We had taken my wife's engagement ring and diamond ring wrap to multiple big-name jewelers in Atlanta and North Georgia. One jeweler had replaced the "prongs" but within a week one prong fell away and she fortunately caught her diamond as it fell into a restaurant bathroom sink while washing her hands. The Jeweler told us it was not his fault and that the ring should not have been worn while washing her hands. She carried the rings in a small envelope inside her purse for several months, and one day we were up on the Square in Dahlonega and happened to see the sign for the Gold Shop and decided maybe a small family jeweler would do a better job than a big chain. Walking in will give you doubts, as you walk in the front door and there are multiple open businesses in the same building. You turn to your left and enter a doorway and you will be at the Gold Shop. Once inside we were greeted cheerfully and they looked at the ring for us under a microscope. They told us they can fix it and would have to add some gold to repair the prongs but would reset the diamond and asked if we could return in a week to pick it up. Wow, it took weeks to months at the big boys. They inspected the diamond and gave us a written copy of their report and any marks, or blemishes they saw after showing them to us. When we picked it up they repeated this process to inspect the diamond to show us they had not switched our 40-year-old diamond for a piece of custom jewelry. We paid a fourth of the price to have the ring repaired right as we had spent at other jewelers. They earned and won our continuing business in 2016, and we feel very lucky to have found an honest, independent jeweler who holds themselves to high levels of professionalism and integrity. They have done several other repairs on items for us over the years as well as done cleanings and inspections and we have not had a bad experience with them. read more

I came to this little gold shop hoping to have my engagement ring turned into a pendant. My husband gave me the ring 11 years ago, and I haven't been able to wear it for 9. I tried to have it sized early on, but the people I took it to quoted me an exorbitant price, saying it would have to be reshanked (meaning they would have to put a new band on it). So, I gave it up as a lost cause. I visited the shop recently hoping maybe they could turn my ring into a pendant. When I took it in, the lady behind the counter said, "Have you considered having it resized?" I told her my woes, that reshanking was WAY to expensive, and I couldn't afford it. She told me that having it resized would actually be a lot more affordable than having it turned into something else and the shape of the setting wouldn't be very compatible anyway. So, I spoke with the owner, and she quoted me an amazing price to reshank the ring. I had it a week later. Folks, it looks beautiful. You cannot tell where it was worked on. It's seamless, and I can finally wear my engagement ring again! read more

A LITTLE TRADITIONAL FOR MY TASTES This is one of two jewelry shops featured on the square. This is the one that is fairly standard and has very traditional pieces. They do carry a couple of unique stones and a very rare gold coin pendant. However, when I am shopping for jewelry, I am looking for something that I don't have or something that causes my heart to skip a beat. My heart maintained a regular rhythm throughout my visit today. They do have a large selection and also carry white gold and sterling silver pieces as well. Customer service was very attentive and I enjoyed being able to visit the "candy shop". *** When purchasing solid gold and silver pieces, always think about weight because gold and silver sold by weight and that is what is most important. You definitely want quality pieces that hold their shape and can stand up to frequent use. I once had someone tell me "Oh we don't sell by weight, we sell by design". Don't fall for this, because she was basically trying to sell gold air for $5000 and I was curious because the piece was very light. Some pieces are light because they are hollow and those heavy pieces of quality are solid gold. You definitely want solid because when you get bored and decide to re-imagine that expensive piece of gold, you are going to want substance, not air. To clarify, I had some of my gold melted down into gold splashes that I now wear as pendants. They are very unique and of course solid gold. read more

