Pina type tropical blended cocktail. Savor it!
    C H.

If you like the speakeasy experience this one is unique. Enter thru the kitchen and exit out a hidden door. Great feel of dark and mysterious with the tiki bar sounds and feels. Cocktails were delicious and tropical. We dined tapas style and each plate had its own layers of flavor. The Photo Booth was another added bonus. I would highly recommend but I live in PB so maybe I'm biased. Can't wait to go back.

Loved this place!! We didn't make reservations but were sat at the bar as soon as we arrived I love the Miami nice / vice drink! Love a good foam The decor is so fun - super cool tiki decor and plenty of sound effects The bartender who helped us was super friendly - suggested spots in town and always on top of it The wontons and fries were delicious The tacos were good but missing a little something

Fun spot! Our drinks were good, as was the service. I had the Pono Punch. Music is loud so it's hard to talk. Decor is really fun!

My family had a pretty good experience at The Grass Skirt speakeasy in San Diego! If you aren't familiar, this tiki bar is hidden inside the walk-in fridge of a restaurant. There is also another bar hidden inside called Captain's Quarters. We went for my brother's 21st birthday and had a large party of 10. I made a reservation in advance, however we did have to wait almost 30 minutes to be sat at our table. The ambiance was great and our waitress was super sweet. However, I think we were all just okay with our drinks. Maybe next time we will switch it up and try something else + their food. We had been to dinner before so we were way too stuffed to try anything, but the food looked good. Drinks wise, I would not recommend the "Lowtide," however I would get the "Boozin Susan's World Famous Chi Chi"

Wife and I were in the mood for a speakeasy and chose The Grass Skirt. We were first in line and went into the building in the waiting area. We didn't wait long after which we were led through a door that look like a door to a deep freezer. We chose to sit at the bar which is our preference. We started with an Island Hopper Old Fashioned each because we love our Old Fashioneds and this one did not disappoint. The hint of macadamia nut shined through with the classic taste of a good Old Fashioned. The wifey ordered a second and I decided to try something different and got the Cobra's Bite. It was good, but it really wasn't my thing. I probably should have gotten a second old-fashioned. Then our food came out. We got crispy, bang bang, shrimp, Korean Bulgogi burrito, and Dan Dan noodles. Everything tasted great! I really enjoyed the Korean Bulgogi burrito I also loved the Dan Dan noodles especially with the lamb nestled in. I would say that personally I liked the decor of Captain's Quarters, which is next-door, but the food at the Grass Skirt was immensely better and the drinks were slightly better.

My cousin and I tried out The Grass Skirt on a Saturday night for dinner and drinks. We were looking for a tiki bar with food, and The Grass Skirt was just that. I made reservations the day prior. I like places where you can make reservations just to drink. When I arrived, I was quickly greeted and taken to a table on the porch. I had requested indoor seating, so asked to move, as it was rather chilly. Unfortunately, they had only a communal table to move us to, so we chose to remain on the porch. Service was great throughout the evening. Our server described the drinks and appetizers, and made some recommendations. Our waters were refilled regularly. The decor was really fun. We appeared to be transported straight to a garden in Tahiti. I enjoyed the drinks. Some were a bit too sweet for me, as I don't care for sweet drinks, but, overall, I think they did a good job of balancing the sweetness of fruity drinks. My favorite with the G.S. Martini, as it really wan't sweet at all, but had a fruity flavor. They also did a great job with presentation for both the food and drinks. The drinks were all decorated with flowers or leaves, and some were flaming. I will say that the food was a bit lacking. We shared a few appetizers, but I wasn't terribly impressed. My favorite dish was the tuna tar tar cones. My least favorite was the eggplant spread, as it featured just a bit of eggplant dip surrounding an avocado, which is a combination that I don't understand. I think The Grass Skirt is more of a bar with food as an afterthought. I think it is a good idea to serve some small bites with drinks. However, if I return, I would not go with the intention of having dinner. I would simply go for drinks an perhaps grab a plate or two on the side.

We've been here a few times since it opened and happily drive two hours one way to soak up some tiki culture. The food and service are always on point. Service is fast, and the staff is genuinely friendly every time. If you're looking for a quiet dining experience, this isn't it--but that's part of the fun. It's definitely on the louder side, as expected, with drinks flowing and guests clearly having a great time. My husband and I ordered the Szechuan Chicken Rice Bowl, Tonkatsu Ramen, Pig Mac Bao, and Pork Katsu Bao--everything was delicious. For drinks, we had the Oaxacan Dead, Island Hopper Old Fashioned, Painkiller, and the Code Breaker. Each cocktail was crafted beautifully and packed with flavor. For us, great food paired with craft cocktails is the perfect night out, and this place delivers every single time.

