Your mom!

I'm torn between a 4 or 5 star review... so I went with 4. As with the opinions of almost any other, take mine with a grain of salt. :) We stayed in unit 221. We also managed a rate that's about 1/2 the typical rate. So from a cost/value standpoint... we won the lottery. Our views were as good as you could hope for--step out the sliding glass door and you could spit over the edge of the cliff that wraps around hanalei bay. It really is a fantastic view! I ate breakfast, drank soco & coke, and spent evenings watching the sun set. I also slept on the floor, right in front of the slider, just as recommended by our host. I gather that each condo is setup as differently as the folks who own them. So there's no saying that ours was appointed any better/worse than the others. But as far as I'm concerned... the couches in 221 are terrrrrrrible. In fact, ever piece of furniture but the bed(s) was quite uncomfortable. I think my coach class seat to get here was comfier! I guess that's the why, on my star rating. I know I got a wayyyy good deal here. But if folks are charging upwards of $300 a night, there should at least be comfy furniture. Shoot... even motel 6 doesn't make you sit on wicker baskets. But that aside... I was very pleased to have stayed here the cockroaches, beetles, and lizards didn't even get to me. I just collected them all and launched them off the balcony. The island was good to us and a pleasure to experience. The room was a fantastic find. We especially liked the washer/drier and kitchen.

Stayed in #116 for a week on our honeymoon. The condo is really nice and the view is absolutely amazing! It is a one bedroom with full kitchen and a lanai with tables and chairs. We cooked breakfast and ate outside every morning enjoying the view and pretty birds that visited. The have towels, coolers, snorkel gear, washer/dryer, etc for your stay. Bring your own shower stuff but the provide hair dryer and soap. We just loved it here. Be sure to watch a sunset from lanai. It is beautiful. The walk down to the private beach is very steep, so beware if you have any knee problems or anything like that, you may want to use the public beaches. The only two things to be aware of are the rental agency they used sent all the information for entering the condo, wifi info and directions to the wrong person. So on the day we were flying in, I finally emailed, asking how we get into condo. She informed me she sent the email twice to someone I had never heard of. Thankfully, no one else showed up. The other is that there is no a/c. We were fine bc we came in March, but there was one night when it was so hot and humid, we were sweating getting ready for dinner. All in all, we loved this condo and had a great time.

Rented this place for our 5 day 5 night stay and it was beautiful! 2 bedrooms 2 bathroom 2 storys had a nice deck to watch the view and drank a nice cold beer. Walking distance to private beach. People around the area are nice. No heater No AC but its hawaii its alwayz hot. Does have ceiling fans which were a plus. Unit was clean we got #210 nice views. Kitchen was nice and clean and had all the cookware plus kitchenware. Fridge might need maintance because our stuff was not freezing and our beer wouldnt stay cold in the fridge overnight, thank god for ice lol. Not too pricey. Electric BBQ on the deck , but if u use it at night the bugs will come ....cuz the bugs come out at night WHA WHA.......The bugs come out at night!!! lol But if I ever come back to this island I will rent a unit in this area . Yup free wifi too and also cellphone service is not that strong here I usually had 1 bar or it would roam with sprint but as long as your on wi fi youl ll be aight!! Mahalo!

We loved our 2bedroom villa, while we had plenty of space the property itself is small enough that walking anywhere doesn't feel like a chore. Here is where we fall off and don't quite hit the 5 stars. Our villa was super clean. Toilets weren't fully cleaned upon arrival and they definitely didn't do a better job during our stay. The couch and blankets had a few mystery stains that grossed me out. Cocktails and the restaurant are insanely expensive. We are talking 28 dollars for a cocktail. Additionally the staff member Nancy (pool attendant) was rude to me. I wasn't able to locate a dry chair in the sun at 4pm. so I asked an employee for permission to use a chair near the cabana. Permission was granted but she wasn't happy about it. So asked me to move, while I didn't have issue with moving I did find it rather unprofessional of her to yell at me for not reading the sign and while she offered to help me when I asked to a dry chair on the sun she walked away ranting about my lack of awareness. To make matters worse the same employee had a separate issue with my husband in reguarda to pool towels. When I tried to address it with the front they weren't very helpful. All in all we did have a great week there and hope to go back.

