I'm not gonna lie, her Mai Tai rivals the Bali Hai, and yet is actually tasty straight out the gate. If you have had Bali Hai Mai Tai's you get it. That ice needs to melt. This Mai Tai is flavorful and tropical right away! They don't claim to be Tiki, Hawaiian, or anything else, just a cool blend of Island Vibes. The Poke is on point with a sweet and salty thing. That sweet onion really lifts the poke, wish there was a little more. So sweet. The Tuna is so fresh and tasty it melts in your mouth and it's just a great starter. Having been to Giovanni's Food Truck in North shore Oahu I wanted to try the North Shore garlic shrimp. The flavor is good but I think the slaw and sauce overwhelmed that flavor. I can't be mad because it was still delicious and they are still getting their footing. The staff was very helpful and I hear a walk up breakfast bar with a Moco Loco is coming. Checked this place out while staying in Coronado. The decor is super cute and the staff was very nice. We sat at the bar and had great service. I had the Sandy Apple to drink, which was very good, and my boyfriend had one of their kombucha drinks, which was also tasty. The burger (OG Leroy's) for dinner was excellent! Well cooked and the jam was super good. The fried chicken dinner on the other hand was very disappointing (we probably should have sent it back since we couldn't eat it) - there was far too much breading on it, very little chicken, and the chicken was a little slimy, seeming as though it possibly needed more cooking time. I'm local to Point Loma but went over to Coronado to see the lights in Coronado at the Del. My friend and I were extremely hungry and we walked around everywhere to try to get in and eat dinner around 7 o'clock but every place that is a good restaurant was packed. We were next-door at the Henry trying to get in, but there was an hour wait so we kept walking and stumbled upon this place that was not crowded at all so we are seated right away . We ordered the shrimp ceviche appetizer for $17 which was literally 5 tablespoons of food on the smallest dish you've ever seen. The shrimp were basically small shrimp that was cut up like it was bay shrimp, mixed in with a little pineapple and onion, and a ton of chips. It was fresh with no flavor. My friend ordered the garlic shrimp dinner plate. For $29 there was six shrimp and basically 2 ice cream scoops of macaroni on the plate with a little tiny cup of peas, carrots, and edamame that tasted like cafeteria food and probably frozen not fresh for again $29 can you say effing rip off? I was so angry between the ceviche and this $29 dish tourist trap ripoff. Lastly, the teriyaki chicken skewers finally came, which were three skewers for $17 with about 3 inches of chicken on each of them. On the little plate was 5 micro slices of cucumber and 12 carrot shavings. It was a nice complement to the skewers, but there was 1 teaspoon worth. It would've been nice to put a handful on the plate so I could enjoy it with the skewers. The chicken was cooked perfectly, and had a great flavor, which was the best out of what we ordered. Now the disgusting part was we were still hungry and the bill came to $74. Can you say tourist trap? I don't understand how this place will stay in business. I would never come back here ever and I would advise anyone coming here not to walk in the front door as you are wasting your time and money. There are too many better restaurants within walking distance that I would have waited an hour for, and would've been happy to pay double of what I paid for better food quality, and actually walked away full. They will be out of business soon!!!! You have been warned. read more

I've lived in Coronado for most of my 65 years. I was so excited about a locals inspired theme restaurant. The Islander did not disappoint in ambiance or food quality. Both were excellent! I had a burger which was cooked perfectly. I also had a side order of the best coleslaw I've ever had and that's really saying something! One tiny drawback was the waitress trying to out local myself and my two friends. Lol! It was funny though no biggie. I highly recommend The Islander restaurant. The Islanders is also the name of our Coronado high school sports teams. GO ISLANDERS GO (to) THE ISLANDER!!! Should've gone somewhere else when we walked up and saw how barren it was on a Friday night while other places were bustling, that should have been our indicator but I thought we'd give it a try. Much to our disappointment the restaurant changed their menu and the selection is now very limited. I had the poke bowl which was good but my husband had the pineapple fried rice with spam and it was lacking flavor. Even the spam didn't taste like spam, almost like the flavor had been boiled out of it or it was knock off spam. You'd find more flavor from a microwaveable rice pack from Costco or Sam's. So owners, I'd look into the fixing that dish because it sounds great and looks great but had no flavor. read more

The burger tasted like 60% sugar, 40% beef. The fries weren't anything special, I'd say below average on taste. My wife's dish was 70% a heaping pile of white rice, 3 small mussels, a couple small shrimps, and a few sparse pieces of fish. The quality and taste all around could use some work. To be fair, I believe they just launched the new brand somewhat recently so they might still be finding their groove. Bottom line: mediocre quality food, sparse portions. Went in to give this new restaurant a try as the decor looked interesting. Overall a mediocre experience, the restaurant was half empty and they placed us in the back corner of the restaurant next to the kitchen and loud speaker. Then we asked for a pina colada as they specialize in Tiki themed drinks and apparently the machine was broken so the waitress said "we have really good Mai Tai's". So I gave it a try and was quite disappointed as it had a strange chemical/unnatural taste, I'm Not sure if it was the maraschino cherry or tie juice that tasted fake but not my favorite Mai Tai. I much prefer the one they make at Dukes in La Jolla. Appetizers were ok, the pupu platter was enjoyed by everyone. My entree was the fish and chips and it was almost not edible, the batter was tasteless and the fish was soaked with so much oil!! My wife ordered a salad that was bland and both my kids had the shrimp fish tacos and they said they were good. Our bill for four was about $160 which was on the high side for the quality. we all agreed after that we would probably not come back after this experience. I think Coronado is the perfect place for this restaurant! I was a little unimpressed but I am hopeful they'll get better! Monday afternoon, maybe 2 tables seated in the place. An employee walked out, said don't be afraid to grab a seat, and walked away quicker than we could respond. We weren't sure if that meant come inside or if he was just being welcoming. We waited a min longer, then grabbed a table. Took a min longer to notice us sitting there. Our server was an awesome guy! Made great recommendations for the Leroy's burger with fries, and the Kalua pork sandwich with Mac salad. Burger was awesome, the Mac was my favorite, and I love pork sandwiches but I didn't think mine was anything to write home about. I also had a Mai Tai while the bf had an Orange Ave Wit- Mai Tai was also just ok (And I LOVE Mai-Tais). Could use more umbrellas, fix shaky tables bc we noticed all around us were shaky, and maybe more training on how to behave as a host. read more

Our new favorite lunch spot on the Ave. The PuPu platter is everything! Lumpia and the short ribs were out of this world. The fish and chips were very light and the garlic shrimp tacos had the right amount of spice. Portions were very generous as well. Relatively large plate and the steak had a lot of flavor - soft and sweet. I would order this dish again. The steak was an okay size - I suppose average for the additional price. A lot of fried rice is provided. If interested, there is enough pineapple remaining to scoop out after the fried rice is consumed. We sat outside and the restaurant ensured they provided us with a heater. The bartender was polite and the service was quick. I got the pineapple fried rice and didn't add anything but the kind waitress, Kimber, said it came with sausage and spam. Super yummy! I wasn't expecting the big portion! My boyfriend got the holae ceviche. It had watermelon and tangerine so it sounded refreshing but there wasn't that many bits in the ceviche, tons of shrimp though!
