If you and your climbing partner have a significant weight difference or you like feeling terrified just top roping - DO NOT GO HERE. This is the literal only gym I've ever been to that just drapes the top-ropes over the anchors, rather than looping them over once. (And I used to climb at the Movement in San Francisco which this was NOT the case at.) This creates a HUGE issue for the lighter weight climber when belaying, and is frankly so scary it's made me not like climbing anymore. All they offer are some giant, dirty kettlebells for you to lug around with you, but that only (kind of) stops you from launching in the air. It doesn't prevent the extreme amount of friction you have to fight through the Grigri. I've never even had this much of a problem lead climbing, because we can use an ohm, which you can't use top roping because it pins the rope to the wall which is unsafe for the climber. When I brought up this concern to someone who works there they shrugged it off like it wasn't a big deal, and said "oh well it's better because lowering is faster this way" uh... okay, but it's not better if i'm literally fighting for my life simply to lower my partner and not kill them or be launched into the air?? but yeah, lowering faster is nice, sure. I want so badly to like this gym, but the complete lack of regard for safety is mind-boggling. The biggest shame is that it's the only gym of it's type in the area so it's either climb here unsafely, or don't climb at all. Shame on Movement Corporate for not doing more to regulate the safety at their gyms. read more

I've only bouldered here so I can't comment much about top rope/lead. Staff are very friendly - asking membership questions, lost and found, intro climbing lessons etc have all been positive experiences for me. Climbers also tend to be friendly as well; people are usually more than happy to chat about beta and provide tips when asked. Routesetting is decent. Lots of fun, interesting problems at higher grades. The slab area upstairs is small but usually has some really enjoyable climbs. However, climbs below V2 are almost all ladders, and the routesetters' ideas for "spicy" low grade climbs tend to be worse handholds/steeper inclines rather than provide interesting challenges for newer climbers. Every now and then you come across a climb where the crux seems to be "try not to accidentally use this massive handhold from a different climb located in the most inconvenient spot possible." But overall, I'd say the routesetting is a positive. Now for the main reason that this review is only 2 stars: safety. Or rather, a complete lack of it. People sit/stand directly in front of the wall all the time, even when they're not about to climb anything. Most are happy to move when you ask, but you will get the occasional dirty look. Coaches and off-duty routesetters are often the worst offenders here. Chalk bags, climbing shoes, and phones frequently litter the ground directly underneath the wall. People walk directly underneath climbers in the bouldering area *all the time*, and even when other people are watching usually no one says anything. In over a year of climbing here, I have yet to see a single instance of an employee enforcing a safety rule in the bouldering area. Occasionally, there are horrifically dangerous climbs that almost make me think one of the routesetters has a side deal with a personal injury attorney (see attached photo). tl; dr: Lots of fun climbs, but when it comes to safety you're on your own. read more

