LOCAL NICHE BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT…read more After our daughter, Piper, had so much fun at a class here, I had to learn more about this niche business and the people that make it what it is. I believe in the arts and the benefits of creativity and expression in our society, so it was a pleasure meeting with Molly Shortridge and Justin Clauser of The Perfect 5th Musical Arts Center recently for a tour and some insight into their business. Here's some of my conversation with these two important Central PA musical educators... 1. Founding year? 2011 2. Founder Full name? Eric Wirsing (Guitarist for Solar Federation) 3. Current Owners Full Names? Molly Shortridge (Flutist) and Justin Clauser (Guitarist) 4. Something people might not know about what you do/a common misconception? In addition to music instruction, we offer private and group classes in art and acting. In the Summer, we have camps for music, art, and acting such as Musical Theater, Painting, Drawing, Guitar, Rock Bands, and even specialized camps for young children. 5. Anything you think people might want to know or find interesting? We have highly trained instructors in their field who are also performing musicians. We have teachers from Julliard, Indiana University, Columbia College, Berklee College of Music, Temple University, and many other quality institutions. You can also find our teachers in bands and ensembles such as Into The Spin, Breaking Benjamin, Colebrook Road, Good in the Dark, That Girl,, The Keating Jazz Orchestra, U.S. Army Field bands, The Maryland Symphony Orchestra, Trinity Chamber Orchestra, and Canaan's Land. To find out more, please visit our website at ThePerfect5th.com to read biography's of each of our instructors. We are always interested in designing classes specific to what our community wants. If you have an idea for a small group of people we would love to make it for you. We currently work with the Girl Scouts to help them earn their art badges and would love to team up with more local organizations. 6. Your favorite part about the business? Our favorite part of The Perfect 5th is the sense of community. It is not just a place for musicians, artists, and actors to learn, but a place for us to gather and collaborate. Many local bands have formed out of students that met here and many students have been inspired to become professional artists and musicians. We have prepared students for colleges, conservatories, musicals, acting jobs, working as session musicians, and even for performing in the Marine Band. 7. What's your message or mission? We strive to encourage, nurture, and teach students of all ages and abilities, adapting lessons to individual needs. We hope to enhance lives with the joy of learning an art that lasts a lifetime. We also encourage our students to become members of the community who contribute their personal art and talent to others in ways that are meaningful and promote goodwill. Find them everywhere!... The staff was absolutely incredible and took care of everything. It was wonderful to be able to relax and enjoy my daughters birthday without the stress. They really made her feel special, and her little party guests couldn't get over how great the facility was. We love our classes, and we often have a choice between two or three times in any given week (the class times change by season), and there's always at least one in the evenings, and one during the day, so there's plenty of variety. There is a one-time membership fee, but it's good for life per household (so I paid it once for my daughter, and it's good for my son and any subsequent children). Classes come out to about $70ish per month for one weekly class, and one "practice and play" (which is essentially open gym time with no structured class). There is no drop in rate, which helps keep classes consistent. If you have to miss a class because of sickness or a schedule conflict they give you a make-up class in your online account that you can schedule at your leisure. I tell everyone I know about My Gym and how much we love it there. The staff is wonderful, the facility is clean, and my kids love going!

Clean and a decent functional area HOWEVER they refuse to fix the air bikes (I've been asking for…read moremonths), they don't let you use dumbbells in the functional area (anyone else do devils presses or dumbbell cleans/snatches?). Just a bunch of really dumb rules. Shoes... really? Most people do deadlifts in socks because that's what's SAFE. Deadlifting in shoes is a great way to pull the old back. Yeah, I get you don't want people walking around in socks but to perform a movement in one place is perfectly reasonable. Please fix your bikes. Some of us are limited in what cardio equipment we can use. Also, look into a new leg press and adductor/abductor machines. They don't give full range. The leg press forces sheer force on the knees that's super painful. It's pretty much unusable if you have any OA in your knees.

The staff at the Carlisle YMCA childcare center lacks many things.. They are all young volunteers…read moreor young "teachers" who have no children of their own to offer real life experience. Communication amongst the center is terrible. Everyone will say how wonderful your child is & then the director will send you a nasty message bringing something to your attention you weren't even aware of.. save your time & money. Unless you want your child to be thrown on the playground with children of all ages ranging from 1-5 years old for most of the day with their expectation of them all acting right... They are good at throwing parties for the kids but god forbid a 1 year old doesn't know how to properly regulate their emotions or have better impulse control they'll start making accusations that your kid has a developmental problem... not to mention, after having our son evaluated by his doctor he was certain the daycare was the issue & insinuated they were not equipped to handle children's normal developmental behaviors. Most importantly, the fact that the directors daughter was starting in our sons class was the prime reason he was kicked out after being given SEVEN days to turn his behavior around, A ONE YEAR OLD. The situation is laughable, since it's clear they don't know how to handle the children at their center. While they only had 3 students in his classroom, the new center we recently switched to has 16 & they truly know how to handle each and every one of them all at the same time!

I was with a friend and my baby to pick up a finished project and start a new one. We were told to join the waitlist, then informed the open tables were being held 15 minutes each for people ahead of us, resulting in an estimated 45-60 minute wait despite several vacant tables. When I questioned this nonsense , the employee repeatedly cited "store policy" and became argumentative, even asking why I was "coming at her." When our table was ready about 20 minutes later, I approached her to clear the air and apologized for any misunderstanding. Instead, she berated me, insisted I had been rude, and claimed "everyone agreed with her." My apology was not an invitation to argue more but she was unable to understand that. The manager then told me not to discuss the incident at my own table, and threatened to make us leave if I continued talking. When we decided to leave instead, the manager smugly said corporate "won't do anything" and twice told me to use her name in my complaint, complete with an eye roll. Insolent and disrespectful teenagers running the place. We won't give them business anymore.
