A few weeks ago I was back in the nutmeg and when I realized I was in the area, I made it a point to check this shop out once again. Strange enough, I now live in Los Angeles so I frequent the SoCal locations when I can and was stoked to see what this one had to offer. This shop has some arcade machines in the front, a very solid movie selection, retro toys for sale, and of course, a bunch of retro video games, accessories, and consoles to pick up if thats what you need. My current "looking for" list is pretty much just Gamecube games and Criterion Blu Rays, so I was super stoked to stumble across a copy of The Graduate when I didn't see any Gamecube games I was looking for. Like all retro stores, prices here can vary and can sometimes be good and sometimes be bad, things were pretty reasonably prices on this trip and I left a happy camper. Overall, Retro Games Plus is one of the better game stores in Connecticut and thanks to Game Exchange becoming a slop factory, definitely the best in this area. The staff here is knowledgable, the selection is great, and even if you can't find a game, you are sure to find something else when you stop by.

They also sell shirts mimicking nostalgia. They even have arcades that are blast from the past that patrons come to play classic games on. Arthur is a good guy. They may not have many video games from some video game consoles to sell but they have everything. They do have cool GameCube controllers here. Movies are really pricey though. They don't have too many kids films but those shelves are filled with mainly feature films for everyone of all ages. I like Retro Junk in Manchester better just because they have some really cool stuff that I think are eye appealing and are fun to browse there plus DVDs are somewhat cheaper there.

He is very knowledgable of all things current in the comic world, knows people in the industry, has artist appearances to sign books and will happily talk to you about any comic related issue you may have. He will happily set up your pull list with discount prices for doing so. The very large inventory of current and near current books, both majors and independents, are neatly bagged and boarded on shelves. You can frequently find the last ten issues of any story available on the shelf for their cover price. While there are not boxes and boxes of back issues in the store, they will always happily track down any issue(s) you need to acquire. The store also has a good selection of "kids" comics for the young readers. Additionally, Alterniverse has a large supply of all the card games, Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon: decks, boosters and singles. And what comic store would be complete without the action figures and "higher end" collectables that are nicely displayed. The store has moved across the street from its former home and is very spacious. I am actually surprised not to see more comments here, as the store is invariably full of people all the time. There is a constant schedule of MAgic and Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments going all week. Frankly, I love this store and only wish I lived closer to it. It is the only place you should go if you are looking for comics in upstate NY.

Tried to charge me 17 dollars for 4 defenders comics that were in horrible condition. They can be found in a dollar bin in better condition. You can't ask anyone for help because they have no idea where anything is. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your time. They also seem to only care about the people buying their scalped Pokémon cards.

Why, they even have an adult section which is also very interesting. (Why hello, Bettie Page, how I've missed you. The only fault I can find with the store is that it is kind of small, and its shelving layout makes for a labyrinth of comics and kitsch. However, I suppose for some this is part of this shop's appeal.

I stopped in around 5:00 on a Monday afternoon and was the only customer in the store. The man behind the counter did not greet me or offer any assistance. That wouldn't have bothered me much on its own, but things got considerably worse when I started looking through the back issues. As I was browsing, he sharply told me to be careful not to bend the comics. I understood his concern--the bins were extremely overpacked--and I politely told him that I would be careful, even though I already was being careful. But he wouldn't let it go. He continued telling me how I should be looking through the comics and repeatedly insisted that I was doing it incorrectly. After more than 35 years of buying and collecting comics, I know how to handle a back issue. I certainly don't need to be repeatedly lectured on how to flip through a comic bin. The entire interaction felt condescending and unnecessarily hostile, and I was made to feel as though I was doing something wrong simply by browsing the merchandise. Needless to say, I will never go back to Alternative Universe. There are too many comic shops where customers are actually made to feel welcome for me to spend my money somewhere that treats a customer this way. A truly disappointing experience.
