This is a huge, beautiful Asian antiques store located right on the Chicago River. This place is sprawling- 18,000 square feet of stuff. It's all a lot to take in. Going through here is like going through an eccentric millionaire's mansion, or an Asian cultural center. The works of art and pieces of furniture are often on a large scale- that's be a huge centerpiece of any house. It seems that the owners get to travel the world looking for the coolest, oldest stuff from far flung reaches of the world. I'm astounded that some of this stuff is actually for sale- if you need an old dismantled temple, they've had it already broken down and shipped from exotic destinations. The store is divided up in kinda themed rooms. It's all sort of a jumble of Asian cool stuff. The staff is ready to help. I got a few questions in here and there, but for the most part the staff left me alone to browse. They offer free parking in their small little lot out front. There's a pagoda that they have right out in front. I heard that this building used to be the headquarters for the Encyclopedia Brittanica, but I can't vouch for that. The prices here are all fairly epic. But, this is the exact opposite of Ikea- everything is unique, nothing come packaged in easy to ship boxes. read more

What a lovely store! While it's mostly Asian antiques, they have a great mix of modern vintage and European pieces as well. Including a few truly stunning MCM wall systems, tables and coat racks. The Asian architectural pieces - pillars, wall reliefs, etc. - were so gorgeous that I wished I had some vast room or garden to place them. I had visited The Golden Triangle when this store participated in Open House Chicago last October. Located on Clark Street just north of the Chicago River, this venue features a unique treasure trove of antiques, architectural elements, and artworks. While a great deal of the selections leans towards Asian objects, there is a fine enough stylistic variety where you will feel like you have visited a small museum after a tour of the lovely showrooms. If you have a mansion to decorate or have a few dollars in your checkbook, you might just be walking away with an incredible find. read more

I had the opportunity of volunteering here at The Golden Triangle this weekend for the Open House Chicago. I had such a pleasure of meeting one of the store owners Doug and his lovely staff. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming. I walked pass this place so many times while out to lunch. I never in a million years would of known there was a treasure in this building. The showroom is filled with many exquisite and unique antique pieces. Each room has it's own rare of Asian and European antiques, furniture and different flavor custom artwork. If your ever in the area I advise everyone to just stop in and take a 10 minute tour. You won't regret stopping in and taking a magical journey. read more

To start, this place has a beautiful, carefully curated and organized collection of antiques and furnishings. It's a shame I ultimately did not have a great experience... As we were leaving, an employee asked my boyfriend and I how we were doing, without really turning to face us, and then asked with a grimace if we "enjoyed our tour." The implication seemed to be all we could do at this store was look, and there was no chance in hell we'd buy anything. That assumption was both unappreciated and wrong. Yes, the two of us were twenty-somethings stopping by in our gym clothes. That shouldn't matter. I even bought some jewelry while we were there (and as an aside, our cashier was helpful and lovely), but apparently being a "paying customer" isn't enough to become a "valued customer" unless you act/look the part. It would be great to come back here in some time to see what their next rotation of wares looks like, but I'm leaning against it. I don't feel inclined to show my paycheck at the door to get someone's respect. read more

I found my experience at The golden triangle to be an exceptional one. The owners are extremely knowledgeable and kind, offering their time and expertise in describing their pieces. All of their inventory is beautiful and unique. They have a team of artisans that are wonderfully talented and create beautiful, one of a kind pieces as well as antiques from a number of different countries. Their selection is thoughtfully laid out in beautiful showroom like areas, but the store itself is very comfortable, and allows you to visualize the pieces for your own space in a relaxed setting and environment. They use varied color combinations that are inspired. It's a beautifully, cohesively designed space, and the staff is approachable and helpful. It is a lovely place to spend an afternoon shopping. read more

We were on our way to the Loop when we spotted The Golden Triangle. It looked neat from the outside so we had to swing in. I feel that you could spend an hour here! It felt like a very upscale antique store, filled with restorations, new & old pieces, some extremely unique...and with price tags to match. The rooms just kept going, and going... However, even if I had been interested in making a purchase, I would have had no clue how to do so. We spent close to 20 minutes in the store and never once ran into anyone else (customers or otherwise!). Nor did I ever see any type of cash register or help desk. read more

