Stayed two weeks this trip and already booked next year for three!! The resort is right on the cliffs and over looks the ocean. Very clean with every amenity you could think of in a condo. Close to everything and we are sold!!

Hair from shaving on the bathroom sink

Rented unit 7202, it was my first and last time renting thru VRBO. First of all, I live on a neighboring island, and I have I do condo cleaning part time. With that said, I know when a unit is clean just by the smell. When I opened the door my heart sank. Everywhere I looked was dirty. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Checked the beds, and the linens had hair on them, drool on pillow cases, and smelled dirty. Anyone can tell when sheets are washed and when they smell like someone has slept in them. That was just the beginning of the grossness we had to deal with. The bathrooms were disgusting. Toilet seats were gross, and the master bathroom one had poop smeared on the bottom. The sink had hair stuck on the faucet and the sink from shaving. The shower had hair all over and moldy looking spots all over. Everything was sticky, and I went into cleaning mode because the owner wasn't answering the phone. I wanted to start cleaning, except their really weren't many cleaning supplies in the unit. We had to go to Foodland in princeville to buy cleaning supplies. My friend and I both cleaned for almost 3 hours that night. It was after 10 p.m., and we were still cleaning. The owner finally called me back and said she personally cleaned the unit for 2 days straight. I told her it was obviously not true. She lied and lied and even screamed at me. We had to wash everything because we felt so grossed out. The next day, the owner called me again when we were out on a drive, trying to enjoy the rest of our vacation, and she went off on me. I told her all we cleaned, and I sent her pictures, and she still had the nerve to deny it. I told her the least she could do is give us a night off, and she had the nerve to threaten me. She said that if I left her a bad review that she was not going to do anything for us. I honestly didn't even think about a review, I just wanted her to make things right. But she couldn't even own up to how gross things were, and she couldn't even say, "I am sorry." If she had apologized and admitted that she dropped the ball on the cleaning, I wouldn't have been so angry, but instead, she screamed at me like I did something to her. She also said that units in that same complex rent for a lot more than hers. I told her that's not the point. We paid over $2,100 for 5 nights, and we deserved a clean place to stay. I called VRBO, and their first solution was to say that they could refund me $175 cleaning fee and we could leave. I was furious. That's not a solution. What about the rest of the money. They said, "Sorry we spoke to the owner, and that's all she is willing to do." I told them that wasn't good enough. Then they asked me to send them pictures, which I gladly did, and they apologized. First apologize I had heard. After 2+ hours on the phone with them, they agreed to refund me their fee. I should've listened to the comments on all of her reviews. Even her good reviews mention that the place is not properly cleaned and needs a deep clean. The owner, Sherry Brewer, is extremely rude and very difficult to deal with. She does her own cleanings, and the place is disgusting. Please save yourself the trouble and don't rent this particular unit (#7202), unless you don't mind staying in a filthy place. Btw, we left the unit in excellent condition. Beds made with clean sheets, all towels and dishes cleaned. We left it the way we would treat our own place. The owner called me the last day and left me a voicemail saying she was going to do something for us, and it's been almost a week, and I have yet to hear from her. I'm posting just a few of the pictures, if you zoom in, you too will be grossed out.

The view from the lanai at 11B, superb!

Love love love Alii Kai Resort condo 11B. My husband and I flew in from Minnesota and were exhausted upon arrival. The primary bedroom has blackout blinds and we were able to catch up on some sleep. The bed is sooo comfortable. The kitchen has everything a chef needs and there are grills at the pool area which is steps away, and a perfect temperature hot tub to soothe our aching muscles after long days of swimming or hiking. I love the light fixtures in this property too, very stylish and reminiscent of a beach house in Cape Cod or The Hamptons. We enjoyed meals on the veranda and dined with the Kauai chickens while looking out to the ocean and taking in the sights and sounds in a secluded, almost tropical jungle type of atmosphere. Some mornings, we would walk to Starbucks or breakfast at The Westin (you can walk to dinner at Nanea there too unless you have physical challenges) or we would take a walk at the path along the golf course or around the grounds. We were super comfortable and relaxed. You cannot beat the price for an experience this comfortable and peaceful. We will stay here again for sure.

    Good luck gecko

Vacation time in Kauai! We arrived the last week of February 2020. Lovely timeshare spot close to the ocean. We stayed for a week, 2 bedroom/2 bath. I believe we were in unit 8A, bottom floor unit. The map of the Ali'i Kai resort that they have is not accurate to show where the pool area is. That was my only complaint. The pool is extremely close to the unit we were in, but according to their map, you would wonder how they figured out the direction. Maybe the wrong map was given? There are upstairs units and you can hear bumps and knocks and footsteps. There is no air conditioning, so therefore windows are open and you can hear other conversations from people in different units. This wasn't too bothersome, but I can imagine that it would depend on the people. Chickens and Nenes, plus other feathered friends roam at their leisure. You will hear roosters at all time of the day. They are very talkative! Overall, we were very pleased with staying at Ali'i Kai. Highly recommend!

