Looked this place up, for the first time yesterday, and made an appointment for the afternoon. When I arrived, the entrance reminded of a speakeasy bar from back east. The entrance is behind a metal gate, and after entering you go down a flight of stairs, that leads you into the barber area, with windows that let you see into the shop as you're walking by. Each barber has a mirror in front of their chair, so the customer (and barber) can keep an eye on the progress of the haircut. TV's galore in the place, so no one is missing out on sports, and the staff are just laid back chill men and women, who enjoy conversing with the customers. Very nostalgic place, as it reminds me of the haircuts I use to get, in the 1980's as a kid, from the Italians in Bronx, NY and would sit in the shops and listen to older men conversing about their day, lives, family and so on. My barber was Addie. Professional, welcoming and an absolutely wonderful barber. From the moment she greeted me, to the moment I left, Addie was the consummate professional, thoughtful and took meticulous care with the type of haircut I asked for. We chatted it up, about Austin, Texas and many other things, including travel, while she was cutting my hair, and I was just enjoying the comfortable atmosphere that was created in this place. One of the best haircuts that I've received, since being here in Austin, TX. I will definitely be a returning/regular customer of this place, and will make sure to book Addie for my appointments, as she was on the money with my haircut. I don't like to get haircuts away from home. It's hard for me to explain my haircut, or maybe other barbers just don't listen and do what they want. Needless to say I'm loyal and try to go back to the same person. Four years at my current location! That said, I missed my two week window and had to go out of town for work and yelp recommended this barbershop . I lucked out and called early to get an appointment. I ended up with Matt Matthews. He is an active listener. I know he listened because he clarified with questions and then performed. He was meticulous and spent a good amount of time (and probably 8 guards) fading the sidewalls. Matt gave me exactly what I asked for and did it in about 25 minutes, including a straight razor neck shave. I feel a little guilty that I like it better than back home but alas, glad to find a place on the road I can trust. read more

I was visiting Austin from Los Angeles where everything is currently shut down, so I looked up a barbershop around my hotel so I can get a haircut. I found this gem of a place on google and decided to give it a shot. To access the place you have to walk down the stairs from the street. I really liked the design of the place, very classic barbershop and I loved that they have an extra mirror for every station so that even if you're turned the other way, you can always see the progress on your haircut. Place was hard to find but I asked the business on the corner and they directed me to the door that leads to the stairway to the barber shop in the basement. This is the best haircut ive got in texas since moving here from LA in 2012. Courtney paid attention to what I asked for and she was perfect not in a hurry to cut too much off. WOW, what a fantastic experience from start to finish. They have an online appointment system that made it very easy to schedule a haircut. I had Dan, and he was incredibly kind, listened to what I wanted, and gave a great haircut. Afterwards, he used a razor to shave the back of my neck, and a neck massager which felt good. I just moved to Austin and scheduled an appointment here for a haircut because of the good reviews. When I arrived, I was immediately introduced to my barber, Courtney. I didn't have to wait at all. I had a wonderful experience with Courtney. She is an excellent barber and spent a lot of time making sure that the cut looked good. Constantly impressed by the barbers here. When I moved to Austin 4 years ago I -somewhat regrettably- had half my hair bleached. After that hair style became untenable I went here for my first ever haircut in the city. Seemingly effortlessly, Brie took my hair down shorter than I was used to and still gave me one of the best cuts of my life. I've ended up switching over to another barber, Parker, mostly due to my own scheduling messiness. Parker consistently tightens things up, makes it all look good, politely offers good suggestions, and often does it with little notice and in a small amount of time. Genuine professionals who get the job done well and effectively and comfortably. I would recommend this place a thousand times over. They got a good thing going. read more

I really wanted to like this place more than I did. I really did. When you walk down the stairs, you see a well lit, classy open space with four barber chairs, lots of mirrors, and a couple of flat screen TVs showing sports. The conversation is clearly congenial and even a bit jovial, the barbers pleasant, and the equipment clearly well kept. There is a great deal of professional pride at work here, obviously. Five stars for the online reservation system, which saves me a phone call and the awkwardness of talking to someone I don't care to talk to asking me questions I don't care to answer. I arrived fifteen minutes early, and directed to small table with a mini-fridge and a few snacks. I wanted to point out that this mini-fridge is TINY; it had trouble with a six-pack of canned soda. There was the obligatory beer and a few sodas, though, I just wanted to point out the token effort. There are magazines scattered around, and yes, there's a few Playboys, though I don't know why you'd want to look at porn in public (what are you going to do about it??). I was seated in the barber's chair about five minutes prior to my scheduled appointment, and Deb did a good job of trying to chat me up. I had originally asked for a straight-razor shave all over - both my face and my head - but she told me that she didn't "like" shaving heads and offered a "very close" buzz of my head instead., which I accepted. Not that I had any real options. What the hell? I have never in my life heard of a professional not doing a service because she didn't "LIKE" it. Certainly not an option in my career path. Granted, she was very thorough with the clippers, making several passes and paying attention to things like hairs on my ear and such, but still. Once she finished with that, she did the hot towel/face massage/lather preparation for the straight razor shave. During the process she described the products she was using and what she was doing, which I enjoyed. She took her time with the shave, and seemed to know what she was doing. After the shave she applied some post-shave products (a balm and an aftershave, I think) and massaged them into my face. So why three stars? Because despite all her attention to detail and talk of making multiple passes, I sit here an hour later and my face isn't smooth. I just paid $60 with the intention of having my head and face shaved, and instead I'm sitting at home with a (admittedly closely) buzzed head and face that's scratchy. For me, it's not a big deal - I just got the shave because I felt like it. Can you imagine, though, if you were getting married or some such? Despite the hype and the nice location, I won't be back. You can dress it up all you want, but in the end, the cut wasn't what I asked for and the shave wasn't up to what I can do at home with a Gillette. My search for a real barber continues. read more

