In my opinion this gym has the best sets in the nyc area even though it takes ages for them to reset the walls. The grading has recently been very off with v4s feeling like a v8 and v8s feeling like a v4. Overall my favorite gym in the city with lots of stuff to do for hours. read more

Cane here for the first time and signed up for the staff belay where they take you around for an hour and help you rope climb by assisted rope? Not sure if that a correct explanation but it's perfect for beginners like us. Arsenio was our staff belay person and he was great at encouraging my son and I (especially) to keep going to the top and we did on a couple walls! Staff here is nice and welcoming but we were a little confused on where to leave our things but luckily I spotted lockers in the bathrooms, no lock needed - there's instructions on how to set it up nearby! We had so much fun challenging ourselves to something new like this and will be back again, soon. Parking in Hoboken is always tricky but not too bad on a Thursday night when we came just arrive early to look for a spot. And book online! read more

This gym is awesome for climbing. The crew are nice and friendly. The walls are clean, tall, and wide. This place is generally not occupied like other gyms in NYC. It is pretty empty for the two times that I have been to, which is good to keep your distances (6ft separation) during COVID times. For a person like me who is coming from NYC to Jersey it involves quite of travel (toll) and single day entry price. If I was richer then I wouldn't mind it because it is worth it. This place has plenty of lead routes and the cave problems are traverse and challenging. I bought a Groupon for a two-hour belay class and booked it for a Sunday at 1 pm (you have to call ahead). Our instructor was Marcela and she was very knowledgeable and patient. The class had four people in total, including us, so it was nice that it was a small group. The class meets upstairs - it's also where all the kids' walls are so it can get a bit noisy, but it wasn't too bad overall. First, they show you how to tie the knot, connect yourself to the rope, and how to belay. The class lasted a little over an hour. After that, you're free to climb for the rest of the day. There's also a small gym you could use. If you didn't come with a partner, there are certain stations that have an auto-belay machine available, or you can also use their bouldering walls. Marcela told us that they change up the courses every three months, so that's a nice touch if you're a member - you'll pretty much always have a different wall each time. I had a lot of fun, even though my arms and sore (and even if little kids were zipping to the top faster than I could). Definitely am going to look into coming back for a few climbs. read more

My friend took me here on a guest pass. Waivers are required in order to climb/boulder- fill it out on an iPad at the front desk or do it online before you arrive. We usually climb at bkb, so I will make some comparisons. Gym: pretty clean, big open space with lots of windows. Kinda nice to look out at the view when you get to the top of a wall. First floor is where most of the belaying/top rope/lead climbing happens. Most of bouldering walls are located on the second floor. There's also one bouldering wall on the first floor. However, a staff member explained that there is a small gap between the wall and mat, so be careful with your fingers and toes... The second floor also has a kids' wall, beginner climber wall, and a small yoga studio (friend says it cost $5 a class for members of the gym). There's a cute climbing setup for kids (see pics) and one of the holds is even shaped like a panda! So cute! Routes: I prefer climbing, so we spent the day downstairs. I enjoyed most of the routes as a lot of them either had a small overhang or slight incline, which makes it slightly more tricky. I think they should lengthen the ropes though as I found most of the ropes to be too short. I had to stand on my tippy toes to clip in at some points! I also found it odd that anything less than 5.8 was just labeled as less than or equal to 5.8. This could be challenging for beginners that are just starting out. One of the holds on a 5.9 was loose and I forgot to mention it to the staff before I left, but they should do regular checkups to make sure that the routes are safe for climbing. Also, I found some 5.10s to be more like 5.11s, so the rating system here is definitely a little bit different than bkb. Although I did not boulder, I did notice that the bouldering walls seemed pretty short in comparison to BKB and there's no "cave" for you amazing climbers to flex your skills. Bathrooms: - downstairs: women's bathroom has 2 showers, 2-3 stalls, and 18 SMALL lockers (can fit a small backpack and maybe a jacket. A regular size duffel bag or oversize tote bag won't fit in there). I assume the men's bathroom has a similar setup. You don't need to bring your own lock as it already has a dial where you input a short combo and lock it. The dial is pretty small though and it controls the locking lever on the other side, so if you jam too much stuff into the locker you will have a really tough time opening it back up. - upstairs: spotted 2 bathrooms. Seating: Some couches and benches are located throughout the gym. There are also some large cubbies for your belongings if you prefer not to use the lockers. Crowds: None! Never had to wait for a turn to climb and it never felt crowded (unlike at bkb). Everyone was super nice and one guy even asked if it was okay to climb on a route semi-close to mine (totally fine). Price: much cheaper compared to bkb in nyc. Friend pays $800/year and you can go to ANY of the gravity vault locations in NJ. I think it was $25 for a day pass. Street parking only. read more