Man , it's been a while! I haven't climbed a rock wall since I was a kid (since I was much lighter). Indoor climbing really does put your health in perspective. This place is very cool and has a very awesome staff. The dudes who signed me up for a day pass were great, and the people I presumed to be "regulars" seemed chilled out as well. The bouldering section is interesting; you have people climbing and also supportive spectators. I think the small workout session near the exercise floor's entrance was perfect! I have been climbing at The Cliffs at Valhalla since they opened a few years ago (and for many years before that. As an experienced climber, I am super picky, and do have some suggestions for improvement. However, if The Cliffs were to shut down tomorrow, I would probably lose my mind. Hence the 5 stars. Here's what's great. It's a climbing gym. That's not a given if you live in Westchester and not, say, Boulder CO. It's well designed and big, with plenty of altitude for a decent top rope or lead climb, and has three auto belays and lots of bouldering for when your partner is off coaching soccer for 10 year olds. It's got the logistics down. They have an easy to navigate website, which they keep up to date with events and announcements. Everything -- waivers, memberships, charges -- is done online. The staff is super friendly and helpful. So are the regulars (climbing is a friendly sport). The monthly membership fee is very reasonable and they give you a free guest pass once a month so you can introduce new potential belay slaves to the gym because your partner's soccer coaching schedule is out of control. Here's what could use improvement. The top/lead rope routes seem to be set mostly by teenage bouldering dudes with abnormal finger (and overall) strength but limited understanding of a true outdoor rope climb. My favorite climbs are thoughtful and precise, with delicate footwork and interesting moves. Also, there should be some variations in difficulty of moves -- crux move, then rest, etc. There are barely any rests, unlike true outdoor climbs. There's just one routesetter right now (PJ) whose climbs meet those qualities. The rest range from ok to not worth it. The bouldering is just ok. One thing I hate is that they've removed the ratings. Every climb outside is rated, so you know what you're getting into. Why the guesswork? Or, alternatively, the running back and forth between outdated photos of the walls with ratings and the walls. So annoying. But that's just the perspective of one short and somewhat out of shape climber, who is climbing 5.10s at this time. It may be a completely different story for stronger, younger, and/or harder climbing folk. Also, best to go early on weekends to avoid the never ending stream of kids birthday parties. I am grateful that these events help keep The Cliffs in business, but the screaming, etc. ... ugh ... One time, they even roped off much of the gym to create some kind of tightrope thing for a group of kids. It was incredibly annoying. They haven't done it again, though, so maybe they realized not such a good idea. It's also amateur hour with zero policing. People walking under ropes, taking photos, doing their douchey fitness rituals etc., kids running rampant thru the space with no parents in sight, etc. It's got the climbing gym atmosphere down to a tee. Friendly, helpful staff who all seem about 16 years old. Bare minimum locker room. Ratty couches in small lounge area with tv on endless climbing video loop for non-climbers/slackers to hang out. Small workout area, with a few cardio machines, a "woody" (it's not what you think), and hang board. Energy drinks and bars and equipment and climbing clothes for sale. Everything covered in a fine layer of chalk dust. read more

This place could be fantastic if events were organized better. I've been dropping in for a year and never found an issue with finding plenty of top rope options or parking. I decided to become a member a month ago and seems in the past 2-3 weeks my weekly drop in day of Tuesday night is complete chaos. I usually come in between 5:30-6pm Tuesday nights but the last two weeks seems the Gym is hosting multiple events like the climbing league and other events which means regular people who want to come in and climb can't. I spent 3 weeks driving 30mins to get there to have to leave due to no top rope availability or parking. I do other activities and this has been my climbing day for a while and seems all of a sudden I can't climb on the one evening I want to come in. I feel rush hour is not the time to have multiple events going on. These events should be during slow time so it doesn't affect fellow paying members. Unfortunately if this doesn't resolve soon me and my daughter whom both recently became members will have to cancel. We both have very busy schedule and have 1 evening a week we would love to come and climb and can't. No point to pay and drive there to have to be turned away due to lack of parking or top rope availability. Front desk people are super nice but upper management should be mindful or schedules and how it affects fellow members. I am sure if you can get there during the day it would be fine but weekday evening have proven to be a problem for me. Specifically Tuesday evenings. I must be dumb. Valhalla is clearly the best gym in new york besides brooklyn boulders. They have so much bouldering it's ridiculous. Why would I even think the roc club had more? That place sucks so bad. I've only been climbing for the summer (almost 3 months) and I'm working V5's. Everyone here is so friendly. A lot of the people that work here I've become friends with. The problems are so good that I don't even mind climbing them over and over. There's also a little section in the cave with maybe 10 bouldering problems (a little hidden gem). Kootz is the best setter ever. PJ sets good shit that he thinks are V3's and V4's but they are really V5's and V6's. Don't worry the music is good. Don't go anywhere else (besides BKB) because Valhalla is the bomb. Plus if you had a summer membership then you get one month free off a yearly membership. read more

I'm very new to the sport of rock climbing so I don't have anything with which to compare, but I think this is a great facility. Located just off the Bronx River Parkway between North White Plains and Pleasantville, it's quiet on Saturday and Sunday mornings and pretty busy on Weekday evenings and Weekend afternoons. I recently bought a package for the 101 and 201 classes. The package also includes a free month membership. The 101 course was great. I completed the class with a nice foundation of basic climbing knowledge and took and passed the Belay test so that my husband and I can come and climb on our own/belay each other without supervision. The staff is friendly and welcoming. The space is large and there are many walls for climbing and bouldering. It's pretty amazing to sit back and watch the folk who are seasoned climbers. People weightlessly scale the walls like they're Spiderman. And even though, as a new climber I feel a bit like an outsider looking in, the Cliffs seem to foster a true sense of community and comaraderie among its members. read more

