Thank god for Ella and Macy. They were able to work some magic with the reservations and get my whole family in to experience the venue. This was the highlight of our trip! If you like the speakeasy experience this one is unique. Enter thru the kitchen and exit out a hidden door. Great feel of dark and mysterious with the tiki bar sounds and feels. My family had a pretty good experience at The Grass Skirt speakeasy in San Diego! If you aren't familiar, this tiki bar is hidden inside the walk-in fridge of a restaurant. There is also another bar hidden inside called Captain's Quarters. We went for my brother's 21st birthday and had a large party of 10. I made a reservation in advance, however we did have to wait almost 30 minutes to be sat at our table. The ambiance was great and our waitress was super sweet. However, I think we were all just okay with our drinks. Maybe next time we will switch it up and try something else + their food. We had been to dinner before so we were way too stuffed to try anything, but the food looked good. We didn't wait long after which we were led through a door that look like a door to a deep freezer. We chose to sit at the bar which is our preference. We started with an Island Hopper Old Fashioned each because we love our Old Fashioneds and this one did not disappoint. The hint of macadamia nut shined through with the classic taste of a good Old Fashioned. The wifey ordered a second and I decided to try something different and got the Cobra's Bite. It was good, but it really wasn't my thing. I probably should have gotten a second old-fashioned. Then our food came out. We got crispy, bang bang, shrimp, Korean Bulgogi burrito, and Dan Dan noodles. Everything tasted great! My cousin and I tried out The Grass Skirt on a Saturday night for dinner and drinks. We were looking for a tiki bar with food, and The Grass Skirt was just that. I made reservations the day prior. I like places where you can make reservations just to drink. When I arrived, I was quickly greeted and taken to a table on the porch. I had requested indoor seating, so asked to move, as it was rather chilly. Unfortunately, they had only a communal table to move us to, so we chose to remain on the porch. Service was great throughout the evening. Our server described the drinks and appetizers, and made some recommendations. Our waters were refilled regularly. The decor was really fun. We appeared to be transported straight to a garden in Tahiti. I enjoyed the drinks. Some were a bit too sweet for me, as I don't care for sweet drinks, but, overall, I think they did a good job of balancing the sweetness of fruity drinks. My favorite with the G.S. Martini, as it really wan't sweet at all, but had a fruity flavor. They also did a great job with presentation for both the food and drinks. The drinks were all decorated with flowers or leaves, and some were flaming. I will say that the food was a bit lacking. We shared a few appetizers, but I wasn't terribly impressed. My favorite dish was the tuna tar tar cones. My least favorite was the eggplant spread, as it featured just a bit of eggplant dip surrounding an avocado, which is a combination that I don't understand. I think The Grass Skirt is more of a bar with food as an afterthought. I think it is a good idea to serve some small bites with drinks. This was the first stop on our list of holiday bars to visit and it was the perfect choice for festive drinks and over the top Christmas decor. It's a speakeasy tiki bar so you enter through a refrigerator door which is cool. The place has lots of seating options with bar seats, some tables inside and an outside patio. But I definitely recommend making a reservation. We came early on a Saturday evening and our waitress was prompt in taking our order and everything came out quickly. They had normal tiki drinks as well as holiday ones. Most were rum based but I ordered the Frost Bite ($18) which was the only holiday drink with tequila. It came in the cutest santa shark mug but $45 was too steep to buy. The drink itself was pretty good. We also ordered some food to snack on. I liked the Tuna Tar Tar Cones ($19) a lot for the presentation and taste. The Crispy Bang Bang Shrimp ($15) were also good but the shrimp pieces were small. The Okonomiyaki Fries ($11) were basic fries with kewpie mayo and bonito flakes. They were the best bang for your buck. The Shrimp & Pork Wontons ($16) came in a tasty sauce but had very little filling in them. I would come back for the cocktails more so than the food. Came here for the sippin' Santa experience. I havent experienced their normal tiki decor yet, but the Christmas decor was on point, everything looked amazing. We tried a couple of the drinks, the frost bite (seasonal - $18) & the panda's Pandan cooler ($18). Our favorite was definitely the Pandan cooler, it had a good flavor of Pandan & was such a good amount being a frozen drink. We also tried a couple bites, the tuna tar tar cones, was a bit expensive ($19) & they only give you 3 pieces, I'd skip these! I had no idea it was a speakeasy until I walked in and realized the entrance was literally a refrigerator door leading into a whole bar. It was super cool. I loved how the place looked, how friendly the staff were, and the colors and overall ambiance. I definitely recommend sitting outside, the lounge-style couch tables are perfect for big groups. We had a table of about 16 girls, and it was honestly really easy to sit together and grab drinks from the bar. The drinks were decent, and my friends ordered some of their iconic menu drinks and loved them. Prices were great, especially since it was part of the bar crawl. When you're in Pacific Beach, you gotta try this fun speak easy. You go in from the kitchen and enter