This review is all about customer service. I have stopped in to The Hawthorn twice in the last week and experienced exceptional service each time. Its always been good, but these were notable experiences. Last Saturday night I stopped in at 10 PM by myself while my wife was out with friends. There were only a couple tables still occupied. I told the bartender that I had sold a dinner for 6 at a local non-profit fundraiser and I needed to get up to speed on dessert wines because I had promised 4 wine courses with dinner. The bartender walked me through a couple options, let me taste a couple then poured me my choice (typical process here that you can taste before you choose). He left and a couple minutes later, Jill, one of the owners came out and offered to show me some more options for my dinner. She proceeds to spend 15 minutes with me walking through the range of options and pouring me 5 tastings before I settled on a great Pablo Ximenez. Tonight my wife and I stopped by after work for a drink and their great chicken liver pate. I told Jill that my wife has not had red wine for 30+ years but expressed interest in trying it again. Jill talked to her about her preferences, then walked her through 5 tastings before she settled on a Spanish Garnacha, which she loved and we walked out with a full bottle. The Hawthorn was packed, but Jill still took the time to make three trips to our table to help my wife find what she wanted. We stopped by to grab a glass of wine and had the best time! Besides being such a cute spot, they had the best service. Marita was wonderful and helped us out since we're not from the area. She was so nice and we loved the great conversation! Zack was our server who was great as well, very nice people overall! This place is awesome!! The decor is European, modern and very cool. The wines are great. They let you taste the wines before you order which is a pleasure and nice if you're not sure what you want. wait staff is super friendly and knowledgable and fast. Their chicken pâté is Amazing!! Loves the cheese plate and the jimmy crack corn (I've been 3 times- ordered something g different each time). So glad this place is in Helena. They're now open staring at noon. We came in on a Friday night, and the place was packed! They offer wines by the glass, tasting flights, or bottles (there is a corking fee for a bottle purchased on site, but there are lots of decently priced options). The staff is friendly and knowledgeable - the bottle our waitress recommended was delicious, and just what we were looking for. Definitely ask the staff for help - it can be difficult to find what you're looking for, especially on a crowded evening, as the tables/seating is right next to the shelves. Amazing place. Beautiful decor, community table (made with parts from a local bridge, we learned), etc. Prices are reasonable and service was great. Great food and wine, including flights. A nice classy addition to the Helena food scene. Definitely a sophisticated feel to the space, however Colleen and Jill the owners are super accommodating - even to our kids (yes kids are allowed in). Cheese board was delicious, as was the wine "on tap." Great beers too! Overall a solid 5-star place. The fact that they have only been open a couple weeks makes it even more impressive. They should get an honorary 6th star for their good work! read more

Visited The Hawthorn while attending a college graduation and this place is great! Pleasant, knowledgeable staff, fun decor and nice wines for purchase. You can purchase by the bottle, glass or flights and we thought the prices were very fair and the pours generous. We didn't have any of the apps but they looked good. I hope The Hawthorne is around for a long time! read more

We were in the Hawthorne on St. Patrick's Day and had an exceptionally nice experience due to the knowledge and attentiveness of Marita, one of the newer servers working there. Her experience from having lived in a famous wine appellation, rubbing elbows with the owners of wineries that you read about in the Wash. State wine promotional literature, made her an absolute delight to interact with. Although my favorite variety of wine was not featured on their current menu, when I inquired, she said, "I have something in mind." And boy, did she ever. She let us sample two wines that were near what I asked for, and we settled on an especially excellent one that was first one she recommended. It isn't often you find someone as knowledgeable as Marita outside off NAPA, Walla Walla, or similar areas. Do yourself a favor and patronize this establishment and enjoy some exceptional service and delicious wine. read more
