Thoughts on volunteering with the Jewish Pavilion: When my oldest daughter told me that she was interested in working in the field of Geriatrics, I was astonished. I worked most of my life with high school and college students and could not imagine why anyone would be interested in working around old people. I asked Amy why and she said, "Oh Mom, we have so much to learn from them." When I retired and was able to do volunteer work, I knew I wanted to work within the Jewish community and Zena Sulkes suggested that I explore the Jewish Pavilion. I must admit that in the beginning I approached this with trepidation. How wrong I was, and how lucky I am to be able to share a little time with these remarkable people. I bring them baked goods and a little news from the outside world, but they share the richness of their lives, their memories, and their point of view. They allow me to see the world through their eyes and, you know what? Amy was right. I am indeed blessed to be a small part of these people's lives. Norma L. Ball read more

If it were not for the Jewish Pavilion and their incredible volunteers, my mother would not have been able to live to her 91st birthday. These volunteers provided her with the celebrations of her faith, companionship and a reason to enjoy her surroundings. By bringing the words, music and elements of Judaism into her nursing home world, she felt a continuation of her heritage. When my sister and I could not get to see her, we knew the Jewish Pavilion would have a volunteer on premises. The best part of it all was the fact that even her non-Jewish room mate could enjoy it, too, because she was never left out of the goodies that mom received, and loved to attend the celebrations. It provided a common ground for discourse. The best thing that could happen to anyone of advanced age, Jewish and living in this area, is the Jewish Pavilion. read more

The people at The Jewish Pavillion are the most caring, kind, giving, compassionate and loving people you would ever want to associate with. They understand that a senior citizen still has dreams to live each day with purpose and the desire to be valued. They understand the importance of traditions and that celebrations bring joy and happiness. They understand the challenges of aging and have knowledge and resources to enhance the lives of seniors and to especially help to give support and knowledge care givers. The Jewish Pavilion provides vital social services to Seniors (and their families) - regardless of their religious affiliation. The JP brings religious services and holiday celebrations to people residing in Adult Living Facilities in the Greater Orlando area. All of it's activities are done without charge. Among the many other important services offered by the Pavilion are Home Care referrals and grief support. As a member of the Board of Directors, I am proud to identify with the Jewish Pavilion and support it's Mission. My husband and I, along with our congregation, Bet Chaim, have volunteered with the Jewish Pavilion for over 6 years. We attend monthly visits to several assisted-living facilities in the area, providing Shabbat services and special holiday festivities. It has been wonderful getting to know the residents and their families and they enjoy our visits so much as do we. Sometimes I think we get more out of these visits than the residents do!
