Welcomed at the door by a nice gentleman, seated my friend and I in one of the many booths. The atmosphere in the restaurant wasn't loud or boisterous, very calm. The TVs were muted, the radio played at a medium level of classic rock, nothing hardcore. We received our menu, I was looking forward to ordering wings after hearing about how good they are. I saw the price, $17.99.... But you only get 8 wings.... 8.... 8 wings for almost $20.... Then I decided against that and ordered the Montreal Smoked Meat sandwich, only to find out the sides were another $3.99... for French fries.... Inflation on a potato jumped a lot at this restaurant. My parents met at this restaurant back in the 70's, I hear many story's of big partys and good times being had here.... Those days must be long gone with the price rates on the menu. I enjoyed the Montreal smoked meat sandwich and had a Caesar to wash it down but that will be my last meal here unless prices change. There's no reason for price gouging on fries and 8 wings for $17.99..... that's insane. I couldn't justify paying that for 8 wings, or even getting a side fries for $3.99. read more

We have been 3x to the Hilltop. The first time we explained that I am diabetic and asked to swap out French fries/potatoes for veggies or a side salad and the staff was great and did so at no extra charge. Second time, they refused and it has been a year so we decided to give them one more try. Unfortunately, they still refuse to swap out French fries for a side salad or a veggie without charging the extra charge for it. However, my husband ordered meatloaf and was given the option to swap out his coleslaw for veggies??? Wouldn't the veggies cost more?! Our waitress was great but the management sucks and the willingness to work with people who have dietary restrictions is non existent. I settled on a single burger because my glucose levels can handle a bit of carbs but not as much as the fries would cause me. So sad that people would have to pay $6-8 extra because they can't eat potatoes/fries to eat something healthier that isn't more expensive. Three times is the last time. We won't be back. read more

Stopped in for lunch with a work colleague. Usually a pub is a decent place for lunch as they tend to have a good selection of sandwiches, burgers, pizza and lots of selection of moderately unhealthy but tasty food! Feel of the place is true pub style with big booths and a big central bar in the middle. For lunch I chose one of the specials (jambalaya). I asked the server if it could be done between medium and hot. It came out perfectly spiced to my surprise. I say this as spice is a relative area in cooking. What one person's definition of spice may be much hotter or much milder for another. All in all I was satisfied but not blown away! read more

I spent a lot of time here in my younger days, way to much likely. Then they turned it into a restaurant style place, food wasn't bad, pub style, good prices and cold beer, bottle or on tap. They have a buffet often, usually Chinese food, the last time we were there it was like pouring a salt shaker into your mouth, absolutely pitiful in our opinion, damn shame, it used to be 'the place' to go on the weekends... The beer is still good, the food, meh, take it or leave it, I will go back, just not so sure on the buffet anymore. read more

When I lived in NB while attending university for 4 years, I used to go to the Hilltop quite often with friends. Everything I have had here was pretty good and they are usually quite good at cooking your steak the way you asked for it. The prices are reasonable and I would recommend going for their specials. I have never tried the Chinese type buffet they do there now but I have heard it was good and it seemed popular. They also offer a variety of other dishes, like sandwiches, burgers etc My only complaint is the first time I tried to come here, I was 18 (did not turn 19 until 2nd year of University), but I was with a friend who was over 19 at the time. We sat down and both ordered water/Pepsi, I then went to the bathroom. When I came back the server explained that we had to leave because you have to be 19 or older, or with a parent...it was like 5pm and there were other families in the restaurant. I did not understand this concept; I know in NS certain restaurants that serve alcohol do not allow children or people under 19 after like 9pm, but this was ridiculous. Once I turned 19, I got over it and came back and enjoyed it. Unfortunately, by 4th year I stopped going because I stopped eating meat for the most part, and wanted a change. Overall, I would recommend coming here if you want a good steak meal, or want to have a yummy meal but not spend a fortune. read more

Agree with the previous reviews. Large restaurant, casual food that is okay but nothing special. My kid loved the popcorn machine (free) that you can help yourself to while there. Small selection of beers on tap. We shared a feta flatbread to start (average) and I had a Montreal smoked meat sandwich (quite good actually) and hubby had a grilled cheeseburger. This one was unique - basically grilled cheese cut in half made up the bun. Super thick to bite into and not enough burger:bread ratio. Okay service. Food came quickly for our group of 10. One of our favourite spots in town. The staff is friendly and quick and we always have a good experience. Their steak is excellent and our waitress had good knowledge of the menu. Everything we've tasted there has been great. Good prices and good portions, and the atmosphere is nice. Stayed in a near by motel and was recommended by staff. Easy walk after driving for the day. I shared the seafood chowder with my husband after reading the positive reviews. Pretty good with large chunks of seafood. I had the lobster roll. Keep in mind that when they ask you for a side it is not included in price of the meal. My husband got the lobster capellini. Good taste but smallish portion. My son had the fish and chips. Nice that the staff was able to swap out the chips for another side to be healthy. Nice crispy fish. The accompanying carrots and celery for the kids menu was anemic. The meal was pricey for what it was but it did hit the spot and service very friendly and fast. read more

This place is a favorite of mine; the staff is friendly every single time I'm here. It's away from all the pubs downtown, which I like. I know that old reviews from 2012 complain about the bland menu, but they have since changed it to include plenty of flavorful options. My personal favorite so far is the lobster nachos. The Hilltop Pub has always had atmosphere- at one time it was a good place to eat. But in the last few years, the food has been sub-par or just plain bad. Food is left to sit for long periods at the pass, and often arrives cold when it reaches diners. We ate at another pub restaurant in Ellsworth Maine this summer - the comparison to the Fredericton Hilltop is like apples to, well, turnips maybe? The Hilltop still has great atmosphere, nice big booths, and a well-priced breakfast - but they could do so much better! For the near future, we will try Dolan's, Wetmore Street Pub, anywhere but the Hilltop Pub and Restaurant. read more

