Rented lockers are cheap enough ($25 a semester), or you can just use a day locker if you'd like. I love that I can come in, get my 20 minute run on, do weights for 20 minutes, and be back out, showered, and dressed in an hour. Delightful. The track is bizarrely shaped and a bit odd, but the treadmills have the added effect of playing a plethora of morning shows--since I started working out there, I watched Obama pick his cabinet, Blagojevich self-destruct, some of the G20, and all of the inanity that is nearly any episode of the View. (Yeah, I know--but I'm a captive audience!) The pool is nice, the locker room clean, and the place a great spot. If you time it just right, you can then head to Bevier Cafe for lunch after--WIN-WIN.

Is it wrong of me to say how much I miss you, considering that when I had you, I just used you? I was there when WIMPE closed, and you opened up, shiny, and brand new. You were the most modern thing I'd ever seen on campus. Large...airy...imposing. I planned events for my RSOs here. We needed sporty fun, and you delivered, with your large multipurpose gyms. I wanted a structured way to lose weight, and you gave me not just an entire floor of fitness equipment, and fitness classes, you let me into your incredibly fun pool, and let me swish down your slides in joy. Oh happy days.... And as if that wasn't enough love from any one gym, one of your racquetball courts converted into a squash court. I spent many sweaty early am hours here, challenging my opponents with my ability to hit a small rubber ball. A rubber ball that has left many marks on you, my love, and yet, you, always patient, endlessly forgiving, never complained. And at the end of the day, when I'd worked up myself into exhaustion and warm glows, you welcomed me graciously into your spacious changing rooms and the miles of lockers and showers within. I'd groom myself into presentableness, and leave, without a second look at you. If only I knew then what I know now, dear Circe. That the city had nothing like you. That the city's clubs were old and worn, and nowhere as beautiful as you. Perhaps then, my darling, I would've been more appreciative of you. Maybe I would've realized how much I loved you. Alas, now, it is too late. I move to New York soon, and our little post graduate meetings must come to an end. CU Jiu Jitsu was NOT the only gym that I called, but they WERE the one who called me back! Coach Mike was super nice and welcomed me to come in and take a FREE trial class even though it was obvious I was not going to sign-up, and he even refused to allow me to pay for the class à la carte. Thank you, CU Jiu Jitsu! My experience was great! I was the odd man out as this gym focuses on sport jiujitsu whereas Gracie Jiujitsu is much more focused on the Self Defense aspect of Jiujitsu. At the time I only had the Gracie Combatives belt, which is an intermediate belt before Blue, earned before being introduced to rolling. Many of the students at CU Jiu Jitsu were curious about my odd-looking belt, and I was honored to tell them all about Gracie Jiu Jitsu, but this review is not about that. My visit to CU Jiu Jitsu happened towards the end of the pandemic and vaccinations were plentiful. The school continued to follow best practices limiting access to the facility and scanning temperatures upon entry. The head instructor, Professor James, greeted me. He was nice and welcoming. With paperwork behind us and a quick tour of the facility, away I went to the locker rooms. The locker room has showers and plenty of lockers. Don't forget to bring shower shoes so you don't contaminate the mats! The warm-up started on time. I think there were 12-15 people in the JiuJitsu class, with many of them staying for the wrestling class afterward. The warm-up was typical grappling school type of warm-up, but the instructor did have it written on a board and announced a goal of completing it in X minutes which added a nice challenge to it. After that, a couple of techniques were demonstrated and drilled. The class had many colored belts in it from Black to white. After the technique portion, we squeezed in a couple rounds of rolling. Thank you to my partners Kenny (Blue belt) and Coach Fabio (Brown Belt). This was my first time cross-training at another gym/school. I highly recommend it, and I recommend you checking out CU Jiu Jitsu if you are in the area. Thank you to all the Instructors and students who made my experience enjoyable and welcoming! Feedback: We cannot all be perfect all the time. This is constructive feedback and by no means do I have any grievance. With that said, I'm not sure how kid friendly the adult classes are. One student's children were doing what kids do. They were addressed as "{student}'s kids get off the rolled-up mats!" But I don't think the kids were used to being addressed that way, nor did they pickup on the fact that THEY were the ones playing on the rolled-up mats. So the command was shouted out a few more times before they got the hint. It was just a brief distraction that may have been unnecessary or handled differently.

Sholem provided the perfect spot for this morning's swim! While I can't speak to this facility during a busier time, I can speak to my experience in the pools earlier hours. I was able to walk up to their admission desk and, after talking briefly with the friendly desk worker, I paid my $6 to swim and headed into the locker room. During my swim, there was never more than 4 people in the pool and I was able to swim in one of their 3 lanes for most of my swim. Additionally, while the air was a little chilly this morning, the pool temperature was perfect! I thoroughly enjoyed my swim and would recommend this spot to anyone looking. I also eyed a pretty awesome lazy river that I'd like to take a few laps through if I find myself itching to swim again before I head back to St. Louis!

I've since done Advanced Open Water, Computer Nitrox, Rescue, Visual Inspection, and Equipment Specialist with Midwest Scuba Center; I'm currently working towards Divemaster. I traveled with the shop to Dominica, Florida, and Indonesia. All of them were blasts. I saw pristine marine biota unmatched by anything you'd imagine. We also enjoyed many different cuisines across the spectrum. As a Divemaster in training, I experienced the backstage of scuba diving. Every minute a diver enjoys means two minutes of hard labor for the staff. I can't stress enough how increasingly appreciative I've become since starting Divemaster. I've become good friends with a lot of the staff. Alex is the owner of Midwest Scuba Center, and as opposed to Brad, the previous owner, he is an incredibly amiable guy; just like him are Jesse, Pete, Rick, Bill, John... I kept coming back day to day to the shop to hang out and to help out. I enjoy being around those people. I can't imagine what my life for the past two years would look like if I decided not to walk in that day. I've established connections with excellent people from all over the world through scuba. It is a big escape from the vicissitudes of life. I encourage everyone to give it a shot. You may not be as into it as I am, but you will never regret it.
