More like the Home Nightmare. I hired them to re-caulk two showers and repair one kitchen cabinet drawer. They asked me not to use the showers 48 hours in advance, so I did. On the day of the appointment, I waited around until 5pm, when I called to confirm they were still coming. They didn't answer, but called me back about 30 min later to say that there was a mix-up and that they weren't coming. To their credit, they did come the next day, but the technician was very confused about what to caulk in my showers. We watched a youtube video together, then he caulked the showers. I was very nervous at this point, but trusted him. Of course, after waiting 24 more hours to use the showers (and now almost a week of showering at the gym), I find that the shower leaks!!! I contacted the company and they promised to look at it when the drawer technician comes out. Well, that appointment got rescheduled 2 times. I was getting pretty fed up and asked them to commit to a time. That's when Pete, the manager, tells me via email that they cannot ensure that a shower won't leak after they caulk it. At this point, I had no confidence in this company and asked for a refund for the one shower and to cancel the drawer repair. They refunded me $75 out $200 wished me luck disputing the remainder with my credit card company. A total waste of my time and honestly the worst customer service I've experienced in Philly (and that's saying a lot!). read more

My puppy chewed every single corner baseboard in our home. They looked awful and we wanted them fixed. Thought we'd have to replace them all. Another contractor came in and made it look worse. Then called Home Hero. Very easy to get an estimate and schedule the services. Maurice came in and made them look beautiful again. He was on time, respectful, neat, and knew how to fix it. Great job. There are 5 star reviews that exist because everything went right. And then there are 5 star reviews because something went wrong, and the company MADE it right. This is the latter of those two scenarios. Home Hero came to install curtains, a TV and a few rods and the first person they sent out wasn't quite able to finish the job due to the fact that we lived in a high rise and the studs were actually made from impenetrable steel (Who knew!). We had a few smaller issues with the work as well. None of it irreparable but we were left dissatisfied enough to let Home Hero know. They IMMEDIATELY reached out to us and asked how they could make it right and went through great effort to do just that. They sent a second person back out and finished the job. I was incredibly impressed with Pete (The owner, I gather) and his team's unquestioning devotion to making sure our work was finished and to our standards. Things go wrong on jobs. It just happens. And that's going to happen with ANYONE who comes into your home in a handyman type capacity. But after working with Home Hero's, it should be appreciated that not every contractor will go the extra mile to make sure you are happy with the work, and go back in and correct it if you're not. Please don't mess up your house and lose a ton of money. Home Hero is charming but that's it. The work is expensive and quality inconsistent. While Pete is at first quite nice, he will defend his workers' poor quality work and give you the runaround. He will tell you that you need to give them chance after chance to fix their shoddy work. This is ridiculous as I wouldn't hire someone to keep practicing on my home until they get it right. Especially for the high price tag. Also, workers will begin showing up hours late or not at all. Home Hero will tell you that they are "getting supplies" but it's just a thinly veiled line for no-show. After one great experience and an awful second experience, I won't be using Home Hero again. I caution anyone against using them more than once as the work quality can decrease significantly. I used to think the small number of negative reviews for Home Hero weren't true or overblown reactions. Now I'm part of that group and totally agree with the other negative reviews. Save your money and time and most importantly, your home. read more