Great view while playing some "fetch" golf with our Black Lab, right outside our room.

For the price, this place can't be beat on Kauai's north shore. We rented a two-bedroom on the ground level that had an amazing view of the ocean. However, the rooms are a bit tired-looking and not very modern. It's ok if you want a nice place to use as home base while you relax or explore the island. But, without a doubt, the real value is the price, you'll save tons of $$ that you'd spend at a 5-star hotel resort, which we have. We'll go back to this one though, we'll spend our money on other fun things.

When it comes to Alii Kai, just know how all things are not created equal. Quite a bit of research went into our choice of condo here. There is a range of dowdy and outdated - all the way up to unit 4-203, which happens to be the best in this complex. Completely gutted and refreshed, it is clean, polished and situated on edge of bluff. Ultimately, the quality and maintenance of the units are responsibility of owners, not site management. This is why choosing the perfect dwelling takes time. Investigate first. The pool is a great option for those of us who want to know what we're swimming in. It was heated perfectly as well. Plus, it was much, much deeper than 3 feet, which is hard to find these days. The development sits on the edge of Princeville, so there are tradeoffs. Do you want panoramic views, or beach access? I like the vista here. Beaches are everywhere. I can find one anytime, as this is...........an island.

We loved our 2bedroom villa, while we had plenty of space the property itself is small enough that walking anywhere doesn't feel like a chore. Here is where we fall off and don't quite hit the 5 stars. Our villa was super clean. Toilets weren't fully cleaned upon arrival and they definitely didn't do a better job during our stay. The couch and blankets had a few mystery stains that grossed me out. Cocktails and the restaurant are insanely expensive. We are talking 28 dollars for a cocktail. Additionally the staff member Nancy (pool attendant) was rude to me. I wasn't able to locate a dry chair in the sun at 4pm. so I asked an employee for permission to use a chair near the cabana. Permission was granted but she wasn't happy about it. So asked me to move, while I didn't have issue with moving I did find it rather unprofessional of her to yell at me for not reading the sign and while she offered to help me when I asked to a dry chair on the sun she walked away ranting about my lack of awareness. To make matters worse the same employee had a separate issue with my husband in reguarda to pool towels. When I tried to address it with the front they weren't very helpful. All in all we did have a great week there and hope to go back.

The two restaurants on the property open at 3pm, and are actually closed two days of the week (Wednesday and Thursday were the closed days when we were there). We had to go to the 1 Hotel Resort for breakfast and lunch, which isn't far and can be accessed through the hotels golf cart transportation system, but defeats the purpose of the resort being the destination itself. And if you plan on going anywhere, you NEED a car, there are no Ubers or Lyfts around. We felt stranded when we arrived from our flight at lunch time, starving, and learned the restaurants are closed for another 3 hours, until 3pm. It does have a coffee shop that has drinks, cold and hot homemade sandwiches and snacks for on the go, but the hours it's open depends. The flyer they hand out says it's open from 7am-4pm but we just watched them close today at 1:30pm. There's a QR code that says to scan for live hours, which tells me it doesn't follow the 7am-4pm time frame at all. How would we then know when it's open to plan for it? Thankfully we got in before they closed for a lunch snack. That said, the operating times that can be inconvenient and if you want a proper sit down meal it's not the place. I found myself confused at times, wondering who this place was for because at times I needed food or simply a place to sit, everything seemed to be closed, all the way to the detail of seating areas on a busy dinner night. It's almost as if this isn't a resort meant to be open or helpful for guests living there. Most of the staff is welcoming, I saw one review mention some animosity towards tourists which I could definitely sense at the front desk with one of the ladies, but the rest of the ladies were nice, I think it was just her. 1 Hotel definitely has better service, where they actually critically think to go above and beyond on getting you what you need, though that's expected due to the price difference. The room was clean and had what we needed, full kitchen, master bed and a separate space with a pull out bed that was useful for our family who stayed with us to help with our baby. Overall, I'd rethink calling this location a resort, it's nice but a bit misleading.

