I always shy away from staying in cabins or cottages because they're old & worn & sometimes not so clean I should say most of the time not all that clean because it's old and worn. This was the exception! Hardwood Hills was not only spotless inside, the grounds were spotless, the people who run the place over and beyond customer service, genuinely nice. This motel is kind of fantastic. It's a 'motel' so I had low expectations. But it's nicer than you'd ever imagine. It's simple but just done so well. Nothing kitschy or trendy or trying to hard, just relaxing and comfortable and nice. The rooms are good size, nicely furnished, unique art on the walls. The bed is great. The bathtub is better than a lot of fancy hotels. This was such a great surprise. read more

Our stay at the Harwood Hill Inn was delightful. First of all, the Inn employs an Artist in Residence and each room is appointed with a variety of art for sale. What hotel do you know of that has a commitment to art in this way? The staff is friendly and helpful. The views are stunning. The rooms are clean, modern, and comfortable. The host mentioned that some people were worried about the temperature dropping: you have to remember that you're in rural Vermont, in this case in late October. There was frost on the ground in the morning. But the heaters work just fine and the Inn supplies extra blankets and space heaters if one asks. If you're coming out to Bennington you're coming to get out of an urban environment, and I would heartily recommend Harwood Hill. read more

This is a perfect covid-safe stay. The room was extremely clean when we arrived, and they have a very thoughtful and contact-free process for check-in and check-out. Aside from feeling extremely safe, the outdoor space directly outside our room was incredible, with picnic tables, hammocks, and an amazing view of the Bennington Monument and Mt Anthony. I almost don't want to write this five star review of The Harwood. I'm afraid that if I do, next time I want to go back, it will be all booked up. The Harwood is a fantastic place if you are looking to stay anywhere in southern Vermont. A place that is certainly a throw-back in accommodations when you first look at it; architecturally it harkens back to the 1950's in that the buildings are only one story tall, with entrance to each room directly from your parking spot in front. It's not a HiltonMarriottBestWestern type of place. And that's the charm and joy to it! Each room has been totally updated and modern and are decorated with works from local artists. No hotel/motel manufactured stuff on the walls here! Each room is clean, the beds are comfortable and the bathrooms have the coolest sinks I have seen in a long time. A continental breakfast is available in what started out as a two car garage and is hosted by amazingly friendly helpful staff. You can mingle with other guests or take your breakfast to several of the outside dining set ups scattered around the grounds. I've stayed there twice and it will be my go-to lodging anytime I am in the area. You should too! read more

I came for autumn foliage in October 2015 and loved this place. There are a few groupings of rooms & cottages, not too dense or too remote. They have a pretty large area for walking around with a beautiful view of the mountain and changing leaves. The picnic area and gazebo are very peaceful places to read. Harwood Hill seems to be involved with a lot of local artists, so there are neat treasures scattered across the grounds, the main office has a kiosk of local crafts and pieces of art, and they offer an arts package that gets you a discount at a lot of local attractions and stores. I plan to get this package next time I visit. The staff was very friendly and accessible. The rooms were beautifully maintained, and there was a continental breakfast on the weekends with really tasty bagels and a good range of cream cheese options. No complaints! read more

I really enjoyed staying in one of the cabins here at Harwood Hill. How many times have you been to a motel that is clean, fresh, and affordable? I think this is a rare gem....a great place to lay your head after a day of driving. Here are some details: The rooms are a tad on the small side, but they sure are spotless. The beds and pillows are comfy. The linens smell fresh and are of good quality for a motel. The towels are standard-issue -- nothing special, really -- but the bathrooms are clean, clean, clean. (You don't get that "I don't wanna touch this" feeling.) We enjoyed sitting outside (big, green lawn!) and looking at the mountains. We took a short stroll across the lawn and had dinner next door (the Publyk House), a pretty good restaurant with an outdoor patio and a big salad bar! Ahh! This was an oasis after a few long days of driving. Friendly owners, too! Thank you for a great, relaxing stay. read more

Harwood Hill was fantastic!! The view is GORGEOUS, the rooms are cozy, and the management/staff were incredibly welcoming and thoughtful. Great for young people to get away for a relaxing weekend. While traveling through to Maine, my boyfriend and I decided to stop last minute in the town of Bennington for the night. The Harwood Hill Motel has wonderful accommodations! And they accept pets too! The rooms were adorable, clean and well kept. The complimentary breakfast also included the best maple yogurt I have ever had. What was just a spot to crash for the night will now be a future destination for vacations to visit the picturesque countryside of Vermont. read more

