I randomly visited The Good Good after an event in Harlem and was throughly impressed with my experience. The restaurant is in an unassuming location that turned out to be an intimate, beautifully decorated space. Although the restaurant was busy, I was seated quickly. I ordered jerk mushrooms, fried sweet plantains, and the drink special. The food was delicious and filling. The drink was also good but it really wasn't a "special" as it ended up costing more than my food items. Met a friend at Good Good after having a great experience there before. We stopped by around 12:30 PM without a reservation and found the place completely packed, with only a few seats available at the bar. I ordered the Coconut Fish Sandwich ($28), and my friend had the Smoked Salmon Benedict ($27). The coconut-battered basa was crispy and flavorful, with a subtle sweetness that really worked well. My friend finished every bite of her Benedict, so I'd say that was a hit too. Great food, lively atmosphere, and another wonderful visit. The service was super helpful and we went for a few of their most popular dishes. Jerk mushrooms and Brussels sprouts: I'm putting them together because I found similar problems in both. First, they came at room temperature and tasted like they were barely reheated... not a good start. Second, both lacked flavor... tastes very plain. Last - just my opinion - I don't think the ingredients in both appetizers worked well together. I didn't enjoy either of them. Codfish fritters: disappointing. A very small serving of fritters that tastes like they had very little cod in them. They were more doughy than fishy. Branzino: although the fish was delicate and cooked perfectly, I wasn't a fan of the butter peri-peri sauce, which I found (again) lacking flavor. Hot honey fried: this was a solid dish, and the batter was sweet, spicy and crunchy as advertised. Overall, after reading the reviews my expectations were high. However, I'm not gonna lie, I was disappointed. Almost everything we ordered had problems, and considering their high price tag ($150 for the above), we were expecting more creativity and surely much higher quality. I went here for my 35th birthday dinner and I really enjoyed myself. As soon as I walked in the ambiance caught my attention immediately, I loved how dim and romantic the vibe felt. I started with a Daiquiri that was so well made followed by the jerk mushrooms which were an instant favorite, I keep thinking about them. My entree was the Branzino which was so flavorful, it was laid on top of on a bed of veggies that were so delicious. They were tangy and crisp, they were one of my favorite elements in the dish. This is what I call a breakfast worth $25. Long story short, the Jerk seasoning changes the game; that is the secret sauce here. It brings out depth and heat to the rest of what you're eating. And then its also incorporated into the potatoes too and with the omlete oozing with juices it just makes the potatoes burst with flavor even more. This was one of those meals that you have to eat slowly because you don't want it to be gone. Service: 5/5 - It was great! Might be a little biased considering that we came right in the morning and a snowstorm just laid waste the night before. So even though I thought ahead and booked a resy safe to say that they were quite accommodating to the 4 of us in the establishment during our service. With my daughter's trip back home to the West Coast fast approaching, she and I thought about doing brunch at a quaint spot in City Island- but decided to come here instead. The African music playing softly in the background, set the mood alright. Although Good Good is on the smallish side, you shouldn't be fooled by the size of this place. The menu offers something for everyone and we felt the flexibility is worth it! Between the vegetarian and pescatarian items offered, that my kid and I can eat, we couldn't decide what to order- because everything sounded delicious. The fluffy codfish fritters she and I shared have a nice heat and are totally unmissable! I'm not finished. She and I shared a side of fried sweet plantains- and these are done on the spot- none of that day-old crap that a lot of restaurants pull. Thank you! Dessert was a perfectly soaked layered cake (tres leches). My friend left nothing but bones for the chicken dish, repeatedly commenting on the high quality of the dish. The dish that lacked flavor and consistency was the rice and bean appetizer dish that the wait staff did not know how to say. Overwhelmed with thyme, the jasmine rice was dry and kidney beans hardly evident. We ate only two spoonfuls. The restaurant lighting is soft with a warm orange/yellow glow, perfectly reproduced in all the photos posted for this restaurant. Old fashioned was a solid choice but I'd love to try some of their more unique cocktails in the future. Yams, Brussels sprouts, and mushrooms were all outstanding. We came in carrying paintings from a previous event, and they even coat-checked them for us. Everyone at the table ordered something different, I chose the margarita, which was good! The only thing is that it was about $18, so I do wonder what tequila they used. I'm also curious to try the food next time.