I had a grab bag of maintenance items around the house to take care of and, being of only passable handiness myself, decided the expenditure for hired work would be worth it in reclaimed time and quality of end product. Work (that was not all that extensive) was initiated last year and finally finished this March. So to start I will say my reattached bathroom towel rack and caulked up kitchen counter have given me no issues. I don't think they were ever the more difficult projects, but I likely still would have paid for them to not have to deal with it myself since they're tasks I might have made a mess with. Next I had a fence slat to be replaced, so I breezed over the confirmation of that on the invoice. Only at the end of the work when I realized I had one entirely different slat against the rest did I realize the invoice said "Leave stain/paint ready." I suppose that's my miss, but there's no way they didn't know that would have been work I wanted as part of the project, and I'm therefore not pleased by having been surprised by it. I can't really surmise how having the slat already attached is more paint ready of a state, and it's very much counter to the purpose of paying someone else for the work to take it off my hands. But that can still be my miss. Next we arrive at the door sweeps, seals and back door frame that most compelled me to reach out for assistance, since trying to work in the small gaps around doors has always been a source of frustration, and since the back door frame would require some carpentry skills to fix up nicely that I simply didn't have. Starting with the sweeps and seals: Both my back and front door sweeps had started to come apart for whatever reason, again, I hired labor so I didn't have to diagnose it myself, and had strands of the torn rubber jutting into my house. Also, each door had gaps in the seal you could clearly see through to the outside. I'll just make a side note at this point my contractor through Home Hero had to make at least three return trips, I lost count beyond that, to complete his work that I would still consider subpar per the stars on this review. I note that just to say it took several times reiterating on a return trip the air gaps were still noticeable for them to finally be filled. Anyway, within a few weeks of the work completion the new front door sweep was split again with trailing rubber in the house, so great work diagnosing and repairing my issue there, and the new back door sweep has a gap through which you can see to the outside. Cool. But then the bit of carpentry that I was most calling for assistance on. The frame on my back door was definitely a shoddy job by the initial installer, and a lack of proper sealing had resulted in wood rot in the top of the frame, and in the bottom of the the door knob side of the frame. The bottom bit was cut out and replaced with a new bit of wood, which is definitely the work desired, but then it was in no way shaped to the frame itself, and so shines as a clear and conspicuous patch, which is never the end state of a home project. But the work on the top was even worse. No effort was made to install new wood there, despite my invoice explicitly stating (under "Custom Carpentry" no less) such items as: -Remove brick molding as/if needed -Cut out damaged jamb on outside of door -Install new wood/molding -Reinstall brick molding as needed Obviously no work was done on the brick anywhere on the frame, which I can't say if should have been done, that's not the issue here. The issue is the wholly rotted top was simply dug out by my contractor and replaced with layer after layer of wood putty. That's not carpentry and NOT a job I EVER would have hired someone to do for any price. As you might expect much of the top of the door frame is still soft (or empty) from the hollowing out wood rot, and merely a matter of time before it splits open again, I'd give it less than a year. And of course again no effort was made to match it to the rest of the door frame (or I think at this point I can safely say the contractor lacked the proficiency necessary to match it to the door frame), so even visually the bit of work stands out quite conspicuously. But by the end, I kind of just paid the invoice to get it to go away, but it's obviously weighed on my mind since hence this review. I'll also make one more note somewhat in the purview of this review. I had some leak somewhere that had show up in the drywall of my downstairs ceiling. Home Hero said they don't do such work and gave me a referral, but after some work put in by their associate, and some (obviously) conspicuous dry wall patch work in my ceiling, I now quite clearly still have a leak, have less money than before, and my ceiling looks noticeably worse than before even where there are no signs of a leak. But I'll forego further comment on that service since I can't blame Home Hero for it beyond just advising against their referrals as well. read more

I've had a run of bad luck with incompetent and unresponsive home improvement professionals lately. And this unresponsive company is part of my problem. I simply need four floating shelves installed on my kitchen wall. Oh, and a little patch work on the wall where the last guy from another company botched the job. My wife found Home Hero online and we were impressed with the positive grades and reviews. So we got an online estimate from Home Hero during the summer. Approximately $500. Sounded steep. But I'm so frustrated with the task I was willing to pay up. I admit, it took me a few weeks to find some availability and reply back with an agreement and request for their visit. But that's no excuse for them now ignoring my reply. I wrote them a few weeks ago and called about one week ago. No reply at all. I'll tell ya, all these contractors nowadays must be rolling in the dough; because they just love turning down jobs or ignoring my calls. read more

