I really wanted to like this place - TJ truly is sweet Korean agashi (auntie). Unfortunately, personality doesn't mean skill. Layered long angled bob, with wake-up/shower-and-go layers for zero daily maintenance. My biannual cut. Thick, Asian hair. The carefree personality of beachy tresses in harmony with my natural waves was nowhere to be found in the edgy punk rock cut I left with. Given my modeling shoot next week, I'm throwing time and money into wig-shopping tomorrow. UNPRODUCTIVE CHATTER TJ is warm and chatty. Which is great - long as we're productive. Twice, TJ stopped cutting for at least 10 minutes each time - I checked my phone - with comb and scissors in hand in becoming animated with our topics of politics, society, culture, language, human behavior, and my travels through Asia. I'd asked when her next cut was - an hour and 15 minutes later - to ensure this did not interfere with her work on my hair. In the end, it still did, especially after her noon male barbercut appointment showed up 50 minutes early. CLARITY NOT SOUGHT We know TJ doesn't speak English well. That's why questions and photos exist. I came prepared with a Pinterest folder with dozens of photos. She glanced over my shoulder at the first few without looking through the folder, taking the phone to examine the hairstyles, or ask what I liked about the similar but different styles - just honed in on the single one that shared some characteristics with a haircut on her Yelp photo album. In walking out with a sister cut to that haircut she'd given, I believe TJ is a one-trick pony. Especially given her becoming clearly flustered as time went on. Length was never discussed, and my example photos were definitely longer than what I left with. I learned the hard way in 7th grade that my hair cannot be cut past a certain length without both sides veering to the left - half-bob, half-flip - so seeing how this cut sits after washing it again will be interesting. BANG - IN YOUR FACE! TJ's consideration of wisps to frame my face for ponytails was sweet - until she cut the middle length so short that it took center stage with a narrow, defined V bang that demands to sit front and center on my forehead no matter how I still try to push it off to the side. Do a deep part as I typically would, and that shortened lock is a ridiculous wave that hovers in midair. The remaining wisps she gave me created random alfalfa strands sticking up at will. Low maintenance? What a joke! Not to mention that I never asked for bangs, nor were they in the many example photos that I left on my phone the entire while. OVERLY THINNED FRONT In not knowing how to create the style, TJ ended up zealously thinning the front and sides while chatting away. To point when my hair catches on my shoulders, I look like I'm unhealthy and losing hair from it. Remember, I'd walked in with super thick tresses. CHUNKY BACK From my seat, I see chunkiness in the back that does not belong with the angled front. It looked wrong even as she explained it was "for texture." Seeing my silhouette in a glass storefront later, the back is unevenly tapered, remaining very full until near the neckline, where it thins out tremendously. It looks mismatched with the front from every angle. DAILY MAINTENANCE My main concern in getting a cut: Do not give me a cut I have to tame into place. There's too much I'd rather be doing than wrangling my hair into behaving. Give it a cut it settles into place on its own. In basic English: "Shower and go," "get out of bed and go" - emphasized throughout, yet completely ignored. PHONE COORDINATION I called yesterday afternoon, and she had plenty of availability last night and today. It concerned me that she had that much availability. I chalked it up to lack of marketing. I made an appointment for 10:30 am today, and called again at 6 pm after lining up other beauty appointments to grab the 2 pm if possible. She was with a client, so I offered to call back. She said she would instead. I never got that call. I'm glad I didn't get to reschedule. Given how flustered she got with ample time, I would've fared far worse had I been sandwiched into the evening lineup. NEW CUSTOMERS One comment TJ made that highly disturbed me was that women's cuts usually only take 30 minutes. I had been clear that I was a new customer. This meant consultation time to get to know the client's preferences and discussing how to make their requests happen given their hair texture and head topography - and your limitations, if that applies, as it should have here. TJ didn't and wrecked my hair. Elegance is simplicity refined. I'm so used to my cut that I forgot it takes true skill to read hair texture, whirls, and topography to create a "simple" cut that sits perfectly first thing in the morning with zero coaxing. TJ is great for truly basic cuts: Barber Blunt *Boyish* pixies I absolutely cannot recommend TJ for anything else. In fact, Yelp out of here fast. read more

I have gone to TJ Hair Studio several times with my husband, mainly for haircuts but he also got a perm the last time we were there. We have been happy with all the services we have received. The owner really knows hair. I have thinning fine hair (not unusual for an older white guy) while my husband has dense thick hair (he is Filipino), and she cuts both equally well. We were both impressed with the quality of the products used for the perm, there was almost no ammonia smell. The owner is the only employee so there is no issue with who is going to do your hair. Even though this is a one person shop we seldom have had a problem getting in when we wanted, often the same day that we call for an appointment. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this shop. read more

