Do NOT stay here. The place looks great in the pictures, but it is not. It is not updated at all. Bathroom and shower are old and uninviting. Small old shower feels unclean as does the whole place. Smells musty and feels unclean over all. Living room rug does not appear to have been vacuumed since the 50's. Neat and nicely decorated, but not clean and fresh feeling. Old, worn, mismatched small towels. Same with the sheets. Was told there is a "day bed" that can be used for a comfortable bed. Not the case at all. It is a cool looking 50's couch (small and uncomfortable). Not in any stretch a "bed". After you book, you get an email telling you not to leave anything in the car or hide it in the trunk if you do and to close the shades and lock the windows anytime you leave. It is not in a safe area. I learned after booking that Desert Hot Spring is not a very safe. But the worst part is the host, Eric. Super weird and downright scary man. He lashed out at us aggressively on the phone when we told him we did not want to stay due to the above reasons and he got so hostile so quickly to the point we fled the place scared that he was on the way over to harm us. Never experienced anything like this before and have stayed at many rentals. Also, after you book you get an email that if you want to use the hot tub, it will cost you another $100 per day. The host is nuts and scary. He makes the place look cool but the reality is it is not clean and smells bad. The host would not refund us. Don't stay here!! read more

My husband and I are from Oceanside, California and we're looking for a reasonably priced getaway near Palm Springs for the weekend. After looking at numerous hotels that seem to be one price but then once you click book they hit you with a ton of extra fees, so we settled up on this quaint little place. And I'm so glad we did!! I couldn't decide if we needed the studio or one-bedroom, after our first stay I would definitely stay in a one bedroom from now on. The studio was roomy enough...but the one-bedrooms are awesome and have a full kitchen and are much more roomy. And not much higher in price. The bed in the studio was a little uncomfortable for our liking but I mentioned it to Eric and it seems that he may try and fix that. The decor and care Eric has taken to fix up this little motel is what really sets it apart from everything else out there! The location of the property is sort of in a less than desirable location but once you are on the property it's really private and you're not really aware of what's around you. We were there to relax by the pool and hang out in Palm Springs and we were able to do those two things just fine! Great property if you and your friends want to get a couple places to have to yourselves. We will definitely go back. read more

