Be very careful when deciding to hire a handyman. The term eludes to someone who can do anything, but usually means, they have some experience in many things, but not a lot. This is NOT the case with The Handy Jew. Recommended from a friend, I had to first call on THJ when my water heater burst. At that point, you really have no choice but to brace yourself for what you know is about to happen. A gouging. This was not the case. Not only did the owner, Josh tell me what to expect (since I'm new at this) but did so quickly since I was having an emergency. He worked with my budget and very quickly with another guy to get the old one out and get the new one in that he picked up for me. All at a VERY reasonable price. To give you an idea of what is "Reasonable" to me: I teach. Enough said? The problem is, after this quick bail-out, I was thinking of having some organization/closet work done and figured I'd give THJ again. Big mistake. Josh sent over a cross between a magician/artist/carpenter named Blane, who worked such an amazing job, that my wife is already planning on having more shelving done. See the picture of our new closet that will clearly make someone who designs for Ikea say, "DAMN, we can't compete with that!!!!" (only they'll say it in Swedish, of course.) Where our new closet simply had clothes hanging in it, our new one has shelves, cubbies, places for shoes, foldables, and darn near anything else. Anyway, The Handy Jew is reliable, credible, honest, & especially not just some random yahoo living at home with his mom.

Cabinets on both side of stove -- one on the left has a sliding cabinet for garbage, right side is open shelving.

We have been happy clients of Josh for 5 years, and have recommended him to many friends and neighbors. We have a 100+ year old house that tries to fall apart if we don't keep a close eye on it, and he and his team have always treated the house, and us, with care and love. Josh renovated our bathroom five years ago and it still looks great. Not only did he do a top-notch job, he did it start to finish in ONE WEEK. This is unheard of. The job involved all new flooring, removing a 500 lb cast iron tub, reframing for a new tub, some plumbing fixes and all new hardware, installing a new tub and tiling the shower area, installing a new toilet and sink/vanity, as well as removing part of a wall and painting. I still marvel that it all got done so quickly, and that it still looks brand new. Since then Josh and his crew have hung shelving units for us, fixed doors, and done other small jobs around the house. They also built really fabulous cabinets to go around our stove in the kitchen. I had an idea of what I wanted, drew some simple sketches, and they made it a reality. Josh has an eye for design and aesthetics, in addition to thinking through the practicalities of a project. I totally trust his judgment as a craftsman and look forward to working with him next time. He is reasonable and worth every penny.

Would hire Josh again and recommend him to my closest friends. We hired Josh to install a ventilation hood and tile backsplash, as well as add trim, filler and handles to the kitchen. From all of the contractors we spoke with for this and other jobs, he was one of the few to stop and ask questions to ensure he understood, repeat back what he understood and be open to having a conversation. Work turned out impeccable, on time and on budget.

    Before...

Josh and his associate Mike (who did the work of removing a hideous built in, cleaning up the sheetrock behind it and also built a reception desk to my specifications) were great. Prompt and no nonsense, they got right on it and I hardly had to close up shop! Now my space looks fabulous and the clients definitely notice.

I dislike about 95% of the carpet out there ... but don't have the option of putting in hard floors. My pickiness was no match for Andrew, however; he helped me find that needle in the haystack. He pulled out collections that fit my criteria, throwing them on the showroom floor and having me home in on the promising ones via process of elimination. When I showed him some varieties of carpet that I liked from a company outside of The Floor Store's network, he researched them to see if their products met his standards and if working with them would go smoothly (not so much). He got an in-network vendor to send larger samples so that I could really see what various styles would look like in my home. And he walked me through the contract process step by step, making sure I understood exactly what I was signing and paying for. Once that contract was signed, everything moved quickly. Andrew checked in during installation and even humored me at the final stage, allowing me to give him a virtual tour once the carpet was laid. I would certainly recommend him and The Floor Store to anyone looking to get new hard floors or carpet. It's probably not the cheapest option, but my anecdotal evidence tells me that the service can't be beat.

I wish I got more updates during construction but they sent them whenever I asked. I liked that they were very contentious about talking with my neighbor when their van was blocking a little bit of their driveway--a lot of contractors wouldn't bother. I also had another neighbor who was causing some issues and they kept me in the loop, which I appreciated. - Price: I talked to several contractors and their price was pretty reasonable--not the lowest nor the highest, more in the middle. Cons: - After construction, I noticed some damage on parts that were supposed to be protected. They were minor damages, but annoying. The most noticeable one was a dent on my TV, which left a white dot that I see every time I turn on my TV, which sucks. - In terms of details, I noticed that there were some dings in pretty noticeable parts of the wood. I don't know if it was the crew or the wood came like that, but when I was testing a wood sample before purchasing, I hit the wood with a hammer and it didn't leave a mark, so it would take a lot of force to leave a dent like the one pictured. Kinda disappointing because the dent is smack in the middle of a high traffic area. Some last notes: - David came by to do a final walk through and helped me move some of the heavier furniture back. It didn't bother me but if you're expecting furniture to be put back the way it was originally, you'll want to manage your expectations. - You should definitely hire painters and cleaners after the construction--I didn't think the walls were going to be as scuffed up as they were. And everything will be superrrr dusty, even if it's covered. - When I expressed concern about not all baseboards being replaced, which I thought was the scope of work, he explained that he told his crew to use existing baseboards when possible. He said he did this to save me some cost and offered me $150 to cover the savings. I generally feel positive about this, although if I hadn't mentioned it I don't think it would've come up, so take that for what it's worth.

The original floor wore out and we opted to replace it using Flooring Alternatives once again. We chose a 12x12 solid cork floor. The replacement process has ended up with a poor quality installation, not worthy of the price. --There are uneven tile edges in numerous places that are noticeable when your shoe or foot catches. These raised edges will break off at some point. --There are gaps at the edges by the cabinets. --There are numerous places where 4 tiles meet and are off center. Mari's installer Fito returned to inspect the floor at our request and reported the problems to Mari. Mari came out to look for herself and was unable to figure out what or why. She promised to contact the manufacturer of the floor and adhesive. She has not responded in months. I've sent emails, texts and left voice messages. I will be filing a small claims suit shortly because I have no alternative so long as she is unwilling to respond. I think Mari was nearing retirement and working from her home when we hired her this year and may be out of business but her website is still up. I can post a dozen pictures if people are interested. Mari has them and knows very well the floor install is substandard.

I did a lot of research and found that Marmoleum (Forbo's linoleum brand) is eco-friendly, made with non-toxic materials and also feels wonderful beneath bare feet. We decided on White Chocolate which has flecks of real cocoa hulls embedded in the material. It is a light-coloured shade to keep the kitchen looking bright and clean. Some people might choose a floor that hides the dirt, but with this colour floor you can't get away with that. It really helps keep me on my toes for keeping the floor clean. Fito did an excellent job with demo and installation of our sheet marmoleum flooring. The underlayment has to be perfectly smooth and clean. Any dirt or bumps will eventually translate to the marmoleum. It was an all day job for him, but at the end of the day we felt very good about the install. It looks amazing with our new cabinets and after having lived with it for almost a year, there have had no issues with sweeping, mopping or cleaning. Despite the challenges with Covid, Mari and Keegan were great in communicating with us. Everything was timely and we did not experience any significant delays with shipping or installation. Much praise for everyone on the team!