I know this may seem rude, but if you are thinking about going here at least read this through. I am certified instructor, an experienced outdoor climber, and have been to many gyms. I can say with upmost confidence, this is the worst climbing gym I have ever been to. You'd think the richest county in the U.S.A would have a much nicer facility. There are some pros, but there are many cons. PROS- 1. Plenty of parking. 2. Good snacks and gear. 3. Nice common area with free wifi, comfy couches, and awesome climbing videos. 4. The route setting on the roped climbs are closer to outdoor grades (5.9 feels like 5.7 or 8 vs a 5.10 feeling like a 5.7) and more comparable to the boulder setting than found in most gyms. 5. Pretty clean. CONS- 1. REALLY small workout area. Maybe the second floor should have some training gear eh? 2. Horrible route setting on the boulder problems. Scrunchy, barely any foot chips used, not enough problems for beginners. My girlfriend was pissed most of the time she was here, making it real fun for me. A V4 with one foot chip on it, you want me to tear my shoes up smearing on your wall? No thanks, there is NO glory in gym climbing respect peoples gear. Teach movement with proper foot chip placement. 3.Unwarranted risks...When developing a climbing gym and working in a gym the goal is to eliminate any risks which may result in a negligence law suit. You have an overcrowded gym, and moveable pads for your bouldering area. First mistake. The boulder problems aren't labeled, second mistake. There has already been a lawsuit in another gym because a lady hurt herself on a boulder problem which was too difficult and not labeled properly. Also making people walk back and forth under/around other climbers to see the grades adds more risk. 4.Some of your staff are friendly, some are insulting. 5. Jerry city. So many people bouldering with harnesses on, camping on pads underneath problems, putting gear under climbs, like water bottles and harnesses etc. Climbing right next to or under other climbers. I witnessed this many times in my 2hr visit, and had it happen to me at least 4 times. 6. Very small. Over crowded! 7. Music is too low. I need some beats when I'm climbing son. Not just rock either. Some chill step, and some hip hop would be nice in the mix. Overview. If you live in the tristate area. Steep Rock west has the best Boulder problems. LIC Cliffs is a better overall gym, but is pretty expensive and overcrowded. Plus it's hard to park at times. If you can make it to CT, Rock Climb Fairfield is probably the best, and there is Señor Salsa right down the road. Also the gear at Rock Climb Fairfield is much cheaper. Not bad as a climbing gym from the previous generation (one step above wooden plank boards for walls). Much like a lot of the previously established gyms from around the turn of the 21st century, Cliffs at Valhalla has rough-texture climbing walls (probably old-Rockwerx), blue padded floors, and big crash pads to pull around for landing areas. The gym's atmosphere is also very much reminescent of the growing climbing gyms: dimly-lit, chalky air, and aged climbing holds on walls erected in a warehouse. That being said however, it's a decent gym. The layout allows for a lot of the climbers to be relatively close together (boulderers and rope climbers) without overcrowding, allowing for a very social atmosphere. Simple campus board system and training area is there for those that want it (although having a system board right next to a cubby wall probably isn't the best of safety practices). The shop is also a good size, featuring a lot of merchanidse that you can't buy from REI, EMS, etc., such as Organic and Verve products. The most important factor, for me anyways, that determines if a climbing gym is worth staying is the route setting quality. I have yet to try the rop routes, but the handful of boulder routes I've tried are pretty good. Clever beta, and many that tests your movement limits. Setters do tend to over-crowd the walls a bit by putting on too many holds and tons of multi-taping, so quality may suffer in some cases, but if you pick your routes, you'll be sure to find some gems. Overall this gym isn't bad. For what you get though, $18/day for a pass is a little steep. There are similar gyms that has is similar in size and quality that charge only around $12. They also don't have separate pricing for boulderers and rope-climbers only either - it's $18 flat for everyone (not including rental gear). I'll update my review as I visit there a few more times, but so far the route setting and the friendly climbers there are enough to keep this gym on my list of neighborhood-places-to-climb. read more

