I've been seeing Brittany T here since she moved here post lockdown. Brittany is an amazing stylist with years of experience. We always have a good chat about what I want and how we can make that work for my hair. She checks in consistently through the service to make sure we're on the right track and she's just the sweetest person ever. The space is a beautiful, brightly lit, open floor plan. This makes maneuvering through the place super easy, but sometimes it can get pretty loud when it's busy (which seems to be all the time). Staff is very friendly and happy to help. Booked my first appointment with STEPHANIE Kinda nervous going in due to the fact that I moved here out to state and someone was going to take over my coloring. But WOW she did a beautiful job she corrected my previous color done at a different salon in St Paul. The reason I come here is because I followed my hair stylist who used to work at Aveda. I've been going to her for about 10 years since she cuts fabulous layers for long hair. She's reliable and always on time so I never have to wait too long when I arrive at the salon. If you find the right stylist this place is great! I found Qiao on Instagram (@qiaohair); his posts kept showing up on my Explore Page. After browsing through his 700 photos and stalking who all followed him (5k+ followers) I made the leap of faith and booked an appointment. You've been warned, book as soon as you can because he's always booked at least a month out! Long story short: he keeps it real! And I value that in anyone that I have a relationship with even if you're my colorist. Yup, finally got my hair cut and colored by Qiao and it was well worth the wait (he's always booked but will fit you in) and drive. I found out about Qiao from one of my friends who had her hair done and posted a picture on Facebook. I asked and She sent me to Qiao's Instagram page. Like others, I stalked his photos for months before pulling the trigger. It's been 2 weeks since my hair has been transformed to, I'm LOVING it and It takes 3 mins to fix my hair in the morning now (that's how you know you have a great cut). Just brush it thru and I'm done. I have been getting complements from everyone. Prices are very reasonable especially considering his skill level, his intuition for what looks good on different people, and attention to detail. When I walked in I had no clue what I really wanted, but I knew what I didn't want. We talked for 10 mins. Everyone has their own preference...I told Qiao that I wanted something that was low maintenance, lively, a bit of texture yet still full, and a step up from classic (I don't do trends). I also am a believer that after you spend money on your hair that it should make your life easier...you shouldn't have to spend 30 mins curling, flat iron, or use a million products to make it look good. I also showed him a few pictures to give him an idea of what I liked. From there on he took over, explained everything that he was doing, and worked his magic. read more

Scheduled an appointment for the first time and was excited to go in yesterday, nice touch with the reminder texts. Got there (waited in my car and texted "I'm here") but the message failed twice. So I called, and it went to voicemail, where the message said they were CLOSED due to a pipe flooding the salon and "your stylist will be in contact with you to reschedule." Needless to say, no one had contacted me. I had no idea they were closed. It was posted on their Facebook, but I don't use facebook. Why are your appointment reminders on if you're closed for business? Not a great first impression. I made an appointment last minute at another salon and got in today with an awesome stylist. Was going to try and reschedule, I understand it's no ones fault other than the weather that the salon flooded. But maybe check that you contacted ALL appointment holders next time so they don't waste their time driving there and back home disappointed. read more

Debbie was very friendly and did a great job. The place was clean and well-kept and the location was convenient. I got a very relaxing shampoo and I ended up loving my cut and color. I wasn't sure at first but after I went home and washed it I decided that it's excellent. I wanted to try this place out and had no idea whether it would be good or not. They gave me Amy J. as my stylist. I thought she was great! The space is really nice, even a little fancy, but the staff is very relaxed and down to earth. It turned out that Amy and I grew up about a mile apart so we had a good time reminiscing about Maple Grove back in the day. I really liked my cut and color. I was probably being a difficult client...I didn't have a picture but I had a strong idea of what I wanted. Amy really got it and I haven't been this happy about a cut in a long time. Two other things I'll mention which might be totally weird to me: -I really appreciate when your hair stylist has like a sixth sense about when to chat with you and when not to. I've actually not gone back to stylists in the past because they were too chatty. Amy was excellent about giving me some quiet magazine time but was also really fun to talk to. -I've never noticed this about another stylist to comment about it, and it maybe sounds creepy....? But, Amy was super gentle and relaxing. Usually when I get foils in, its not a fun experience. But the color didn't have any bad smell and I was almost falling asleep during the process. I guess if you have a sensitive head then you should definitely go see her! The cost for cut and full foils and styling was $160 which is pretty costly but not insanity. I would go see Amy again for sure. I don't know about the other hair places in Maple Grove, but this place is really convenient with lots of parking in the back. Seemed like they did nails and hair removal and stuff there too. read more

This was my third visit to the maple grove location, and in the past I have had very good experiences. Today I had an appointment for 2:45, we started after 3 which I completely understand if the stylist was taking the time to perfect the client before me. My hair was cut dry and wonky after being in a ponytail all morning and then washed afterwards. The ends were not looked over again or cleaned up after being blown dry. I noticed a couple longer pieces before I left the chair and had her trim them. My entire appointment today was just over 20 minutes and in the past has been about an hour. Once I got to the gym and put my hair in a ponytail I noticed many pieces that had been missed (I had 2.5-3 inches cut off) I stopped by at 6pm (3 hours later) to see if my stylist would be able to do a quick tidying up of the ends but she had left after my appointment for the day. Completely understandable. I inquired if any other stylist would be able to help me as I have a funeral tomorrow afternoon and the response I got was that I would have to be charged again to see someone different because "each stylist does their own thing." There are open for 3 more hours tonight and not one stylist was willing to fix another team members mistake. I'm completely dissatisfied that the hair district company does not stand behind their employees and care if their clients are happy with their services. I will not be returning or recommending the Hair District to any friends or family. Even Great clips is more willing to fix their mistakes at a fraction of the cost. read more

