This place is worth a visit just because I've never seen anything like it! No one is there; it's just a roadside shack that is left unlocked. You walk in and there are jams and some other random stuff, and if you want to buy it you just leave your cash in a basket with everyone else's cash that is just sitting there! It's tiny and can't have much of a selection even in the best of times; when I went it was pretty much empty. I didn't buy anything, but it sure does make a good story about my U.P. trip lol. read more

Honor system of paying cash or leave a check. There was no one on site when we arrived. Little shed filled with jams, syrups and goodies. So many flavors it's hard to choose. Around 6 bucks per glass jar, +/- a couple depending on size and flavor. I got the Rubus Parviflorus aka thimbleberry syrup for my husband's pancakes. Yum! So...my mom sent me a Detroit News article that said the weather in the upper peninsula of Michigan has produced a huge bumper crop of thimbleberries. Thimbleberries are a relative of the raspberry, and only grow in the Keweenaw and Isle Royale areas, (which are the more humid parts) of the UP*. I know...purchasing one or two jars of jam or preserves won't jump start Michigan's economy...but it's a small step helping out the little guys. And hey, trust me, you won't regret buying the jam. I have received two jars (one long gone and one savored) and like I've said before...it is *awesome*. Just think, warm toast, butter and thimbleberry jam. You've never had anything like it's tart-sweetness. The article stated that the Jam Lady expects to possibly make 500 cases of jam. Yum. Her shop is located very near the Fitz, where we stayed and had a fantastic meal. It's open 24 hours and not manned by anyone - there is a little bucket where people pay with the honor system. This could never work where I live in NYC and she would be robbed blind, but it's nice to see that something like this can exist in small town America still. The shelves are lined with many different kinds of jams and I couldn't decide what to get. I bought some varieties that I didn't know and wanted to try, such as thimbleberry, as well as some hard to find ones, including a true wild strawberry. I have been eating her jams with toast every single morning since arriving home, and the thing that I admire most about her jams is that they have a strong, pure fruit taste and they aren't too sweet. The wild strawberry was phenomenal and I pretty much ate the entire jar in two days. I want to order more of that and have her ship it if that is an option. I also adored the wild raspberry. It's a long way off the beaten path to get to this neck of the woods, but well worth your time, especially in the fall when colors have begun to show in the trees. I don't know if I'll make it up here again in my lifetime, but I advise that you all do at least once. Stay at the Fitz, have a great dinner there and soak in the views of Lake Superior before loading up on jams and driving home. read more

fabulous incredible jams from one of the best places on Earth!! I've bought the jams to use in plain yogurt and the flavors are SUBLIME! They are perfect because not too sweet but just right to sweeten and flavor plain yogurt, plus they are not too pectin-y which make them a wonderful fresh consistency. I've had the cherry rhubarb, thimbleberry, blueberry and huckleberry and they were excellent! I LOVE this place and the hours are soooo convenient to travelers passing thru. read more

I work in Eagle Harbor and I take the road that passes by the Jam Lady home every day and I often stop here to look for new rocks (a member of the family likes to collect them) but apparently if you dont buy something every time you stop, they come out and accuse you of stealing and then say "get out, and don't fucking come back." Would most definitely NOT recommend shopping at a place with such poor customer service. Meanwhile, The Jam Pot, a mere five minutes away from this horrid place, has excellent customer service and very reasonable prices. read more