Your marriage will thank you. This was our second trip in two months and we're already planning a trip back. Background: We've been wanting to check out Kauai. In the past three months we've stayed at the megas at Poipu, local places at Kapaa and by far the very best is Hanalei Bay. We looked at the megas and upon exploring via car we found the Hanalei Surfboard House (https://hanaleisurfboardhouse.com). We meant to do all of the hiking, snorkeling and events we did from the other two visits and somehow we just relaxed, swam in the Ocean and walked in the little town and went to local beaches. Hanalei Surfboard House: We stayed in the "Love Shack"! Wow how fun and what a charge! The outdoor shower is amazing although there is a full bathroom. The private patio is fabulous. I can't say enough about this great find. Simon the owner is a record producer, and the memorabilia in the Love Shack bungalow is worthy of a museum. The bedding was great and the bed fabulous. There is a really cool grounds kitty that may follow you to the beach. If you're not into cats she somehow knows as my husband is allergic to cats and she never approached him. We did stock up at Safeway and also we walked back into town with flashlights and tried some little restaurant of which there were many. We walked on the beaches and had morning coffee on the beach (which is across the street literally). We always felt perfectly safe and didn't feel like we were pushing the locals out. When you stay here walk down the beach to the pier as a fun jaunt.

This cottage is a perfect vacation rental if you like to feel the unique qualities of the community…read moreyou're visiting. HMBC's openness lets you enjoy the warmth, the wetness, and the beauty of Hanalei Bay in a low-key way that lets you feel like you really live there. Maybe I am reacting to our trip to the Princeville St. Regis hotel for sunset cocktails. That beautiful resort felt like placeless luxury. The views were Hawaiian, but the grand style of the rooms, plentiful central air conditioning, upper-class airs, and property layout were suitable for anywhere from the Caribbean to Mexico to wherever... My preference is to stay where the local touch is celebrated. So..., HMBC is not endlessly elegant, it's a beach cottage. But, it is definitely my type of place! HMBC's front lawn leads directly to a very swimmable, less crowded area of Hanalei Bay. We walked 4 miles roundtrip on the Bay every morning, crossing the two local rivers coming into the sea at different places each day as the sands shifted. We took our first swim of the day on our pre-brekfast treks, and decided that the placement of the cottage was enough to ensure a wonderful vacation. The building is smartly designed with a large picture window in the living room. You can sit on the couch or one of the two reclining chairs, and watch the water, surfers, and swimmers go by. Moreover, the furniture and decorations feel well-designed, thought-out, sturdy and in excellent shape. Nothing is beachy, sticky, or falling apart. Suzanne, the owner, knows how to add touches to the property let us feel even more comfortable and able to relax. The building is well maintained and clean, which is not unique but noteworthy because those basic qualities are not universal in Hanalei! There are also nice, if somewhat common extras like a reasonable selection of pots and pans, microwave, toaster-oven, a charcoal BBQ, wide-screen TVs, full-size new refrigerator, comfortable chairs, washing soap, beach towels, extra towels of all types, and other reassuring amenities. We also liked the lock-box on the porch. That arrangement was new to us, but it let us lock up, swim, and not worry about losing the key on the beach. The books, games, and beach-gazing telescope in the living room were truly above-and-beyond treats. So was assortment of beach toys and mats and chairs that were in excellent shape and felt clean. We even appreciated the unique photographs on the walls and the other artwork that was unique and felt just right. We traveled with friends who rented a cottage across the grass from us. Their place is owned by a different member of the extended family that owns 5 adjacent waterfront units (and more elsewhere in the country). We felt lucky to have chosen HMBC because our owners seemed to understand what boosts a vacation. Our cottage had a gas stove, which I much prefer over the electric one our friends had. Adding gas must be costly, but it let us enjoy cooking more. Plus, there is a washing machine and gas clothes drier at the cottage which was both handy and free ... our friends had to pay several dollars to dry their clothes at an underpowered electric drier. (Come on owners of the other cottages... you're charging $400+ a night and then you make your guests put in quarters to wash and dry their clothes?? I am sure glad HMBC's washing and drying were not nickel and dime annoying extras. I mean, do you want to carry a bag full of quarters from the mainland in case you need to do laundry? Geeze!) Another special at HMBC is its lovely, hot-water plumbed, outdoor shower. We also appreciated that our kitchen was stocked with matches (our friends had none) and lighter fluid (again, they had none). Our friends even had to ask the housekeepers cleaning other cottages for more toilet paper. You're given the owner's telephone number is case of any problems. We had an incident: the clothes drier started smoking with an electrical smell as soon as we turned it on one morning. Suzanne had someone check the problem that afternoon and, when it turned out the motor had burned out, had a new drier installed the next morning. She was very, very responsive, came out herself to make sure we were okay, and ensured that the minor problem was solved. That visit, by the way, is when we discovered how delightful and friendly Suzanne is! Overall, in our opinion HMBC is excellently laid out, well taken care of, and, well..., as good as it gets.

