favorite pieces in to be restored. They were done perfectly, looking like the day that they were new. Bought a bracelet there a few months prior and it broke so I brought it in to have restrung. Went to pick it up and it was done poorly. She didn't follow my instructions and simply restrung it almost exactly the way it was before just changing the color of the accent beads. I wanted it to be different. Also, the beads were very loose on the stretch nylon with a lot of spacing in between. When I let them know I wasn't happy with it the owner got very nasty and rude, telling me it was impossible to fix. She raised her voice when I questioned her about it and made me feel like an idiot who doesn't understand how jewelry is made.. There were other people in the store and it was embarrassing. She finally agreed to try to redo it but I decided that the vibe in her store was so extremely negative I didn't want my stones there another minute. I paid full price, took the bracelet home, took it apart and restrung it myself. I changed it around and made it tight. Beautiful and no spacing now! I guess I'm not the jewelry idiot she made me out to be. I would skip this place. Bad energy is not what you want when buying gemstones! read more

This is a beautiful store, full of amazing gemstones, unique antiques, and knowledgable staff. This is our go to store for gifts as there are so many unusual finds. I don't know what the other reviewer was talking about, Mary the owner (who has now passed) was a lovely woman, both kind and well informed on her stones. My husband and I were never mistreated based on looks/ fashion sense and we stick out like sore thumbs! Her daughter Thea runs the shop now and she does her mother's memory service. I never walk out of here empty handed and I find their prices to be fair in terms of the gem stone market. You must check out this shop, you won't regret it... And you will likely go back time and again as we do! read more

Snotty, judgmental staff. Don't bother to spend your money there if you can't be treated nicely and fairly in all levels. Plenty of other friendly helpful shops. Poor quality and selection of gem stones and jewelry and overpriced for their offerings. Disorganized. Wouldn't give it even one star but have to in order to write a review. read more

I agree with the previous reviewer. Mary and Thea could not be nicer. the Gem Mine is definitely open and going strong. I was there twice this week, they repaired two items for me, they have plenty of Rocks, Minerals and rhinestones of all sizes as well just to name a few items. Since my last review which was back in 2009, the owner Mary, passed away. Since then i have stopped several times. The staff has been friendly and attentive these times and I was not uncomfortable like i was previously (I avoid the stones though). i read the other review here that basically criticized my experience, rather then discussing what he personally likes about the store. Its fine for some people to disagree with me that there should be some type of sign if they don't want people to touch the stones. I stand firm in my feelings that Mary was very rude to me for an unnecessary reason. I did not deserve to walk out of the store feeling like crap, esp since Id bought several things there before. What i think happened is that she (being an older lady) was put off by my appearance at the time, which was a bit boyish and punk, and i think she judged me on that. Thats how i feel, I could be wrong. If you own a business esp in this area, you need to be polite and courteous to all kinds of people. Im aware of the fact that many people liked Mary and found her very friendly, but that one day she definitely wasn't very nice to me. So, my previous review still stands for me, but I did want to update to note that the current staff is very nice and the store still sells the same wonderful jewelry they always have, so i definitely suggest stopping in. read more

Been there several times -- don't even know if it is still open (3/17/12). However, I've had experience with stones being broken; have lost some nice crystals inside geodes that way. And, I've never been treated badly by anyone at the Gem Mine. I don't know that customers have a "right" to touch things. Since nothing in the store belongs to me, I figure it's my obligation to ask to touch someone else's stuff. Then, if someone asks me not to touch their stuff, and tells me why (whether I believe their explanation or not), I'm obliged to comply. If they get a little shirty with me, it's because they assume I'm an adult and ought to have understood the first time. Bottom line: Gem Mine is (or was) a decent shop, and deserves better review than the only one previously up. read more