IMO, every modern, working Asian girl needs a sweet Korean auntie hair stylist that checks in on her boyfriend status, marvels that she's so pretty and why doesn't she have one? (should I try to explain my feminist, hipster, nerd niche and its impossibility to fill? Nah) and gives her an amazing hair cut to boot. Seriously, girls. This lady is not only skilled in hair cutting, but Asian hair cutting, and I had purposely sought out Asian hair places in Minneapolis and was thrilled with this one. I showed her a picture off of Pinterest of the style I was going for, and she said "No problem, no problem" and proceeded to cut my hair whilst trying to set me up with random Asian guys she knew at my work place lol. It was extremely cute and therapeutic (why can't life be as simple as "Do you have a boyfriend?"). I walked out unsure of the results, but she assured me that the style would come out after I shampooed and blow dried. After which I did, the cut turned out to be the PERFECT mid-length style with mischievous layers that was amazing. In conclusion, I will come back when/if (probably when) I want to get my hair colored because I know this lady will know how to color Asian hair perfectly. One word .. AMAZING! TJ's Hair Studio is small hair salon owned and run by a very nice Korean lady named TJ. I know this place from my co-worker that recently got a hair cut here. I dont have one regular hair salon that I will go to get my hair cut or whatever hair-related cos I found that non of the American hair salons that Ive been to can handle my hair. My hair is nothing special, but it's very fine and very thick, it can be a challenge for American hair stylists. After talking to TJ, she told me that she learnt how to cut hair in Korean before moving to the States, and then she also went to the beauty or hair school here in Twin Cities, so she knows how to handle both Asian and Caucasian hair styles. I didnt really have a clear cut of what I wanted. I just wanted a shorter hair cos its been an awfully hot summer. I browsed through the hair mag that she had and pointed at one style and told her i wanted something similar to that. She used the style that I told her as a guide but she also applied her own idea and her own style to get the final hair cut that would suit and compliment the shape of my face. What's so great about TJ? She was very patient and incredibly detailed. She really took her time to get everything right. Lucky for cos she didnt have any customers waiting that day that I went. After a little bit over an hour of cutting, shampooing, and hair styling, she said .. Im sorry the price has increased. I started to get worried a little cos I had no idea how much it would cost. Then she said .. for haircut and shampoo .. it's 26 bucks. Umm .. WHAT??? That much work for only 26 bucks??? What more can I say about TJ. She's absolutely amazing. read more

As mentioned by others, TJ is a very nice Korean lady who does this out of her love for giving people the hair cut/style that they want and suits their face. She is very patient and puts alot of effort in to details. As an Asian, I always feel that western cutting and styles don't suit me (and are pricey) so TJ was exactly who I was looking for since moving here! Spend some time to explain in easier english and TJ will listen, and you won't be disappointed. Or you can bring a picture in of what you want. As with any new person cutting hair, it may take a time for her to get used to what you want/ looking for if you cannot describe it or bring a photo. Prices i thought were very reasonable, but then I haven't really compared with others. Call ahead to make sure they have time for you though as she can get busy! Before you walk in, you'll notice a donut shop right next door which gives you this awesome sweet smell and when you do step into this salon, you'll notice a charming boutique style decor. The owner is incredibly nice. She is Korean and understands basic English but anything more than that you'll need to substantiate with some pictures. I suggest you bring a previous selfie of the haircut you want. The owner does an excellent job in executing the style of cut. I went in for a simple guy's cut. $20 is what it costed me. TJ is a woman of grace and elegance. She cares about all her customers and always wears a smile on her face. I go there to get a cut and then perm. This is my second time getting a perm and she did a wonderful job, once again! She knows how to cut it perfectly before perming. My hair lays perfectly after my perm because she has crafted my layers to where it isn't too thick or too thin. I would highly recommend this place to someone who's looking for styling Asian hair, but honestly TJ probably does a fine job for whomever is looking for a cut which is fair and reasonably priced. I hate writing bad reviews, but I want to be honest to anyone who was looking for digital perm services. I went to her since I weighed out the few digital perm options there were in the twin cities (about 3, one was not a legitimate digital perm, the other place had bad reviews) and I made a call and booked the appointment. I was excited to take the plunge on something I spent MONTHS researching! I make the long trek (for me) out to Golden Valley and wait about half hour past my appointment time to be seen only to be told that my hair was too damaged for a digital perm, BUT, she could do a perm that would give me the same results. She told me my hair would basically fall off if I did a digital perm, so...okay. Since I had already made the trek and it was raining incredibly hard, I decided to trust her. I felt that it was hard to believe that my hair was too damaged for a digital perm, considering I had seen and read about many people who have much more processed hair than mine show their beautiful digital perms. I dye my hair with a gentle dye. That's it. No heat processing at all. My regular stylist never once mentioned my hair being damaged in my 9 year relationship with her, so I was taken aback by her assessment. But still, I went with the regular perm. As the perm was setting, I looked around the small salon, and I did not see a digital perm machine anywhere. It could've been in back, but who knows? I'm not accusing false advertising of services offered, but these machines are large and I did not see one anywhere....Odd. So, I followed her aftercare instructions and gave myself ample time (months) to try to figure out how to style it with different methods and products, but it is mostly just a frizzy mess no matter what I do. I really wish she had encouraged a consult for the digital perm before I decided to go with what she gave me. My choices, I know, but if someone calls in scheduling digital perm services, it'd be nice to say you only will do them with a prior consult to set expectations of what is and is not possible. SO, I guess I will wait until we have a salon that offers legit digital perms in the twin cities, or book an appointment at a salon when I travel out of state...I'll make sure to ask for a consult first no matter what, though :) read more

