I knew Matt, the Golf Doctor, from a few years back when he was working for someone else. He was always a great dude and I'm glad to see him doing well here. So I saw him for a putter fitting. I had done a SAM PuttLab fitting years ago in the past but had heard great things about Quintic. And wow, was it eye opening! Actually my father-in-law around the same time had scheduled a putter fitting with Matt as well. So we ended up going together and spent almost three hours on the putting green in the shop. SAM is more keyed in on the stroke, but Quintic has a much better representation of what the ball is doing. Both are good but let's just say I'm happy to have done this putter fitting. Here's a breakdown of how the putter fitting process went: First, Matt had us use our own putter and he placed a mirror on the face of it. When we aligned ourself to the hole, he had a laser from the hole pointing at the ball. And when the ball was removed, we could see how good or bad our aim was. After we just putted a bunch of balls to the hole. He looked consistency in our putting stroke, what type of arc we had, what length and look was best, etc. My FIL and I had vastly different fittings at this point. He wanted to start from scratch as he had a putter from 20 years ago that was too short and light. I just wondered if I could either tweak my gamer or see if anything was better. After we were relatively settled Matt then put us on the Quintic camera and software. It was so cool! We saw lots of stats regarding our stroke that I won't bore you all with. Most importantly for me was I had too much loft and the ball was skidding a ton before rolling. For me, Matt tweaked my putter's loft and lie and already I started seeing some better results. There was one putter that may have been marginally better, but he didn't try to do a hard sell which is always a big negative in most stores. For my FIL, he definitely needed something different than he had and I could already see him being more confident at the end of his session. Only trivial negatives I'll add are the selection is really, really good but isn't the best in the area. Also since I was there for a while parking had to be in a garage but that's DC. Lots of awesome things going on at the Gold Doctor in the middle of DC. I can't wait to go back and check out what else Matt has to offer. read more

Had a terrific experience at my driver fitting. I'm a 54 year old, mid-single digit hdcp who had never been on a Trackman, and Matt walked me through everything as I hit at least 100 balls while he handed me a wide variety of different clubs. Matt showed me that the mid-point kick on my current driver did not suit me -- and we eventually settled on a lower kick shaft that improved my performance. He charged a reasonable price, was patient and fun to chat with, and gave me a solid swing tip that immediately improved my #s. Highly recommend. read more

Matt, the owner, was great. During the pandemic, I was able to set an appt and take my clubs for a lie angle adjustment on my irons and a hybrid cut down. He did it while I waited. He also gave me some great technical advice while waiting. My new irons were feeling very light. I was going to use some tungsten weights but he advised on going to a lighter grip than the golf pride wrap I was using. This would change the swing weight by the few points I needed. Totally made sense if you know anything about swing weights (or the Google). Can't wait to get out and play to try my new irons! I found Matt's shop last year when I was looking for my first set of fitted irons. His approach to the fitting was methodical and personalized, much better than you'd receive from a box store. He wanted to make sure I found the right set of irons, so much so that we ran out of time before we could get to the wedge fitting. He found some time for me a few days later, free of charge, to come in and finish up. Came back this year for a driver and woods, and once again the fitting was highly personalized. Matt's extremely honest, and on more than one occasion talked me out of a pricy upgrade because he didn't think the value was there to justify the cost. You won't find a better fitter in the area. One downside is that he's a one man operation, and runs all the fittings, builds the clubs, and handles all orders himself. This can make it hard to get ahold of him and unpredictable wait times. I think the extra wait is more than worth the quality of the fitting, but if you're in a hurry this might not be the right place to go. read more

As a pro, I'm very particular about my equipment. I want someone knowledgeable and skilled who has the necessary tools and inventory to do brand agnostic and tour level club work. When my wife and I recently moved to DC, I found Matt at The Golf Doctor-DC. Since our arrival I've made several visits to see him. We did all kinds of stuff including Trackman distance gapping and subsequent loft bends, a bag analysis (which lead to dumping a wedge in favor of a 5-wood to better fill distance gaps and suit my playing style), lie angle bends to tweak a few left and rightward iron misses, 3-wood replacement (my old one cracked), and a driver replacement (my old one had a shaft snap) that even included putting hot melt in the head to help get rid of a 10-12 yard leftward miss. Needless to say, he's done a great job and his work is getting reflected in my scoring. If you live in DC or are going to be traveling or visiting and are interested in good club work to help you get the most out of your game, Matt is worth the money and fits the bill. read more

