I am so impressed by Gilded Lily and specifically my stylist Dani! I found her on instagram (@danihairchicago) and I'm so glad I did. She has hundreds of photos of her work and I felt extremely confident that she'd be able to achieve what I needed (especially after not having my hair professionally done in several months, I knew my hair needed some work) I appreciate how she was transparent in pricing and what steps to take to get my hair healthy and beautiful. The salon's ambience is peaceful, immaculately clean, and the staff was super kind and warm. My original appointment was a color correction and trim (starting from my super damaged/yellow/at-home bleached hair) and completely transformed into soft, natural toned blonde. I went back around 6 weeks later for a toner/gloss and the difference in my hair's color, dimension, and overall health is unbelievable, I am so grateful. I have been using the shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in for almost two months now and I can honestly say they make a HUGE difference! This weekend, I took a trip to New Orleans to propose to my now-fiancé, and, knowing that my friend was going to take photos of the proposal that would last a lifetime, I decided that instead of touching up my faded all-over purple myself, I would shell out to go to a proper salon for a double process and haircut. After reading several Yelp reviews for salons in the area, I chose the Gilded Lily and booked an appointment with Tonya. I've had "fashion" colors (purple, blue, pink, etc.) in my hair continuously for about five years now. Most of the time I've bleached and dyed it myself, but I have gotten it done at salons before, too. In my experience, a double-process takes about four hours. I arrived at the salon for my 10am appointment and talked Tonya through what I wanted done, including showing her photos of the color my hair had started as that I wanted to get it back to (a bright magenta-y purple). She told me that we wouldn't be able to get my hair to such a "vibrant" color, but that we could get close. She then went and got Dani to "make a game plan" for how they would achieve the color and cut I wanted. Tonya proceeded to bleach and foil my hair. Two o'clock came and went. I still had foil all over my head, and Tonya was still working on it. I asked for an ETA; I had to be back at my apartment by 6pm to pack and leave for my 9pm flight (a timetable I never DREAMED would conflict with a 10am hair appointment). Tonya told me that if "everything goes well," it would be another two hours. Tonya applied another layer of bleach directly onto my scalp, which seemed odd, as I've always read that bleach should be kept at least a quarter inch away from the scalp to keep from damaging it. At one point I explained about the flight and said I need to be out by 5pm at the absolute latest. She suggested just doing the color and coming back for the haircut later, but I pushed back, as my bangs had grown out to where they reached my eyes, and again, I was getting engaged the next day. Tonya suggested doing a lighter lavender/lilac color instead of a darker color to save time. I love the color lavender, so I agreed. Finally, around 3pm, when the foil finally came off and Tonya was rinsing my hair, she mentioned to Dani that I was in a time crunch. Dani went into action mode and helped Tonya with applying toner, so I had two people working on me at once. Things really blew up when I got back into the stylists' chair and Tonya started blow drying my hair. As it dried it became very clear to me that the color I pictured and the color my hair was becoming were two very different colors. My hair was now grey, not purple at all, and, much to my own embarrassment, I started crying. The salon immediately cleared of stylists, including Tonya. Dani came out and talked to me and was very calming and sweet and reassured me that we could fix this. She called out another stylist (not Tonya) and the two of them tag-teamed applying a second layer of dye to get it to a more vibrant blue-purple. We decided to forego the haircut for the sake of time and just stick to a bang trim. It still wasn't the bright color I was hoping for, but it was vastly improved over the previous grey. When it was FINALLY time for me to pay and leave around 5:30pm, I asked Dani if this was a typical appointment length and expressed frustration that I was not informed that I would be in so long. She gave me a vague answer about how hair color appointments vary a lot in length, etc. She also informed me that although the initial quote I was given, both over the phone and in person, was $250 base price, with potential for that to increase depending on how much product they used, the service they had actually given me was a color correction, which they charge hourly for, and although the appointment should have cost $600, they were only going to charge me $300 since they hadn't told me that. Gee, thanks. The initial quote also included the haircut, but I guess they didn't bother deducting that service even though I did not receive it. At this point, I was so desperate to get out of there that I just swiped my card and fled. Upon arriving home, I noticed that the back of my T-shirt had been bleached. My scalp is also covered in dry, itchy bumps, which I have to assume are the result of having bleach in my hair for something like four hours (every bleach I've ever used has said not to leave it in for more than an hour, ever) and that bleach was applied directly to my scalp. My scalp has never reacted to bleach like this before, and I'm aggressively deep conditioning to try to relieve the itching and get it back to normal. Honestly, I'm both baffled and enraged that I somehow spent SEVEN AND A HALF HOURS in a salon and dropped $300 to get an okay color, a fucked-up scalp, a ruined shirt, and no goddamn haircut. This is unacceptable, and I will not be returning to this salon. read more

