As soon as I entered - I was greeted with a brief tour and a shot of whisky. The rooms weren't spotless (there was trash in my trash can, spots on the walls, etc). My private room had a closet, a box fan, a desk, a side table, a stained towel, and a subpar twin mattress with one basic pillow. My radiator made hellish noises throughout the night, but the temperature was cozy inside. The location is great - very central within Hamtramck, and walkable to some good restaurants. Parking wasn't always available on Holmes, so I was a little nervous leaving my car around the block. If you're not used to Detroit (or other major cities) - make sure you don't leave anything in your car. The hostel was "fostering" a dog while I was there, and she was not friendly when I passed her in the hall one night - I hope she finds a good home asap. Check-in was more complicated than it needed to be (all instructions left off a critical digit, and I saw several others struggle with the same issue) - the building has also been painted since most of the online photos, so it can leave you scratching your head if you're in the right place. I hope they've fixed the entry code issue instead of expecting guests to figure it out, and I hope they add instructions about the trick to leaving the building... I didn't explore other floors (like the laundry room in the basement, but it's nice they offer on-site laundry) and ultimately - it was a standard hostel: a grungy, affordable place to crash alongside like-minded travelers.

There's limited access to a kitchen, shared bathrooms, and shared or private bedrooms depending on how booked up they are. Small groups (~6) learn to ride segues in about 10 minutes and with their helmets on visit the Guardian building, Campus Martius (do you know from where all the mile roads are measured from?); the river walk and other sites that every Detroit area person ought to find interesting. It's fun and not exhausting (as walking might be), and not street-tied (as biking might be) to take a tour and learn the silent stories which lie latent all over the city's downtown area (Did you know we have the 2nd largest theater district in the nation?). It's time somebody brings positive fun to this great, albeit beleagured city! "Dave" and his crew take reservations and we were glad we took the risk, bought local, and renewed our memories about the old traditionals like Greek Town, but also opened our eyes to many unknown stories (and we're natives!). He told me he could customize a tour that included mid-century modern residential buildings in addition to the regular walking tour of downtown skyscrapers. The price was more than reasonable so we set the date. He picked us up at our hotel and provided an incredibly thorough tour of the city, telling us countless stories about Detroit and Grosse Pointe as we went. I was able to hop out of the car and take photos of my favorite buildings whenever I wanted. The only downside was the day had to end at some point. You will be hard pressed to find someone more knowledgeable and passionate about his city's history than John Paul. As we said goodbye I promised to repay the favor if he makes his way to Houston someday. What else can I say?!

Oh Canada how much I've missed you! After living in the south for the last 10 years my trips to…read moreCanada were infrequent. The Detroit Windsor Tunnel hasn't changed much over the years. Getting to Canada is a short drive under the Detroit River. It's the hard to believe the tunnel has been a daily underwater route since 1930. At its lowest point this 2 lane roadway goes 75 feet (23 m) below the river surface. It was always a treat to take the tunnel as a kid. On this recent trip (7-23-25) I met a few friends for dinner and some gambling after at Caesars Windsor. It's $8.25 USD to cross from Detroit and $7.75 CAD to come back from Canada. Make sure to have your passport or documentation ready as they check everyone at the border and being prepared helps expedite the process. It can get busy during weekends, holidays, and rush hour time but seldom have I ever been held up long at the border.

The Detroit/WIndsor Tunnels been around for a very long time and as a kid, this was our primary way…read moreto get to Canada whenever we went over the border. While things have changed over time like the fees and customs agents, the tunnel has stood the test of time. I remember as a kid thinking it was so cool to see the "welcome to Canada" flag once you got to a certain point. It's about a mile long and only one lane each way. Very rarely have we ever had back up traffic since I literally have crossed this tunnel no less than 100 times. Coming from the Detroit side, the payment to cross is now entirely electronic. no cash! Card only. I think it was $7.50 to get through. Eventually, you stop at the customs agent and they ask you what your doing over in Canada and for how long you'll be there. If they think you have something suspicious or don't like your answer, you get pulled into the customs area and searched. Prepare to be there a very long time! They do have a duty free shop here for alcohol and a few other things as well. I can't remember where to pull off for this side of the tunnel, but it's somewhere if you need to. No bathrooms available!!