HMBC's openness lets you enjoy the warmth, the wetness, and the beauty of Hanalei Bay in a low-key way that lets you feel like you really live there. Maybe I am reacting to our trip to the Princeville St. Regis hotel for sunset cocktails. That beautiful resort felt like placeless luxury. The views were Hawaiian, but the grand style of the rooms, plentiful central air conditioning, upper-class airs, and property layout were suitable for anywhere from the Caribbean to Mexico to wherever... My preference is to stay where the local touch is celebrated. So..., HMBC is not endlessly elegant, it's a beach cottage. But, it is definitely my type of place! HMBC's front lawn leads directly to a very swimmable, less crowded area of Hanalei Bay. We walked 4 miles roundtrip on the Bay every morning, crossing the two local rivers coming into the sea at different places each day as the sands shifted. We took our first swim of the day on our pre-brekfast treks, and decided that the placement of the cottage was enough to ensure a wonderful vacation. The building is smartly designed with a large picture window in the living room. You can sit on the couch or one of the two reclining chairs, and watch the water, surfers, and swimmers go by. Moreover, the furniture and decorations feel well-designed, thought-out, sturdy and in excellent shape. Nothing is beachy, sticky, or falling apart. Suzanne, the owner, knows how to add touches to the property let us feel even more comfortable and able to relax. The building is well maintained and clean, which is not unique but noteworthy because those basic qualities are not universal in Hanalei! There are also nice, if somewhat common extras like a reasonable selection of pots and pans, microwave, toaster-oven, a charcoal BBQ, wide-screen TVs, full-size new refrigerator, comfortable chairs, washing soap, beach towels, extra towels of all types, and other reassuring amenities. We also liked the lock-box on the porch. That arrangement was new to us, but it let us lock up, swim, and not worry about losing the key on the beach. The books, games, and beach-gazing telescope in the living room were truly above-and-beyond treats. So was assortment of beach toys and mats and chairs that were in excellent shape and felt clean. We even appreciated the unique photographs on the walls and the other artwork that was unique and felt just right. We traveled with friends who rented a cottage across the grass from us. Their place is owned by a different member of the extended family that owns 5 adjacent waterfront units (and more elsewhere in the country). We felt lucky to have chosen HMBC because our owners seemed to understand what boosts a vacation. Our cottage had a gas stove, which I much prefer over the electric one our friends had. Adding gas must be costly, but it let us enjoy cooking more. Plus, there is a washing machine and gas clothes drier at the cottage which was both handy and free ... our friends had to pay several dollars to dry their clothes at an underpowered electric drier. (Come on owners of the other cottages... you're charging $400+ a night and then you make your guests put in quarters to wash and dry their clothes?? I am sure glad HMBC's washing and drying were not nickel and dime annoying extras. I mean, do you want to carry a bag full of quarters from the mainland in case you need to do laundry? Geeze!) Another special at HMBC is its lovely, hot-water plumbed, outdoor shower. We also appreciated that our kitchen was stocked with matches (our friends had none) and lighter fluid (again, they had none). Our friends even had to ask the housekeepers cleaning other cottages for more toilet paper. You're given the owner's telephone number is case of any problems. We had an incident: the clothes drier started smoking with an electrical smell as soon as we turned it on one morning. Suzanne had someone check the problem that afternoon and, when it turned out the motor had burned out, had a new drier installed the next morning. She was very, very responsive, came out herself to make sure we were okay, and ensured that the minor problem was solved. That visit, by the way, is when we discovered how delightful and friendly Suzanne is! Overall, in our opinion HMBC is excellently laid out, well taken care of, and, well..., as good as it gets.

Views of Bali Hai from your front lawn? If you want the quintessential Hawaii experience, then stay here! The Moon Beach cottage is on the rustic side (think gecko visitors)--but that's part of its charm. Do yourself a favor and use the outside shower as your primary one (it's amazing to look up at Bali Hai as you lather up). The bed is a lot more comfortable than it looks, which is a big plus in my book. One night it got a bit noisy as some kids were partying on the beach--but everyone else we ran into was nice and respectful (and quiet). Sitting in the living room on the rattan furniture with the windows open and watching the surfers and the waves is pure heaven! It's one of the lesser-expensive places in Hanalei, but at $1,950 for the week it might be above some people's price range. But you are right on Weke road (multi-million-dollar real estate)--in walking distance to town and with direct ocean views. Also, the house sits on a big lot. There's even a neighborhood cat and dog who come by from time to time to say hello--just welcoming you to the neighborhood with that ol' Aloha spirit. Skip Poipu. Stay here. There is a really cool grounds kitty that may follow you to the beach. If you're not into cats she somehow knows as my husband is allergic to cats and she never approached him. We did stock up at Safeway and also we walked back into town with flashlights and tried some little restaurant of which there were many. We walked on the beaches and had morning coffee on the beach (which is across the street literally). We always felt perfectly safe and didn't feel like we were pushing the locals out. When you stay here walk down the beach to the pier as a fun jaunt.