Highly upset due to the great expectations I had for this place. After going online to review times and pricing inclusive of filling out a waiver for my son and myself, I get to the front desk to only find out they didn't have anything available til hours later. I wasn't quite sure why since the place was basically empty. It was recommended if it's the first time, to get a one hour private session with an instructor. This isn't the first time I've been to this location, and my son has rock climbed before. It's a bummer because online you don't have the option to pick a slot. It was confirmed that "they were working on adding that feature online" (to choose a time slot) but haven't. The young lady at the front desk who was very pleasant said "In the summer they have more flexibility..." but not today as I witnessed. I tried out Gravity Vault for the first time this past weekend with a friend. We scheduled a one hour private staff belay session for late Saturday night at 9 pm after speaking with the front desk who was very helpful. We both had never rock climbed before and our instructor made us feel very comfortable, safe, and encouraged throughout the hour. The facility provided the harness, climbing shoes, and chalk for our hands. The bathrooms have free lockers where you can store your belongings. We each completed about 6 climbs in the hour before we were too exhausted to do any more. It was a perfect time to go since it was fairly empty. I would definitely consider stopping in for another hour session in the future - once I'm no longer sore! You will definitely feel sore for a few days afterwards. read more

[This review is solely based on our experience having our kids' birthday party here.] We booked about two months in advance over the phone and the person helping us was really cool and helpful. A few days before the party we find out it was Gravity Vault's year anniversary and things might be a bit too hectic and now we were nervous. We head in Sunday afternoon and yes, the place is absolutely booming with adrenaline junkies and fitness freaks and... (pretty much every type of person except lazy slobs like myself) Justin - our team leader - took charge and couldn't have been more professional, efficient and just cool as hell (does that expression even make any sense?!). Our party ventured upstairs to the smaller walls and for the next 90 minutes or so Justin and his co-pilot, Alex, kept things moving and interesting with different walls, challenges, tug of wars (it's hard to root for a side to win when your twins are on opposite sides!), you name it. The whole time you're looking around and you see the adults having a blast scaling the various walls, working out, and probably daydreaming about entering a future season of Ultimate Beastmaster or American Ninja Warrior. Now the kids wash their hands and head down into the party room for a rendition of "Happy Birthday" (no future American Idol contestants here, I'm afraid), pizza (which was good, wherever they got it from), cake, all that stuff. The two hours flew by and by the time we were leaving the party room was spotless and ready for the next special occasion. We had a blast as did our kids and I think most of their friends did as well. (A few kids never did warm up to climbing but I think they still dug the party overall.) This facility is big. It's clean. All the staff we dealt with couldn't have been cooler. (Even the complimentary t-shirt was much cooler than some we've gotten from other places we had parties at in the past.) Love this place! My son's class had a field trip here and they absolutely loved it. I knew I had to try this place for myself when my bros and nephews came over. So my nephews and son range from 5 - 10 and they all absolutely LOVED this place. The instructors, Brett and George, were super professional and made this group of newbies feel super comfortable. We scaled those walls like a Spiderman. We are so down to come back. My bros immediately looked up Gravity Vaults near them. Who knows, if my boy really takes to it, maybe he'll sign up for lessons, join the team... and eventually make it to the Olympics (yes, rock climbing is an Olympic event now!) Oh yes, I did a few climbs and found it to be fun and challenging. I'm a semi-fit weekend warrior so this is doable. But the true fun is going as a group and cheering everyone on. I've been to the Gravity Vault location in Upper Saddle River, so I was happy to see another location open up! It was my boyfriend's first time rock climbing, so it was important we went to a gym that I knew I could count on. We came on a Saturday afternoon and it was packed with various groups and birthday parties in addition to your usual climbers. Be sure to fill out the waiver online before you come to expedite your check in time. After paying for our day pass, we were quickly fitted for our climbing shoes and given harnesses. Since I was belay certified at my college's rock gym, I asked one of the staff members to belay check me. The staff was very friendly and was happy to give me the thumbs up. The facility itself has two floors - the first floor being a little more compact, but the second floor has a great 360 bouldering rock and other top rope options. There were various locker and cubby options for you to place your things in. After a couple hours of climbing, we were exhausted and happily returned the equipment we rented. $25 for a day pass $5 for shoe rental *fill out waiver online to save yourself some time upon arrival* As of 1/7/18, there were no locker rooms, only cubbies to store your belongings to (and even then that was limited). Belaying walls located on the first floor, with one vertical bouldering wall, bouldering walls located on the second floor. Second floor has couches and tables for you to leave your stuff during your climb. The bouldering walls on the second floor are mostly angled, so not pin straight; also has walls to allow you to top-out on (climb over the top). Friendly staff - first timers will have to go through a mandatory tour. There is a very basic gym on the second floor, with one treadmill, one elliptical, 6 medicine balls, 6 kettlebells, and more cubbies. Perhaps it's because I've climbed at LIC Cliffs and BKBQB but I was very confused with their starting and ending positions. I am use to the tapes on the boulders to signal where my hands should start (either two tape strips on the same boulder to signal that both hands should start here, or a strip of tapes on two different boulders to signal where my hands should start), and where they should end (two tapes on the ending boulder). I just found the whole idea of "reading the tag" a bit odd - the tag attached to the beginning boulder contains information on how they climb is supposed to go. read more