I am really pleased with how The Home Hero runs. Pete was at our house within 48 hours of an email for a quote. Leah runs a responsive and organized office and we just had Josh at our house to install several cabinets in our children's room. Josh is skillful, methodical and quick. He solved the hanging arrangement of our shelves by a combination of brackets and making his own supports into the studs. We are having them back to install a fan and other shelves. I would recommend to family. Very pleased. Note: People complain about prices alot on yelp. You get what you pay for. This group is superb as their craftsmanship shows. I can't say enough good things about The Home Hero. First, their marketing is genius. Their "Schoolhouse Rocky"-inspired logo stuck in my brain. My hero zero! Five stars for marketing. Then, I visited their website, which explains exactly what they do and don't offer, has referral service for what little they don't offer, and allows you to send photos and descriptions electronically of the job(s) you want done so they have an idea of what you want before their inspection visit. Five stars for web design. Then the business owner personally visited to inspect the site. He kept in constant text contact, and even asked to come early, to which I readily agreed. He did not keep me waiting, was very congenial, had a real can-do attitude, and even talked me out of rushing into certain jobs now, which really impressed me. Five stars for responsiveness and integrity. Within HOURS, his manager had emailed me a detailed quote, a work schedule, and a referral for HVAC services. I had a question about certain details, and she was very responsive and willing to work with me. They asked me to pay half down, and the other half when the work was done. I was able to pay with a click of my computer touchpad from a link in their email. It was so easy. Five stars for that part too! Then the company sent me email reminders of each day of the work schedule. I have had such bad experiences with contractors in the past, that even after all this professionalism, the cynical part of my brain kept thinking, "yeah, for all the reminders YOU'RE sending ME, we'll see if your workers are punctual." He was! One guy came for three visits. He came on time, did a great job with each visit, and cleaned up after each phase of the work. I even had to pick up my kids from school, bring them home, cook and serve dinner while he worked, and their buzzing around him didn't phase him! He demonstrated the utmost professionalism! He finished the work on time, kept to the schedule, and shook my hand as he left. FIVE. STARS. If every contractor operated like The Home Hero, our world would be an ecumenopolitan utopia. Whether you are moving in, moving out, or simply want to improve your home, the Home Hero is a great resource. Recently, Randall came out to our house to repair some minor issues that have resulted in major improvements. The top of the stairs is not threatening to break off; the metal toilet paper roll is now firmly affixed to the bathroom wall and doesn't fall to the floor with a loud clang every time you pull on it; and now the entire family can hang their coats on nifty wooden racks instead of tossing them on the floor or the banister. Service was prompt, courteous, and professional. We will definitely use them again as the need arises. UPDATE: Every repair they did broke or did not last one year later. We've used the home hero in the past for around-the-house work like installing light fixtures, etc. We had a special job last week involving both "normal" work (lots of bookshelves to secure), as well as "odd jobs" - stringing our tree with 100 lights (required the use of a very tall ladder) and anchoring some major Halloween decorations. We got lucky because the hero they sent this time had a background in theatre. This came in handy when we needed to somehow prop up/weigh down an enormous, inflatable, animatronic dragon on our roof. The gentleman took stock of the "odd" needs, drove to Home Depot for supplies, and returned to begin work. Our shelves look amazing. We had a zigzag style in mind he understood what I was trying to explain and executed it flawlessly. Our dragon is perfectly perched on the edge of our roof for maximum Halloween fun. I am not a frequent reviewer but felt that I had to go the extra mile for this company. I'm fairly picky about repair and service men coming to our home after bad experiences. I was really impressed by The Home Hero and Chris who baby proofed our home. Our home is not typical and required a lot of creativity to get the job done. Chris was extremely capable and creative, building out new areas out of wood where needed, matching the paint to our stairway, and going above and beyond to stabilize the gates. These guys did not oversell me and were very up front about what works and what doesn't (eg don't waste your money on our cabinet locks just go by your own). Chris was kind, creative, and unobtrusive. They came in cheaper than the competition. Loved working with them and likely will again. read more