Upon arrival, we loved our clean, spacious room so much, we asked if there was vacancy for another night! I had done a search online for a dog friendly hotel and this place came up. I'm glad it did! Just a $10 extra charge per night for the dog and must be crated if you leave in the room and the dog is over 40 lbs. Front desk service was friendly and accommodating. The grounds boast a collection of art sculptures, hammock chairs/hammock, screened in gazebo, picnic tables, bench swing. Quiet at night. I know we had neighbors, but there wasn't a peep. Nothing compared to the thin walls of most places. I will say there is no pool, which my kids love to have(I don't really care:)) Prices are reasonable. Room has microwave and fridge. My husband said we won't be staying at any other places in Bennington when we come to visit my parents. We've had much less stellar experiences at the local motels/hotels in the area. read more

So. Arrived around 8pm. Our host was very helpful and BTW, we have a yorkie. We are a scoosh skittish regarding boutique motels, but Hampton Inn and Best Western don't take dogs. BIG THUMBS DOWN TO THEM!!! Anyhoo, I digress. She welcomed our canine friend and we got our key. It's an old fashioned motel, however very well maintained. The room was spotless. The decor very nicely done. Bathroom was lovely with updated fixtures. We slept like the dead on the super comfy bed. In the morning, I was so very pleasantly surprised to find premium coffee and half and half in the room, instead of the usual undrinkable swill with the chemical cocktail dry creamer. The property is lovely. I would so highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a place to stay! We were so pleasantly surprised! read more

Just spent one night in this motel and we were so impressed. This is not your typical roadside motel. From the first moment we arrived in the welcoming office which was softly lit and 'artsy", we had a good feel. The room was small but immaculate and had a classy feel in a simple way. There were 4 bottles of water, FREE! A very sweet table and 2 chairs outside every room to enjoy the beautiful view. The grounds were nicely manicured with interesting sculptures dispersed throughout. The next morning the continental breakfast was so much more! I have to hand it to my mama- she really does know how to pick 'em. This is such a beautiful place- the views, the landscaping, ugh, I know I'm gushing. The rooms were spotless and well cared for, the bathroom was spacious enough, the amenities were all there and I could watch River Monsters on cable. You can see all the personal touches - the color scheme of the wallpaper, the shades of the lamps, the overstuffed armchairs. Very delicate and matched the vintage feel of the town perfectly. What a dump, keep driving! When we walked in our room I thought this has to be a joke. The room resembled a shack from an old black and white movie that a sharecropper would stay in. The pot to make coffee looked like it was made in the 1960's. The motel is located on the edge of town and looks a bit run down from the road. We should have kept driving to Shaftsbury where there are some cute motels. We won't stay here again or recommend it to anyone we know. read more

Was very happy with my stay at Harwood Hill Motel. The rooms are inviting and the motel a nice break from a boxy hotel chain. There's plenty of nature around to relax and art (sculptures and paintings) throughout so you feel a unique stay. The motel is a short drive from the highway and was convenient for my event in Manchester. Their Saturday and Sunday breakfast included fresh fruit, eggs, juice, bagels and top shelf yogurt. read more

Really, really great place. The motel is incredibly clean, the owner is super friendly, and the area it's in is just beautiful. There's a nice large common grass area where you can see a horizon full of mountains and trees. There are hammocks, swings, and a fire pit. It's next to town, which also happens to be really cute. This place makes for a lovely stay. They have separate cabins (each with lawn chairs in the front) and regular motel rooms. We stayed on a Saturday, there was free breakfast in the morning. I would definitely recommend staying at this place. There's no motel in the area better than this one. read more

The two of us stayed in one of their cottages on a Friday to Saturday. It was clean, quiet, private, and with a beautiful view of the mountains. The manager was very kind. The Continental breakfast had many options, and we brought the whole thing back to the cottage to eat. In summary, very peaceful and relaxing. Perfect stay for leaf-peepers! There were 3 of us that stayed at one of the cabins which was clean, simple, cozy, and affordable for families. The front porch was a perfect place to just sit back, relax and have breakfast while enjoying the beautiful mountain view. The owners were really friendly and their pets make for a nice welcoming committee. The motel is close to the Robert Frost Stone House and The Market Wagon which carries delicious bottled milk and ample local VT foodstuffs. The Publyk House is also just few steps away for the socially and gastronomically hungry. Looking forward to going back in autumn and share the gem that is Harwood Hill Motel. read more

Very average. No plush towels here. No flat screen tv. Basic outdated decor. Thin bedspread. Matress needed flipped or replaced. But I gave it a 4 because they are very fair on their prices and do not try to gouge you and it was clean. Very honest people. Very clean even if outdated. read more