This was my old apartment building 14 years ago, and I'm glad to see it still standing and still in the same mid-century style I remember. My unit was #4 and I have beautiful memories of watching the sunset, staring out at the wind turbines and looking down at the desert valley, working at a local resort, discovering The Spring spa right down the road, meeting and hosting my husband for the first time, until I packed up and moved when I was pregnant with my daughter. The Getaway is our favorite place to stay in the desert. The mid century modern vide is beautifully done both outside and in. The rooms are all very comfortable. Over the years we have tried them all. Often it is just my wife and I, but last year we took over most of rooms and the whole family celebrated Thanksgiving with my 96 year old mother who lives in Desert Hot Springs. We stayed for a weekend here at the getaway. The apartments are perfect. The decor is extremely well done with beautiful details. The apartment and common areas were spotless. Eric was staying there the same time we were and was very friendly. He gave us some great recommendations for local events and restaurants. The Getaway is a 20 min drive from Palm Springs (art museum, antiques) and about 40 min from Joshua Tree National Park where we spent one of the days. The other day, we laid by the pool and cooked meals in the sweet and well equipped kitchen. No doubt we'll be back many times. A member of our group tested positive for Coronavirus shortly before our arrival, and along with a majority of the group being in contact with this individual, it was apparent we needed to cancel our reservation to prevent the spread of the virus further within the group or onto the property of The Getaway. The owner Eric showed absolutely no concern for this. Eric's sole interests was to hold onto our money with no services rendered, or have a group who has come into contact with a positive Coronavirus infection onto The Property. We desperately wanted to follow through with our plans when safe, but refuse to do so at this location when theres an abundant lack of hospitality or care for the health of paying guests. I had reserved 5 rooms at The Getaway for a birthday weekend with friends. I paid the entire balance of $1,800 up front upon booking the dates a month out. From beginning to end I had consistently communicated with Eric about the occasion and plans. With California's social distancing restrictions to be fully lifted 2 weeks prior to my reservation, my group and I were excited to finally get back to a normal lifestyle. Unfortunately, as history has already shown, California's restrictions were lifted and then reapplied with the rise in Covid-19 infections and deaths across the state, including Los Angeles and Riverside county (the two counties my group and The Getaway are located). 2 weeks prior to the reservation I added additonal guests at the cost of $840, bringing up my fully paid balance prior to even arriving at The Getaway to a total of almost $3k. 9 days before the reservation, and right after paying almost $1k to add additional guests to the reservation, an individual in the group tested positive for Covid-19 and had been in conctact with the majority of the group, including myself. I immediately informed Eric of this occurrence, explaining we unfortunately would not be able to continue with the reservation in fear of further spreading the virus. I requested a refund due to the circumstances that was out of our control. Eric immediately refused. I attempted to inform Eric of the risks of allowing a group, whos majority had been in contact with a coronavirus infection and that the situation was irrelevant to traditional cancellations outside of a refund policy window. Eric attempted to fix the matter by offering me a 50% credit of $1,320 to be used within 12 months with no refund. $1,320 credit at an independent hotel in the middle of re-rising cases of Coronavirus in its own state and county, along with reinstatements of government social distancing measures. Nobody in their right mind can guess when I would be able to use such a credit, after the states initial projected full "reopening" has been pushed back indefinitely. Add insult to injury, and my group would still be out the 2nd $1,320. I continued to try to inform Eric of the circumstances and pleaded that if he stepped away from being greedy and making a terribly uncontrollable situation worse he would be making the money regardless, if not more, from our business as we still wanted to continue with the plans when it was possible to do so SAFELY. Eric offered an additional offer in response, he would refund the $860 paid for the additional guests added to the reservation, and "an additional refund for the portion of the balance based on other guests booking your cancelled travel dates." As though not offering a full refund, or even a full credit, in response to my group dealing with the infection, and potential infection, of coronavirus wasnt insulting enough; Eric informed me I had to give him an answer by the end of the night a week before the reservation or I could go screw myself because he would cancel the reservation and not give me anything. I am sharing this experience out of concern for anybody who may have an interest in staying at The Getaway to understand that the ownership is only interested in your money. read more

We booked this entire hotel to stay with a group of friends during the Coronavirus pandemic for a getaway with a close group of friends. Well one of the friends tested positive for Covid so we thought it wouldn't be safe to go as other friends were probably exposed as well as most of us had contact with that person. We tried to reach out to the owner to cancel our trip but he did not care and did not offer any sort of reasonable refund even under these extreme circumstances where we are just trying to stop the spread of the virus. I understand if you have a strict refund policy but you should try to be flexible and work with your clients when there is a pandemic going on. We gave the owner about two weeks notice. read more

That being said, I feel like I owe Eric, the host, a 5 star rating & review because I got the 5 star treatment myself. When the flooding started in N. CA, I got in the car and started driving south with my dog. Fortunately, the Getaway had an available unit, which turned out to be perfect--a very comfortable one bedroom apartment. The unit is just as described...mid-century with all the necessary comforts. Although the host doesn't live on the property, he makes a real effort to make sure his guests are comfortable and is within close enough proximity to take care of anything that might require his attention. Had a trip planned with friends. Unfortunately, due to a member of our group contracting Covid, we made the decision to cancel the trip. Our group reached out to the owner and informed him of the situation. The owner's response was very apathetic to the situation and he refused to refund any money. He would rather have the money and have a potential health risk on his hands. Not the type of person anyone would want to do business with. Please be cautious when choosing to do business with this establishment. I know we won't be giving them anymore business in the future. read more