My roommate and I purchased a two person Groupon for a climbing 101 class and a month of unlimited climbing time and rentals back in September of 2013. After several rescheduled classes later, we finally activated our Groupon earlier this month. Although I think that the quality of the climbing class really depends on the instructor and number of students in the class, I do think that Cliffs does a very good job of ensuring that every new climber learns the proper techniques and knows how to keep themselves safe. Since we got belay certified, we've been to Cliffs several times, both to top rope and to boulder. I like the openness of the gym, and the fact that everyone is friendly and willing to share the equipment/space. There is a broad range of climbing routes, from the most elementary to the most expert, which - as a climbing novice - I really appreciate. Also, everything that you need to climb (shoes, harness, ATC, carabiner, chalk, etc.) can all be rented, and everything seems to be sanitized/cared for properly (although the shoes do tend to smell bad after a while). Depending on how the rest of our trial month goes, I'd definitely consider a monthly membership here! read more

Stopped here over the holidays as I was visiting my sister in the area. We arrived early on a Saturday morning right at opening and the staff was ready to go and very helpful. The online waiver form made it quick and simple to get in without wasting time doing the paperwork. The gym has a nice setup for the belay test as well, using a set of ropes right by the counter to perform a quick test (in other gyms I've been to, staff had to gear up and actually go up the wall to test your fall reaction). I found the prices to be on the high end for the day passes given the size and age of the gym, but not totally out of line. I really liked the climbing areas with a large dedicated bouldering area as well as some nice walls with overhangs and arches for more interesting variation. In particular, I liked that the bouldering area had a nice selection of problems and color coded holds which made it easier to identify the routes. That said, there were only three auto-belays that I could see which could make it a bit of a challenge during heavy traffic times if you want to climb by yourself or for kids. Additionally, some of the route setting on the climbing walls had some rather large lateral deviation meaning that you could easily end up crossing under a neighboring rope and also means that you have to be careful to reposition yourself at the top of those routes before coming down (lest you start swinging widely on the way down). The wall ratings here are a bit more generous than what I'm used to as well. I found the ratings to be 1-2 grades above what I would normally encounter (e.g. what would normally be a 5.7 was rated like a 5.9 here). Makes you feel like a hero :) but may mean that the route setting is not as creative or challenging. V1-V2 in the bouldering areas were similarly overrated by a grade or two (again, based on my personal experiences), especially for the lower grades. I also liked that they were very kid friendly. The local gym I frequent does not allow bouldering for patrons under 14, which means that my 4 year old isn't allowed to boulder (and I have to wait another 10 years before she can partake in enjoying this sport with me). Here, they had no restrictions as long as you followed the rules (and common sense) and supervised your kids during their bouldering. The small handful of kid-friendly rope routes were also nice with a slight incline and plenty of large holds. However, a few more auto-belays set up for kids would be great, IMO, as it would allow kids to climb themselves. One big issue I have with this gym is that the mats are in definite need of repair or replacement. It is a serious trip hazard as the edges have curled up on many of the mats such that they are raised 4-6 inches off the ground! You can easily trip over them even casually walk through the gym. This should definitely be fixed as it's a safety hazard. All said and done, I would recommend this gym if you are in the area. read more

By far the best climbing gym I've been to. I've climbed a handful of times for leisure, mostly bouldering, throughout NYC and New Jersey. Really great value - $30 gets you all gear, 4 belayed climbs with a staff member, and unlimited auto-belays. My boyfriend and I were there for a little over two hours. Even on a crowded Sunday, the staff and service were quick, efficient, and incredibly friendly-I was helped by 4 different staff members and they were ALL terrific and encouraging. Was particularly inspired by Jasmine! You can tell they're genuinely passionate about the sport. The space is great, lots of variety and difficulty levels between the paths. Already considering joining the LIC location. read more

