I have ordered from this establishment on separate occasions and have been disappointed each time. Charging $23 for a soup and a grilled cheese (without following any directions) is actually a bit ridiculous. Not to mention at THE BASE price for a burger with NOTHING on it is $23?! Literally a burger patty and buns. I can't speak negatively on the quality of the food, however, what we receive is not justifiable of the prices they have listed. A nice, cozy, and cold bar. Let's say the day I was there, the heat was broken, but they made up for it with the servers and the main dish. For drinks, I had the Lagunitas IPA Non-alcoholic. Super delicious and refreshing. Very interested in how it tastes compared to the one with alcohol. For one of my appetizers, I share the Wild Mushroom Flatbread Whipped ricotta, arugula, honestly not a fan of this flatbread I was not impress of this app. I will not recommend this dish. Salmon Burger and French fries, a butter lettuce, with tomato, red onion, and chipotle aioli. Super Delicious and pretty big, I also added bacon to it. The French fries were super crunchy and muy bueno. The services have nice and good did a good job with the table. There aren't many old school restaurants like this. I was happy to sit in what feels like a tavern. I went twice. The first time, I ordered the make your own omelet with was delicious and made me want to go home and try my culinary talents. Soft, fluffy and the ingredients I chose, avocado, bacon and cheese made it add up fast. This was a pricey omelet. But there were no greens so I asked my waitress where were my greens. She said my dish doesn't come with greens. I thought she was mistaken but took her word for it. I thought to myself that I would swapped my potatoes for greens but ‍... The next day I went back to get the same thing and saw on the menu that greens does come with my custom omelette and felt like I had no recourse. I did order the same thing and the pic reflects that. Very clean inside, very courteous staff & excellent service. Very good craft beer selection, including NA beers. Entrees at lunch were limited to sandwiches. Food is on the pricy side, & portions are on the small side, but food is good quality & hit all the right notes. This was my second time eating here. This time it was with my wife and 16 year old daughter. The food was excellent. We each got the Hilltop Burger. The beers my wife and I got were great as well. Their beer taps are clearly well maintained and the service was good and friendly. I REALLY want to see these guys succeed. The neighborhood needs them. But instead of being absolutely packed on a Saturday evening with a 15+ minute wait they were practically empty. The only reason I can see for that is pricing. $23 is very high for a burger with fries in this neighborhood. If they dropped it by $3-4 I think they would easily double their business. Hilltop Park Alehouse is one of the go-to places for social gatherings in Washington Heights. I've been here twice: the first was for a Columbia grad student orientation happy hour, the second was for a work lunch. The food is honestly pretty good here! I remember enjoying the food that was served during the happy hour and more recently, I really liked the salmon burger. Would I come here on my own? Probably not as I'm not a heavy drinker and the interior is not my vibe, so dark and brown lol. But since it seems to a fixture in the neighborhood for those working at Columbia, I will probably end up going to Hilltop many more times in the future through my participating of work events. By far the worst lunch experience I've ever had. The service was terrible, the food was overly salted, and the drinks were astronomically overpriced. Be aware that gratuity is included on bills over $100; make sure to check the fine print on the menu. This is just a way to protect themselves from their terrible practices. I walked into a relatively quiet Friday lunch crowd around 2 pm. I had just finished my 80-hour work week and was looking for a place to eat after visiting a friend. I decided to stop into Hilltop Ale House, which turned out to be my first mistake. Upon sitting at the bar, I was promptly greeted and given a menu and a glass of water. However, that's where the efficiency of service ended. The bartender seemed more interested in flirting with another employee. Well, kids will be kids, and it was somewhat entertaining listening to their mindless banter. After about 15 minutes of feeling like an inconvenience as a patron, I placed my order for a burger and fries along with a double Milagro and soda. I finished my meal, which felt more like a Friday night dinner for me. I managed to order another drink (the same) during the riveting employee social hour. In their defense, their doubles were strong, so that was a plus. By this point, I was about a movie and a half into what they had playing at the bar. Given my Hilltop experience at this point, I resorted to putting in my headphones to drown out the terrible background noise. Thank goodness for smartphones! Against my better judgment, I ordered another drink. Yes, I know, what a lush! But hey, it's the weekend, so please forgive me. I finished my final cocktail and handed over my card without a second thought, only to be promptly given a bill totaling $165. I was shocked to say the least. This is when I