During a recent ski trip to Jay Peak, my group and I visited this cozy local restaurant with high hopes, given the limited dining options in the area. Overall, it offered a unique experience, though not without a few drawbacks. To start, the appetizers were fantastic. We shared the beef tartare, mussels, and crab rangoon. The beef tartare stood out for its flavor, though the accompanying baguette was slightly stale. Despite that, the appetizers were the highlight of the meal. For soup, we sampled the French onion, which was met with mixed reviews--decent, but not particularly memorable. The main courses included kangaroo, venison, fish and chips, and duck. While the chef's talent for creating flavorful dishes was evident, all the meats were unfortunately overcooked. This may have been due to the challenge of preparing multiple meals at once, as we were informed that there was only one chef in the kitchen. The restaurant itself boasts a charming and homey ambiance that enhances the dining experience. Service was friendly and accommodating, with no issues on that front. A standout feature of the menu was the inclusion of kangaroo--a rare find, especially in Vermont. While it's worth trying for the novelty, be prepared for its distinctively high iron content, which imparts a metallic flavor that may not appeal to everyone. In conclusion, this restaurant offers a unique and enjoyable experience despite a few missteps. The friendly service and cozy atmosphere make it a worthwhile stop for those visiting the Jay area. Just keep in mind that the kitchen's limitations may impact larger parties or more complex orders. We dropped by here for dinner. The INN is really gorgeous, and the restaurant was smaller than expected and intimate. We ordered the antelope Swedish balls, French onion soup, and firecracker beef. Most of the food wasn't great - the antelope Swedish meatballs were the best of the 3. The French onion soup had too much thyme and a very watery broth. The firecracker beef was offensive!! It has a warning that it's very spicy (which is true), but it was a really strange dish! I expected an Asian inspired spicy beef dish over rice, but we got a hot sauce drenched rice bowl. Allegedly there was beef in it, but there was really no texture or flavor other than hot sauce! To clarify to the owner comment - we did tell our server we didn't like it, and that it was not due to the spice - it was due to the gross flavor. She simply said "oh I haven't heard that one" and did not offer to take it off the bill or replace it. Now the drinks and desserts were fantastic! We loved our seasonal cocktails, and we ordered two desserts and polished them off. The maple chomeur was drenched in sauce and so good - we actually poured the remaining sauce over our apple warm too! I loved the fresh apples in the tart since there was some texture. Cannot say enough good things about this place - an intimate, cozy feel in a small New England town. The staff is extremely friendly, kind and attentive. Our coats were graciously taken and hung up when we arrived to allow for a more comfortable sitting experience. The restaurant sits below an Inn in the town of Montgomery, a short drive from our Airbnb during a weekend ski trip to Jay Peak. The cocktail menu was unique with several staples and an impressive selection of hot cocktails - perfect for the cold weather. The actual menu was impressive for a place seemingly unequipped to handle such culinary design. In our party of 6, everyone ordered a different protein and not one was chicken or beef. I had the lobster ravioli special- huge chunks of meat topping off a generous serving. My boyfriend was feeling adventurous and got the kangaroo steak, which he's never had before, and raved about it the rest of the weekend. All in all, this has got to be one of the top spots in the Jay Peak area. Make your reservation and make an effort to get here. read more

We went on Saturday without a reservation and due to Covid were not able to be seated. Our phones didn't work and no places in the area had any availability when we were driving around due to Covid restrictions. The host was incredibly Nice and said he could call other restaurants for us to try to get us seated somewhere! Then we did make reservations for Thursday night. It is a nice restaurant and the food was good. The host, again, was very welcoming. Our server was ok, not the friendliest though. We had to have our temps taken and also had to wear masks when the server came to the table. read more

We had an amazing girls weekend at The Inn. We had amazing service from Nick and Scott, you can tell that they not only love what they do but they make an amazing team. There was just this feel of comfort and coziness throughout. The rooms, they let us take a peek in all of them, were each somewhere I feel I would have loved. The beds all super comfy and rustic. Loved not having TVs. The location is on beautiful trout river banks and a short drive to Jay Peak. Scott cooked 2 great breakfasts and made some great cocktails! Our dinner there was memorable. Our waiter Rob was a pleasure and very tolerant of the large group and such fun. The Chef cooked a great, really great meal. We wanted to stay for weeks on end but unfortunately we had to head back home. Thanks for an amazing weekend and we'll be back soon read more