Don't waste your time with getting anything custom. My fiance purchased a beautiful ring from there as an engagement ring. However, it's so unique shaped that it can ONLY have a custom made contour band. I went to their shop recently to discuss designing a custom band, get a quote/estimate for the cost, and see some visual options, whether they be of existing bands, or some sketches. They took down my information, and i spoke at length with the owner of the shop via phone, along with one her associates. They took my ring from me so they could do some planning, and told me I could pick it up the following Saturday (a week later). I was hesitant to leave it that long, but thought nothing of it. I came back the next Saturday (when it was ready to pick up, per our conversation AND the date written on my claim check) and it wasn't even in the store. The owner removed the ring from their store and brought it to some other jeweler she knows for her to "brainstorm a bit" to try and figure out how to make a band. A) NEVER was I asked permission or told that this ring was physically leaving your shop. B) do not make super custom rings if you're not prepared to already have some examples of matching bands to go with them. After speaking with the owner on the phone AGAIN, she told me she would send some photos and have some pricing ideas by Wednesday. I told her fine, and she finally called me around 7pm on Thursday. She told me she found a band that might work, sent me some incredibly blurry images and told me to come by Saturday to look at the band with my ring, and we could discuss further. Fine. That Saturday would have been 2 weeks since I had dropped my ring off, however, I could not make it as I had a dress appointment in Atlanta. The following Saturday (this makes week 3 to the day), I go up to the shop - an hour away, as I live in Alpharetta - and suddenly MY ring is no longer there, and neither is this band she had mentioned. I was furious. WHY would you tell someone your ring was there, and then take it out of the shop AGAIN? And AGAIN without notifying me or having my permission. I spoke to her shop assistant, who was very nice and trying to be accommodating - after all, it's NOT her fault her boss is incompetent - but the owner was also in store (finally) but couldn't be bothered to come speak to me to my face about why the hell my ring was missing after being told it was there. At this point I also found out that she had started to do work on MAKING a band, of which I NEVER asked for, NOR approved. I drove my hour back home and didn't hear from her until Tuesday, where she left me a voicemail telling me it was urgent that I come pick my ring up THAT DAY. I called her back and she kept telling me to come see the band she found and pick up my ring because she wanted to show them both to me. I reminded her for the umpteenth time that I am only able to drive up there on Saturday's. She proceeded to talk over me about how she wanted to show me the band, and how she was so happy she found a cheap one, and was really wanting me to have the two soldered together. I had to cut her off and once again remind her how upset I was because I never asked her to begin work on something custom, I only wanted a visual representation, and a quote. Her response? "Ooohhhhhhhh I didn't know that...Okay well, it will be here in the vault on Saturday and you can take a look at both." So this past Saturday (we are at a MONTH to the day), I called first to make sure it was there before making ANOTHER 2 hour round trip, I was told my ring was there, and when I got there, I was immediately given my ring (thank GOD) but was never even shown the "mystery" band. I was told "sorry for the inconvenience" and immediately left. I will NEVER step foot back into their shop again. There are plenty of other custom, locally owned and trusted jewelers in the Dahlongea area, so save yourself a headache and skip this one. read more

My wife's engagement ring needed to be repaired. I was nervous about where to take it because it's a family heirloom and an antique. The Gold Shop did an AMAZING job with the repair. The ring needed to be re-pronged, the diamond re-set, and the band rounded out. The stone also had a tiny chip on the side that they managed to expertly hide under one of the prongs. Took them less than a week to get it back to us and it came in under the original cost estimate. The final price was better than many other jewelry places charge as a starting rate for repairs like this. Most importantly, my wife is super happy with the work they did on her ring. read more

Nothing but positive things to say!!! Rachel and her staff at The Gold Shop are miracle workers!! After having a VERY negative experience with another jeweler, and left with an engagement ring I was not happy with, my fiance and I were strolling around the square on a Saturday night and decided to stop into The Gold Shop to get their opinion. First off, I was very impressed with the owner, Rachel. She is not only very friendly but also has a great eye and is very intelligent and educated with jewelry. She listened to my negative experience with the first jeweler who worked on my ring, and actually apologized to me for what he did! It is quite obvious she deeply cares about her industry and, more importantly, her customers! She was a great listener and an even better teacher! Rachel really took her time with me and explained and educated me on all that was not so great about the ring, but also all that we could do to make it better. She was incredibly detailed, and even invited me to look under a microscope to map out my jewels for verification when I picked it up. Even after my negative experience with the jeweler before Rachel, my fiance and I felt comfortable leaving the ring in her hands. So... final result... just picked it up today, and I LOVE IT!!! Rachel made it everything I dreamed of and more!! The work was absolutely incredible, and her fine taste in jewelry really shows! She of course had me look under the microscope to verify that the jewels in my ring were mine, just to be detailed! In addition, she happily bought the scrap white gold from me which was used towards the price of the ring, although the price was beyond fair to begin with! Overall, a real jewel of a shop in our own little town of Dahlonega. Rachel and her staff are amazing!! They have been open in the same location for over 35 years, and I now know why!!!