I used the Home Hero for a day's worth of IKEA assembly. The pricing was $450 for a 7-hour package (I basically furnished my entire 1-BR apartment and am too incompetent to put stuff together). Nino was my assigned handyman - he was prompt and helpful, and very careful to remove all the boxes and cardboard when he finished. The owner, Pete stopped by too to make sure that everything was going as planned - customer service is definitely their priority. They all seemed to have a good understanding of which parts did what. Impressively, Nino also did eight hours' worth of work without eating nor peeing - definitely superhero levels of impressive (or I hope their health insurance covers UTIs, haha). Also, I wouldn't say they are very quick so because of that I'd have to say that I think they're pretty pricey. Home Hero is Faaaaaan-freaking-tastic!!!!! OK so I had another contractor do some work in my house & majorly C#cked it up. That same contractor wanted to charge me hundreds more to fix HIS mistakes - are you kidding me.... So I did what I should have done in the first place checked Yelp, I always trust yelp and lessoned learned. I got the half day handy man package with Home Hero and I have to say sheeez the guy that came out Chris was amazing...... fixed the mess the previous contractor made & did a waaaaaaay better job, he then put together a basketball hoop for my 7 year old son in my backyard & also did an amazing job installing a swinging chair that hangs from the ceiling for my son. There were absolutely NO corners cut with Home Hero and it seemed like no job was too big or too small for Home Hero. If I ever need work around the house again I WILL be calling home hero again, even the office staff were friendly and helpful over the phone and unlike other contractors they didnt expect all the money upfront. I paid half when I booked & half upon completion..... All other contractors need to take a lesson from Home Hero - YOU GUYS ROCK!!! read more

I'm not exactly Tim "The Tool man" Taylor and neither is my husband, so thank goodness for The Home Hero. We both work full time and have two small children, so we don't have much time for projects around the house. I was overall very satisfied with the work that we had done. We had an awkwardly shallow "Sunday Best" closet that I wanted to convert into built-in shelves. I was going to do it myself (even got wood from Home Depot and the L-brackets, and looked up Youtube tutorials about how to use a drill) then months went by and I never got to it. I got frustrated of looking at the materials in the corner of the room so I called the Home Hero. I'm glad I did because it turns out the wall was not drywall, but brick. And the wall was uneven too. Pete came by and did a walk through with me and emailed back an estimate promptly. Once we scheduled the job, our contractor Josh spoke to me again and once he realized it was brick, changed the game plan and was able to build the built-in shelves with a new type of aggressively threaded screw and he did a neat job so you couldn't see any hardware. You can tell that Josh is passionate about what he does and that he keeps up with how tools evolve over time to make things stronger or jobs more efficient. When someone is good at what they do they make it look easy. But that doesn't mean it will be easy for you! Josh was professional, punctual and courteous. When I had to keep home my sick baby from daycare, Josh made sure not to do noisy drilling into brick while our son was napping. I didn't have to ask him to do that, he did it on his own. Instead he did the "quiet work" (painting and caulking) until our son awoke. And he didn't leave a mess anywhere. As a mom of two small kids who are always leaving messes everywhere I very much appreciated this! As for people who have complained about the price, yes it is much cheaper if you can do it for yourself. For less laborious tasks like caulking or painting or even simple plumbing, you can look up how to do something online, buy the materials, do the job, clean it up, etc and save money. But when tasks are more involved, and you just don't have the time, then Home Hero is great. It never hurts to get an estimate. Once you know the numbers you can decide if its worth it for you or if you'd rather try and learn to do it yourself. For me, the price was worth it to not deal with the headache. read more

Easy time scheduling, Randall got a lot of fixes done around our office. Moved a TV and remounted, fixed a hole in the floor, and installed door handles/paper towel holders/etc. Now I'm the office hero without any of the work. He also called me the night before so he could pick up the supplies he would need instead of waiting until the day of to have to leave and run out for supplies, which I really appreciated. Jeff and Leaf just finished a demo today of our master shower. They removed all of the wall tile, the floor, sill and pan under the floor tile. They showed up exactly on time and finished the whole job within about 4 hours. They removed all of the tiling and flooring with precision and cleaned up everything after they were done. They were super friendly, knowledgeable and professional. We've already scheduled them again to replace the sub flooring in the master shower. Would highy recommend! read more

Flawless. Pete was prompt and professional when he came out to do the estimate. Jeff and Brock were AMAZING. Their attention to detail was very much appreciated. They treated our home like it was their own. We had our bedroom remodeled - removed built-in closets, moved electric, mounted tv, assembled IKEA closet system, new hardwood floor, new ceiling fan, new door, built radiator covers, painted. All in all - was a super quick turn time. I can't say enough good things about this experience. We had two contractors come out to look at the job and then never return our calls (and they were recommended by friends). Next time - I know I only need to call the Home Hero.