The food was actually out of this world. The breakfast (included in the cost of the stay) was consistently delicious (my favorite was the eggs benedict) and the dinner options were varied and incredible. I had one of the best margaritas I've ever had at the restaurant! Came just for a nearby wedding, but loved our stay so much, we've been talking about going back during ski season one year just because the Inn was such a gorgeous experience. read more

Five stars comparative to the surrounding places to eat - if it were in a major city I might be a little harsher, but rest assured, this is the best place to eat, drink and hang out in the Jay Peak area in North VT. The building and the decor are something else. It's like a reimagining of what a cosy country inn should be. Over the top in a very charming way. The sitting room is wonderful - crowded with every kind of kitsch country inn decoration you could imagine (look out for the glass coffee table that is balanced on an upside down bear cub!), replete of course with a blazing log fire. The restaurant is equally full-on, and it feels comforting just to enter it. Plenty of Americana and Vermont-icana on the walls, and it has a calm, welcoming bustle to it. The bar serves reconstructed craft cocktails and a good selection of beer. The draft handles are Long Island's Blue Point Toasted Lager as a permanent fixture, and three rotating handles for local craft. We sampled 14th Star's excellent Valor Ale and Fiddlehead's IPA. The wine list is the right length, with plenty of options, very fairly priced. The menu is a reflection of the slightly zany ambiance - hearty country fare with a few twists here and there, such as the presence of Asian style dishes. The prices are high for the area, but then so is the variety and quality. We had deep fried avocado slices, the Vietnamese style soup & baked smoked feta to start - all generous portions. For mains we had two steaks, a chicken Pad Thai and two baked salmon steaks. The meat across the board could have been a little better prepared (none of it was melt-in-the-mouth), but everything was well composed, seasoned and was nicely flavorful. We sampled two deserts including the "Baked Vermonter", a maple syrup heavy take on a Baked Alaskan, which was ever-so-slightly off the mark in execution, but laudable in concept. By a "country" mile the best meal we had in a week in the Jay Peak area, and just a fantastic place to spend time. Also worth mentioning that the service was superb and the attitude of all staff and owners (one presumes) extremely polite and welcoming. If there is one place you go to eat and drink in the Northern Kingdom, this should be it. read more

I only make it up this way about once a year and have slowly made my way through the different restaurants and bars in the area (and when you're in this part of VT you have to make it pretty big "area" to compare any great numbers of anything other than cows). The INN has been on the list for the past few years but we (family) finally got around to it and enjoyed every bit of our meals/drinks. The staff was great. The Inn's restaurant is the best one in the area, and probably even more. I was there with my fiancé several times. their food is fresh, tasty, and unique. They even have few vegetarian/ vegan dishes that were absolutely amazing. We took the salad, salmon, rice with tempeh/ sweet potato that were delicious. the best part was the dessert of the maple apple bread- WOW! (and I'm not a sweet fan). We came from NYC and this restaurant is at the same level of many high-level restaurants in the city. The service was excellent as well. I highly recommend it to everyone! read more

