First time experience. Food 3.5/5 Price 3/5 Customer Service 0/5 If the customer service wasn't so horrendous it would have been a 3.5-4 star from me. The food wasn't bad, at all, nor was it a long wait; solid 3.5 maybe even 4 out of 5. Pricing isn't bad, or good. For what you get I personally feel it's slightly overpriced, but not outrageous, solid 3 of 5. Customer service, horrendous, especially from the lady at the register. We walked in at 1:10, they close at 2. She asked if we were ready and we explained how we had never been here before. Her response was, "well, we close at 2" then walked off. We thought it was closer to 2 with her response, we were surprised to see it's only 1:10... We got a 7 inch and 10 inch sub, fries and, a small drink, $31.00... As we are eating all we heard was complaining, and mention of how they close at 2... they turned the close sign over around 1:30. Anyone who walked in wasn't greeted with hello, or anything other then. Do you have a pickup order? A gentleman came in about 1:35 and tried to order and was treated absolutely horribly. He had read online they were open until 4 which he stated. She of course said, you guessed it, we close at 2. Being 1:35 the man looked at his phone and said okay, it's only 1:35 then. She refused to take an order. He asked for a paper menu, with a correct time on it as he was leaving. She grabbed a menu and just threw it on the counter in front of him. He exited. Why he even asked for a menu is beyond me, I would never come back. As soon as the man left lots of complaining, about people placing orders knowing they close at 2. "These people know we close at 2", "What part of 2 do people not understand", ect. Loud enough said comments could be heard in the dining area. Absolutely ridiculous behavior, treatment, and comments. We get it, you want to be out at 2, we will save you the hassle and never come back. It's one thing to close your kitchen a few minutes early, but 45 minutes earlier than your posted closing time? I would suggest posting a new order deadline if that's the case; if you have 2 posted on the door is reasonable to expect orders to still be taken up to 1:30, and honestly, orders up to 2 unless specified. If we heard "we close at 2" one more time I thought I was gonna go insane. We cut lunch short and got out as soon as possible, because I hate to think how anyone in their restaurant at 2 would be treated, I'd assume forcibly removed. read more

My wife and I live in Crestline, so we have recently been making excuses to drive to Wooster just so we can get Sandwiches at the Hero House We usually will get meatball and cheese with fresh housemade meatballs, lots of sauce and lots of cheese, and a cheesesteak sandwich of some sort This is a great and honest family run business, not some large chain where everything has to be done a certain way. You pay a little more maybe for getting a sandwich here but the sandwiches we have a gotten have all been made with love and they are just so good Just a little hole in the wall establishment but the food is well worth it! read more

Just to let you know it has been over 40 years since I last had a hero sub. My husband and I where in the area and ordered a couple of subs to go to eat at jafb. The subs were just as good as I remembered. We went to jafb to eat our subs, while in line to get our beers my husband had eaten half of the steak and mushroom sub! He said he couldn't help himself. I want to start out by saying that I love the Hero House, and their food is top notch. I've been a customer since 1993. The place really hasn't changed in 30 years, and it doesn't need to. I live in Cleveland, and will drive down to Wooster just to grab lunch a couple times a year. Their sandwiches are amazing. It's a one of a kind, independent small business, and I love to give them support whenever I can, and they always seem happy to see me when I walk in. My only complaint, and it's a major one, is that since the pandemic, they have been very irregular with their business hours. They say that this is because of staffing problems. But the pandemic lockdown ended years ago, and they still struggle to find enough people to work for them to keep to their posted hours. I don't think you can blame the pandemic for this any longer. It has to be the pay. If they paid the staff enough to retain them and stay open, I bet they'd make up for it by not losing sales opportunities that they can't take advantage of because they're not open. In the last 2 years, I've driven down there at least a dozen times, if not more, hoping to get a sandwich for lunch or dinner, only to find out after driving an hour to get there that they weren't open, because they decided to close the shop early, or because they decided to take the day off. I've only managed to eat there twice in the last two years, and if I do the math it seems like they're open only about 10% of the time when I've tried to eat there. It's sad. I'm afraid if they don't turn it around soon, they won't be open in another year or so, if not sooner. I'm rating them 5 stars in this review because I don't want the review to hurt their business further. They need customers. Go there, order, eat, enjoy. Just call first and make sure they're really open. But if I'm being honest, their tendency to never be open when I try to go there during normal hours makes my real rating 2 stars. I hope they read this and decide to do something to keep to their posted schedule, and drum up the sales volume they need to pay their staff well enough to keep the place open when it's supposed to be. read more

The absolutely best subs I've ever had. When my husband wanted to order from here I was a little weary about it. It was strange that there was no website and the place looked old. However, when we pulled up to pick our subs I was shocked! I absolutely loved the drive thru with the door bell. It doesn't get any more authentic than that. We ordered a Regular sub and a Grilled Chicken sub. Let me tell you, they were both FANTASTIC! Both of the subs were absolutely delicious. Lots of reviews about the food, would have loved to have tried it but the sign says open and the doors are closed. Watched numerous people walk up to door only to get turned away. Cant try the food if you won't let me/us in! If you're short staffed, just close. Don't say you're open if you can't take orders. Open for over 40 years, the Hero House looks nearly the same - unassuming storefront and nothing special decor. Most tables were full and a steady stream of customers came in to place counter orders. Service was prompt and polite, but the lady at the counter was not overly friendly. As I waited for my order, a much friendlier man took over the register. I waited about ten minutes for my Mushroom Steak and Fries. The food was freshly made and piping hot. The sandwich was served in a commercially made hoagie roll but the innards are the reason to eat here. The combo of thinly sliced grilled steak, provolone, caramelized onions, mushrooms, and mushroom gravy was an ooey, gooey, yummy mess! The crinkle cut fries were hot, perfectly crisp, and lightly salted - well done. The restaurant does smell greasy and I had to wipe off my own table at the end of the lunch rush. But, I didn't stop for ambiance. I stopped for food as good as it was when I was in college. Give the Hero House a try for a quick, reasonably priced, delicious lunch! read more

I'm torn. In one sense I really love Hero House. However, I want it to be so much more than it is. (I now understand how my wife felt while we were dating and not yet engaged...) Hero House is a place I've visited countless times. The cheesesteaks, (particularly the deluxe version), are really good. It's a guilty pleasure food. It's not healthy but it's really satisfying. The only gripes I have are with the location and service, which are two very big gripes. The interior looks exactly the same as it did when I stepped foot inside it over 15 years ago. It's not an overly welcoming place from the front. it doesn't scream, (or even whimper), COME INSIDE! Cleanliness doesn't seem to be a priority, either. (Flies, sticky floors, permeating essence of grease throughout the entire place.) The last few times have been frustrating too. It gets busy. I get it. The staff gets flustered with the volume of food being demanded by customers, which has been compounded even more since the introduction of a drive-thru window. However, I'd like to see a priority placed on customers that are right there in the shop. I waited over 10 minutes at the counter without anyone acknowledging me during my last visit. It was only right before I was going to leave that someone asked if I needed something. Hero House has a great product. I hope their customer service and outward appearance catch up. What looks like a hole in the wall at first glance, and upon entering presents itself as a hole in the wall, with dirty tables, greasy menus, and uncomfortable seats, becomes one of the greatest lunch (or dinner) experiences of your life.