This was my first time rock climbing and I have to say I had a great time! I bought a Groupon for 1 month unlimited climbing, which includes a 2 hour introductory course. There were 5 of us in the class and from speaking with others they had also taken advantage of the Groupon. Our instructor Dale was very knowledgable and hands on which came in handy when we did the knot tying portion. The facilities are nice, larger than I would've thought and very clean. Everyone here, members and staff, are friendly and accommodating, a nice atmosphere for a newbie like myself. The climbing walls here are fantastic - there's a huge variety of levels and a really nice section for bouldering. Add a few auto-belays and you have a winner. My complaint is with the staff. They were severely understaffed on the Friday night I went there and the result was confusion checking in and getting equipment. I just started climbing, got my belay cert here through their 101 class. Immediately took up a fascination with Bouldering. I have been going every few days for the last month. The staff knows what they are doing and the instructors are really patient and have a great grasp of their craft. The atmosphere is friendly and most of the people will help you with anything that is on your mind about climbing even the people that don't work there. Whether you are a beginner or an expert this is a great place to be. I saw plenty of kids parties and classes being taught and they all seemed to work out well. Awesome vibe, clean facilities and great space. It's located at the end of a brick school building in the middle of nowhere (watch out for those potholes). There are several climbing walls of various difficulty, with a max height of 60 feet. It's great for groups. I've seen everything from 4-year-old birthday parties to marines training for puzzle solving under stress situations. Most of the staff are students. They're helpful when asked but a bit lazy and slow other times. Can get crowded but people are generally respectful. Though as in all exercise facilities, you have some jocks and people who don't know how to share. Be sure to reserve ahead of time for a class, because the teacher won't show up if there are no students. read more

My wife got me a "learn to climb" package almost a year ago. This place has officially replaced a conventional gym for me. The staff couldn't be more helpful, generous and genuinely stoked to have you there. Al and Roger were my two teachers and I can't say enough positive things about them. Routes are very regularly re-set, but not so fast that you don't get a chance to master the toughies. Some weeknights get crowded, but I have never had to wait in a line to get on the wall. Bouldering problems are fun and a-plenty. As an added plus, the jerky they sell at the front desk is really damn good. If I ever move I will really miss this place as it is the standard by which all other climbing gyms I go to will be compared. read more

Fun time with a knowledgeable guide. DH and I took a three hour beginner's class with two other couples. The time passed quickly, because the course was well timed. The instruction was very clear, and we had lots of practice with safety harnesses, etc. Overall, a really positive atmosphere, filled with enthusiastic climbers. We still need to go back to pass a ropes test, before being able to climb without supervision. Looking forward to it! read more

I've been to my fair share of Rock Gyms and I can say this one by far takes the cake. There's no bad vibe! Everytime I've ever gone everyone, both staff and members have been friendly and encouraging. The walls are reset rather frequently, which is a huge plus in the off season. I've never been stuck climbing or bouldering the same route because there weren't any new ones. There classes are frequent and full of great info. V.C. they fixed the potholes and I've never experienced laziness from staff or the typical gym rat hoarding the area. I'm sorry you did! C.S.They've become a bit more receptive with el musico, lol. Not bad. The belay test is more intense than the ones i've taken because it was a pop quiz along with the usual belay stuff. REMEMBER TO ANCHOR YOURSELF IF YOU ARE BELAYING! I got pulled up a foot or two (I'm short) because I clipped on the last loop. Boy did I learn the next time to clip lower down the anchoring loops. A little disappointed that they rope off a section (which can be a lot considering the size of the area) for parties. So we just rush over when we see it free. Otherwise you have to wait around. I suggest you rent the shoes if you don't own a pair. It's sad to watch people not getting the maximum grips for an ultimate climb when they're in street shoes. read more

Stopped by this place on my way to CT. I wanted to get a climbing session in and chose this place for the ratings. Overall, the gym is on the better half of ones that I've been to. The top roping is pretty serious and the boulder problems are unique. What I noticed with the boulder problems was that most of them required interesting moves that I hadn't been forced to do in a long time. I would have liked to meet the problem setter because there was clearly a lot of thought and creativity that went into setting them up. The grades were also fairly consistent which is greatly appreciated. The atmosphere was laid back and relaxed as it should be. The problems were getting slightly on the worn side but they might be up for a reset soon. They definitely weren't in a bad state yet. If I lived in that area, I'd definitely be returning to get a membership. The only down side was that there was a massive birthday party going on with screaming kids in the background. It's about time I pay my respect to this place on the internet. I'm biased, I've been employed by the Cliffs, however it is my opinion that you could not find a better team of people to run a gym. Horrible. If you want your kids to get hurt, bring em here! 'Safety expert' took five minutes to remember how to tie a figure 8 knot, and still did it wrong. Really really terrible knowledge of how to properly belay, tie knots or take general safety precautions. Also, multiple anchors were lose, but the 'safety expert' noted how they had tape on them so people would know not to use them... read more