Second time's the charm apparently? Came in with a group of seven without much notice, Nick graciously accommodated us. I ordered the pork chop, which came with sauteed apples, an apple brandy sauce, mashed potatoes, and vegetables. The pork chop was great. Not perfect, but moist enough. The sauce and sauteed apples worked well with it. Now the mashed potatoes? Those were fantastic. Fluffy, and not too filling. The veggies were really what stood out: snow peas. Steamed perfectly with the right amount of salt. Did not order dessert this time, so I can't speak to the oversized Oreo being updated or not - but the portions were certainly quite a bit more in-line with where they should be. We had the most amazing time at The Inn last night! Cocktails and socializing in the lounge by the fireplace before dinner was unforgettable. Every piece of furniture was comfortable and inviting and made you feel like you were relaxing in someone's home. I love the eclectic décor. And to top off the wonderful evening was the outstanding food!!!! We had two different duck plates that were to die for and my personal favorites! Wonderful inn and restaurant. We were nervous to take our first COVID-era trip, but the innkeeper did everything right to make us feel welcome and safe. Room was wonderful -- creative, comfortable. Dinner and breakfast were delicious. Super dog friendly. We hiked. We biked. We played in the river. We read books on our private deck. Hard to imagine a better weekend getaway in this time. Our favorite spot for dinner while staying at Jay Peak! The service was spot on and the food was delish. We shared the special salad (candy cane beet salad with a delicious blood orange vinaigrette), my husband loved his flat iron steak and I enjoyed the salmon with spaghetti squash (a nice break from the endless carbs on the mountain). The chef was happy to accommodate my 3 and 6 yr old kids with plain ravioli and a burger. Good food, nice atmosphere and great service. We were at jay peak this week and ate at Alice's table, Belfry, Jay Village Inn, and finally the Inn Restaurant. The first 3 were all medium, but The Inn was fantastic - outstanding food/setting/service. We had fried pinko avocado, salad, blackened salmon w spaghetti squash in an amazing sauce, and a "no burger". The beer list was good - the desserts amazing (especially the profiteroles). Unfortunately only opens thursdays and weekend nights. Will spread the word to our friends who ski Jay. read more

While staying in Montgomery over the winter we loved the little quiet old town and this place is an Inn as well as this wonderful restaurant called the Inn and just a beautiful north country style interior. Beautiful sitting area out front with a fire place and many couches and chairs to sit have a drink and relax by the fire. The bar area very nice and the restaurant large and open and cozy all at the same time. Wide selection of American fair and specials and all was very good from service to apps, dinner and dessert, we will be back here as well. read more

We got four appetizers to share: the soup special which was sweet potato ginger, the pork belly soup, the lollipop lamb chops and a flatbread special with kale, porcini mushrooms and sausage. Excellent place for casual or fancy occasions. The restaurant has a formal dining room and a warm atmosphere bar/bistro place. The menu is always changing to adapt to local produce. The chef is excellent. I would recommend the special of the day, it is always succulent. The Inn has just added a new "terrasse" for your comfort. I never stayed overnight, but I have heard they have been remodeling from A to Z the place with good taste. read more

I am confused, my boyfriend and I have been going to the Inn on the weekends for brunch. When we got there today another couple was waiting and the doors were all locked. A sign pinned up on the board said the hours on Sunday were 12pm-8pm. So it was obvious that the hours were changed because before we knew the place opened at 11am. We waited for about thirty minutes and rang the door bell, but nobody opened the door. We were really disappointed because the place is great yet nobody was there to come to the door? The least you can do is make sure the signs pinned are up to date. We drove 30 minutes out of our way for nothing. read more

Dinner was fantastic. The portions were plenty big enough and the dessert was modest, as a dessert should be. We were there to eat a nice meal, not be gluttons. The Chocolate Budino, reviewed in another recent post, was absolutely fabulous. It did take 15 minutes, but that's because it's a lava cake that needs to be made fresh. It was not a colossal dessert. If you're looking for that, check out the commercial chains in Burlington because you're not going to get that here. The Chicken Saltimbocca was first rate! SO delicious. Husband had the Blackened Wild Salmon on a bed of Spaghetti Squash, which he thought was absolutely fantastic. Appetizer was the Fried Avocado. Say What? You read it right. Never had it before, can't wait to have it again; really well done. Specialty cocktail for me was the Elderflower Ginger. Very good. Overall, a great dining experience. We had our 8 yo daughter with us who pretty much goes with us everywhere. She is used to places that are quiet/intimate but she enjoys the rowdy crowd in common restaurant chains as well. If you have fidgeters in your group, pack an iPod or a Kindle because there isn't anything there to occupy them. In all fairness, we didn't ask if there were crayons because we don't usually need them. We've eaten at the other eateries in the area and have enjoyed ourselves there, and we really can't say a bad thing about them, however, The Inn raises the bar to a new level.