realized I was drinking $33 bottom-shelf drinks. I asked the bartender if I could speak with the manager. A young woman named Amy came over; she was holding court at the bar earlier. I told her that my bill was well out of order. She was unflinching on my complaints of prices. I stated that if someone orders a double at a restaurant, it's not typically double the price. Her response was, "What do you want me to do?" At this point, I noticed a gentleman standing behind me, another manager. I introduced myself since he was just standing there staring at me. I told him the issue at hand and was given the same response. At this point, I asked for them to remove a drink, which they did. My point here is I wouldn't have hesitated to spend the money if it was warranted. A hole-in-the-wall pub has no place charging these prices for subpar food, ridiculously priced drinks and atrocious service. If you made it this far, one could only hope you don't go there or, more likely, find a new job because you don't have a career in food services. read more

Hilltop Alehouse is an absolute GEM of the Washington Heights neighborhood. I've been there many times at this point, and frankly I'm surprised I haven't written a review yet. Particular highlights during my many visits (although the menu does change seasonally) are the mussels, the fig and brie flatbread, the mushroom flatbread, and (this item has been a staple) the Hilltop BURGER. It's one of the top 3 burgers I've had in the city, a decadent treasure that makes you wonder why it's hidden up in the heights! The ambiance is really beautiful and sophisticated feeling and I especially enjoy the lights they have for Christmas time. The only reason we don't come here more often is because of prices. It just feels a little high for a neighborhood joint. The manager Amy agreed but once we were there she had another party planned and needed the place by 5pm so my party of 25 had to leave before 5 so they can set up for the other party. Stopped here on a whim for lunch and was impressed by the food and service. Our waitress was very attentive and helpful but never intrusive. We tried the grilled chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries, roasted pear flatbread, and popcorn chicken along with a couple of draft beers in our group of 4. Everyone tried all of it and all was universally delicious. Far better than expected. The popcorn chicken especially - you often get premade frozen chicken balls at a bar, but these are clearly house made and tender. Delicious! Hilltop has been bookmarked for quite some time. Last night was the night that we finally decided to remove it and try it out. It's a pretty spacious restaurant with a woody interior and a big bar in the back. You probably wouldn't have to worry about making reservations here due to all the seating (they also have outdoor seating too). Our waitress, Nicole, took our order pretty much right away once we sat down. They have some good cocktails here; the winners in my opinion were the Mayor Dinkins and the Gina Torres. To eat, we ordered the Hilltop Burger and the roasted chicken. The burger was tasty and came with some awesome garlic parm fries. The roasted chicken with the garlic mash was also good too. Everything satisfied our ravenous hunger. The only downside to last night was that the service was SLOW. Like, it took about 15-20 mins for each drink to come out. At the end, we topped off with another order of garlic parm fries and those took over 30 mins to come out too. I think they were just pretty short staffed yesterday. From my observations, there was only one waitress taking care of the whole inside/bar area and there was a waiter tending to the outdoor area. Came here early evening on a Monday and it was pretty easy to get a table. It's a spacious restaurant with your standard bar-type decor and everything was clean and organized. This place is probably good for larger parties - there seemed to be one on its way out when we arrived and it looked to be about 15-20 ppl based off of the tables that were put together there. They also seemed on top of covid protocols - they asked us for vaccination proof when we arrived and confirmed we wanted indoor (they also have an outdoor space) and they seated us far enough from another small table of diners. On their menu, they had a smaller insert for shareable starters and from that we got Pork Carnitas Tacos and Buttermilk Crispy Chicken Sliders. The Pork Carnitas Tacos were good but I wouldn't mind if they added more flavor or seasoning. The Buttermilk Crispy Chicken Sliders were super good though - juicy and crispy and the flavors were well-balanced with the pickles. We also got the Spicy Sausage Flatbread and the Hilltop Burger. Both were pretty good! The Flatbread was yummy and probably good for those who don't like spicy food too hahah (as in it def was not spicy). The burger was definitely on the larger side. I think I prefer my fries a little crispier but they were still good and fresh - though I noticed from other reviews that you could get garlic parmesan fries...maybe I missed it but I don't remember hearing that as an option when our waitress took our order. However our waitress was friendly and helpful and even changed my request for my burger from medium well to medium rare after I changed my mind a few minutes after giving our order (whoops!).