For my first rock climbing and bouldering experience in about the past 16 years, I loved this place! I came with a few friends who really love rock climbing, and I'll be sure to continue on practicing after this first experience. I came here on a Friday night, and was immediately overwhelmed by the amount of top rope and bouldering courses in the gym. There really is something for everyone here. I was able to complete several V0 and V2 bouldering courses, and almost completed a moderate top rope course. I initially feared falling with no harness in bouldering; however, after my first fall on my back, I was totally fine! Would I come back? Yes!! Albeit, I wish the prices were cheaper. That would probably be only negative about this place. $39.73 for a Friday night admission with Gear, and it wasn't even that busy then. I'm hoping Gravity Vault does more deals!! read more

I have come here several times since my bf and a few friends have annual memberships. One thing that stood out to me immediately was the community the members have built. It's a great environment and place for everyone from beginners to more committed climbers to practice the sport. I also really love that they have incorporated yoga into this gym. I have attended a couple classes, and enjoyed the different instructors. Special shout-out to Beatriz! The facility and its bathrooms are kept clean, which is always a plus. It definitely helps that it's a newer gym, so it is also aesthetically modern. I will say that it is fairly pricey, and unfortunately there aren't many deals. Hopefully the location is able to partake in some deals like the Chatham location! All in all, definitely a great and different way to work out. Highly recommend bringing along friends! read more

