First time here, but it will not be the last, dinner for four, and we tried steak and fish. Two of us ordered the chateaubriand for two. We also ordered the 14oz. NY strip and the Salmon entrees. Everyone thought their food was excellent, steaks were cooked as requested and fish was tender and juicy. Martinis were ordered by the ladies and desserts were ordered and split among us, and all were delicious. My lemon drop martini could have used a bit more simple syrup, but if you like it dry it's perfect. Our reserved table was waiting on arrival and all four of us had a wonderful evening. Once you enter, go down stairs to be seated, one important note, you must have reservations as this place is busy all the time according to our companions. We came in without reservations- all tables filled but seats at bar opened. We took them and had dinner anyway. So glad we did!!! Kind staff, personable and accommodating. Food was amazing! I had sea scallops and they were the BEST I've had in WNY area! Perfectly cooked, not fishy, so delicious! Piano player began music at 6. Was a nice conversation piece between us...guessing songs and reminiscing. Will definitely visit again but-now we know with reservations on a Saturday. This place will not disappoint!!! We were seated immediately and I had asked to move next to a wall which they were able to accommodate us. We looked over the menu and waited 25 minutes before anyone had addressed us. The room was 50% empty... we ordered our meal which took about 25 to 30 minutes. At that point we had each eaten 2 of the 3 warmed moderately hard rolls and never once was asked if we wanted more water or drinks. The prime rib was almost raw and my 2 steaks were completely different. 1 was almost rare and the other was well done. The garlic mashed potatoes had no hint of garlic and were cold. First time dining here and it was lovely! What a cozy setting - old world steakhouse charm - great for date night or a special occasion, or when you need a high quality meal! Parking is available on the street, next to the building, and extending behind the building. The space is not handicapped accessible - there are stairs to access both the restaurant (downstairs) and the party space (upstairs). There could be an elevator, but I did not see one. There are M/F restrooms on the lower level that accommodate more than one person. I recommend reservations, even during the week! Upon entry for dinner, go down the stairs. There is no hostess stand but someone will come over to greet you. We did not have a reservation but we're welcomed to sit at the bar. Kiera is a great bartender - polite, efficient and proficient - she made me a fantastic Cosmo (see pic) - and is a wonderful server too! She explained the special and which desserts are house-made. I always ask about desserts first so I can plan what to order (do I leave room for desserts or not?). Most of the pies are house-made, but definitely ask because at times they have dessert specials too. We both ordered steaks that were prepared exactly as requested, and were reasonably priced. My petite filet mignon was so tender and perfectly pink inside. The au jus that came with it was a bonus. The green beans were fresh picked and complemented the meal well. Hubby had a porterhouse (t-bone) cooked rare and he said he would definitely order it again. Bread was served with the meal. We also had the stuffed mushroom appetizer and it was delicious. We have frequented this restaurant many times and they never disappoint us. Last night we spent our New Years Even at the restaurant. We started out with stuffed mushrooms followed by a prime rib dinner. The food and drinks were delicious. Mary was our server and she is the daughter of the owner. She made sure we always had anything we needed. We were not rushed and enjoyed listening to the piano music and singing along with the music. Mary brought out party favors even though everyone else had left the restaurant. We celebrated New Year's early and sang a final song with Sue, the pianist. While the entrees tasted good, there was a lot left to be desired with the overall experience. We tried the pork chop and the seafood platter. The seafood platter was disappointingly small for the price. My side salad was comically small and it appeared to have very little effort put into it. I had a singular cucumber piece and three measly grape tomatoes (two of which were bruised and old), and the lettuce was wilting. The service was horrendous. The hostess was rude and our server gave us very little time. She did not introduce herself once and the only time she stop to check in on us was when walking by. In this instance, she did not even slow her walking to the point where we could make any comment about our food. When ordering food, she seemed very aggravated by our questions about the menu (we asked two questions). She also gave us a condescending attitude when my partner was asking about the beers offered on the menu. Four different people walked passed our empty water pitcher that we had placed at the edge of the table and it took a long time for this to be acknowledged. During our meal, we felt rushed as the server and hostess tried to take our plates with food on it. The hostess even tried to take my partner's beer out of his hands while he was drinking it. The establishment was not busy at this time and there seemed to be no explanation for the rush, especially considering it had only been an hour since being sat. While normally we do not care about service as much, we felt extremely disappointed with this experience. We watched our server treat other patrons with much more respect and time. Being the only non white guest in the establishment, we couldn't help but wonder if race played a factor into our experience. What was the worse, when I called two days later to speak to the manager/owner about my experience, the lady answering the phone gave me a nasty attitude and made snarky side comments. We went here for our Birthday dinners . Haven't been here in years. It still has the homey warm atmosphere that I remember from years ago. Plenty of parking, the food was excellent. Our server was Mary and she made us feel special and well taken care of. I had the fried Scallops and my wife had broiled shrimp. Both dinners were plentiful and the prices were reasonable. The only draw back is that the bar and dining room are on the lower level, not sure that it would be handicap accessible. There may be a different way to the lower level other than the stairs, but I never asked. If your looking for a place to dine for a special occasion, this place would really fit the bill. The menu is