This is a roomy restaurant with plenty of booths and seating. The waitress was friendly and fast. We were here for supper Friday night while in the city and again today for breakfast. We both had steaks and fries with gravy Friday night. Steaks were cooked perfectly the way we asked. Today we stopped for brunch which they had a special of 6oz ribeye one egg, deep fried potatoes and toast for 13.99. Steaks and eggs were once again cooked to perfection. I don't know if it's just me, but my coworker and I agreed that the food in Fredericton is quite bland compared to the states. Hilltop was certainly no exception. I ate here two nights in a row having a steak one night at the waiters suggestion and some sort of pasta dish the next. we r senior citizens and my wife wanted 2 c a menu. we were told that we could only order from the lunch menu. last time we went with another couple and were given complete menus. what gives? we were told to come back at 3 p.m. if we wanted to have the meat loaf as the kitchen would only cook what was on the lunch menu. u do not tell the customer what they are to eat. it is my choice but I will not make that mistake again. last time 4 us to eat there. read more

Appetizer was great, but took so long to arrive that our entrees came right after. Entrees started to get cooler as a result. My wife and I were given only one serviette with appetizer and no cutlery. When we finished our appetizer our waiter was no where to be found and our entrees got cold as we waited. I finally got up to try to find someone to provide cutlery. When I found a host (not ours) and said we had no cutlery she replied with "All you have to do is ask". My girlfriend (at the time) and I had been going to the Hilltop for years as our restaurant of choice and always with delightful service. Like many times before we where guided to our table and seated in good fashion. The server arrived promptly and took our drink order, ordering a beer off the tap for myself and my girlfriend ordering a soda, The server then asked me for my ID. Being 21 at the time I took no offence, showing my ID and joking about how young I look. She then asked to see my girlfriends ID as well. Not having her ID on her but being only 18 we let her know. She then told us that that we would not be able to order anything and needed to leave. I was shocked and asked her why, and her response was that her being underage meant that she wasn't to be served. Now I'm a very patient (young) man so I tried to explain to her that we had been coming to the Hilltop for years together. She stood fast that she would not serve us, I asked if I took my beer order back and just had a soda would that make a difference, which she said no. She again called on the fact that my girlfriend being underage was the reason. Looking around the restaurant I noted more then a dozen young children at tables with there parents and asked how these children where allowed to be here if this was the case? Her response was that they were accompanied by an adult and thus allowed to be here. By this time the tables around us where listening to the situation and both my date and I were extremely embarrassed about this. I told the waitress we would leave but that I would be back to see the manager about this the next day, and bidding the tables around us to enjoy their meals since we wouldn't be...we left. Fast forward to the next day. I was working a day shift in Fredericton on the Ambulance and before picking up my lunch I decided to stop at the Hilltop to talk to the manager as I said I would. When i went in and asked to speak to the manager I was told that I wouldn't be able to see him/her. I asked if the manager was busy and was told that it was none of my business and that I wouldn't be talking to the manager. My work partner laughed and asked how a business was run like this, and again we left, with the promise that we wouldn't be returning and would pass this story on to those that would listen. Some visits were worth 4 stars but overall I would settle on 3. The popcorn has always been a nice touch. Decent beer and food but a bit on the pricey side for what it is. Servers are mostly all prompt and friendly. I've been here many times but I would find it hard to judge this place on one visit as it can be hit or miss on several fronts. Be careful where you sit when you visit, service is not the same in all parts of the restaurant. My elderly in-laws were in on April 19/13 and received luke warm food and never did get refills on their coffee even though their coffee was finished by the time the waitress brought their food. They even had to ask another sever for their bill and inquire again as to how to pay. Customers who arrived 5-10 min after they did received wonderful service and their food before my in-laws. The service they received made them late for an appointment. So my advice would be - if no server arrives within a few minutes of being seated, move to another part of the restaurant or go somewhere else altogether. read more

Couldn't decide what to eat as I was hungry. Waitress recommended the burgers. I ordered The Big Steer Burger but without the BBQ sauce. It is a double paddy burger with bacon, cheese, onions, tomatoes, lettuce. Each patty is 7 oz. I had a house side salad to go with it. The burger was as large as expected with 4 large strips of bacon and just the right amount of cheese. The house salad was ample with a very nice house dressing. I would highly recommend that you sit in Shannon's section as she is very knowlegable about the beers on tap as well as the wines. My husband took my mother in law, myself and our three kids to the hilltop for Mother's Day Brunch and it was awful. The selection was dreadful, including fried balogna, for heaven's sake. The fish cakes were good and there were a lot of them but, fishcakes are not to everyone's taste. My husband's steak was incorrectly cooked, my daughter's poutine was "Meh." (her words) and my youngest daughter's food arrived at almost the end of our meal and was singing hot, she was not able to finish it before we left, by the time it cooled off it was time to go. My mother in law and I did not eat much from the buffet because the selection was poor and a lot of it looked old and dried out. My mother in law is a retired cook and was certainly not impressed with the choices. From what I could tell, the person in charge of the buffet put the cheapest dishes he/she could cook in there. You cannot charge a full price for a buffet and then serve budget food. If I had wanted fried balogna in sauce and fish cakes, I could have stayed home and cooked it there. It is certainly not the Hilltop of my youth, when Tassos was the head chef and the food was brilliant. My hubby and I are sad to say that we won't go there again, nostalgia is not enough to bring us back for overpriced, mediocre food. read more
