You will be told no one is available to evaluate them and your loved one may be forced to be bed ridden and diapered if no one is there to speak for them. The nurses did not even check to see if she was oriented. When the floor manager came in that evening she assessed her and most importantly spoke to her like a person and then called in the nurses and assistants to read them the riot act. My mom had knee surgery and was just there for PT. They would move her and touch her bandaged leg and had no clue why she was there. There was no communication between the shifts. She put her in a diaper despite her protests, they didn't want to get her a chair to go to the bathroom and told her she'd have to go in the diaper. This was before I got there. The bathroom was badly ventilated, between two rooms so it always felt like someone had showered recently, it only had a toilet. The food was disgusting, prefrozen meats that looked like the muscle had burst from improper storage, skinned mash potatoes that felt like hardened chunks that had been left uncovered, cold and bad coffee and what was surely jello that had been to watered to prevent becoming solid with ice cubes in it. On top of that the plastic covers for the food smelled like standing water. We brought her food and fruit every day. There is no where for family to sit. They did not bathe her even though she arrived in hospital robes. They spoke AT her. My husband noticed another woman who seemed to have been wearing the same thing all weekend. On a Sunday morning they told my mom when she was alone that her knee extension machine was broken and they would have to wait til PT came in on Monday before she could have her treatments. We showed up and asked the nurse on that shift to turn it on. She walked in and set it up. It was never broken, they had just taken it apart and said it was broken. My mother was upset and felt so unsafe. She had been uncomfortable not being at home when she arrived but her fear and anxiety became palpable. The insurance company and hospital were appalled by her treatment and worked with us to get her out of there as soon as possible but they needed the in house doctor to ok the transfer. They lied to my husband about when the doctor was available and nothing happened until the evening before she left. We made sure she left the next day by noon. This is a nightmare. Do not leave your family here. Do not leave your enemies here.

Harvest Time International, a faith-based nonprofit, was founded in 1994 in Sanford, Florida. The organization also offers emergency aid, gift cards, and Christmas assistance, and coordinates donations for local and international disaster relief efforts. They have this location in Sanford and also one in Port Orange. To date, 549 million dollars of supplies have been distributed. I was driving by and spotted Harvest Time. It looked so interesting that I had to stop to check it out. Inside is a guest services desk to help clients. The rest of the building is a store that sells discounted items. Corporate sponsors like Walmart. Disney, and CVS Health donate their extra inventory. There was pantry and frozen food including a wall of bread and bagels along with beauty items, hardware, clothes, sunglasses, pet supplies, cleaning supplies, party items, sheets and blankets, Mickey Mouse popcorn buckets straight from Disney World, and even oil for your car. Harvest Time charges a $7 membership to shop the store which I would gladly have paid if I was local but the friendly cashier let me know that one time visitors can get a free daily pass to shop. I grabbed a cart and stocked up on a summertime worth of snacks and goodies. I loved learning about this amazing organization and all of the good they are doing in the community. If you live local, Harvest Time can really help your budget. Bring your own bag!

There are larger, more expensive, and more grandiose communities out there. But the personal relationship I've built with Chad Carnes is what lets me rest easy knowing my mother is safe. Under Chad's leadership, The Watermark has made my mother's transition through independent living, assisted living, and now memory care possible. Their entire team, medical staff, management, even the dining room staff, gives me peace of mind that my mother is well cared for. One moment says it better than I can: I watched a nurse casually offer her his arm, and she introduced him to me as "her attorney." She couldn't find the words to name what she felt, safe, cared for, at ease with him, so she reached for the closest phrase she had. That she chose "attorney" wasn't about accuracy. It was her way of saying, "this is someone I trust." Every decision, every move, every concern has been handled with grace and obvious care. During the period of my mother's greatest need, this team has provided everything necessary to protect her. When things have been difficult, they've worked with us to find solutions. I don't write reviews easily, but I write this one gladly. The Watermark isn't the biggest or the fanciest option in the area. It's simply the place where my mother is safe, and that safety starts with Chad Carnes. It's his leadership that sets the tone his staff carries into every room, every day. Because of that, I've learned to trust people I didn't know a year ago with the person I love most.

MEMORY CARE UNIT IS NOT A SAFE PLACE FOR LATE ALZHEIMER RESIDENTS…read more My mother could no longer care for my father at home at age 93 with late-stage Alzheimer. She had to make a 3-day decision because the hospital could not keep him there. She paid more than 10K a month at this Memory Care. She was impressed by the delicious food, clean environment, locked doors to outside Pavillion area and easy access for her visits. She did not know the questions to ask about trained staff for Alzheimer residents and about the high turnover of staff monthly. They do have one day and one night nurse and CNAs on the Memory Care side, but they also were taking care of the ALF side of the facility. There was supposed to be activities for the Memory Care unit but when we visited we did not see any. My dad progressed quickly into complete loss of memory and speech. He had some balance issues. There was no exercise program and someone who would help him eat. He could say a few words still, but didn't know us. He was not changed daily and his sheets were bloody from abrasions on his back and sometimes no sheets at all on the bed with a very rough mattress. He was always cold and asked for the thermostat to be turned up so the AC would not come on with his few words. They listened only when we put a note and told everyone who came in the room that it is too cold for dad to sleep at night or sit in the room and visit. We feel that he was neglected and abused by the staff with the abrasions, cuts, bruises, a broken nose and injured face. He also went to the hospital a few times while there. There are no video monitors in the halls or great rooms for accountability. When asked how he got hurt, most of the time they didn't know or say that he ran away from them and fell. He could only shuffle walk. We were in the process of intervening to get mother to transfer him to a smaller more experienced with Alzheimer place, when we came in for a visit and dad was laying on the bed with a death rattle with his eyes shut. We brought him home with Hospice care until he passed 2 days later. We believe he could have lived a few more months or so if he had better care and was not harmed. Please do not choose this Memory Care unit for your loved one as the lack of skilled care will cut their life short and they will just give up. My dad deserved to be treated with respect and honor and so does your loved one.