This was the first stop on our list of holiday bars to visit and it was the perfect choice for festive drinks and over the top Christmas decor. It's a speakeasy tiki bar so you enter through a refrigerator door which is cool. The place has lots of seating options with bar seats, some tables inside and an outside patio. But I definitely recommend making a reservation. We came early on a Saturday evening and our waitress was prompt in taking our order and everything came out quickly. They had normal tiki drinks as well as holiday ones. Most were rum based but I ordered the Frost Bite ($18) which was the only holiday drink with tequila. It came in the cutest santa shark mug but $45 was too steep to buy. The drink itself was pretty good. We also ordered some food to snack on. I liked the Tuna Tar Tar Cones ($19) a lot for the presentation and taste. The Crispy Bang Bang Shrimp ($15) were also good but the shrimp pieces were small. The Okonomiyaki Fries ($11) were basic fries with kewpie mayo and bonito flakes. They were the best bang for your buck. The Shrimp & Pork Wontons ($16) came in a tasty sauce but had very little filling in them. I would come back for the cocktails more so than the food. The food isn't bad, just a little lacking for the prices. It's a fun place for grabbing drinks with friends, especially during the holidays.

Came here for the sippin' Santa experience. I havent experienced their normal tiki decor yet, but the Christmas decor was on point, everything looked amazing. We tried a couple of the drinks, the frost bite (seasonal - $18) & the panda's Pandan cooler ($18). Our favorite was definitely the Pandan cooler, it had a good flavor of Pandan & was such a good amount being a frozen drink. We also tried a couple bites, the tuna tar tar cones, was a bit expensive ($19) & they only give you 3 pieces, I'd skip these! We also tried the okonomiyaki fries ($11), which is fries with mayo, furikake, & bonito flakes. You honestly can't go wrong with fries & we enjoyed this better than the tuna cones. Keep in mind, there is a paid parking lot & street parking, cost around $2.50/hr as this is the PB area! Overall, we enjoyed this place & would be coming back again in the future.

THE GRASS SKIRT @ SAN DIEGO I purchased a bar crawl ticket, and The Grass Skirt was my very first stop where I picked up my wristband. I had no idea it was a speakeasy until I walked in and realized the entrance was literally a refrigerator door leading into a whole bar. It was super cool. I loved how the place looked, how friendly the staff were, and the colors and overall ambiance. I definitely recommend sitting outside, the lounge-style couch tables are perfect for big groups. We had a table of about 16 girls, and it was honestly really easy to sit together and grab drinks from the bar. The drinks were decent, and my friends ordered some of their iconic menu drinks and loved them. Prices were great, especially since it was part of the bar crawl. I also really loved all the decor throughout the space. I would definitely come back to try their food.

The Christmas ambiance was stellar and reservations were easy to make. Our service was subpar - our server in the yellow beanie was impersonal, didn't check on us much and gave service to those around the fire pit bar tops quicker (others who sat after got their items before us and we weren't checked on - maybe we seemed like laggers). She wasn't warm or welcoming and asking questions about the menu or next door fell flat... I felt like an inconvenience. Luckily the patrons sitting on both of us were super friendly! It was a good one and done type of experience. Would like to come back for the normal menu!

Oh wow! The service really improved from the last time I was here! Our server, Ellie, was excellent. Very attentive and helpful. And the whole staff from the runners to the managers were great! Im so happy For drinks we got the pain killer and a virgin mojito (not too sweet) bit of them hit the spot. The great thing about the pain killer drink is that over the evening id you sip it slowly, it gets better! We started off with the crushed cucumber dish. Was very light and refreshing. I think next time I'll order it as the last dish to finish off the meal. We then had the tuna tar tar cones. They come in 3. Very unique and worth it. Then we had my favorite the Dan Dan noodles. The lamb was very tender and flavorful. Next time (since I'm dieting ) I'll ask for low oil. The shrimp and pork wonton noodles were yummy. I liked the grass like veggies on top. Not sure what it was. Then we had the eggplant dish. It's kinda like baba ganoish. Was too salty for me. But was light. Will be coming back again and again.

What a fun place. We came for the Christmas theme and this place did not disappoint. The Christmas drink selection was so cute, I got Sippin Santa, just because he looked so cool. We ordered some food which came out quick. We got the chili wontons and Dan Dan Noodles. Both were tasty. Our waitress was very attentive, sweet and knowledgeable about the menu and drinks. Thank you The Grass Skirt for your hospitality and fun ambiance.