It was an above average barber cut, and not the one I asked for. I asked for a faux hawk cut from Ryan, with the length pretty long on the sides...trimmed but long- he proceeded to clip the sides (using a #4) which was too short, and just seemed to do a sort of standardized cutting on the top - no real technique. The atmosphere is pretty cool albeit a little difficult to find - you have to go through a gated door and down a stair case. There is a pool table and mini bar - Ryan and his mom are very nice, but almost a little too creepy nice...like dead bodies under the floor nice. Anyhoo, for $22, I'd expect more in a haircut, and if I want to do a barber style again, I'll go to Wooten on the drag. read more

They combine old-school technique with modern fashion. They are both extremely friendly and will always remember your name and everything about you! It's a little mecca in the heart of down! They have a comfortable couch to sit in while you wait, plenty of televisions, a pool table and plenty beverages and magazines. The shave was not done to the optimum best and they failed to clean up after the shave especially when mentioned that I had to be in meetings all day .. Not worth the price .. I started going here about a year ago after many failed attempts to find a consistent haircut in town. Places like Birds and Finley's are fine but they seem to randomly move barbers around to their various shops on unpredictable days so last minute appointments with your favorite barber at your favorite location is fairly impossible. Because of this, I would just roll the dice and get the barber-du-jour which worked 90% of the time, but for a $25 haircut, I shouldn't have to deal with a 10% fail rate. So I decided to give this place a go and I've been livin' the good life ever since. My haircut is pretty simple but my hair is extremely fine and I've been told "difficult" before by other barbers but Nick handles it in stride. He pays attention to details and I leave feeling lighter and happier. The other barbers tend to have more of a 9-to-5 work week schedule but Nick stays a little later which works better for me. Appointments online are simple, you see the schedule of every barber and you pick a time that works for you. Prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is laid back and easy. Parking in the lot costs a little extra so if you're not working, living or visiting downtown often, it's something to consider. Bike parking is available on Brazos, south of 5th on the east side of the street if you're coming in on two wheels. read more

My husband found this place when he was deciding where to get his hair cut for our wedding several years ago. Since his haircut and face shave with a straight-edge razor three years ago, he has been talking about this place nonstop and how bad he wants to go back. They are only open during the week, so it has been impossible for my husband to go, but this year for our anniversary we took the day off and stopped in. In 2009, they did a great job with his hair cutting it short and making it look perfect. This time, however, my husband is growing his hair out and I don't think they knew what to do with it, or maybe they didn't understand what he was looking for. He asked for them to trim out the back so it didn't look like he had a mullet, that way it would grow more evenly as it grew out. They chopped the back off and left the top long, so with a little bit of grease and a leather jacket, my husband could look like he came out of the 50's. But really, when it comes down to it, it's all about the straight-edge shave. They leaned him back in the chair, wrapped his face in warm towels, put warm shaving cream on his face, and made his cheeks smoother than a baby's butt. He was in heaven, and that's all I wanted for him. The barbershop has a pool table, sports on the tvs, and free drinks (donations accepted for those who overindulge). The staff is very friendly. Hands down one of the best haircutting experiences I've had. It is a little tricky to find but it feels like you are going to a secret club; open a nondescript metal gate, open another door, walk down to the basement. Debbie cut my hair and was as friendly as could be. She explained the difference between barbers and stylists (dry cuts, when learning they mostly cut guys hair, stylists are not allowed to use a straight razor). Definitely enjoyed the perks and the difference of going to an actual barber; the neck shave, trimming of ear hair and back rub using the old school electric vibrating thingy make the extra cost well worth it. Even though I have never been a big fan of downtown traffic and parking, I will gladly make the sojourn again. Pro-tips: Even though the sign and website indicate some ability for walk-ins, they had to turn a fellow away while I was there...so calling for an appt is highly recommended. Very disappointed, their web site claims a "traditional barbershop" opening at 7:00AM. I'm in town for two weeks of convention and need a beard clipper trim. I arrive this morning well before 7:00 AM at 7:05 or so thy open. Attendant checks his cell phone and asks if I have an appointment I do not. A "traditional barbershop" does not require appointments. I've been a customer here for over a year, getting a cut once a month on average. I have no plans to ever go anywhere else! Consistent, quality cuts, very reasonable rates, very professional and friendly staff/owners. I never thought of getting a haircut being a 'bright spot' to my day, but i actually look forward to making an appointment with these guys. Apparently I'm not the only who feels this way because their days get filled quickly--I can generally get in the same day if I call by 10am, but its always worth the wait if they're filled. When leaving San Diego for some new adventure one of my biggest stresses was leaving the person that had cut my hair for 8 years. The Good Life ha filled the void, and more specifically Ryan Vidotto. He and his team can work magic with your mop. Make sure you have an appointment because they are always busy, and while they do take walk-ins it is a real crap shoot if you'll be seen. It is a true gentlemen's barber shop. Straight razor to clean up your neck accompanied by a nice warm lather of shaving cream, beer in the fridge, and sports playing on the TV. This is the first time I've ever had a non-korean lady near my hair with scissors. Not racist but non-asians do not understand the absolutely sickening amount of hair I have. Nick was selected in a very long and thought out process to be chosen for the very exclusive privilege of cutting my hair after I cultivated it for almost 2 years and I have to say I couldn't have been happier.