just large enough to accommodate most and a full service bar as well. The wine list was extensive enough and covers all preferences. This is the spot to get authentic Italian food. We have been here a couple times and it never fails to impress. Appetizers, entrees, desserts. All amazing and like you're eating at 5 star restaurants. The crab cake has to be my favorite app. It was so yummy and the sauces are so unique for a crab cake dish! Who knew balsamic would work? The pasta tastes homemade and fresh. The servers are so friendly and they know the menu very clearly. They are also kid friendly which is huge for us since we have a toddler! Rather small, confined dining space was almost fully occupied. It was quite noisy. There is a good selection of "steakhouse" entrees and appetizers. There was only one waitress, which made for rather slow service. But, she tried her best and was friendly and informative. Our food was a bit overcooked, which may have been the result of sitting under a heating element too long until the waitress could deliver to our table. All of the food seemed to be of very good quality and the portion sizes were good. The wine list was kind of mediocre. Overall, this restaurant is better than the steakhouse chains, but not "excellent,' just above average. Buyer beware- beef prices have gotten very high! Classic to the core! We have lovingly referred to this place as the bunker " for years. Down the stairs and into another era. Our son joined us for an anniversary dinner, and there was not one thing to complain about. We shared stuffed mushrooms, shrimp cocktail and clams casino. Perfectly prepared and delicious. The food excellent. Their website indicates takeout is available from 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm. This is not accurate. I sent the menu to family members for a family birthday celebration. I obtained entree, side and salad dressing preferences for each person. At 4:45 on a Tuesday I called to make the takeout order. The woman that answered said, "Go ahead with the order." I prefaced the request by saying it was an order for five people. The call taker then said, "Just a minute" and put me on hold. She returned a few seconds later and said, "We aren't doing takeout tonight." I said, "That is inconvenient, I planned a special birthday celebration." Her response was, "Sorry." We could not wait for Johnson House to open again after the Covid shutdown. Last night (June 20) was our chance to see the results of all the hard work they put into the restaurant. The upgrades are subtle,extensive but refined to match the character of of this famous steakhouse. We were delighted to see the regular staff still tending to your every need in a professional manor. The menu is essentially the same as always with all our favorites. My wife had a petite filet cooked to perfection and I had my made up surf and turf that consists of lamb chops and a half order of scallops. The only reason for not giving the Johnson House 5 starts is the upholstery on the chairs and bench seating. Your bottom will sink in to the same groove as the customers many years past. This is a causal family restaurant that leans more towards a nice restaurant. The experienced staff and friendly atmosphere make for a good dining night out. The food is consistent and very good. The obvious only drawback is the dining room set up. It's in the basement of an old historic building. It's cozy, I guess, but very dark with no view outside. Parked on the street, gave our name & we were directed to the coat room (I love when a restaurant has an old school Coat room!) and headed to the bar to wait until our table was ready (we arrived about 15 min early). The bar is small and seemed to have a lot of regulars around it..there were a couple non-domestics on draft so we each got something we liked well enough but not a huge bunch of choices. Full bar and I saw glasses of wine so everyone is covered. We were seated at this tiny little booth along the wall in the bar area an tried to read the menu...it is really dark in there! Neither of us could read the menu without the flashlight on our phones!! Craig went right for the larger cut of prime rib.. finished on the grill.. I got the petite filet and we both got the veggie and garlic smashed potatoes. Both cuts of meat were cooked perfectly (that filet just melted in my mouth!), the portion of potatoes was quite a bit smaller than what u might get at a chain steak house but it was perfect (and probably an actual true one person portion) size for me with the sautéed green beans and salad starter. The caveman devoured all of it and was very happy.. we were both glad we chose those smashed potatoes. The service was not rushed, perhaps a tad slow but certainly not enough to make me not want to return, very professional and gracious and the atmosphere I would call cozy and comfortable, and value? about the amount I expected to pay for 2 people for good cuts of beef. It's definitely someplace to come on a cold winter night. I was amused by the lady playing the piano later on.. I can't figure out how they shoved the piano in there but it was a nice touch. I really was looking forward to dining here, reading the reviews and our son has eaten here with his girlfriend and spoke highly of the Johnson House. Cons...not enough wait staff, plenty of people to bus tables but appeared to be only 2 waitresses for entire restaurant and there were many large parties to be served. We were seated promptly by the owner and our waitress was pleasant enough but we noticed that 2 other tables (very apparent they were regulars as they were chatting with owner and wait staff) who arrived after we did were served and attended to right away. Soup and salad came out after 20-25 minutes and then entrees within an hour (a bit slow and other diners who were seated after us, ate before we did). Second, when we received our bill, handwritten (odd in this day of technology) our bar tab was not itemized. We weren't able to see what glasses of wine or drinks cost. The owner seems to have a very dour look on her face the entire night and hovered over the highly stressed waitstaff. Pro...my entree, beef liver was done to perfection, albeit the garlic mashed potatoes were cold and less to be desired. My husband's seafood platter was decent but over cooked lobster tail and one item he couldn't identify. All in all, it is very dark interior, which we read about, and we left feeling like our customer service experience was less than desirable. If you are going to treat "regulars" like royalty this should be your approach for all customers. We will not be returning. read more