I volunteered for the 'Disney Give a Day, Get a Day' program, and painted a house with Hands On…read moreOrlando. I used to volunteer a lot, then got out of it as I got older, and was happy to have volunteering put in the forefront of the news with Disney. I knew the volume of people signing up for events, and was pleasantly surprised when I painted a house with Hands On Orlando. The day consisted of painting four houses, with 100 volunteer expected. The HOO coordinator was very organized, arrived early and was very friendly. There was a HOO coordinator for each house, and one who monitored the whole project. They were very clear in their directions, and made a very humid day painting a house in not a great neighbor hood a great experience. Being an annual passholder for Disney, I wasn't worried about the processing time for the receipt of the Disney voucher, and yet it was in my email by Tuesday. Its kind of sad, the coordinator said that the month before, for the same event they had only twenty volunteers, and now all their events are full. While we appreciate all the Disney is doing to help communities, I sure wish more people would volunteer without having to be bribed, and I can't wait til we do it again!

I have never popped in that it didnt smell clean, I can see its clean, the people are happy, and the meals I have had were very good. My Mother in Law is moving in next month and we couldnt be happier. Its a safe and well maintained place. I have been in them all around this area, and its the best for independant living that I see, for a senisble price monthly.

You are not emotionally safe there. All the staff will do is tell you to find another place to live or tell you to let them give you meds or to take your food to your room. The bullying, gossip, and mean behavior just continue. They don't always remember to give you your meds or are late. The residents and some of the staffs' behavior is intentional. But the management doesn't care.

The program was founded in 2011 by Aura Lynn who went to prison and had a change of heart. She became committed to helping women get out of the revolving door of incarceration in Seminole County. This ministry provides a holistic approach by helping women to get jobs, job training, and education. They also offer bridge housing and a food pantry. It was a pleasure to visit this large and inviting thrift store during a recent visit to Sanford. They had a selection of furniture, household goods, clothes, accessories, jewelry, shoes, small appliances, and children's toys and clothes. There is a boutique section and they also sell discounted items from the Publix bakery. In a backroom they have a treasure trove of items for one dollar. I had so much fun exploring this store and peeking around corners and opening cabinets to discover even more items. Different weekly sales are on the board out front. This is such a wonderful cause to support. If I lived locally this thrift store would be on my weekly rotation.

I can't say enough things about the Ronald McDonald House Charity…read more I've been volunteering since I was a little girl...it was something that was always important to my parents and it's stayed with me all my life....but I can honestly say that I have found my "Forever Home", if you will. They have very few people on staff and are heavily reliant on volunteers, and so incredibly appreciative of their volunteers. I've never felt like I made such a difference to a single organization as I do now. There are two houses in Orlando. One is near Florida Hospital and one by Arnold Palmer on Orange Avenue, where I volunteer. The Charity is set up to have families and parents of hospitalized children stay near their sick kiddos. They ask for a donation of $15 a night. That's all. $15!!! And if a family cannot afford it, they don't have to pay. It's amazing. The Arnold Palmer house has about 35 rooms, a computer room, gorgeous living rooms, a monster kitchen and more. Local restaurants and organizations come in nightly to cook dinner for everyone and once in a while they will have to cancel at the last minute...and then volunteers like me can fill in. :) So far, I've helped at Bed Day. Tempurpedic donated all the beds to the Houses in the US and I made breakfast for lots of firefighters and police officers while they changed the beds out. I also helped at the Ice Cream Social and Golf Tourney...and I work the desk a couple of times a month at the Arnold Palmer House. I am currently trying to organize an edible garden planting at the houses. If you have any ideas, send them my way. You don't have a lot of interaction with the kids...it's their parents and families you help. Many times it's a quick hello...but sometimes they just want to be taken away from hospital speak for awhile...talk about Gossip Girl or gas prices...they just need a smile and a hug and cup of coffee. Like I said, they are heavily reliant on volunteers so if you have an interest, please visit their site at www.rmhccf.org You can volunteer at special events or if you have a consistent time that you are able to give weekly or monthly you can volunteer at the houses. I recently volunteered under the "Share a meal" program, where people from the community can come in and cook (or bring in from a commercial kitchen) lunch or dinner. On my stop I baked cookies for the holidays and brought in cupcakes donated from Gigi's Cupcakes of Orlando. I was welcomed by the staff and the families who I met, everyone was very nice. The kitchen has every type of pot, pan and utensil you need to make a meal. I'll be signing up for a shift again in January.