Went in on 1/2/21 for an intro session and fitting. Good instructor and pointers. Matt told me would need a few days to fit and size my clubs. I've reached out to Matt a few times, as of 2/12/21, no response. I also stopped by in late January to drop off some driver grips. I have been working to improve as a putter for most of the many years I have been playing golf. I have tried all kinds of putters and grips and any other ways to improve. So, I went to work with Matt for a putter fitting. In my time with him, I learned more about putting than I had understood previously. Matt worked on my address, stroke and even my mental approach. We worked through a number of different putter types and lengths. Then, with the help of the Quintic system, we could see precisely how I would strike each putt, how long it would take for the ball begin rolling end-over-end. I have never had a fitting, but have always heard of the benefits of getting fit for clubs. On a recent trip I decided to treat myself to a fitting for the top end of the bag and decided to visit the Golf Dr. I literally cannot speak highly enough of the experience. In addition to getting a club that was far far better fit for me and performs much better than my current driver ( and NOT a club I ever would have actually chosen myself without the data) but I learnt a lot about my swing, and the structure of my bag, and what clubs I should actually have. I was worried going in about what I would swing like, what is I am just having a bad swing day, etc., but the experience was incredible. Matt was fantastically interpersonally and just made the experience fun. I think the highest praise comes from the fact that after 2 hours of swinging things were getting a little loose (wild and right!). Matt said he didn't want to fit me while I was swinging like this and I came back a few days later to do the woods again while I was fresh. It was really clear to me that he cared about getting me fit for the right club, and not just getting me fit to a club. It was a really reassuring touch. It also is worth mentioning that Matt, as best as possible, tried to keep the costs down by testing standard and premium shafts and a range of driver costs. I also traded in all my old clubs and it made the driver, premium shaft and wood really affordable. I went for an iron fitting last Thursday and I was very impressed with Matt's knowledge and his thoroughness. After hitting my current irons he had me try out 5 or 6 shafts on a club head similar to my current Ping. After finding the shaft that works for me we must have tried 7 or 8 club heads (I only took 2 or 3 swings with a few because they didn't feel or look right). After finding my best irons we looked at the wedges and figured all that out too. I never felt rushed or pushed into purchasing anything at any time during the fitting. So my husband is a weekend golfer. Unless you count all the days he's reading about golf, watching golf, watching golf drills, watching golf vlogs, talking about golf, shopping for golf things online, and just like overall bothering me with golf information and showing me pictures of golf things he says he needs. Then he's like a 365 day/year golfer. I'm not really sure where you draw the line. Anyway... Mitch was in need of some properly fit clubs. He had been messing around with used clubs for a while (that was a total hit or miss situation) and we finally decided to just get some new, properly fit clubs...(i.e. I decided because I was really OVER him telling me he needed to order another set of used clubs because the last set wasn't the right length or the right shaft)... and he had been talking to Matt about adjusting loft/lie on a set of clubs he already had so he really wanted to go see Matt for a fitting when we started talking about new clubs. Matt was totally welcoming and warm and made me feel as comfortable as he did for my husband. I know this is random and you probably didn't scroll down to the reviews to read about how this guy treats +1's at appointments, but it's totally relevant. You have a choice when you spend your dollars and choosing someone who has character enough to recognize the important of the wife's presence is crucial. Anywho... to the golf stuff... (which I am legit NOT qualified to speak on but I'm going to anyway). Matt uses TrackMan Golf Simulator which is an indoor radar launch monitor that allows coaches and fitters (and golfers) to gather meaningful data on a golfer's swing that includes: -3D trajectory of shot & landing -smash factor -spin rate -launch angle -carry -ball speed -club speed -dynamic loft -attack angle club path -face angle (Visit TrackManGolf.com if you don't know what these things are). More significantly, though, Matt applies an engineering mind to the data generated by TrackMan. If you are someone who has consistent swing patterns that you are looking to fit or compensate for, Matt understands the physical principals behind club construction and the products available on the market to provide the best possible tools to improve your golf game. He carries a pretty wide variety of clubs and is very familiar with the nuances of each manufacturer and range of products, as well as goes the extra step to figure out the best way to buy shafts/heads so as to create the most cost-efficient way of purchasing for the golfer. The combination of Matt's analysis/knowledge with the data from TrackMan is the key for matching your swing statistics to your perfect club. The only little tidbit of advice I would offer (which Matt conveyed) is to schedule enough time for a proper fitting. Don't try to schedule a whole bag in one day (one day over 2 weekends is preferred... although I'd recommend going a little further and doing irons/woods/putters on 3 separate days). And make sure you are physically ready to perform 150-200 good swings. Mitch got fit for irons and he hit balls for almost 3 solid hours. He was VERY sore the next day. Tips regarding the facility itself: -There is metered (2 hour) parking immediately in front of the building and lining the block. The meters out front accept credit/debit cards. If you are getting fit and you don't have someone with you to feed the meter, you should probably set a timer on your phone for 2 hours so you will remember to feed the meter. -There is a parking garage next door (not sure what this costs as we used the meter). -Walk in the side door of the building (where the Golf Doctor sign is) and use the elevator to go up to 3. At the time of this writing, there was a little white button above the actual elevator buttons to get you to the 3rd floor. This was super confusing for me but Mitch figured it out immediately. -If you are hitting, you'll be plenty warm. But if you are cold-blooded like me and just watching, take a jacket. -I believe Matt only accepts appts for fittings so it's not like anyone is going to be watching you hit. The only circumstance you'd have an audience is if you bring a partner or friend. Which honestly if you do bring someone, he/she had better be super interested in golf (example: not for the wives who get bored really fast and complain). To wrap this up, the hubs and I were both super impressed with this experience. Clubs should be delivered in a few weeks, at which time Matt will actually build these particular clubs in-house (or put them together, rather). Then Matt recommended Mitch hit with the clubs for a few weeks/outings and then bring them back in to adjust loft/life if it's necessary. I'm trying to encourage my husband to leave his own review here so you have an actual golfer's perspective. So stay tuned for that. I'm the typical weekend (hack) warrior that gets out as much as possible, but not a single digit handicap. Matt didn't treat me any different or push me towards any clubs in particular. Matt even offered to re-shaft my current irons but it made more financial sense to buy new ones that are fitted for my game.