Mallory always takes her time on me, making me feel comfortable and relaxed. I especially felt comfortable with the safety precautions they're taking as a salon. I was apprehensive to get my hair cut during a pandemic but their safety reminders on instagram and through email made me feel reassured. After scouring for hair salons in Chicago for a week, I finally decided to book an appointment/consultation with Genesys because of the wonderful reviews and was not disappointed. After getting a balayage from another stylist and hating it, I went to Genesys and she worked a miracle, literally. No one has ever gotten my hair the way I want it until her. I get so many compliments on my new hair all the time. Meanwhile, at the salon, I was very well taken care of and very comfortable. Genesys is very knowledgeable and friendly, she took the time to explain the color process on my dark hair for the ash blonde balayage I wanted and the damage it could possibly do. She also explained the shampoos that could help and little did I know, washing my hair every day isn't good for me! It was well worth the six hours in a chair to finally have my hair the way I want it! read more

Beet Salon in the city! Excellent prices and great staff. Mallory S did my cut and color, let me tell you; everyone I know asked where I got my hair done. I got 12 inches off and donated to locks of love, they made it so easy to do; even taking pics for me for Facebook! Mallory is so professional, fun to talk to and gives great advice. This salon is without a doubt the best one I've been to in all the different cities and countries I've lived in. Mallory, the owner, is a genius in her approach to hair and that level of knowledge and perfectionism has permeated the salon's culture and output. I first went to Mallory after my old stylist of 5+ years unnecessarily bleached my hair to the point of it snapping off. Once Mallory got her hands on it, she did in one sitting what would've taken anybody else several tries. Not only did she make it look amazing, it was somehow healthier than when I walked in. I literally wanted a tiny trim today meaning a quarter of an inch trim because I gave myself a self trim last night and Tonya talked to me, asked me for pictures and said my hair is a completely different texture . She said I should at least wait three or four months simply to dust my layers and she suggested I style my hair instead. She used a special healing shampoo for damaged dry hair but honestly my hair by nature is dry, frizzy and wavy but most definitely NOT DAMAGED! She used a smoothing conditioner that literally stripped the body from my hair then she showed me hideous pictures of women with shags old school shapes with spiral curls. She took all my hair and proceeded to give me the style that i told her i most definitely disliked! I left feeling ugly and not listened to. I was offered water and fake condescending smiles but the wild, loose, thick mane I had hoped for was not what I received. She said I had way too many layers in the front so there were no other styling options. If she had simply taken a half or quarter inch from my back to catch up with the front I may have left somewhat happy but the greasy products they used were definitely not to my liking and I didn't like the stiff, unnatural curls she gave me. I literally went to dill pickle in Logan square to use their bathroom so I could wet my hair down. My hair is flat absolutely flat. I definitely don't recommend this salon for any individual with natural wave or curl in their hair because all the stylists here have stick straight hair. I had to write this review because I absolutely left depressed and not very attractive. I am sure they know how to style straight hair just not individuals with course, frizzy hair. Oh one more thing I'd love to add here. When I showed photos of the character Carrie Bradshaw formerly of Sex in the City Tonya insisted it was never a possibility for me to have a style like hers and that I should consider wearing wigs instead. I'm astonished this salon had such high reviews because the skillset here is strongly lacking. read more

I followed Dani over from Mane. She does an excellent job blending my tinsel with my blonde so I don't have obnoxious outgrowth. I absolutely LOVE this place... I have been going there since it opened and have had positive experience after positive experience! The atmosphere is open and fresh, with big windows flooding the room with light. I am always greeted with a smile and offered a beverage (cappuccino, yes, please). I get my hair done by Mal, the salon owner. Not only is she a great conversationalist and adorable human, she is a superb stylist. She is no novice, she knows what will work with my hair type and gives me tips to keep it looking healthy. I love how my hair looks when I walk out with a new cut, and I love how it continues to look growing out between appointments! Mal does a fabulous job with color, too. I am a low maintenance gal and the color treatments I have gotten have been spot on. I found Dani about a year and a half ago after falling down a random Instagram hair inspo search rabbit hole. Not long after, my long time (20-ish years) hair stylist did an incredibly horrible job on my cut (the color wasn't great either)... and I knew it was probably time to branch out and start seeing someone new. Dani was the first person I thought of! I was nervous about seeing someone new after so long but after my first consultation with her, I knew it was the right decision. She was at a different salon then and I saw her a couple times before she moved to The Gilded Lily. There was no doubt in my head that I was going to follow her. It's been just under a year since i started going to her and it's still an ongoing process (that's how bad the previous cut was!) but she's been so patient and insightful on helping me reach my hair goals. The space at The Gilded Lily is lovely, the owner Mallory and the other employees are so nice, they use cruelty free products - LOVE Kevin Murphy! - and the salon is conveniently located steps away from the Logan Square L stop (parking is pretty good too for people like me who drive in from the suburbs!). Bonus perk is getting to watch all the neighborhood dogs walk by the huge windows while your color is processing! :) read more

Out of many of the salons I've been to in the area, the gilded lily takes the cake! Not only is the staff full of hospitality, the environment is spacious and comfortable. I love the plants that occupy the salon; the chairs are extremely comfortable; and the wash sinks are incredible! The products work well and smell so good. When I arrived, I was greeted with friendly faces and was also offered complimentary beverages. Tonya took such good care of me, my hair and I are utterly grateful in the way we were taken care of.
