We are so please to have found Rittenhouse Handyman. A little backstory: we have a condo in Philly, our son used to live there and now it's a rental. We needed work in a ceiling that had been cut out to do a/c work. The contractor left it as is. Our tenant and us, just let it go, to be fair, but now since he's moving, we had to have the work done. I had emailed and called the handyman that the property manager uses for the entire building. I thought he knew the place and since it was familiar to him, a no brainer to use him. After waiting and leaving several messages, absolutely no response whatsoever. I found Rittenhouse Handyman on Yelp. It was very easy to schedule and appointment. No hassle at all. I sent them a picture of the problem and they sent me a fair estimate. What's really amazing is that they were responsive, easy to schedule an appointment with, and they showed up and did the work as promised. They did the work and they kept their word. Folks, we know how hard it is to find good people that keep their word and stick to it. I'm amazed how easy it was to schedule an appointment. We have two other rentals in the boonies in the Sierra Foothills in California and getting people to call you back and actually show up to do the work is hell. It's literally hit or miss and we have dealt with a lot of bait and switch folks, too. They quote you one price and lo and behold, there's more stuff that needs to be done. **This review isn't based on work done but rather exorbitant quotes** I reached out to Rittenhouse Handyman as well as their two top ranked competitors to fix a 2'x2' spot of drywall ceiling where a leak used to be. They quoted me $600 while the others quoted $475 and $500 but as they were available immediately and the others booking 3+ weeks out we figured it was worth it Bc we are about to show our home for sale. They cut into the ceiling and found the leak was still slightly active so a plumber needed to come deal with it first. No problem plumber had it done the same day and we had time scheduled with them the next morning too so I reached out to find out if they could still come or needed a couple days notice, but this is where it gets dicey.... I made the mistake of mentioning I needed it done sooner than later in my email to them Bc of the home showing and magically the job (which they had pictures of ahead of time) became $1000 to repair. I wasn't about to pay double for this without any real technical explanation other than the size being larger (which it absolutely wasn't) so I confirmed the cost with their competitors (the one we went with ultimately was a 5.0 star rated South Philly service) who was now available in under 1 wk and they completed the job beautifully for $475 in ONE day (Rittenhouse was saying they needed to come back 3 different days I have no idea why when it's something that could be done in AM then finished in afternoon or next morning after it dries.) I'm sure they would probably have some story to rebut this but I would just say look at my review history I rarely leave a non-4/5 star review which I think should speak for itself. They may very well do top notch work but I felt strongly enough about this to write up this thorough review so well...you decide! Hope this helps someone make a wiser decision. read more

I'm literally appalled by Tim O's response. Since you clearly are asking me to spell out the tasks requested, I will oblige. Task 1: I asked that my front door lock be swapped out for another Baldwin lock that I purchased. It turned out to be a very simple task handled by another contractor. Yes, Rittenhouse Handyman DID send out 2 service people, and they were unable to complete the task. Thus, time was wasted. Task 2: I asked that the front door numbers of my house be affixed outside. A relatively simple job requiring a drill. For some reason these same service people asked that I get front door numbers that were all connected. Thus, that task was not completed. read more

I had additional questions, so I replied to the email and also called twice (though the phone number is not on the website and was somewhat difficult to find). 8 days later, there has been no response. They used to be good. In the last year I have noticed a decline in their service. They charged me for two hours when the job was only 15 mins. they gave me inflated quotes for several jobs in the last year and I thought it will get better but it didnt. I thought if I reason with them they will understand, but to no avail. The last job was not done properly either. when I talked to their front person she was unrelenting and rude. very bad customer service. I will never use them again. we found two other handymen much more sincere and honest and we are telling all our friends about this experience and recommending the new people to them. read more

Hired and told them I have metal studs in my ceiling and I needed suspended shelving done. They sent 2 contractors who informed me they couldn't do it as it would be a safety concern and they couldn't hang my curtains from the ceiling either. So I'm not sure what kind of what they can do, maybe hanging pictures? I only wish they would have told me in advance instead so I didn't have to take a day off. Total waste of time. read more