the venue through the freezer door. You enter this establishment and are caught up in the fun Hawaiian pupus and plates besides the drinks. We went with a group and had most of the pupus. I loved the okonomiyaki fries, crispy fried bang bang shrimp, California roll, Korean beef short rib tacos, cucumber salad, my least favorite was the Korean beef Bulgogi burrito. The wait staff were very nice and made some nice drink recommendations. The restaurant is not too dark inside and you're able to talk to each other. We came on a Friday night and it wasn't too busy. I went to this place over the holidays when they had their Christmas bar. Lots of cute Christmas trinkets inside decorating the bar area and booths. Didn't get to see outside much since it was raining, but they seemed to have a nice Christmas setup on their patio as well. The service was fast, and the drinks came in the cutest mugs. We had a great time sitting at the bar early on a Saturday evening. We were able to walk in as a party of 2 without a reservation around 5:30. The bartender was knowledgeable and friendly in helping us pick some tiki cocktails. I got a painkiller and a Boozin Susan. The painkiller was good, but the Boozin Susan was the star for me. The cinnamon flavor in the drink was unique and delicious. My only constructive criticism is that they charge a 4% service fee on top of tax and tip, which feels as sneaky as a hotel "resort fee." They warn you on the back of the menu, and I get why their costs increase, but I wish they would just build it into the price of the menu items. read more

Went there on Valentine's Day Night. SPEAKEASY SPOILER ALERT (Disclosure: we are two 60+ year olds..) 1. The ambience 10 2. The food 10 3. The service 10 4. The venue itself 5 This place sounded like so much fun and I have been to almost all the Speakeasies in SD and looked forward to trying this one and Captains Quarters too, which I made a reservation for after this to have an after dinner drink at. I honestly thought the Captains quarters next store was the speakeasy and this was just a restaurant, so I was confused trying to find the entrance and alarmed when directed through the freezer... I thought that entrance was for Captains Quarters. The entrance was confusing and not only because it is secret but because half the people were going to one place and half to the other and all through the same main back entrance. There was frustration with several people in line. So The Grass Skirt.. Mainly I wasn't sure if this was a restaurant or a bar? I wanted it to be a restaurant. I wanted it to be a full-on Polynesian Tiki Restaurant with Hula and Fire dancers. I wanted a sit down experience with tables for two that you can sit down in a chair at and eat a meal. Yes, there was cool and fun decor and a cute (and very short) lightening storm that would occur once in a while. Yes there was an amazing selection of very well made, fun and tasty custom beverages. YES the food was very good, and I mean delicious. But the music was a bit too loud and booming for Valentines romance. And there was no such thing as a table for two. (maybe that was just because it was a busy night?) We could have either sat in the awkward and small "patio" area where you sit on a bench not facing each other, (and you also eat on a bench the same height as your seat), or sat at the bar, or at a group table. The staff went above and beyond moving us around until we agreed on a group table that we were happy with (which was not a simple feat on a very busy night) and the hostess even turned the music down a bit, which I did not ask her to do. That was super! Our waitress was very candid about her advice on my specific drink request and her recommendation was spot on. You could really tell the staff cared about giving excellent customer service. But it was still very much a 20 something spot with booming contemporary dance style music, not Polynesian as I had hoped. But that is the same as are most restaurants in Pac Beach so I should have known better. We were by far the oldest people there! Haha Don't get me wrong we had a blast, It is a cool experience and definitely worth checking out, no matter if you are 25 or 75! My friend and I stopped by here for drinks in the PB area after grabbing some dinner at Nico's fish grill. The place was a bit busy but we still were able to get seated immediately. We weren't super sure of what to get and asked our server to recommend us drinks. I got the Panda's Pandan Colada, which had pandan and my friend got the Clarified Miami Vice. We like our drinks on the sweeter side and opted for these two. I thought the drinks were unique but okay. The presentation of both of them was pretty cool, I believe that mine had a lime that was lit on fire. They did have a lot cool items on the menu, though. I did like that they had the option for food since some bars just serve drinks. Unlike other tiki dive bars, this place is immaculate and feels upscale. I have tried many drinks here over the years and have yet to find one I didn't like. This time, we ordered the Panda Pandan and the Painkiller, along with the tuna tartare. It might not look like much in the photo, but it was absolutely delicious. Dropped in on a whim and was pleasantly surprised and impressed! 1st of the entrance was quite unexpected but absolutely fun. Many classic elements with a fun undated twist is refreshing to see when the tiki theme can easily be found as cheesy or poorly executed. Our server was kind, welcoming, and helpful when chatting about suggestions and the menu in general. This has to be the first speakeasy I've been to where my dog was welcomed which is so cool. We ordered a round of boozy tiki cocktails - I loved the Smokey feathers taste & glassware.