The details are terrific, old magazines, fully stocked kitchen, towels, good bedding. This property is obviously a labor of love for the host, Eric. This place has the worst customer service, I have ever experienced. It looks like the owner or host of this place lives at the location and acts as a pepping Tom. He constantly called our cell complaining about absurd things. Does not let you talk when he calls and threat my family with calling police to throw us out if we did not leave premises, screaming at us over phone that we had no rights on his property! It was a horrible experience. Out reservation was for two nights and we were forced to leave a day before our reservation was up Leaving me and my family stranded. We were looking for a unique spot for a weekend away and this place fit the bill. I booked the whole place for my sisters, the husbands, and the kids. We all had such cute apartments, we oohed and aahed at the charm and nostalgia everywhere we looked. Beds were comfy, there was plenty of towels. Every kitchen was stocked with condiments and spices. Stores were right down the street. The neighborhood was chill with a killer view. We all agreed that the next time we needed a desert escape that this was the place to go! THE COST: At first the cost seemed high because we had the max amount of 15 people, but after looking around the entire Palm Springs area it was one of the most affordable. Be sure to input the right amount of people so you get the accurate price. It was worth it for the following reasons. THE AC + POOL made our stay a breeze in 104 degree August heat! I was really worried about the heat, but it wasn't an issue. We even brought our hairless dog & kept his t-shirt wet & water bowl full & he was happy! BIG ENOUGH INSIDE + OUTSIDE: We reserved the entire complex with our friends + family (9 adults + 6 kids) which made for the ultimate private vacation. We kept the hot tub cool so it acted as the "little pool" to have enough room for us all in the water. THE KITCHENS: Equipped to make our grand breakfasts lunch & dinners which saved us $. It was also an awesome reprieve from covid distancing in restaurants. THE ROOMS were shear joy! It's like we walked into a MadMen apartment. Mid century furniture all the way to mid century melamine dishes for outdoors! Even the accessories, magazines, art, coffee cups were from the 1950's; remember the "View Master" you would look thru & click thru images... they even had one of those in every room! THE NEIGHBORHOOD is a bit desolate, but it's private enough to not see all that & to have fun without worrying you're going to disturb the neighbors. The Getaway was the perfect vacation getaway we needed. It's a bit off the main streets (which wasn't a bother too much to me) felt a little nice being a bit secluded but not too secluded. The neighborhood was quiet and so were the other tenants (although the walls were pretty thin), we booked a 2 night stay for the new years eve weekend. It's a 5 unit hotel apartment and each unit is literally perfect for a comfortable stay because it includes a full kitchen, a bedroom as well as a living room and bathroom. I personally, for the cost, thought everything was pretty great, decor is thought out of too being it mid-century and a bit quirky. There is a pool and pretty large jacuzzi, which we utilized the last night for $65/night (being it NYE we were okay with splurging on the experience and had a great time). It was just me and my boyfriend along with our two small dogs, we took a mini trip to go be out in Joshua tree and it was really such a pleasant stay. I rented #3, the studio, for the weekend with my daughter. It was super clean and has a full kitchen. The decor is excellent - retro, 1970s, designer furniture replicas in combination with modern fabrics and patterns. An eclectic and personal collection of visually interesting magazines and ornaments, combined with interesting wall art. The pool is not heated unless you pay for it and pretty small, but it feels just right in the heat. The hot tub is a whopping $65 extra per day to heat so we did not use it. There are a total of 5 units, 4 of them 1-bedroom, and #2 and 3 can be rented together as a 2-bedroom. The location is chill - at the edge of town, in a residential neighborhood with a smattering of small motels/hotels. There is nothing to speak of within walking distance. read more

I stumbled upon Eric's listing on VRBO and knew this is where my boyfriend (who loves everything modern) and I would enjoy our Palm Springs Labor Day weekend. We were pleasantly surprised at how accurate the description and photos were. A beautiful property with about 5 units, a pool, and hot tub. We met Eric on our first night while we were hanging out at the pool. He popped over and we chatted for a bit. Great conversationalist and very knowledgeable about the area. We didn't get to see everything he recommended but since were only in LA, we'll certainly be back to do so. The room was spacious and perfect for our weekend 'getaway'. Nice sized bathroom, good kitchenette with full size fridge & stove. The space is adequately setup and pretty much a studio apartment. Really clean and bright. I highly recommend this location. The Getaway is such a amazing place to stay. We stayed here on a Friday and Saturday and enjoyed it. The apartments are designed and setup from the 1960's. It is like stepping back in time. The apartments are provided with many extras. A lot of cooking utensils, pots, pans. They also have a music player, WiFi, and television in both rooms with Netflix and many other channels.
