What an establishment! For a busy skiers Saturday night the food was spot on perfection. The owner who is the chief in the back cooked a table of seven's meals so good I went to tip him not knowing he's the owner and he respectively declined. I came in with the guys and we were definitely the rowdiest of the guests, in a respectful way. I kept my peace and did my thing which was observing everything going on around while the rest of the table did there thing. The lady who greeted my buddy an I when we first walked in was very energetic which she needed to be as she was one of two servers on the floor. The other server who served us also was the bartender. So in a nutshell, if you come across this scenario and or see similar conditions please be kind, respectful, and most importantly patient as this will not be the quickest service. Use this time to enjoy the company around you with anticipation of a delicious meal coming your way which at that point time means nothing. A 7:15 reservation turned into a two plus hour enjoyable night. Lets talk food. There were a lot of specials on the board. I had blackened swordfish, one person ordered chicken parm, there was one other chicken dish and the rest of the table ordered some kind of steak dish. A recipe for something to not come out correctly. As the food was being brought out I watched the waitress return a plate of fish n chips which initially I thought was my meal and they were going to have to rush cook mine, I was wrong. My swordfish was placed in front of me and I drooled after my first bite. The rest of the table shut up as they too were devouring their plates. Wish I had leftovers but I cleaned my plate of every last pice of rice and scrap. Dessert. I wanted a carrot cake but was convinced otherwise to try the key lime pie by the server who greeted me. There were two orders of carrot cake on the table so I was able to try it and that if definitely a top five carrot cake in my books. As for the key lime pie, it was ok. Not really the flavors I was jiving for after my meal and don't really have many samples to compare it to. Wasn't bad, just wasn't personally for me. We were pleasantly surprised by the dinner we had at Bernie's! I had chicken and a salad while my husband had the soup of the day and salmon. All was good! My friend and I had lunch ,she ordered the burger and was asked how she would liked it cooked, She said medium, what she got looked liked a hockey puck, looked dry and definitely overdone. it came with a slice of tomatoes and lettuce leaf , frankly Mc Donalds would have been better, It was served with a small side of homemade fried which she said was good. I had the tuna melt on thier house bread . The sandwich was very big and seemed to have 2 cans of tuna in it. The taste was good just abit overwelming. What an amazing find. We were staying near Bernie's and tried it out for their Monday night fiesta night. They were very busy but Barb was amazing at the front. The burritos, enchiladas and quesadillas were amazing. Awesome flavor and felt very authentic. My wife went with the chicken Marsala and that was also awesome. Felt like you couldn't go wrong with anything in the menu... Chelsea was also crushing the bar. The margaritas were amazing. Try the spicy!! There is a front dining room and then the bar in the back with more seating. The ambiance is amazing, feeling like you stepped back in time a little. This was the first restaurant my husband and I went to eat in Vermont. It's such a cute little place with a history. Just by looking at the walls, you can tell this place has been around for a long time! The staff was super friendly and the food was good. The night we went they had two menus, their regular menu and a Mexican menu. My husband and I ordered a sandwich and burger. The wait for our food was over 40 mins (and it was not full at that point). We were starving so we did ask why it was taking so long and they came out with the food 5 mins later. I went there today for the 1st time excited to try something new. This place definitely did not disappoint! The food was delicious cooked to perfection, best wings I have had, their food is super flavorful. My steak was cooked to perfection with a nice char (medium rare)And decided to try thier sweet potato maple cheesecake because I love cheesecake and it was amazing. It was a solid four stars for breakfast. When we walked in, we were told it would be a while until someone could take our order, but a server came over to us a couple minutes later, so that was great. Wife had eggs, I had pancakes, and we shared a side of bacon. Everything was cooked great. The coffee was good, but not real hot, which I prefer. Good value for the money. I've eaten here quite a few times and I've never really left satisfied the food just tastes like it comes out of a box and such. I was seated around 5 pm one night and they took our drink orders and I ended up waiting 2 hours and 45 minutes before me and my family ended up deciding to leave. The service and staff members are very