Views of Bali Hai from your front lawn? If you want the quintessential Hawaii experience, then stay here! The Moon Beach cottage is on the rustic side (think gecko visitors)--but that's part of its charm. Do yourself a favor and use the outside shower as your primary one (it's amazing to look up at Bali Hai as you lather up). The bed is a lot more comfortable than it looks, which is a big plus in my book. One night it got a bit noisy as some kids were partying on the beach--but everyone else we ran into was nice and respectful (and quiet). Sitting in the living room on the rattan furniture with the windows open and watching the surfers and the waves is pure heaven! It's one of the lesser-expensive places in Hanalei, but at $1,950 for the week it might be above some people's price range. But you are right on Weke road (multi-million-dollar real estate)--in walking distance to town and with direct ocean views. Also, the house sits on a big lot. There's even a neighborhood cat and dog who come by from time to time to say hello--just welcoming you to the neighborhood with that ol' Aloha spirit. Skip Poipu. Stay here. The two restaurants on the property open at 3pm, and are actually closed two days of the week (Wednesday and Thursday were the closed days when we were there). We had to go to the 1 Hotel Resort for breakfast and lunch, which isn't far and can be accessed through the hotels golf cart transportation system, but defeats the purpose of the resort being the destination itself. And if you plan on going anywhere, you NEED a car, there are no Ubers or Lyfts around. We felt stranded when we arrived from our flight at lunch time, starving, and learned the restaurants are closed for another 3 hours, until 3pm. It does have a coffee shop that has drinks, cold and hot homemade sandwiches and snacks for on the go, but the hours it's open depends. The flyer they hand out says it's open from 7am-4pm but we just watched them close today at 1:30pm. There's a QR code that says to scan for live hours, which tells me it doesn't follow the 7am-4pm time frame at all. How would we then know when it's open to plan for it? Thankfully we got in before they closed for a lunch snack. That said, the operating times that can be inconvenient and if you want a proper sit down meal it's not the place. I found myself confused at times, wondering who this place was for because at times I needed food or simply a place to sit, everything seemed to be closed, all the way to the detail of seating areas on a busy dinner night. It's almost as if this isn't a resort meant to be open or helpful for guests living there. Most of the staff is welcoming, I saw one review mention some animosity towards tourists which I could definitely sense at the front desk with one of the ladies, but the rest of the ladies were nice, I think it was just her. 1 Hotel definitely has better service, where they actually critically think to go above and beyond on getting you what you need, though that's expected due to the price difference. The room was clean and had what we needed, full kitchen, master bed and a separate space with a pull out bed that was useful for our family who stayed with us to help with our baby. Overall, I'd rethink calling this location a resort, it's nice but a bit misleading.

I reported the issue to the front office and they didn't care. There was one employee that was sympathetic so she offered me a $146 credit to reimburse me for my "groceries." Ummm. That's not good enough! This resort absolutely ruined my Hawaiian vacation! I slept with all the lights on (but you'll see in the pics that the roaches came out 24/7) I never unpacked my bags and kept my luggage zipped tight for fear of bring roaches home with me. The unit was full of roaches - definitely NOT what you expect when paying $636/night. To top it all off on my last day I asked for an extra 45 minutes at checkout so that I didn't have to stand in the parking lot (where there is no shade and nowhere to sit) in the hot sun for an hour waiting for my taxi. They said "absolutely not" and that check out is 9am and I had to be out at 9am. Crazy! Given the fact that I paid a fortune for a roach infested room you'd think they'd have tried to do something for me. But nope! Nothing!!! The staff there is very rude - the woman they call Aunty something is the absolute worst! DO NOT STAY HERE!!! IT'S GROSS!!! I'd give it zero stars if I could!

Our unit had a modern smart water heater, dryer, washer, dishwasher, all appliances were new. The chickens on the island when I had visited always went off around 5AM. NO Wall there. So its easy for sound to travel right through. I wore ear plugs all through the night and still got woken up by those chickens. Also, people above us on the 2nd floor, you could hear every step they made (not their fault). So. be warned, if you are a light sleeper - good luck. Pools were fine, not warm.