I took my son to a friend's bday here. We checked in and filled out/signed the waiver. There were 4 kids and parents. The kids were given shoes and climbing belts. My son climbed once, of course with the help of that employee holding him with a rope and pulley system. He went up and came down. Then his friends took their turns. Then it was my son's turn again and he went up. This time though, when he was approximately 20ft up in the wall, he asked to be taken down. Then everyone tried to encourage him to go little higher to the top, but he was hesitant. He said he wanted to come down. The employee/instructor asked him to hold the rope with both hands to get him down. Yet, at that moment he couldn't do it. He was holding the rope with one hand and the wall with the other. You could see him trying but he froze basically. I asked the instructor to take him down. She told me that my son has to hold the rope with both hands. I tried to tell my son from the bottom, but he couldn't do it because he was too afraid and froze. I asked the instructor to let him down inch-by-inch if she needs to, because at this time, he started crying immensely out of fear. The instructor refused. I told her to take him down at least 5 times and she refused to do so every time, because my son couldn't grab the rope with both hands. By this time, he was very scared and crying like crazy. I actually had to personally climb up myself to support him and take him down. I was not even strapped, but had to do something so I went up. When I was 20' up there, no one else came to help or even tried to help him. I got him down and of course by this time, I was furious. I started yelling at the instructor, asking how she can refuse to take him down. When I was up on the wall trying to get my son down, one of the mothers had to go down to call for help. The instructor had no way of communicating with colleagues. Two guys came but were basically staring at us on the wall, from the bottom. Initially, none of the three employees were apologetic at all. One of the parents we were with had to point out to the employees that it had been 20 minutes and no one yet apologized to my son or us. My problem with the experience: My son was really mistreated and the instructor was completely useless, negligent and ignorant and did nothing about the fact that my son was stranded up there crying frantically with fear. I personally had to climb up to get him. My son was even crying when we came back home hours later, saying he was terrified. There were no introductory instructions/videos/presentation overview in regards to what the 5-year-old first-timers should be expecting or what the process is like, as in what needs to be done to climb up and come down. Absolutely nothing. When my son was stranded up there and I asked the instructor to take him down at least 5 times, she did not do anything. These are 5-year-old kids. There were no back-up instructors to call in case of an emergency like this. The only instructor attenting this birthday was completely useless, suggesting to me that she was either not trained for a situation like this or even worse chose not to do anything about it. She did not have like a walkie-talkie to call for back up. When I was climbing up to help my son, one of his friend's mother had to go down to get someone else for help. They were basically standing by idly as well. After I was able to get him down, they were not apologizing to my son or to me whatsoever. Instead, one his friends mother had to remind them that it has been 20 minutes and they still did NOT say a simple sorry. It was only after one of the friend's mothers told them that she will be writing about this on Hoboken Mother blogs, Google, Yelp etc, that they changed their approach and started to apologize. The entire experience was immensely scary for my child. He was scared for his safety. In an analogy, I felt like the lifeguard was not jumping in a pool to help someone, but instead was saying hold the rope and I will pull you in. My son is one of the most courageous, self confident and easy going 5-year-old boys you could ever meet and I have never seen him like this. He did indoor skydiving like 6 weeks ago and had great fun. The establishment either lacks the safety policies necessary to handle situations like this or they failed miserably to apply the safety measures they have, both during and after the situation occurred. I have the entire thing on video. It's too large to post, but I wish I could post it here for people to see. I can only do three photos. The so-called instructor, the lady. There was some delay in getting the wall climbing activity going but the folks in GV were very responsive and made up for it later. I've been a climber for 4 or 5 years now, and I was very excited to see that a gym was opening up where I live. Let's start with the good, and move on to the less good: Pros: A great gym for beginners. Clean modern facility, friendly staff. Lots of easy routes and boulders. Rope walls are very high, and there are several auto belay stations. There is a moonboard! Becoming a must-have for top of the line gyms. A small training area with weights, cardio equipment, foam rollers, and yoga mats. Staff is friendly and upbeat. Cons: Bouldering walls are very short, maybe 8 feet. There's no wall with a long overhang. There's a short "cave" that overhangs for two or three moves, and a wall that's maybe 5 ft wide and is on a 30 degree overhang. No 45, no 60 degree wall. There's really nothing anyone can do about that now, but it is disappointing. There's no where to tie the top roping ropes off to if you are leading. It's not fun to have them hitting your head and back while you climb lead. Maybe get some sandbags like BKB or Cliffs. The training: campus board jugs stop after 6, instead of going to 9 or 10. Can you get a few more? Next, there is not a single hang board in the gym. A hang board is arguably the most vital and basic piece of equipment for training. Also a rice bucket would be very helpful (and it's cheap!) for climbers with finger injuries. Route setting on ropes is bad, and the bouldering setting is even worse. Both rope routes and bouldering problems: force your body into unnatural positions, show careless foot chip placement, usually a lot of easy moves then one hard move, are very unimaginative and uninspired, are not unique, show lack of focus on technique and good movement. The setting is under the quality of NJ rock gym, and doesn't even register on the same scale as the Cliffs in LIC, BKB Gowanus, Steep Rock East or West, or GP81. Setting is a very hard job, maybe the staff can take a few trips to those gyms (especially GP81) for some inspiration, or maybe try infusing some new setters into the group. The bouldering tagging system is lacking and doesn't mark our two hand starts. Furthermore, the finishing holds are pretty random, probably because they want you to top out. But few climbers actually top out (it feels very sketchy), not even the staff recommend topping out. There are many climbers who would find it more pleasing if the setters set the problems with a specific finishing hold in mind. In summary, this is a great beginner gym. Climbers with experience in other gyms, especially NYC gyms, may find it disappointing. The training area here is not where is should be, but has much potential and can be remedied with a few simple and cheap additions. The setting is the largest problem, and I expect it will be the hardest to solve. I'm rooting for you. I want the gym in my town to be stellar. I want it to be a place where I can get stronger. I've given this place a few chances, but I have been disappointed each time. The routes are not clearly marked/graded, holds that were broken were taped over as opposed to removed (seems like a liability), and they had the same bouldering routes when I went 3 months apart. Additionally, every time I've been and they've had a camp going on, their employees have not made an effort to teach the kids proper climbing etiquette. I was bouldering and kids were running underneath me while the staff watched. The place has a lot of potential, but is not being run well. I suggest climbing elsewhere. read more

This place was DOPE! I think it's perfect for an active date night or just something different to do with friends! Learned a lot about how challenging it is to do bouldering. The staff was so knowledgeable and helpful. There was a nice young lady that made sure we knew exactly how to start and end a climb. If you are afraid of heights, this is not the place for you lol. Update: I've been a member now for over a year and continually experiencing truly poor customer service. It might be fine for those coming for one day here and there, but for a gym that is attempting to expand their services, they have truly awful communication with their members. Classes and events are cancelled without notification, or the class itself is not at all as advertised. No matter how nice one or two people behind the desk can be, it doesn't make up for the lack of basic customer service. If you have access to another gym, give that one a try. read more