Awesome service! Nick was timely, friendly and efficient. Above all, they were reasonably priced. I had 11 mirrors hung, and halfway through we decided I would need a couple more to fill the wall. He planted the screws for me so when I purchased more mirrors I could just hang them with no problem. Nick is truly the best! Our consultation began with prompt email exchanges. I opened a business that needed the track lights adjusted. My ceilings are 15 feet high, so you can imagine what a difficult feat that would be without a very tall ladder. Tim was 5 minutes early, professional and kind. I sent a request through their website late one night and they were in contact with me the next morning with a quote (lower priced than the other companies/people I reached out to by $50-$100) and to schedule an appointment, which was within 5 days of my initial inquiry. I notified them that I had very specific requests that needed to be fulfilled (removing and replacing various smart devices with standard devices I.e. nest thermostat, smart deadbolt, lightbulbs) without anyone being present to instruct them or show them where to be. Thankfully that wasn't an issue as it was elsewhere. They came prepared with the supplies that I advised they would need in order to complete the job (dead bolt and lockbox) and they did everything I asked for so quickly. They even sent me pictures when everything was complete. They were on time, gave no objection to any of my requests, and more importantly, they provided great, trustworthy service all around. They were able to email me the invoice and I was able to easily pay online once the services were complete! They deserve your business. read more

The quality of the work was good for the first two or three times I hired them. Then it went way down fast. The foreman arrived in a huge rush to get my work done. He didn't want to do certain tasks that had already been agreed to. His helper dropped a screen out the window, six floors down, and nearly hit a pedestrian -- and tried to HIDE the fact from me. Would highly recommend. They helped install my oven hood and worked quickly and professionally and left the kitchen area very clean. While this would normally be an easy job, I discovered some interesting construction choices from prior homeowners that made the installation more complicated which is why I called Rittenhouse Handyman. Finally getting around to writing this. I purchased a condo late last summer to be used as a rental property. It didn't need a lot of work but needed a handful of things to be done - install bathroom medicine cabinets / mirrors, install screens on some windows, and a fresh coat of paint on everything (and a few other minor issues). Nick was the only person that I met with and he was knowledgeable and got all the work done in a timely manner while doing a quality job. The fees/rates charged were also reasonable. Would recommend these guys for any of those jobs around the house you don't know how to do or just don't have the time to do. read more

We had Rittenhouse Handyman install 2 ceiling fans for us in July of last year. We purchased a variety of braces and fan-rated junction boxes to have available for the install because we were replacing simple light fixtures and weren't sure what was up there. The installation seemed to go well and the installers told us the existing junction box was already fan-rated and, lucky us, we didn't need to do that extra work! We happily returned the supplies we had purchased. Unfortunately, we immediately had problems with one of the fans - a burning-type smell as well as a shaking/shuddering. I reached out to Rittenhouse Handyman and, to their credit, they promptly sent the guys back to look at it. They essentially told me the issues were due to the uneven ceilings in our 100-year-old rowhome and the fact that we bought lower-priced fans. Both of these things happened to be true, so I said thank you and they went on their way. However, we soon found out the burning smell was due to the fan being installed to a light switch with a dimmer, which if you aren't aware (which we weren't) is a bigtime no-no and fire hazard. Again, to be fair, I recognize these guys aren't electricians but I feel like they should have known this and pointed it out so we could remedy it with the proper contractor! Fortunately I caught the issue myself with a quick google search and we called an actual electrician and had the problem fixed right away. As for the shuddering, we continued to chalk this up to their comment we had bought low-priced fans, so we finally bit the bullet and purchased 2 new, high end fans this week. We had the electrician come back out to install and to my dismay, he pointed out (and showed me) that the junction boxes were in fact NOT fan-rated and the ceiling fans could have fallen down at any time. This is especially alarming because one fan sat directly above my 3-month-old's play mat in her nursery. I encourage Rittenhouse Handyman to be more attentive. Both the dimmer switches and junction box issues should have been on their radar and if they had felt that addressing these issues was outside their scope of service they never should have accepted the job. read more