The owners took over the property and developed a gigantic multi-level structure. By razing the previous establishment and taking the extra time to rebuild from the ground up, a marvelous job was done to maximize the space in creating five separate indoor/outdoor bar areas. The ambiance was airy and very spacious. Nearly 40 TV screens and some outdoor games (e.g. Connect Four, cornhole, Jenga) were available for entertainment. The setup was conducive for people watching. I heard they had some past issues with the security staff, but those concerns seem to have subsided. You will still likely encounter long lines in the evening, especially on the weekends and holidays. I sat at one of the bars to get some food. It took a while for the waitress to come by and take my order, but she checked up on me regularly afterwards. The menu variety was not as extensive as I expected for such a large facility. The prices were also a bit high for bar food. At my last visit, I ordered two items which may no longer be on the menu. They were a Wahoo Fish Taco and a Shrimp Truck Appetizer. The grilled fish was served on a corn tortilla dressed with cheddar jack cheese, cabbage, pico de gallo, and lime crema. Tortilla chips with salsa were provided on the side. It was average in size, and the flavor was as expected. The appetizer was like a salad with five pieces of grilled shrimp, mixed greens, jalapenos, chick peas, and a few other ingredients. The item was rather healthy compared to the rest of the typical bar fare. While the atmosphere and optics of Mavericks Beach Club were great, the food and prices were not at the same level. Therefore, my rating was between three and four stars which is where the composite average is for this business.

There's like 1 or 2 people that are still here from the old group but the new people they have hired leave much to be desired. Mind you I've been coming here for 9 years so I've personally witnessed the decline. Anyways, so Wednesday I came here with my boyfriend about 5:30ish. I guess one of the waitresses was training someone because her and another male waited on us together. The guys was cool, the girl, not so much. Now when I've come here before by myself she has NEVER been this "attentive" to me but I guess because I was with a handsome male, she had to make a point to come to our table at LEAST 5 times to blatantly flirt with him. No big deal, but how thirsty and obvious can you be? My boyfriend was the one who actually noticed it and commented on it first and then I paid attention. Not to mention it's rude to the female patron to flirt with her date in her face. The reason I know it's flirting because she NEVER addressed ME when she asked did we need anything, totally turned her back to me while talking to him, and kept giggling like a goofball. Whatever, I don't even care about that. What I care about is what happened last night because although I've said it before, last night was the FINAL straw. I ordered a Philly to-go and asked for no peppers or onions and to SUBSTITUTE (not add) mushrooms. I told the girl that answered the phone to make sure they didn't charge me $2.00 for the mushrooms like they did last time (mind you I called to report this to the manager MONTHS ago but I guess it wasn't important to her because she never called me back) and the girl proceeded to ARGUE with me about the mushrooms. Like what? I could see you charging me if it was indeed an ADDITION to the veggies that were ALREADY on the sandwich, but you're LITERALLY subbing one for the other. You're not ADDING anything. It's the audacity to argue with me about some mushrooms, ESPECIALLY when I've been coming here for so long. Better watch it High Dive before you end up like tons of other restaurants across the city who have had to close their doors after decades of being in business. You see how the 94th Aero Squadron just closed recently after almost 30 years. Bad attitudes, bad customer service, and overpriced food will do that to even the best of 'em. P.S.-I knew "Ryan G" and his estrogen filled commentary would follow. Needs to change his name to Whinin' G the way he comes on here and rails on ANYONE who states their experience wasn't good. All this heat in the comments but I can GUARANTEE they'll be NONE in person. Going out doesn't make me miserable. Encountering argumentative whack people like you is what makes going out unpleasant. Since you want to be catty and go through and count reviews, make sure you count the places that I have given 3+ stars because they have GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE, something you can't even begin to fathom. Furthermore you don't have the authority to "ban" anyone from anywhere Whinin' G. You'll find yourself and High Dive in a discrimination law suit messing around with me. Oh and you said my boyfriend could come back. PLEASE say to him what you said to me as you hide behind the safety of your phone. Also you spelled "dueces" wrong-it's DEUCES. Unprofessionalism seems to be your strong suit and maybe that's why you're old and still working in a bar. I'm glad you exposed yourself so everyone can see how you respond when you don't like something and I posted a screenshot so people can see you said what you said. That was cute by the way, "I said what I said." Did you learn that from watching NeNe on the "Real Housewives of Atlanta" my girl? Maybe YOU should find another hobby like getting an education so you can learn how to spell. Go play in traffic.