TJ was very careful when listening to what I wanted and heard exactly what I was trying to say, even though I was vague, marbles in the mouth and said little that was intelligible. I just don't speak hair. As she worked, I couldn't believe that she cut the right amount of the length, overall, and gave shape to my coarse, wavy, dried out and uncontrollable hair. I was in the chair for 30 minutes and paid $18 plus tip. What?!?! Yet TJ happened to be busy today. I had called ahead for an appointment but let her take a regular customer who walked in right before I did. Another regular customer walked in while I was waiting. She had to turn him away. And then, another customer came in. This customer had an appointment, but TJ seemed to have mixed up her calendar and was taken by surprise. TJ took the customer after I was done, but she had to wait almost 15 minutes for her turn. TJ, the cut and the price were great, but this spot can be disorganized and messy. It isn't shiny and no wine will be served. TJ does have non-Asian customers (the two regulars), but the three Asians (including myself) were there for TJ's skills with Asian hair. One said that she drives 45 minutes from home to the salon. Bring cash. read more

NEVER EVER GO HERE! This was the worst experience of my life. I came here for a perm and TJ damaged my hair beyond repair and then had the audacity to say she'd do it again for half price the next day or the next week. No refund, and anyone who knows hair knows you can't put your hair through those kind of chemicals so soon without expecting your hair to fall off/apart. TJ is meticulous and really seems to CARE about what she's doing. My husband 'discovered' her then sent me to her. She takes her time and just does a really nice job. I've only had cuts, so I can't comment on if she even does perms or coloring. The only drawback for me in going to TJ is that she has a very thick Korean accent and can be a little difficult to understand, but she's sweet and friendly and if the shop isn't busy you can take time and listen carefully and mostly get what she's saying. Plus, she knows she kind of difficult to understand so ask her to repeat what you don't get the first time. My husband gets good cuts and she does all the beard, mustache, ear and neck hair -you know all that funky hair that starts sprouting on men that are 'over 40'. We are fans of TJ! read more

I came 3 mins ahead the appointment, and found there is a customer before me. I waited 30 mins in a super-cold room. Finally, it's my turn. TJ was busy in calling other customers but no one anwsered. I have been searching for a good place to get my hair cut since I arrived in the Twin Cities two years ago. My hair tends to be difficult to work with--lots of natural curls and waves. I also have a lot of hair. I found TJ's on yelp and since it was nearby decided to try it. Honestly, I think this is the best hair cut I've had in years. TJ is very detailed and picky when it comes to cutting hair, and she seems to really care that the cut and style she creates looks good. She tends to have a lot of Asian customers, but I think she could cut almost anyone's hair. I am very satisfied with the work she did. I just came for hair cut today referred by a friend. In a rainy day, TJ had a warm and genuine personal style that made me feel very comfortable and welcomed. It was clear that she loved the job she was doing. She really wanted to get to know me. The haircut turned out to be what exactly I want as I showed her the picture. Her English is not quite good, but it does not influence our communication at all. The price is much cheaper than many other places. Love her and this cozy place.