nice though just not on top of their game as much as they should be. And as for plating it looked liked they just threw the food on. What a fun place. First of all the staff is welcoming and helpful and friendly. We came here for Mexican night, which was delicious and pretty authentic considering we were in Vermont. Mexican night is a long-standing tradition at Bernies, and includes terrific margaritas, house made guacamole, house made chips and salsa. The enchiladas had a rich mole sauce and were filled with a spicy pork filling that was really spicy and filled with flavors. No typical American Mexican food here! We checked out the menu for normal days and it was filled with a good selection of comfort food and a variety of proteins. We had a group of 10 and my wife asked the waitress to take a pic of us in which she replied, "didn't have time to do that" and walked back to the empty bar and sat there. When ordering the food ask if the prime rib was fresh and was told yes. Ordered medium rare. Came out (2 hours later) well done with no flavor. Told the waitress that it was not medium rare in which she responded that was medium rare for them. Prime rib was more like roast beef with no flavor. Others at the table ordered the pork chop which was cooked so much you could not cut through it. We tried to talk to the owner but he would not come out from behind closed doors. Food sucked. I want to give this restaurant one star. But I have to say this first - the food was delicious. Really, it was very good, flavorful and arrived hot. Unfortunately, it was not quite as hot when we ate it. This is because it arrived two hours after we were awkwardly seated (they had no idea where to put our family of five in their tiny space). After seating us, we only got a chance to order because my husband went after the waitress and told her we were ready. We're glad we ordered an appetizer- it arrived about an hour after we ordered so at least we weren't starving the whole time we were there. Apparently they have bread to tide you over too...it only arrived with the appetizers. We saw the server maybe three times in those two hours - she didn't refill our drinks or come over to apologize for the wait. The only time she apologized was when she brought our plates about 15 minutes before the food came out. Here's the catch - we have a baby. By the time the food came out, it was after his bedtime. We had to get boxes for the food and go eat at the hotel because he was cranky after two hours of sitting in a high chair. Bernie's was highly recommended by several VT locals so we ventured off Jay Peak and into town. Glad we did. For dinner, I had the Turkey Dinner - a complete Thanksgiving meal with fresh, moist turkey, 2 mashed potatoes, mixed green veggies and cranberry sauce. We stayed at Jay Peak for the weekend and decided to try out Bernies based on the reviews. Unfortunately I have no idea how this restaurant received all of these great reviews. This was by far the most uncomfortable dining experience my family has ever had. When we walked in we were brought to a 4 person table squeezed in to the middle of a small room in the very front of the restaurant. As we were seated a waitress very loudly said to the woman seating us that she had no way to walk by and asked why she sat us there. It was very clear that only locals were in the restaurant and even more abundantly clear when an older gentleman seared at a large table behind us very loudly said why are they still here, pointing to my family. We were given menus and no drinks were listed. The menu was standard fare and not realizing that there were any options we ordered water and soda. It would have been nice to have been told that the restaurant had a full bar or specifically what drink options there were. We ordered very basic items and they were all disgusting aside from the kids grilled cheese. The cheeseburger was so inedible that I had 2 bites before pushing it aside. Wanting to quickly leave the horribly uncomfortable environment we asked for the check and paid. As we were leaving the chef and waitresses stared at us as we walked out, not saying a thing. If you are not a local I would stay far far away - there are many better dining options a short distance away - try the Big Jay Tavern and you'll be much happier read more

If not for the food being as good as it is, I would definitely only give one star but as a previous employee, this isn't about the food. It's about how the staff are treated which is more like servants then employees. They get yelled at when things aren't perfect and are never given any breaks. The restaurant is the owners life and he expects it to be the staffs as well and yells at them if they can't make it to work. Even if they have a medical issue he still wants them working if they can't find someone to cover their shift. No one is ever granted any time off for a vacation at any point throughout the year. I also don't remember any of the staff seeing a penny of the covid relief that the owner had received either.
