It has all…read morethe usual characteristics - a few cheap cheap bars and eateries - as well as a shop, ATM and...a Subway! My friends from other universities were always jealous of that Subway. It was far too handy for me and my fast-food cravings. I spent much of my time at Glasgow uni here - during the day at least. The 'reading room' is perfect for a relaxing cup of coffee on those huge couches or a chat with friends. At night time though it was somewhere I tended to avoid - not so much due to the tackiness of being a student's union but the often arrogant rugby guys and friends who ruined the fun atmosphere. The building itself, like much of Glasgow University, is stunning to look at.

It has loads of bars and two separate night clubs, a large debating chamber which hosts comedy and live acts and a rather grotty beer garden. Upstairs it has amazing snooker tables and a reading room. As unions go this one is excellent in terms of facilities. The prices are also very good. Two problems, you have to be a student (when it suits them to be honest usually when they are busy) and quite often the places is overrun with arrogant ignorant rugby goers who make for terrible chat. I think that it is best for day time drinking.

Most of the other bars within a mile radius of this joint seem to close down - perhaps it's to do with how clogged up this road is with traffic, or the fact that the sparse bars this area has to offer seem squashed and exposed at the bottom of flats the 80s produced. For all these reasons, Three Craws is like a spacious and family orientated ranch compared to that. It's part of a chain so expect the standard pub fayre - fish and chips, bangers and mash, two for £8 pound deals...I used to eat in here quite a lot with my ex's family and we always enjoyed the food. It was stodgy and wholesome. Nevertheless, we had the same complaint as Gillian did with bar staff. They were always ice cold and not too eager to help when things went wrong with the orders...which they had a tendency to. We had a running joke that everytime we visited the Three Craws, the drink we wanted to order wouldn't be available. Towards the end of our visits there, it was not so much a joke than a reason not to return. I don;t know if it was to do with the fact we visited on Sundays (which was quiz night at the time) but my ex's dad had various grumbles about the poor selection of ales. Rather than encourage the staff to amend the situation, they often seemed irate that we were dissatisfied. I work in customer service and the last thing you want is a complaint but we were very mild mannered and understanding of the whole thing, so to be treated by staff the way customers can often be rude to you at the other end, it's just gets my goat. It wasn't the end of the world that we couldn't always get decent beer or ales on tap, but a bit more sympathy would've been nice. This was a while ago now so the staff have no doubt changed but certainly when we visited the staff had a knack of blowing a chill into the air of an otherwise cosy, laid back pub. Hopefully something's been changed on that front because we otherwise have no complaints!

It's decked out in gorgeous floral wallpaper and delightfully comfortable armchairs. It also boasts barmen dressed immaculately in dark suits (which, incidentally, provides a nice bit of eye candy for us ladies....) Although slightly painfully expensive (cocktails start from around £7) you will occasionally find a couple of special deals. If you have a look round the bar you'll usually find some special menus which have a couple of slightly cheaper cocktails on (think £4 or £5). Despite the price, the cocktails here are to die for. You just have to make them last for quite a while....

Yet again I was going to be a young man going into an old man's pubin, where you always get the feeling that you are something of an interloper. Especially so on this occasion, when I went through the doorway and an elderly man having a smoke outside muttered something under his breath at me, much like a big dog guarding its territory. But you should never judge a book by its cover. Stumps does have the usual kind of crowd and traditional look to it, but I was taken by surprise to hear Metallica blasting from the jukebox as soon as I walked in the door. As they are one of my favourite bands I took an instant shine to this place. The jukebox was actually very much the same kind you see in a Scream pub, with a massive choice of songs - very unusual for a pub like this but certainly very welcome. It felt great to be able to buy a pint, put on the Who on the jukebox and then kick back and relax. It felt quite warm inside too, even though it was a bitterly cold day in January. If only all pubs felt as warm inside - you get the feeling a lot of them just don't bother with the heating in order to save money. There was two televisions on in the pub which were showing different channels - one was Sky Sports 1 and the other Sky Sports News. There is also some very interesting paintings on the wall, some of Glasgow-related subjects like the subway and some cricket-related. It is a cricket-themed place as attested to by its name and its proximity to the local cricket club. Despite being one of the smallest local pubs, Stumps is definitely not as run of the mill as I expected it to be. The pints are quite cheap too, so I would definitely recommend it above most of the other pubs in the area.

Surly bar staff and an odd atmosphere prevailed during my one and only ever visit to the valley of the living dead. I couldn't wait to finish my drink and get my sorry ass out of there before any of the clientele approached me. I am nearly seven feet tall and built like the Hulk's big brother yet I felt uncomfortable in that excrement aperture of a place. In time the occupants may evolve into sub-humans but until then I would say it's best avoided.

Your wouldn't know the vibe from the outside of the building. Once inside, your surrounded by a selections of gastropub/restaurant. It has that outside feel but your inside. The cocktails lost, great selection. Friendly staff. Food wise, didn't get anything to much on as we were just on a drinking binge. The surrounding pub had their fare share of food and drinks as well. You'll have your selection of burgers, pub food, and so on. Definitely would come back to this place and for sure will give the other gastropub a try. Love the cool vibe and outdoor feel even though your inside. Perfect shield from Scottish rain if your needing to feel like your outside.

Despite it's upmarket reputation, I've always found the merchant city to have more of a "neds with…read moremoney" feel, with venues like Arta crawling with foul mouthed 40 somethings in ill fitting suits, waving their fistfuls of tenners. Thankfully, that isn't the case here, as the Metropolitan is exactly as you'd imagine it to be from it's name. sleek, shiny, shallow, but with a brilliant cocktail list and a buzzy enough atmosphere, even if it is often full of people chattering about property prices. The cocktail list is huge and unusual, thankfully bereft of french martinis, and the staff were very friendly on our visit. It's by no means cheap, but definitely a pleasant way to spend an evening.

We were booked as a band for a night of music in Sweeney's, playing alongside some other local…read moreacts. The night itself wasn't organised by the bar but someone outwith who hosts a regular music showcase. The evening felt very uorganised, and although, little of this is down to Sweeney's, the staff were of little help. We arrived early. The decor is eclectic, the pub definitely has a personal touch. I really liked the musical and instrument motifs by the stage area. There's also some quirky signs by the bar. Although, it did all a bit funky and mismatched to me. When we walked in, instruments in hand, we made our way from one half of the bar to the other; one which has the stage. Although the bar staff in the first room had explained we'd to head through to the second, nobody welcomed us or explained what would be happening when we got there. Other than a heckle from some folks at a table and a 'What will you be playing for us?!', we were left to it. We took a seat and, noticing no other instrument-in-hand folks, wandered exactly what the plan was. So we ordered drinks, and then I introduced myself and the band. At this point, more musicians were in the bar. Phew! The barman explained that the person who runs the night was running late. Understandably not their fault, what could they do? But then time went on and on. And there was no update from the bar. We just waited and waited. We'd presumed we were first since it had been listed that way without a mention of running times but after waiting till after the night should have begun (when the organiser finally arrived), we found out we were second. By this point, we just wanted to play; play and go home. In addition, the monitor mix wasn't great and the organiser had mistakenly thought there was two of us, so Sweeney's only paid two of us for performing. The general feeling was that there's venues out there doing amazing things for local music. The best and memorable gigs for us have had great hosts behind them. We just didn't feel this way about Sweeney's, and that's a pity.
