Aloha! This review is way overdue and is about our lovely experience staying at the Hale Makai in…read morethe Ginger cottage #4 back in May 2019. If you are looking for the perfect getaway, in need of peace, quiet, a place to detach from the hustle and bustle of city life and connect with nature, the Hale Makai cottages can provide all aspects of relaxation. Nestled in the depths of a tropical paradise you can find this exquisite beach front property with panoramic views of the ocean and as you walk out onto the sand you can witness a magnificent sunrise (am) and sunset (pm). We originally booked our stay in May 2018 however, due to the unforeseen flooding the Hanalei/Haena Area experienced in April 2018 which caused a lot of damage resulting in the closure of many businesses, the Kauai government imposed a strict ban for tourist to not be allowed to rent in areas that were hit hard, this was due to the safety of the tourist. So, Hale Makai cottages offered to re-book our stay the following year once the Kauai government felt it was safe again for tourist to rent and dwell in the Haena area. Susan play such an integral part in rebooking our stay in May 2019. She exhibited superb customer service and was always on point in answering all our questions promptly. We loved our cottage and it was equipped with everything we needed, comfy bed, linens, dishes, oven, stove, utensils, refrigerator, sink, living room, outdoor patio (we used to eat out every morning and night), soak tub, and beautifully smelling soaps and lotions locally made by Aunty Ina. The breeze felt so nice coming through into the cottage and it smelled like plumeria. It's about a 5-minute drive into the hip town of Hanalei and your surrounded by so many beautiful beaches that are not heavily impacted with tourists. When we were there it felt like we had our own private beach. We really enjoyed our stay here, the cottages are immaculate and the grounds are impeccably well maintained, just absolute paradise! Mahalo!

Matt & Chris were so helpful with our stay. The grounds are amazing & cottages located on the best beach. We will be back and look forward to our next trip.

This is not a spa experience nor a quaint bed and breakfast. This is a series of a few small…read morecottages on a sweet property a couple blocks from the beach on the far end of Hanalei. There is a covered shared patio area for grilling and a couple of hammocks. The cottage we stayed in was the two-bedroom two-bath. It was tiny but perfectly functional for our travel needs. There is a small kitchen that has a fridge, stove, microvwave, coffee maker and toaster. The stove is an electric old appliance but functional. The fridge is clean and large enough to stash food for a family for a week. The dishes and flatware are old but there are plenty. There is a bed in the main room and a bed in the smaller 2nd bedroom (that also has a mini-fridge and microwave). The first bathroom appears original to the house with the tall tiled rectangular shower common to houses of the era. The 2nd bathroom is larger and more modern. The wood floors throughout the bedrooms of the attached cottage are old and full of the patina of lives of all those who have passed through. The floors in the kitchen and bathrooms are covered with other material. There is a lanai with two chairs and and an umbrellaed table off each bedroom. The sliding door stuck on the first one, but it didn't matter. When we sat out there, drinking our coffee we could see the sun and clouds kissing the mountains and hear the ocean. There was a sweet cat who visited, but didn't beg. The roosters, somehow, were barely noticeable here and didn't wake me in the mornings, even with the windows wide open. The breeze was divine. The staff was friendly and accommodating when I called to book and on the day we checked out. We got a text message with the lockbox code and wifi information on the day of check in. Parking was right in the driveway, just a few feet from our cottage. The fans could use some cleaning and the toilets were small and seemed to run. But the water was warm and the towels were soft and smelled nice. The beds were also soft, but the charm of the whole setting was the perfect place to rest and restore before heading out for hikes, a beach walk, or a lazy day driving. If you enjoy a unique travel experience without fuss or pretense, want to stay in a cottage similar to the houses many locals live in, and want a yard next to nature on the north shore, I cannot recommend this place enough. The price was also spectacularly lower than the hotels and airbnb options. I'm grateful for having this place of escape from busy life on Honolulu.

The food carts are good and very convenient located on the property right outside of building 5. I would come back. My only complaint is that there are chickens everywhere and they woke me every morning between 3:30 and 5:00. Next time i will bring earplugs!!

Originally we were told AC is extra $30 per day, but somehow it was included when we checked in. Oddly they only allow 5 devices associated with your room, which is not really feasible in this modern age of tech/gadgets. The staff was able to add 5 more devices free. Our unit had a modern smart water heater, dryer, washer, dishwasher, all appliances were new. The chickens on the island when I had visited always went off around 5AM. At times going off at random times between 3 -5am. Not the resort's fault. But what I do fault them on is poor sound insulation. Example is every room has shuttered windows and a screen. NO Wall there. So its easy for sound to travel right through. I wore ear plugs all through the night and still got woken up by those chickens. Also, people above us on the 2nd floor, you could hear every step they made (not their fault). So. be warned, if you are a light sleeper - good luck. Pools were fine, not warm. The 2 Hot tubs on next to the main lobby were hot and nice. The other on the other pool area wasn't as hot. The grills there worked well. We tried them out for a meal or two. No house keeping, but you may request them to bring extra towels, pool towels, etc. through their text system. Convenient way to communicate with staff.