I made an appointment for 7:00 and I called and confirmed the time 30 minutes before the appt. When I got there the hair dresser wasn't ready and said to come back in 45 minutes, so I did, and she wasn't ready for another 40 minutes. When we got to my hair I told her I wanted lowlights and her and another hairdresser convinced me to get highlights and lowlights. I thought it would look dope because she said she would put in a dark honey blonde for highlights because my hair is medium brown. It was straight up bleach stripes and the funniest thing was I didn't even come in for highlights! My hair looked so trashy I had to dye it myself. What to know about the hair district is because the stylists rent out the chairs in the salon, they only have their own supplies to work with. I doubt she had a dark honey blonde color so she probably used a lighter color and crossed her fingers. Unless you know someone, do not go here! read more

I found Prairie after searching for over a decade for a stylist I can trust and I have say I am so pleased. I have thick coarse hair and she gave me a cut that makes my hair manageable and stylish. I was so unhappy with this place. 3 failed hairstyles. I made reservation a month in advance for hair styling appointments for my grandmother, my mother, and myself. We were attending a wedding locally from out of state. When I made the appointments I told them my grandmother will need a wet set and I would like finger waves. I was told by the receptionist that she was not sure about the finger waves but if the stylist could not do them she would call me and let me know. I did not receive a phone call saying they could not be done. I was told up front that up do's cost up to $75.00 which would be fine if any of us were satisfied. When the three of us arrived we were all taken by our own stylists. My mother asked her stylist to wash her hair to which the stylist replied "We don't have time" and "dirty hair styles better". When you have super oily hair you have to wash it every day. The stylist was done in about 15 minutes and charged $75 to pin up half and curl the bottom. So no time to wash hair, and $75.00 for 15 minutes of her time. The curl fell out about 2 hours later and my Mother washed and re-styled her hair herself. My grandmother brought her stylist over to me so I could explain what she wanted. I told the stylist that she needed a wet set curl. The stylist took her back to her chair and my Grandmother was then told they do not do wet sets. If they told me this on the phone I would have had her go somewhere else. If they told me that when I was explaining what she wanted, I would have taken her somewhere else. Instead the stylist tried to curl it and it looked so bad my 81 year old grandmother was almost crying. I asked my stylist if the salon two doors down did wet sets and she told me that they do not and that most stylists have not had to do a wet set since school. After I explained that I was not told they do not do wet sets I was charged $20.00. I told my mother to call the salon on the corner and she booked my grandmother for a wet set at Aveda which she was very so very happy with. I was asked by my stylist what I would like for my hair and when I said finger waves I was told she couldn't do them. I said I would like 30's glamour then like S waves. She started heating up the curling iron and I asked if she could wash my hair to which she told me "Dirty hair styles better" I told her my hair gets oily and I have to wash it every day. So she washed and dried it and curled my hair and put two pins in the front. It looked nothing like I asked for. My hair did not even hold up 2 hours and one of the pins fell out into my coffee an hour after getting my hair styled. I also went back to the hotel to wash out and style my hair. I was charged $60.00. I am thinking this place may be better for cut and colors but as far as hair styling I would have to say it was an overall awful experience for all three of us. I attended cosmetology school when I was younger and I know they teach wet sets and finger waves. If you do not want to do them just say so. Knowing that my 81 year old grandmother was almost in tears and told me that she "just wants to look good in the wedding photos" broke my heart. When we go back in May for another wedding none of us will be having our hair styled here. read more

Kaylan is an absolute gem. I have been seeing her for cuts and colors for nearly three years, and my mom and brother have been going even longer. I have thick hair with a lot of grey (if left unattended), and I leave every time feeling absolutely amazing. Kaylan is particularly great at giving me a style that works for me every day without a lot of fussing. She does the same for my mom, who has a very cute, short hair cut with finer hair. Kaylan makes sure the style works for our real lives--not just when we are in a stylist's chair. That alone is well worth the five-star review. But here's the real reason I wanted to write this review: she is absolutely amazing with my older brother, who has autism. She understands him and is kind to him, and she gives him a great hair cut. It's hard for a guy like my brother to have a lot of normal, everyday experiences. Kaylan treats him with such kindness and respect. Our family adores her; we don't live anywhere near Maple Grove but it is well worth the trip to see Kaylan. While I haven't worked with any of the other stylists at The Hair District, everyone seems so friendly (especially the reception staff) and the place always seems to be full of regular customers. I know there's at least one stylist on staff who specializes in unusual colorings, so ask the receptionist for a referral if you want a non-traditional color. They carry several different product lines. The decor is fun. I'm a fan. read more