My taste ran spang up against my bank account here, and taste lost. The prices here are very high, though frankly not out of line considering the quality of the merchandise. Everything is beautifully displayed in room settings, though in some areas, there's simply too much to take in. Still, this is a place to savor. I was happy to see that there were some European antiques in evidence since Asian style, particularly Chinese, which makes up the bulk of the merchandise here, is not really my glass of tea. Nice mix of antique and contemporary with a line of reclaimed materials to add an even more eclectic air. But seriously, if you're not prepared to drop hundreds if not thousands of dollars, don't expect to do much shopping here. read more

Even if you aren't in the market for Asian antiques, this store is worth checking out. Beautifully laid out with some really stunning pieces; the staff is incredibly friendly and outgoing (and not in a pushy way). They carry mostly Asian antiques but have some French and newer pieces made locally. Give yourself an hour to check everything out in detail. What my ratings mean: 1 star: Horrible. I'm annoyed I wasted my time and/or money here. 2 star: Not bad but nothing special. A decent place if you can't find something else. I'd equate this to something like McDonald's. 3 star: I enjoyed my experience there and would go back to try or do more things there. 4 star: I loved it and would be excited to go back. The staff at the Golden Triangle are non pareil . They are courteous and incredibly helpful - making you feel like a valued guest. Thelma, in particular, was extraordinarily kind in helping me to find a dealer specializing in what I was searching for. As someone who has purchased many Asian antiques, I think their prices are fair. Of course you can find similar objects at their source for a lower price, but once you have included the costs of shipping 10,000 miles or so and restoration, there will not be that much of a difference. A treasure trove of well-designed objects from around the world. My boyfriend took me there (we are both architects) and we were inspired by both the merchandise and the layout. Most items are expensive, as you might expect, but think of it as more of a gallery than a store. The owner was very friendly and gave us a behind-the-scenes tour of the woodshop where they restore antique peices and create new. read more

The website for The Golden Triangle displays many interesting and attractive pieces. However, the piece sent to me as a present would not have been one of them. As the red SOLD tag was on the piece, I called and spoke with the salesman. After explaining my situation and saying I'd like to exchange it, a store credit would be fine and I was fine with sending it back at my expense, he thought it would not be a problem. The back office, it turned out, thought otherwise. He called back and said that the folks in the back office said "no," as it was past the return period and had been a final sale with no returns. Now this was a birthday present to be sent to Boston from Chicago. It had been purchased in March for delivery the first week in April. It was not shipped from Golden Triangle until 28APR2015, arriving the first of May. Clearly customer satisfaction is not all that important at Golden Triangle. A piece purchased as a gift that they don't want back is its own message. Nor is their failure to deliver even remotely close to the time requested is also not a reason for allowing an accommodation. Scores of years in retail taught me that customer service and accommodation within reason can result long-term relationships.I won't be visiting their shop while in town. read more

They have occasional parties for their customers (including people like me who never buy anything expensive there), and last night the let me in to one of them even though I was late in responding to their invitation and they were at capacity. Not only was this kind of them, but I also realized all over again what I love about these occasions: you can spend over an hour rambling from room to room looking closely at their amazing store of objects without looking like you're casing the joint. It's one of the most beautiful spaces in the city, and seems to be getting more and more eclectic--the stuff they are selling is not just Asian, but a melange of Asian, British colonial (in Asia), French and Eastern European. Somehow they make it all cohere. If I win the lottery . . . Till then, it's a good source of jewelry and little wooden netsuke or ojime, which I give my friends' kids for birthdays and the like. read more

Walking into this place makes me feel like I'm suddenly vacationing at the home of some rich, exotic person with unbelievably good taste. It's a huge antiques store, with mainly Asian and European stuff but it feels like a well-appointed movie set you can buy from. The salespeople are knowledgeable and down-to-earth; friendly without doing that strange "gallery-lurk" you get at some places. I bought a side table there 3 years ago and still love it as much as when it called out to me in the showroom.
